the description welcome back to build biology my favorite show if you are into the nerdy stuff the technical side you want to learn about fabrication and what it takes to build some of the craziest cars that we've ever seen this is the show to do it the cool thing is this season we're not just staying here at the donut garage okay we're going to different cities different states maybe even different countries so we can check out some of the coolest builds that people are doing or have done or maybe even have in the works last season right we had guys like Riley Starr and his wicked bundle of snakes Trans Am from SEMA built it on inside of his house mm-hmm the land speed car speed demon that thing was insane like 40 feet long didn't even know I was interested in it world's fastest door slammer mule bodied 55 with like a jillion horsepower big red which is arguably the coolest car I've ever seen in my life we had trophy trucks we had drag cars we had drift cars but there was one thing that we didn't have last season and that's a monster truck [Music] son of a digger finally made it grave digger pops the whole family's into it yeah everybody I started out like my dad created gravedigger in 82 traded me in 1989 so I was woke up by gravy every morn in my life I know nothing but this probably wouldn't even be good at bagging groceries if I had to so I'm stuck in the monsters I don't think I'd want you to bagging groceries yeah anyway there's a huge monster truck in here that we didn't think was gonna fit first shot we didn't measure one try flipped it right in the house people delivery to start with I mean this has some history to it yeah yeah so I wanted to spin off of gravedigger I'm still part of the digger team but I'm not the same I went with a 1950 Willy's panel so it was my granddad's hot rod was this body style so I wanted to do that to kind of pay you know pay respects to my granddad like the original hot rodder the guy that made my dad crazy like this which then turned me crazy the wrap on this thing has a huge story behind it because if you look on the side of grave digger it's really well known for having a graveyard and on every tombstone is every competitor it's like we took him out we you know dug them a grave they're done well I wanted to do something like that but a little bit different so I did a junkyard and in my junkyard are my biggest competitors and their trucks are crashed smashed upside-down when you look deeper into it there's actually a story line that Burgundy truck right there was the first thing ever called grave digger so it was actually a mud truck and this is what my dad started out with it was a truck that he paid 50 bucks for the body Jeep Kaiser axles and he had a turbo 350 tool drive with a homemade coupler to a granular 4-speed transmission without the bellhousing bone-stock motor with 57 inch tall tires and then when you go all the way to the front you see this thing what we call it grave digger the legend so this was the first ever panel this is a 1950 Ford panel every vehicle they had all their farm vehicles were all blue and gray so he got the free paint job they said I didn't you have the biggest vehicle here over everybody well if we give you like 100 bucks where you crushed this car of course my dad being freaking wild had a mullet it was rad kills it off the car which you know that day killing it was like it did a wheelie and it fell down so everybody's oh my god this is awesome so he started getting hired to drive like crushed cars so he's like all right the name grave digger does not match blue and gray it's not correlating so he found this crazy dude that painted Harley tanks local to us and this guy like always did these crazy paint jobs for $500 this dude painted the entire truck 100% hand on airbrush made the great for your paint job so this is what we call grandma now that was the first ever monster truck gravedigger a lot of people are called man what's the tunnel there it's it's actually a Quonset hut style shop it's a version of a shop that my dad's first ever shop was a Quonset hut it's cool because it's funny he's like you explaining tattoos yeah it's like I'll guess wood but you actually have a really cool story it's a life history of the truck explain to me the wheel tire combo what is it what does it even come from is it all custom-made stuff yourself initially we started out with like tractor stuff like you know you know combine tires and things a guy well now BTT actually makes a custom Monster Jam tire like this is specifically made for us monster truck use only down to like the side cleat is all custom designed just for us so that goes back to that too will you know tricks that I'm trying to pull off with these skills challenge yeah we want not a crazy amount of traction on the sidewall but we need some so when we get up on the sides we can just save it we can get it back on the wheels things like that these tires are 66 inches tall 43 inches wide and I mean 675 pounds give or take for each tire are 675 yeah wheels are obviously custom-made for us we do bend them this rim is my lucky rim so no that's not how they normally look but this rim went through the all-star challenge which is like a big deal and I somehow just dominated it was awesome I killed it so I was bragging