hey guys welcome back to another day a fact homeschool week here on my channel today's video is one that I really loved sharing with you guys today we're going to be talking about mourning basket I'm gonna take you guys and show you what is in our mourning basket for the upcoming school year but today a bonus is that I am going to be collaborating with Jessica from the walled-off way and she is going to be sharing what is in her daughter's mourning basket as well so make sure you pop on over to her channel and check out what their mourning basket plans are for this upcoming school year mourning basket is just such a beautiful way to incorporate what's important in your home and it looks so different in every single home school so for us it's where I store all of like the little beautiful bits and pieces that would otherwise slip through the cracks but are so important to me and my family that I really want to make sure we value and make the time for I put all of that in our morning basket and then for others it's where they put the bulk of their homeschool the different academic things they want to be sure to hit it's where people keep habits it's where people store read-alouds it's where people put their Bible studies it can be different in every single home so just keep in mind that all I'm showing you is what is in our family's morning basket for this upcoming school year it can really be modified to fit your family however you would like so without further ado here is what is in our morning basket for this upcoming school year today's giveaway is for a company that we really love in our home and there are actually going to be two winners so the first winner is going to receive a three month subscription to the heritage letter you guys have actually seen this on my channel before I worked with them a while back and then really enjoyed the letters so much that I went ahead and subscribed to them for my family so with the heritage letter each month you'll receive a fictional letter steeped in historical fact from someone who helped make America the country that it is today you'll also receive a photo fact card with a picture of the person and important facts surrounding that person's life on the back and then you'll receive an artifact that's related to that person so it might be a map or a drawing a picture a passage of writing a quote the sky's limit in addition to the letter you'll be able to find a blog post on their website with lesson plan ideas book recommendations games arts and crafts and field trip ideas broken down by preschool through high school so this is really a unique way to learn about someone new and dig in a little bit deeper the second winner is also going to receive a three-month subscription but that is to their brand-new American heritage adventure letter this is a letter that's written from Lizzy Jane as she explores America one stop at a time and you'll also receive a souvenir postcard featuring artwork from the letter that you can keep for yourself or mail to a friend these letters are stunningly beautiful you also want to mention that the writers of these letters are a homeschooling family of four who enjoys traveling to historical places and events and desires to share a love of American history with all of us so thank you so much heritage letter for offering both of these giveaways all the info is in the description box down below good luck you guys alright so my neighbor just started mowing his lawn but my house otherwise it's pretty quiet so fingers crossed that you can hear me fine cuz this is my one this is my one big moment from a mourning basket um so what I'm going to show you today are all of the things that are in this basket that remain in this basket for the year nothing rotates out other than like our artist you know that we change midway through the year things like that and so all of this is consistent and will stay however I usually do tuck a little something a little icebreaker into here sometimes it's literally just like Lego challenge cards or play-doh literally just play-doh for the kids to just kind of use at the table just to break up morning basket if tensions are kind of high that day you know I'm asking three out of my four to sit down and stay seated for an hour with me and so you know it doesn't always work out that my six year old my nine year old and my 11 year old are all that their attention is held the whole time so sometimes we just break it up so for that I like to have things like this on hand I've got these corny jokes that's something that's fun to kind of slip in there I've got past the pigs just little things like this that just kind of lighten the mood I've got the math dice this is one that all of my kids really like I have math dice and math dice jr. and then a family favorite is ten Z and then this seventy seven ways to play ten Z is kind of like a fun challenge set to go with that so I wanted to show you those are just a few ideas I rotate something out very consistently sometimes we put in like one of the scrunch maps or various things like that but for the most part this is what will whole will stay in the basket and then the only other thing is that these two items do not actually fit in the basket this is our book of centuries this is a part of our family mourning basket however it just doesn't fit in the basket and we use this for other subjects as well this is from Anna Vance Paper Co I've just got tape over our last name here and then this sing a song of seasons