from frogs with thanks and dinosaurs to the oldest animal ever here are twelve of the most amazing recent discoveries number 12 living colors the formal name of this animal refers to Aphrodite the goddess of love and beauty from Greek mythology and these fish do display some dazzlingly beautiful colors they were discovered off the coast of Brazil in 2018 and they'd be difficult to miss with those dayglo colors it's psychedelic combination of electric pink bright yellow and vibrant green has prompted some people to say that it's one of the prettiest fishes they've ever seen what do you think number eleven new croc found for a long time this slender snouted crocodile was confused with another similar species as a result both animals were thought to belong to the same species it wasn't until 2018 that researchers discovered enough differences in the two animals skulls and scales to warrant the naming of a separate species and so the west-african slender snouted crocodile debuted as a creature that is distinctly different than its relative the Central African slender snouted crocodile the West African reptiles represent the first new living crocodile species discovered in nearly 90 years according to people who know about these things the bad news is that only 500 of them are estimated to exist in the region so they're already listed as critically endangered number 10 an ape apart these orangutangs live in a hilly isolated region of Samarra in Borneo known as South Tappin uli they were initially reported in 1939 but were forgotten about until 1997 when an expedition rediscovered them they're identified by their flat faces prominent facial cheeks and beards which are displayed by males and females alike two species of orangutan the Sumatran and the Bornean weren't recognized until 2017 that's when the tappan uli orangutan was formally introduced as its own species reason supporting the distinction included the animals unique calls behavioral patterns and physicality like other orangutangs this new species spends most of their time in the trace unlike some of the others they have never been observed on the ground which is likely due to the Samar and tigers in the area of the three species this newest one represents the rarest of the great apes with less than 800 individuals in the wild number nine warm-hearted fish more properly called the open these fish and nicknamed moon fish due to their flat round shape there are two living species that can be found in the tropical waters of most oceans worldwide and they grow to some impressive sizes with larger specimens documented to weigh 600 pounds 270 kilograms and measure more than six and a half feet in length that's two meters other notable physical features include their large eyes and distinct red orange coloration but their most notable trade is that these fish are warm-blooded the discovery revealed the opah is the first fish described that has a warm heart that allows the creature to keep most of its body at a higher temperature than the water number eight tardigrade underfoot scientific discoveries can occur in some weird ways consider the case of a new tardigrade species that was found in 2018 you know tardigrades or water bears are some of the toughest creatures on the planet these tiny beasts can survive everything from extreme radiation dehydration starvation and air deprivation they've even withstood being exposed to outer space and they can show up from the highest mountains to the deepest seas so maybe it's not surprising that one of them showed up in the parking lot of an apartment building in Japan a researcher there found the minut organism in some moss samples that he collected near his building it was only after being analyzed at the lab that it was discovered to be a new species of tardigrade and it turned out to be a herbivore that's weird even by tardigrade standards since most of them are carnivorous [Music] number seven hello cutie Bear this critter from the cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador is commonly called the kitty bear but the Alinghi toe is not really a bear since the animals are more closely related to raccoons and experts say that the first new car never and mammals described in the Western Hemisphere in more than three decades they weigh about 900 grams or two pounds and measure three hundred and fifty-five millimeters long or 14 inches which makes them the smallest members of their family known to be solitary nocturnal little beasts these animals are thought to live only in the trees and really seem to favor the high life since best moons have been founded altitudes exceeding 2.7 kilometers on 9,000 feet in the Andes did you know these animals are sometimes mistaken for the related kinkajou number 6 baffling beetles these insects seem to suffer from a case of identity crisis they're beetles that are native to Costa Rica and are very small and about one point six millimeters long but they don't look like beetles nor do they live like them these species lives within a colony of nomadic army ants and has kind of adopted their appearance they've also adopted the ants as their means of personal transportation whenever the colony moves the small spindly beetles are known to latch onto the waste of worker ants and let those insects carry them to their destination once it's attached the beetle mimics the appearance of the ants abdomen making it look like the worker has two of those segments until they can get over looks like hitchhiking is the beetles best chance for a lift [Music] number five Marianas now fish these deep sea creatures belong to a family of fish that contains over 400 species and geographically they're the world's most widespread marine fish organisms members of this species measure about 29 centimeters long or 11 inches and appear like pale tadpoles although they weigh a minuscule 160 grams or 0.35 pounds that the top predators in the deep-sea environment that includes various regions of the Mariana Trench wear debts approached 8,500 meters or 27 thousand feet deep did you know that these snail fish inhabit the challenger deep it's located in the southern part of the Mariana Trench and contains the deepest point known in the planet seabed at nearly 11,000 metres or 36,000 feet number four extremely senior citizens fossil specimens known as Deacon Sonya were initially found in South Australia and have since turned up in the Ukraine and Russia among other locations specimens can range more than four and a half feet long 1.4 meters and have a thickness of only a few millimeters the fossils have sparked a lot of debate as to whether they were created by organisms like plants fungi or bacteria researchers have now concluded that the fossils belong to animals and not to something like an enormous amoeba that's because analysis revealed the presence of molecular fossils of cholesterol which is only found in animals since they date back to the Ediacaran period some 557 million years ago Dickon Sonja represents the world's oldest known animal fossils as for what type of animal created those fossils that's still open to debate tell us what you think in the comments number three frogs with thanks now there's a phrase you don't hear so often but these amphibians endemic to Indonesia are indeed known to possess such choppers the animals are around one and a half inches long 37 millimeters from snap to vent and a known for having well-developed tails and mouth parts at birth as to the purpose of those fangs experts say that many amphibians have teeth although they're very different from ours the fangs of these frogs aren't really teeth though they're bony protrusions that erupt through the gum line the spike like structures might be used for snatching prey from fast-moving water but their exact function still remains a mystery have any ideas number two deep-sea lizard fish this unusual beast was initially found in 2017 off the eastern coast of Australia and was then declared distinct species about a year later they have slender cylindrical bodies that can reach more than 70 centimetres long and huge mouths filled with sharp needle-like teeth used to capture and tear at prey researchers say they're one of the world's deepest dwelling apex predators and they're known to eat anything including others of their kind but they're not worried about ravaging their population these creatures are Mafra Deitz that possess both male and female reproductive traits living some three and a half thousand metres or 11,500 feet below the surface these lizard fish don't get to hook up so often as hermaphrodites they can perpetuate the species regardless of which gender they encounter number one a giant thunderclap its formal name is LeDoux Mahadi from the cisu toad language of South Africa that translates as a giant thunderclap and weighing around 26,000 pounds or 12 metric tonnes the Beast certainly was a giant it was one of the earliest giant sauropod morphs which included enormous sauropods like brontosaurus which followed this specimen like those of its relatives this dinosaur had huge four limbs unlike those relatives the four limbs were flexible and not too a column like it existed during the early Jurassic epoch around 200 million years ago when it was probably the largest land animal that ever existed thanks so much for watching if you enjoyed the video don't forget to hit that big red subscribe button and click the bell for