on my crew got Mike come on do at least paint this thing he's like nope it's a good luck charm so it's been going ever since it's probably the only wheel that's still been on here every wheel is all new I noticed that comes in 25 inch wheel the wheels are I want to say they're like a 40 40 inches wide yeah so actually the real magic to this thing this Monster Jam truck being able to spin these things like crazy is we have a planetary system yeah gear reduction system right there at the hub so I actually got one over here we can peek at well show you how this thing works this is the outside which normally would have a plate this is what we call our Sun gear so inside this thing it's very heavy this is our what we call our planetary gears right here there's three of them mm-hmm the Sun gear goes in to the front just like this and then that goes to our outer axle which is here is we actually call Rosella so this thing is like crazy it gets pretty greasy and then this big huge thing goes on the end of this big huge inter axle so that's what it looks like inside there and we break these really like we break these pretty often there's actually a bull gear back in the and inside the hub that's just a big inverted gear that all these gears ride on and when the axle shaft comes through engages into this Sun gear which spins these planetary gears that goes to the bull gear and he gives it a three to one reduction so even we still run a 621 gear ratio and our ringing this is reducing everything even more yes so ours is big yeah drive shafts are spinning like crazy everything just to get this thing to go this fast even for any guys doing race car stuff and you talk about rotational mass and stuff like that guy shaving weight down like by getting different lug nuts just yeah couldn't even 675 pounds yeah just a wheel what does this even come from these made for us this is all customers made for us yeah so cuz this is man this is like 2013 it was like you know we do the custom housing that adapts to these planetaries it works to get a better look at that right here so you can see these actual doubters are rated like 20 tons it's like a normal truck isn't you like a quarter ton yeah everytime 420 so this flange here out actually originally came from a crane but we now we remake CRD company crane yeah originally came from a crane like yeah huge moving yeah yeah who figured this stuff out how do you figure out you're using something from a crane it's years and years and years of innovation and people trying stuff I just see him saying hey that might work a ton of it started back in the day when it was just not a ton of money in it and a lot of guys would figure out what would work well now that you know they tried everything and you know we they kind of diagnosed it down to these few certain things that are a good combo and now we're like perfecting each one of those things maybe walk us a little bit through what's going on in the back the 106 Center section which on the front side you'll see it actually pops out like a Ford nine-inch axe yeah this is a custom built housing for us and the housings are front and rear match identical so it you can have will have a complete axle ready to go during the show if like it really gets bad and we'll swap a whole rear end out just instead of tearing everything up obviously with them both being the same they both steer so the front and rear tire steer and next year separately so we actually have an electric hydraulic motor that is controlled by toggle switch in the cab that controls the rear steering in this system right here this is actually our self centering systems okay so anytime the rear and moves it triggers that ball switch to let it know this off center and it'll automatically bring it back to Center what is the weight of the steering in this it'll feel like our front steering is fully hydraulic it's actually got a mechanical driven pump you can actually see right there off the crank so a big huge pump is actually originally was May for like a wet lines on a like a work truck that was the only thing that we've been able to get that we've with a few modifications we'll take the RPM that we're throwing in it and also keep up with the steering so our steering is sluggish it's just off the crank yeah straight off the crank man direct drive [Music] we were on a really long floating bar falling bars are like 52 inches on the bottom and 53 inches on top so super long compared a normal car that's wooden ages do in we're doing two we do at 250 wall do em and we run all FK Hans I just have have a hind right here we can show you so this is our four link on this was a shock hime that wood goes on the end of our shock but I would say this is probably more considerable like normal sized messes ours we were on all of our suspension components made by FK it's crazy strong it's just insane we've tried multiple different versions brands and that's the only one that holds yeah you see the disinter section there the crazy thing you notice is the brakes are mounted to our opinion the reason for doing that for one the wheel brakes would be massive but also the leverage through the gearing yeah makes that thing so powerful so it looks pretty small and compared to the rest of the truck but seriously it doesn't matter how