this is a nature poem for each day of the year this is something that I had been looking at for a really long time I didn't realize it was this large and I was really surprised when it arrived but this is a part of our mourning basket as well this daily nature poem now I am going to direct you over to over here I will put a link to my like how I scheduled mourning basket because I know if you're a mourning basket newbie and you're watching this video it's gonna seem like there's a lot of stuff in here and I don't want to overwhelm you we definitely do not go through even half of this in a day sometimes we don't even get through all of it in a week's time so I just want to make you aware that I do have a video on on how I rotate through mourning basket and a blog post as well that kind of breaks it down by minute by minute kind of essentially how that goes for me so I want to dress do over there if you're new to the idea of mourning baskets so this isn't like drinking from a firehose because there's gonna be a lot of stuff that I'm about to show you okay I think that's all the housekeeping I need to do here before I start showing you what's in here so without further ado let's get right to it so the first thing you'll see in here is musical multiplication this is from the good and the beautiful and this comes with an mp3 download that you just sing through these multiplication facts they're visual for your visual learners and they're you just sing through these different songs and then you can use these you can cut these out like flashcards in the back and this is something that we've used for a well over a year it's been great for our family even Annie knows her little multiplication facts because of this but I just like to have it in here we cycle through it quite often at least twice a week one of the kids who's our team captain that day who's just kind of like the kid who leads our morning basket that day just picks set a B C or D that they want to do and we'll go through it and it's just a way to review I see us using this at mean always I don't ever see us putting this down just because it's great memory work speaking of memory work this year you'll notice this is new if you've been around here for a while this year I have the president's study that are the the sand ex-presidents cards that we'll be going through and we're just going to add this to our memory work rotation I don't know does this have yeah it actually is updated so it has the latest two presidents as well and which I don't see and a lot of stuff sometimes sometimes it just stops at George Bush so this also has President Obama and president Trump if you're looking for any updated president field guides so we have that to go along with it let me go to the back here you guys have seen this for a long long time I just photocopy this every now and then this is not updated but sometimes there are fun projects in here and just a little bit more like kid-friendly biographies if this one is a little too wordy for Eli than I have this one that I can just read kind of a more simplified biography so that's in there as well but again that's something we add maybe once a week maybe twice a week we have our composer we will be doing I think I pronounced it wrong last time hon del I said handle like the like the the illinois-chicago girl that I am but we've got hondo that we'll be doing this year this is from simply Charlotte Mason it comes with the CDs one day a week will read a little bit of info and then the rest of the week we'll listen to that song just casually while we are doing our schoolwork this is one of my top recommendations for like if you're looking to add any enriching materials to your home school this is one of my top favorites now this actually starts in September so um but I still keep it in the morning basket just so that it's there when when September starts I think it begins after Labor Day or it begins September 1st at Labor Day this is just a compilation of famous birthdays and quotes and poems and songs and it was written it was it written in the 1800s it's just something that I like to keep around we use this kind of like as calendar time for ok 1914 we use this as calendar time for my older kids we do go through like the days of the week and the calendar every day but that's very very you know young for my older too so after we go through that then we'll open up to the date in the book here and every so often we'll come across something that we weren't aware of for example the day to star-spangled banner was written I I didn't have that marked down like in my teachers planner anywhere so that's the example I like to use just because it's one that's memorable for me we ended up and we ended up studying that almost the whole day and it was just a surprise to us when we saw that it was the date in here so I like to keep this on hand as well these are also from Anna Vance paper code these are my kids narration journals now they have two different type of narration journals they have these and they have another one that they do all of their individual work in these narrations are specifically for our morning basket and our family subjects and then they have their own individual ones where they are keeping record of their the books they're reading any of their language arts work and things along those lines so for Jesse I got the wide ruled lines I believe I got college rule for Isabella and then EMI I got the kindergarten lines or the early Rider lines I can't