PAUL WALKER'S PERSONAL GT-R

[Music] thanks for tuning in i'm craig lieberman and i've been tinkering on cars since 1980. i've owned more than 40 cars in my life some were heroes some were zeros but never in my wildest dreams would i ever guess that three of my cars would go on to star in a motion picture franchise my supra my gtr and my maxima all had starting roles in universal's fast and furious movies over the next three years i had served universal as a technical advisor i helped choose the cars procure the parts oversee their builds and support both production and post-production i've got some great stories to tell and that's why i created this channel hope you liked the video [Music] what's up everybody despite the fact that the fast and furious franchise is built around cool cars you might be surprised to find that very few of the actors are actual true car enthusiasts jordana brewster for example didn't even have a driver's license when we started filming the first movie and neither did michelle rodriguez michelle did get into cars after filming and in fact after she got her license she quickly racked up 11 points on it and while those are fun pieces of trivia the fact remains that there are really only a few true car enthusiasts amongst the entire cast you can count jason statham and a couple others among them but the two most obvious true car guys are sung kang and paul walker i think most people already know this of course most people know that paul had a pretty wild collection of cars that included mustangs bmws and a handful of jdm cars including the super from fast 7 and several skyline gtrs that he owned over the years including r35s r32s and r34s but for this video we're going to focus on this gtr there's much confusion about this car and how he came to be a fan of skylines in the first place so today i'm going to try and clear that up most of you know i first met paul at the first casting call for cars as we were prepping for the very first movie after test driving my supra paul spent some time with sean morris who was there to talk about other cars including skylines and he had brought an r32 to show to the producers and paul saw it as well paul was intrigued by the r32 he liked it very much sometime after the first fast and furious movie rap though paul and i went over to motorex together which at the time was the only company in the usa bringing these cars into the united states legally the operative word being legally paul first drove the blackbird and motorex loaned it to him for an extended test drive that test drive lasted a few months this is why people are confused about whether or not paul actually owned the blackbird he didn't it was a loaner car for reasons still unclear to me he decided that the blackbird wasn't his first choice and so he looked around at other cars in the inventory and what was coming in so instead he ended up settling for this gtr a 1999 v spec in sonic silver paint code car kr04 the factory sonic silver is not the same silver as the too fast too furious gtr which was a house of color platinum pearl pbc042 as i recall paul held onto the silver car for a little while and then someone pointed out to him that the paint had a few issues gtrs of this color offered have mismatched bumpers and taillight surrounds because of the way these cars were painted in japan so paul decided to give it back and look for something else and then he then picked up a white v-spec 2 which ended up getting a bunch of tome goodies when the hawaiian guy got the silver car he decided he wanted to build a replica of the blackbird if that seems odd to you you have to remember that the blackbird was out long before too fast too furious was ever conceived so this car was not modeled after my movie gtr it was a silver replica of the blackbird in addition to the full sea west body kit the hawaiian owner also made other upgrades to the car as shown here these upgrades included an hks front mount intercooler coilovers advanced sienna wheels a breather tank and a few other choice mods including the three thousand dollar dry carbon hood and the carbon deraj the fan cooling panel as shown here this was not a cheap build despite the short parts list the parts that were added were all in the name of performance and they came from top jdm brands and while it looks like the movie car i want to stay clearly again that this car was not used in too fast too furious different car after modifying the car the hawaiian owner drove this car for a couple of years but it ended up being seized by the dea not because it had anything to do with motor x or the car itself but because it was part of an asset forfeiture ruling the guy basically got in trouble with the law and he had to give up this car apparently hawaii 5-0 did their job well the feds really and the car was subsequently sold at auction someone in texas ended up purchasing the car and they held on to it for almost 15 years when this car came up for sale in 2020 the toprank imported vehicle.com guys acquired it and now it sits with them this is where i filmed the car this car is special for many reasons as you can probably guess for starters this car is a fully federally legal motorex car and has a supporting documentation to prove that it is one of only 14 or so fully federally legal motorix gtrs in the united states so before you start asking questions again let me stress this car is a fully federally legal motor x card these questions always seem to come up whenever i talk about legalization of gtrs so how much is this car worth well i have some data for you we can look at some recent sales transactions of some of the 14 existing fully federally legal motorex cars and that data is probably going to shock some people that data shows us basically that these cars are fetching about 300 000 us dollars as of mid-2020 supply and demand man that's the way it goes this one would cost more much more although this car was never actually used in any movie it was paul walker's actual personal car once these cars become legal in 2024 you can bet that prices will be north of a hundred thousand dollars why because even looking at japanese auction prices today here in mid 2020 any decent r34 gtr is up over 85 000 many or over a hundred thousand i just saw one sell for 150 000 at auction and that's before shipping and processing you also have to remember that nissan produced a little more than 11 000 gtrs during their total run that sounds like a lot but it's not assuming about 20 of those cars have been crushed or turned into race cars or sitting in some collector's warehouse that leaves about 9 000 gtrs available to satisfy the entirety of global demand and people in many parts of the world are gtr crazy and have been for a long time australia europe the middle east malaysia thailand and when these cars are finally legal in the usa it will undoubtedly drive up prices simply because of supply and demand issues there's just no other way to get around that all that aside there are several gtrs that are truly special and will demand even higher prices the midnight purple cars v spicks v-spec 2's millennium jade cars and cars like this one paul's personal r34 gtr when i met paul he was into muscle cars but by the time we were shooting too fast too furious he was a true jdm fan working with paul on set of the first two movies was a pleasure and we often talked about cars working with paul on set of the two fast and fear movies was a pleasure and we often talked about cars although he owned a 1966 chevy 2 when i met him it was clear that he was quickly becoming a fan of the japanese sports cars he was naturally inquisitive asked many questions and became a sponge as he soaked up information about the cars their performance capabilities and their trim levels over time of course he grew to be a fan of bmws porsches and many other cars eventually amassing a collection of interesting cars some of which were sold at the barrett-jackson auction in early 2020. i was there to witness it this is what makes people like paul and sun kang true car fans and the best ambassadors of the automotive hobby this is because they collect cars and play with cars even when there are no movie cameras around while each of us may have a favorite platform all true car people appreciate the uni while each of us may have a favorite platform all true car people appreciate the unique attributes of almost any car this is why we are all brothers and sisters our passion for cars are shared with people all over the world rich poor young or old we love cars paul did too the last time i saw paul was at a race track in 2009 or so he was driving an r35 gtr an audi a porsche gt3 and a bmw m3 all in one day he was a true car enthusiast he was a true car enthusiast and this car is a reminder of his passion his passion for cars was real and this provenance makes this particular gtr very very special so if you have about 400 000 bucks burning a hole in your pocket and you like the r34 gtrs you might want to consider owning this piece of history either way this car is a lasting icon by