fast I'm going what surface I'm on it will lock all four tires up yeah instantly and like easy that's amazing yeah they're insanely powerful but at the same time if you're with the right foot you can actually control them really well so much more mechanical advantage through that yeah absolutely just like if if you're on a lift right and you have your drive shaft disconnected and you've got to crank that on your diff and watch your wheel spin yeah you have so much force to do it yeah and now imagine this 621 gear ratio with 3:1 deduction it's like super easy yeah yeah seems like one of the most important things especially for you start/stop yeah really in the the two-wheel cavitation stuff is like that yeah sure it seems like super important that's sort of I've always liked about your driving is just watching how much you can go back and forth between that stuff and how how you have to be in the presence of mine yeah yeah to rotate the truck thirty inch travel shocks on the rear 26 inch travel shocks on the on the front so this is custom-made to G's are 100% monster-truck shock like they are not made for anything else but monster trucks what is the weight of this truck this truck is it's 10,000 pounds without the tires 12,000 pounds with the tires there's a ton of unsprung unsprung weight with these axles they're super heavy I mean they're like forty five thousand dollars a piece for one of these axles but they're I have to guess they're I haven't weighed an axle with all the tires before but it's easily probably 1,500 pounds and I was gonna look at a car yeah exactly like a small car what height are you guys hitting on on the biggest jumps you're hitting the biggest jumps were honestly getting like over 50 foot in the air over 50 feet and believe me like it's one of those things especially when you're driving around like you get in the moment like all these people are cheering you want to go crazy and you line up for a jump and just go for like your Adrenaline's pumping and I'm not gonna lie when you go like like 35 40 foot plus you're like dang you have a lot of time to think about what you did so it's Dyson I mean as much as it does soak the landing up it takes it it's still in abruptly still really nice you can do about it it's the biggest thing is we don't have a ton of four of them in them we were jumping that high [Applause] the max speed we're gonna be getting is like 4050 miles an hour like Max right honestly more and more than that we're like 30 miles an hour on average our shock valving is insanely stiff compared to any other motorsport yeah by power I got it man nobody wants to know 540 cubic inch Ward product block products BB 3 heads we run in per hour crank and rocker arm assembly up top comp cam a little field 871 standard helix which is a rule in Monster Jam you cannot go any bigger than the 572 cubic inch motor you cannot have bigger than 871 blower it cannot be anything more than a standard helix blower and you also can't spin the blower any more than 10% faster than the crank we still are making 1,400 horsepower anyway it depends we've got 90 of these motors at our shop 1,400 yeah we have 90 of these things how long does it motor last we actually get like 20 hours out of these things which is crazy it doesn't sound like a lot probably started off anyone who you are I was thinking about track stuff yeah drag guys they they rebuild this stuff all the time I thought you guys were pretty similar to that like you'd one-and-done yeah no an hour meter right here what's this 1:28 oh look at that we got old trusty here yes that's I mean that's like the top so really honestly within the next couple weeks we'll probably end up pulling this motor if it doesn't explode just to freshen it up before it does on the transmission we're we're running a power glide two-speed Powerglide standard ratio we're not getting crazy with changing ratios like on a drag car guys do and actually a lot of drag car guys would be like ah he probably runs like the big shaft and things like that we've actually had problems with the bigger shaft input and output because it reduces the flow of transmission fluid what is your biggest point of failure I'd say I would maybe say the transmissions but it's it's a hundred percent user error yeah as always it's not it's never just the transmission just failed don't know without a extreme amount of abuse and time run on it but the biggest thing is with these new tricks we're doing we're like kind of like our transmission guys not a fan of the trick competition but we're jamming this thing from Ford cram and brakes going to reverse balancing up there and then when you're on the nose it's uh I mean this thing doesn't really balance that great you know if you know you imagine that so you're going back and forth between forward and reverse and it's not easy you know I see many do it quite a few situation like you yeah so that would be like probably our biggest driveline issue is and it's strictly because if the driver doesn't get it in the proper gear then it's you know the transfers that or that braking at the wrong time landing in the brakes is like an ultimate nono that's like kind of one of those things I have you like on your first jump in a Monster Jam truck if you land in the brakes you like you're