remember and then Annie just because she sometimes sits in with us I got college rule just because I'll be writing her narrations but I wanted to share that with you anyway that she has one and the Tuttle twins this is something new in our morning basket this year I really like these books and I have actually worked closely with the Tuttle twins over the last couple of months just because I really value the effort that Connor the art author has put into teaching kids about Liberty so there are 10 books in this series that I have and so I'm just gonna put one book in per month they're actually pretty quick reads they're not super heavy so they can be read in just a couple of days honestly and then they have these great discussion questions at the end so there is a discussion questions down here and then you can also get activity workbooks to download online if you would like so I'm gonna start with the law and then we have all we have the whole set of books so they there's also books to talk about education and entrepreneurship and bartering and all that so this is a really great series in my opinion so I'm gonna rotate those in once a month with a different book our artist is Homer Winslow Homer and I keep his biography in here but then we have the picture study portfolio the actual portfolio is large and doesn't fit in here so I just keep those card stock portraits in the picture study portfolio and rotate that out and hang it up as we use it but this is the book that has his biography and the overview of each picture that we'll be looking at we also have enjoy the poems of Emily Dickinson she is our poet this year I love this simply Charlotte Mason enjoy the poems series so essentially it just has a little living biography and then just a poem one per week and then there's some helpful tips on the side if you're not well-versed in teaching poetry which I'm not this is kind of random but we do have a lot of the who was series that I really enjoy and a bunch of the other like why we M books and just you know random biographies that correspond with whether we're somewhere in five in a row or in history or in science so I keep things like this in here often we're just going to be doing Paul Revere's ride for the first couple weeks of school so we have the who was Paul Revere even though Bell is not doing five in a row with us it definitely benefits her to also hear a little bit about what I'm doing with the boys one question I get a lot is because I mentioned I do current events with the kid and that is how I teach current events so the way that I do it is we have these world kids magazines from my older two and then I have God's big world for Eli these are really simple current event magazines written by the world magazine brand which is a Christian worldview I just want to make you guys aware of that if you are a secular home schooler um however I do believe there is like time for kids magazine I believe maybe and I think there's a world team that I've been considering getting for bella' for this next year we went in on a big group order so we ended up getting like I think it was like maybe 10 or if fifteen dollars per kid per subscription for the whole year if you're only getting it for between like one and four kids it's like thirty dollars a kid but if you go in I believe it's like eight or more kids then the subscription price is significantly lower and you can mix and match the different subscriptions a few years ago I headed it up in our area for a few of my girlfriends and this last year one of my girlfriends did it which I'm super appreciative of because then they all get delivered to you and you have to get them to people but yes so she doesn't do it again this year I'm gonna renew it for this upcoming year because my kids really enjoy this so it's just a little little current events and what I like to do is I like to assign my kids one of these articles they'll go off and they'll read it and then they'll do a news report on it they'll come back to the table and give a little news report to everyone and essentially what they're doing is they are doing a oral narration without it seeming so formal they like to pretend to be newscasters or news reporters or sometimes they'll write a newspaper article for us and that's just a different way to one discuss current events and to have them do some narration and we have our habit study which I have multiple videos on habit training so I will link those up here in the corner for my older two we are going to go through the comedy of errors this year I have their scripts and then my teachers manual in here I don't know if you guys gonna sit in with us or not I think this is recommended for second grade and up however you know if you want to sit in I have no issues with that but I plan to tack this on at the end of our morning basket like one or two days a week and if he wants to be a part of it he's welcome to if not he can go play some logic toys that we have and then I just have our little folder here that has our memory work so these are daily things we do we do a hymn study every day so right now we're doing I need the every hour and then the second half of this term we'll do two so sweet - trust in Jesus and then I have our passage that we're studying so this term the kids are doing Romans 8:1 through for which their actual supposed to be doing at the end of last term and then we just studied like Underground Railroad and the Civil War toward the end of last school year and we're gonna