hello i'm craig lieberman if you don't know who i am you're not alone i'm a gearhead who's been ticking ring on cars since the 1980s i've owned more than 40 cars in that time but i never dreamed that some of my own cars would start in a major movie franchise my r34 gtr my toyota supra and my nissan maxima all had starring roles in universal's first two fast and furious movies and i served as a technical advisor to these early films i've raced open-wheel cars shifter carts and others i love all things automotive and my videos help me share my passion with like-minded people all around the world one of the most mysterious cars of the franchise has got to be the s15 that we know as the mona lisa despite its relatively brief appearance in the movie it made a big impact like here and here and here and here for car lovers this scene was painful to watch the way the movie portrayed it sean boswell had about as much driving and talent as those dudes at intersection takeovers there's so much misinformation floating around about this car fans have never really been told the truth that's largely because the truth is hard to uncover mysteries surround the origin of these cars how they got to america and where they ended up after the movie wrap mysteries about the specs of these cars are no easier to unravel it doesn't help that the movie itself pretty much sets some of these rumors in motion by showing an rb26 under the hood of this car in one of their shots this is the scene where sean and his posse pull the engine out of a wrecked s15 and start installing it into the mustang the truth about this scene is that the s15 never ran with an rb26 in it it was completely faked and just because you saw a static shot of the engine in the car it doesn't mean that that's what actually powered the car it also doesn't help that click bait websites like fandom are completely wrong about most of these cars so if you're looking to fan them as a source they're pretty much fake news what actually happened is that universal's picture car team had pulled one of the rb-26s from one of the leftover gtrs that we had lying around after shooting two fast two furious it was then in the process of being installed into the s15 at this point gtr guru sean moore stepped in when we saw this and told them to put the rb26 back into the r34 gtr to keep it as a numbers matching car and sean would provide a used rb that he pulled out of an r32 since then the world has just assumed that the s15 actually ran with an rb26 and many websites listed like that with that myth now dispelled we can move on the mystery deepens when i started researching the origins of these cars i had always assumed that new era imports provided these cars but after reaching out to them they simply stated that they did not provide these cars for this production miguel at new era stated that they did buy two of these cars after the movie with the intent of reselling both of those cars which is what they did one of those cars went to england the other one went to japan those two cars had the autec naturally aspirated sr-20de engine new era was unsure of how many total cars were sourced given the number of crashes in this car's big scene it's obvious that at least two stunt cars had to be used probably more the number one i had always heard was six to eight cars and that makes sense one source close to production told me as much and he said that six of them were tv three blue cars and there were two pewter cars if there were indeed six to eight cars then why haven't they turned up after 15 years what makes the most sense is this these cars might have been brought in without being federalized and so technically they would not be allowed to legally remain here in the united states of america of course most states don't care about how these cars got in and since there's no real paper trail on these cars any such cars would be difficult to track and since many states will register anything they could be driving around right now stored in somebody's garage or who knows more likely the owners who have these cars that aren't federally legal are just keeping quiet about these cars which makes a lot of sense generally speaking though the trail has gone cold so after 15 years all i can do is focus on what is known about the two auto powered cars that we've located i found one of these cars in england this one was owned by a fellow called nick nick's car is number 56 on the key car list nick's car was one of the two that nuera sold cosmetic modifications included a full original sea west drift body kit comprised of the front spoiler the side skirts and rear bumper also fitted was an adjustable sea west gt wing and ganondorf mirrors the decal design was specifically commissioned from sea west themselves just for the film and of course the car was completely resprayed and color changed to blue metallic and orange before these decals were applied wheels are volk racing 19 by eight in front 19 by nine and a half in the rear using 275 30 and 235 35 19 toyota tires as i mentioned the power plant is the factory autec unit with about 200 brake horsepower as standard which had received a full hks four into two into one exhaust manifold and sardi aroused megar exhaust system so it was making around probably 220 and maybe another 50 to 100 for the nitrous on tap the nismo clutch and nismo two-way differential were added being naturally aspirated sounded a lot nicer than the turbo car which is why these cars were chosen to provide the sounds for the cars during the production being a factory autec version there's a six-speed gearbox also fitted in the boot there's also a racing fuel cell as well inside this car there's a recaro fia approved bucket seat the interior trim has been all removed with all but the dashboard remaining a nitrous bottle and the relevant plumbing have been installed in place of the passenger seat and a roll cage had been added an aluminum center console was fabricated to house the auto meter gauges and the nitrous switch all within the driver's reach nick said that he sold the car to someone in norway a few years back the new owner was from thailand but apparently worked in norway and that's where the car sat until recently unfortunately the guy who bought the car in norway pretty much ruined the car nick was devastated when i told him all about this car but good news just came through this weekend i was literally prepping to film this video when i learned that just this weekend a well-known movie car fan in germany named christopher has just purchased this car and you can bet it will be restored towards former glory another car was recently found in france i've known about this car for some time and it's now owned by a really nice fellow by the name of mickey clay mickey's car is number 51 on the key list mickey's carve came from ireland and was originally purchased straight from new era by a guy called declan who lived in ireland after 10 years of ownership he then sold at the sum chap in county galloway which is in western ireland mickey who is affiliated with the movie cars central folks in france purchased this car in early 2020. the car is in pretty good shape now and they're still in the process of cleaning it up and making some improvements mickey was kind enough to share this video in which he gives a tour of the car i'll leave the link in the description it's in france it's in french so i hope you can follow it in the video he explains that the car needed some restoring that required repainting of certain sections of the car and looking at it on camera looks fantastic this car of course actually this car also has the naturally aspirated sr20de which is great but he wants to make improvements to some things under the hood so we'll see how that turns out the car is still in france and may turn up at some car shows in europe after covet lives so if you live in europe you'll probably see it at some point i also recently found a fellow in the southeast portion of the united states who showed me pictures of a car he now owns the back story is that this fellow purchased his car from a fellow who had previously installed a kazamo auto wide body kit and before that this car was running around with the rocket bunny kit this car was purchased from a fellow called tanner who then sold it to another individual i reached out to both of the previous owners but only one of them replied that's all i could really find on any of these cars so if these cars are still here in the usa some might be hidden scavenged for parts or turned into drift missiles if you're cringing at the thought of a movie car being turned into a drift car it actually makes sense because arguably the cars in tokyo drift weren't as fancy as the cars in the first two movies they lacked the custom interiors the shiny engine bits and the show quality audio video systems that we found in the cars in the first two movies these were stripped out cars with the roll cage drift cars don't need four woofers six amps and neon lights sheet metal interiors with the only the items needed to make the car competitive in competition were the way to go it makes the car more authentic as a drift car and without the fancy interiors these cars were much easier to build for the picture car team somehow though the lack of these modifications probably made them a little less special to collectors and when these cars started to get sold they didn't quite have the panache or provenance that the cars from the first movies did and of course neither paul walker nor vin diesel drove any of these cars what's fascinating though is the thought that someone might be driving one of these cars around right now and they don't even know that their car was a movie car as time passes these undiscovered and unwanted cars will fade into history their parts removed or reused on other cars unrelated to the movie and the chassis slowly mutilated at drift events at some point they'll all be gone and the memories will live on only on cable tv so if you know where any of these cars are let me know in the comments below or drop me an email thanks for watching everybody if you're liking what you're seeing please don't forget to subscribe i'll see you next time [Music] you