done like that's just like if you're a brake man your brake man this pump is electric over hydraulic big huge crazy electric motor that's the reservoir for it this is a electric style like like still annoyed valve that's gonna tell each direction which way to go we have pressure relief valves anytime you jump and land with one tire first at an angle it's got a relief there if not we're blowing hydraulic lines we have the same thing we have two pressure relief valves for the front as well will be blowing lines even with the relief valves so you have to discover this system yeah see if it works yeah I discovered how much there to plead out yeah yes it's it's not like we've we're still like every day we're innovating the rear steer to make it not only last longer be stronger faster all those things so like we're constantly changing stuff with the rear steer I want to talk to you about the transfer case so this thing is what's like transferring all the power from up top of that motor that's backwards spinning the wrong way things like that goes down and transfers everything to our drive shafts going to the axles when we hit the brakes but these things going like 60 it's equivalent to like the same load you would put on a normal car brake if you were going 200 miles an hour so that's why you see the the rotors glow so commonly and all that stuff that because it's just crazy at 60 yeah the BK T's are definitely the best tire we've ever had but some of the old tires weren't very true and dude it would like to shake you so but yeah let's get the guys to pop a wheel off right yeah sure you know this was like the coolest hang out underneath a truck just hey how's it going oh you're good all right so now I can show you like the real Goods here so this is a good look at that you know the shock the bump stop obviously is a lifesaver the very last minute you're going huge going crazy out driving the shocks at least you have a little bit of something to land on these are made for us strictly so these things are kind of a lifesaver are limited straps we have to run a limit strap because the piston inside of this thing is aluminum we don't want that aluminum to be yanked on so we have this limited strap keeping the shock from getting totally topped out ripped keeps all the valving 100% from getting smacked or hit by anything at all and just saves it makes it shocks last a million times longer you gotta check out my door handle under here let's go ahead pop it down get in there dude climb up left foot right foot best of luck to you right beside the steering wheel you see that toggle switches basically on a pistol grip right there with the black cover yeah yeah grab that thing that switch on top goes left and right this one and it steers the back tires left and right it's not it's not on you and boom like that yeah then there's switch in front of that that's facing the other way yeah is this self centering disarm switch so if you want to go for a donut you don't want to just kill the electronic over hydraulic pump you don't want to deadhead that pump for so long so you'll turn yourself centering system off get your tires turn as far as you want to go rip into the donut and when you're done with the donut if you can find the switch being dizzy straighten the wheels back out driving the switch I'm trying to just think how I would sit here [Music] look that power switch right there underneath the Holly - yeah turn that thing on now you see that big blue light that's right in your face yep that's telling me to knock it off you need to like the motor no old pressure motor stop depending on the crowd and you know scenario when you hit that switch it's gonna turn these back tires this one here yes right whoa tell me monster truck press the switches shifter obviously so you can see how much you're gonna have to go through for Jamie clear it's not easy and then you got pulled into the handle and get it just right - it's going to reverse yeah it's crazy it's a left I've seen you do it so many times that's what I've wondered it's like how does he do this so fast that's awesome this is aluminum seat with just foam no suspension whatsoever you have to be in there so tight like you would be super and comfortable if I tighten you down as tight as we go like you wouldn't believe it so the C votes are like unlike anything else in the world they're ratchet it's a seven-point ratcheting seatbelt so there's three different belts to go between your legs the obvious waist belt and in the shorter harnesses the ratcheting system right here is 100% necessary if you don't run ratchets it's because you don't drive hard enough [Music] that's an insane bill there's stuff I didn't know about half of its custom fabrication that is only for monster trucks the other stuff is heavy machinery robbed from cranes and stuff I had no idea so if you have cars you want to see on bill biology comment below the next bill is coming soon thanks for watching when you're racing is that one of the craziest things is the suspension travel drops so much in the front and so far down in the back and with mine having that big flat hood it's like a long nose Peterbilt you know like you can't see nothing let's trade jobs per day yes this kid and I don't want to do this this looks terrifying a can't see