be revisiting that in September so I decided to do swing low Sweet Chariot as our folk song I do both him study and folk songs just because the hem study I feel like gives them a good you know good grasp on the songs of our faith but then the folk songs do tell the story of America and so I I try to find the voice that um songs that I feel like kind of hit where we are in history so they are kind of tucking those into their heart as well and then Lord willing we will get through I have singing what company is this is it singing sofa I will link it down below I wanted to do this with the kids for years doing some sulfa but hopefully we'll be able to work those lessons in but that's the one thing that I'm kind of trying out new so we'll see if we manage to get that in but something really really cool that we're doing this year that is new is one day one Monday a month the kids will wake up and instead of seeing their morning basket they'll see all these letters and we are going to call it mailbox morning basket sorry had to swallow mail box morning basket and I have a mailbox letter subscription for each of them so for my oldest daughter I have heritage letter and then for my oldest son he has writings from the wild and then for my youngest son he has Francis and Friends which is a cute little farm yard thought barnyard farm one and I did buy the extra sticker so that my youngest daughter is also getting something and so I'll give you a little overview of what these are about youngest for him I have these Francis and friends letters this one's super cute and every month they send a letter from Francis which is the little barnyard goat and it's a different animal that's on the farm and it's super cute and colorful and it comes with a different sticker every month and then I added I think it was like 50 Cent's we get a second sticker every month so Annabeth feels included if it happens to be a day that she's sitting at the table with us and then for Jesse my middle guy we got him a subscription to writings from the wild now writings from the wild is beautiful and I'm getting the envelope on the stuff here and that this one felt a little more you know appropriate for his age this is a letter about a wild animal every month and this one is the hummingbird it comes with a little fact card every single month as well so he has these to hang up in his room and then we have these letters to keep in our basket the kids can review them all month long and I just think these are absolutely stunning I know he has the one that just arrived that he hasn't opened yet is a shark I think it's a mako maybe it's a hammerhead I can't remember I follow them online and then you kind of get a sneak peek at what the newest letter is gonna be and then for my daughter we have heritage letter which you guys have seen before every single month they get a letter that is written from somebody in American history you get a letter and then like a little artifact and then a little a portrait and timeline card which this is really cool she really likes this and what I really like about having these in the morning basket is that I tend to be somebody who really locks in on where we're at in history or what we're studying in science and it just kind of overtakes everything we do like if we're studying a certain time period then I want our artists and our composer to all be from that time period or we've got the who was booked or some kind of biography that I put in our basket and that's all my kids are hearing about and I'm just you know I'm just I'm only human like I don't always look outside of what I'm focused on that particular month I can't I don't randomly throw a hummingbird to our home school so getting these letters every month is a really neat way to change up the pace a little and then for one day instead of doing morning basket and it kind of hopefully will bleed into the rest of our day the kids can be doing research and looking up info maybe finding documentaries just kind of like changes the pace of our day so we have a wild animal will have a barnyard animal will have some American history and then the kids have all so we just did this the other day they all ran off and read their letters in their beds and they came back to the table and like exchanged him up and all ran off and read the other person's letters so I think this is gonna be a really fun way to change that morning basket one day a month just something for them to look forward to I run out and I grab the letters and I hide them because they all arrive on different days of the month and then once they've all arrived I'll set them in the morning basket so that is what it's in our morning basket for this upcoming year you guys will have to let me know down below how you guys do morning basket because every I think it looks so different in everyone's home make sure that one you pop on over to Jessica's channel their morning baskets are amazing and it's gonna be really cool the way she's doing it this year it's definitely gonna be different for how they've done it in the past and I think it will inspire you guys quite a bit and then also make sure that you go on and enter that giveaway which is a really neat giveaway and I'm super super super thankful to heritage letter for offering to give aways this week so thank you guys for sticking around for this lengthy video I hope it gave you some inspiration if you have any questions leave those in the comments below and I will see you guys tomorrow bye guys you
