hey guys it's brian from navyupgrade.com today i've got a really cool tutorial where i'm going to be teaching you how to install fmods toolkit onto your sync 3 apem and display please keep in mind that this is going to be a bit more of an advanced tutorial as you're going to need to take out the screen and a pim from your vehicle and you're going to use a specialized piece of hardware a specialized piece of technology specifically for disassembling uh your apem module and placing one of the boards onto this guy right here i want to give a huge shout out to the guys over at fmods.net including aaron uh he's a moderator over there so thanks to you aaron for all of your hard work in the sync 3 community he's put together all this really awesome stuff including a sync 3 video player sync 3 custom backgrounds and a whole bunch of other really awesome mods that we're going to be able to do once we finish the install today i want to point out that these mods are extremely experimental and that you should only be doing this to a car that you don't mind taking apart and maybe not having it working when you get it back together so make sure that you actually have an extra apim available or something like that so that you're not left stranded without a sync 3 system for your car without further ado let's get right on in to what you'll need to complete this project you're going to need a sync 3 display and apem so you're going to need to go take this out of your car or buy a separate one to do this process too so the first thing that i always recommend with these is go and update it to the latest sync 3 version you can check out my video up here on how to do that and then you'll be able to start the process of doing the fmods hacks next you're going to need an emmc reader such as this there are a couple different versions out there this one is for usually cars between 2016 and 2018. after 2018 it gets a little dicey some of them have a different pin out structure and you'll need to get a different one for that next you're going to need a flash drive that's over 32 megabytes in size i've got a 32 gigabyte one here that'll work just fine you're also going to need a windows pc because we're going to be running a virtual machine with blackberry qnx software on it finally you're going to need a phillips head screwdriver so we can take apart the screen and the apim and mount the board to this device right here so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to flip our screen upside down just like this and we're going to grab our phillips head screwdriver and we're going to start removing these screws right here there's one right here and what we're doing right now is we're removing the apim module from the screen set your screws in a safe place and finally there's one last one under here i'm still gonna grab it right here and then we'll get the cable off in a second all right finally that we have this uh cable right here this is called your lvds cable which is a low voltage display signal cable it sends display information to and from the module and the screen so what we're going to do is we're going to push down on this tab and we're going to wiggle this guy out just like that and now we can set our screen aside and you're left with your a pin module just like this we're going to be removing all of these screws right here so that we can access the board that's inside of here all right now we can just flip this just like that to get this cover off and now what you're left with is you're left with your boards that are inside of here so what we're going to do is we're going to kind of lift up right here and push on the back side right here we're going to push right there and we're going to lift and push and you can see this is our this is our motherboard this is what i would call this this is a motherboard and then what we have down here is we have the daughter board so this is what we're going to actually be doing the module riding to so we're going to remove this board four phillips head screws hold this down and now you should be able to remove the board just by kind of lifting up on it just like that you can set the shell aside and now we can get on to the fun part which is hacking this thing so uh what i'm going to do is i'm going to take my emmc reader so check this out you have this row of little spots right here that's those are actually little soldering marks that actually correspond with circuitry on the board and this is actually what our our tool down here is going to connect to so what we do is we say oh those are there so we're going to flip the board just like that and i'm going to push down and push down on these tabs and then release the tabs just like that now let's get into setting up the virtual machine so that we can actually write to this bad boy and get our mods installed all right so the first thing that we're going to do when we get into our computer is we're going to go to virtualbox.org and we're going to download virtualbox just click that big old button and click windows hosts right here and it's going to download virtualbox right here in the meantime you can go over to this link and it is going to be in the description of this video and we're going to download this as well all right i already have this downloaded so i'm actually going to cancel that and then lastly we're going to download the qnx neutrino rtos evaluation runtime so all you need to do is you need to click register this link's going to be in the description as well and you just enter your email enter a little bit of details and the file will automatically start downloading i already have this on my computer as well so i'm going to close this out and then finally you're going to make a username on fmods.net and i already have one so i'm going to log in so i'm already logged in here and we're going to go into sync 3 and we're going to go to uh usb mods installer right here and we're going to download the daemon installer version 1.1 and i already have this downloaded as well but uh that's okay and we're going to go back and we're going to install virtualbox all right so we're gonna click next next and next and yes and install and uh this is a user account control a pop-up you probably can't see it in the video recording but you're just going to click yes on this it says do you want this do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device make sure you click yes all right well that's installing oh it looks like it's finished already so we're going to click start oracle vm virtual box click finish and as you can see here i already have mine installed i don't know why it's still there so i'm going to remove it so i can teach you guys how to set it up we're going to delete all files and that's okay we're good there so the next thing that we're going to do is we're going to go into our downloads and we've got our qnx evaluation thing right here so we're just going to extract it i've got 7-zip on my computer so it makes it super easy to extract and what we're going to do is we're going to minimize this and we're going to open up virtualbox manager and click new and here's where we're going to type in uh qnx sync 3 and i'm going to make this all the way up to 4 gigabytes so 4096 megabytes click next and we're going to use an existing virtual hard disk uh file so all we need to do is we need to click this little folder here we're going to click add and now what we do is we go back into our downloads go into the qnx eval rt folder that we downloaded and extracted and we go into this folder and we're going to select the smaller of these two selectable files here so the top one is one kilobyte we're going to select that one right there so we just click it click open and we click choose and we click create all right now we're good with our virtual machine so now let's get our usb set up we're going to plug in our usb thumb drive here it's going to recognize it and pop up on our screen now we're just going to split this screen here real quick and what i'm going to do is i'm going to go to the fmod daemon install and i'm going to extract this so we're going to say extract to fmod daemon install okay and i'm going to copy these files over onto this flash drive so these files are copied over onto this flash drive now what we can do is we can get into our virtual machine so we click start and you'll see that the virtual machine is starting to boot you're going to get a couple things here so it's going to ask q and x v 1.2 b and it automatically figures that out itself and here we go so now the important thing to realize is that this is a virtual machine so it's going to be its own mouse and everything inside of here so once you click into here you're not going to be able to click back out into windows without a special shortcut so let's get in here and i'll teach you that shortcut expand this and i this is too small for me in my opinion i want to really be able to show you guys what's going on so i'm clicked into into the virtual machine now i'm going to make the window size 1280 by 1024 and everything's good there we're going to click apply and now it takes up a nice chunk here we're going to click accept and we click exit now we're at our login page so all we need to do is we need to type in root and password here is going to be password enter to login now we're going to go to utilities and file manager and what you'll see here is let's make this a little bit bigger is that inside of here we've got a root folder and then we've got this folder called fs as you can see right now there's nothing inside of it so what we're going to do is we're going to get out of our vm and into just windows so what we do for that is we hit our right control keyboard key and that brings us out and we can go up to the top here and we click devices we go to usb and we click usb disk 2.0 yours might be labeled something different like sandisk or something like that depending on the usb thumb drive that you're using so i'm going to click this and enable it and it detaches it from the windows computer and it attaches it to our virtual machine here so all we need to do is we need to click refresh inside of this fs panel right here and we're going to go to usb and we're going to copy these files by clicking the bottom and then shift clicking the top and then we're going to right click and click copy then we're going to go down to our temporary folder down here and we're just going to paste these right on in here all right so now that we've done that all we need to do is uh we need to go into our terminal we go into our terminal and we type in cd slash tmp and that brings us to the temporary directory there and we apply a file permissions command so we go chmod and we go a plus x see daemon underscore installer dot sh all right we're good there and now what we need to do is we need to plug in our emmc reader so bring your emmc reader over you can disconnect your usb thumb drive and we're going to plug in our emmc reader as you can see we have a red light here and we have a blue light right there which is exactly what we need so now what we need to do is we need to click the right control button again on our keyboard and we're going to go back into devices up here we're going to go to usb and we are going to select generic mass storage device uh yours might be called something different but in my case it's generic mass storage device oh and i forgot all about this part so because there's a whole bunch of partitions on this sync 3 emmc module inside of here you're going to get a whole bunch of these windows popping up all you need to do is exit out of all of them cancel and make sure you cancel this where it says insert disk or format disk or anything like that going to cancel all those and make them go away so now what we can do is we can go back into devices we're going to click usb and we're going to click generic mass storage device for this one so now it unmounts it from the pc and it mounts or unmounts it from windows rather and it mounts it into our qnx virtual machine and to double check that it's mounted in here we'll go in here and we'll go back into fs and you'll see two partitions here you'll see usb 0 and usb 1 and now what we can do is we can go back to our terminal which we have open still and all we need to do is type in sh and we type in daemon underscore installer.sh then we just hit enter and it's going to write our hack to the apim board so now it's going to install the script checking partition 0 it says that the partition 0 exists and daemon is not installed so it makes the changes to the partition and then it checks partition 1 and it's okay if it says this where it says uh sync 3 partition one does not contain sync 3 os or daemon is already installed you'll be just fine there there's no cause for concern all you need to do now is you can disconnect your emmc reader and we can pop this guy up right here we can close out of our virtual machine and we just click power off the machine okay and yep we're good to go there now we can begin to reinstall the board back into our sync 3 casing all right so as you can see here we have our sync 3 casing right here all we need to do is we need to flip it like that and uh this is a connector and it goes just like that just like so it comes in between these two posts here there's only one way for it to go back in we're going to grab our phillips head screwdriver and we're going to reinstall all the screws into the a pim here oopsie daisies all right now we'll take the motherboard the main board here this is what i like to call the daughter board and we're going to face it down just like that and we get it all aligned through there through the bottom and as you can see uh it might be a little difficult to see let's see if we can get you to see it here uh it says press here so all we need to do is we need to push down right there and you can hear it snap into place that's all we need to do there and we can start reinstalling all the screws on the back panel as well all right now that our sync 3 a pim is put back together we can grab our sync 3 display and pop it all back together so we'll hit it all up right here get it all aligned and put in our last three screws all right now we'll just reconnect our lvds cable by pushing it in just like that and you can go reinstall this into your car i'm not going to do that because i've got a bench tester right here so i'm going to plug it all back in and uh what's going on here there we go all right so i also have this uh little usb cable that i use yours will be your hub so don't forget to plug your hub back in and don't forget to pull your gps antenna back in as well so i don't know why this isn't booting we'll find out right now all right should be booting up here any second now all right now we're booting up just like this as you can see we're fully booted up right here and we're ready to make another mod to the usb so that we can install the main modification tool onto our sync 3. so now we're just going to plug our usb stick back into our computer we're going to go back to our downloads and let's make this full screen here so remember that file that we downloaded straight from the ford servers the jr3t 14g 381 ax so we're just going to extract this again if you don't have 7zip i highly recommend it it's a great piece of software really makes extracting things a lot faster it's open source and free all right so let's go back into this folder that we extracted we're going to go into sync my ride and we're going to take this file right here hb5t-14g386-thb.tar.gz and we're going to right-click it again we're going to go to extract to there and the folder pops up here i'm going to extract the file in here again and we're going to take the ut service utility file out of here the reason why this isn't included in the fmods modification package is it's actually a copywritten file from ford so they could get into trouble we can get into trouble you can't get into trouble when you download it straight from ford though so there we go we're going to copy it we're going to go back to our downloads and now we need to download one more thing from fmods we're going to go back to the sync 3 board here and we are going to download the mods tools folder so we just download here and we let it download we'll go back to our into our downloads and now you'll see we have this uh this folder called mods tools we're going to extract this mods tools sync my mod and that file that we copied from that ford package we're just going to paste it in here so it's ut service utility all right so now that we've copied in the ut service utility just like this we're going to go back to mods tools and we're going to copy this entire folder so you should have the sync by mod folder the don't index.msa and the readme.text so we're going to click copy ctrl c and we're going to paste it into our thumb drive over here and now all we need to do is disconnect our thumb drive and plug it into our sync 3 apem hub on in our car so now what you see is we see at mods tools have been installed please remove the usb pen drive to reboot your sync 3. so we remove it and it will reboot let's give it a second here it's still thinking about what's been done to it ah let's see maybe if we plug it back in and all right sometimes this happens no big deal if it does happen just reboot your car not a big deal so i'm just going to unplug from the back and then plug it back in we're going to wait for it to boot and ask me later all right now we've done everything that we need to start installing the f mods modifications to this apem if you have any questions feel free to drop them below check out my other videos in this series to find out how to install things like the video player custom backgrounds and things like that if you like this video i'd really appreciate it if you'd hit that thumbs up button right there and please subscribe to
