[Music] what's up guys we're going to real beats today i'm going to show you guys how to mix and master if you guys haven't subbed already it'll turn post in zombies do so because those have it a lot let's all right into it so before we start with our drums um i just want to go over something very important and that is your equipment um a lot of people are mixing on consumer products and consumer product is meant to sound good um so like beats b pills regular headphones iphone headphones stuff like that those are consumer products so if you don't have that you need to invest in an interface at least something decent or a music production headphones now i know sometimes you can't get those things right so obviously you have to use what you have but i'm just letting you know that right so when someone says invest in yourself that's what they mean um get better equipment so you can hear your music better alright um so i just wanted to quickly go over that because that may be a thing that's holding you back if you feel like your mixes are nice but there's a certain sound you want but you can't get maybe you need to upgrade all right so let's go ahead and get into these drums all right so let's get started with the drums and anything i have here so like this meter on the side chain um anything we do here i will put in the file so that i can download these or whatever but everything is universal all right um so what i have here and what i've done is pretty much made it so a lot of these sounds are about the same volume all right obviously i couldn't make it perfect because this is limited um but i just want to show you how important levels and dynamics are so this is everything at the same value right [Music] right pretty much the same volume here right and this is not something you want and this is why leveling is important right because you're just adjusting the dynamics so i'm gonna put everything reset everything right and this may be a little loud i might turn it down slightly so it doesn't distort too much i'm gonna leave it um you can see the difference here without even leveling it myself [Music] a lot better okay so i just want y'all to keep that in mind right when you're mixing because some people strip their sounds or they make them too low because of these meters here and this is why a lot of people say oh just um just use your ears right because these will lie to you okay so what we're gonna do is i'm gonna show you a way to mix it i'm not gonna do like i do in other videos i'm not gonna i mean i'll talk about ratios and stuff but i want to show you i want to lean towards more why you should be doing these things because i think if you understand why um it'll give you a lot more flexibility to find your own way to do it too okay so let's go ahead and level now this meter will show you whatever you have selected um so i'm just put these two up so it's only showing me the symbol okay so it's great for leveling so a good rule is don't let anything go above your kick so you could put this at zero db whatever you want as long as the rest of these instruments don't go above your kick and i'm gonna show you why because if i put the kick here right um there is you gotta create contrast right so if you don't have contrast it's gonna make your kick sound weak or maybe even too strong so if i pull this clap up right this kick sounds way louder than the than the clap but really the clap is just low right but if i put this clap really high it kind of makes your kick sound weak or it's not hitting hard right but really it's just the level so this is why leveling is important or at least to understand how to do it so i have a rule where it's a 612 rule it's not exact but usually my pillars so my pillars would be my hi-hat clap and my low end um i will put those about 6 db apart from the kick okay so my 808 about 6 db away from the kick um and then my symbols perks and everything else about 12 db away um and sometimes the height it depends on if you max the velocity out on your hi-hat or not um so i'm gonna go ahead and do this so about six db so let's make this about 6 db just to and if it'll just let me okay okay that's about 6 db so somewhere around 12 or is where i want my clap to hit okay and i think that's great so now we can turn these on and do these and for these like higher frequency sounds i like to pan them because they occupy pretty much the same frequency so i'll pin this twice to the to the right and this to the left once um for my hi-hat you could do about 12 db away but i think this hi-hat is a little louder so i might go even further [Music] and to most people that is fine but for me i don't like my hi-hats taking control of my mix or just i like them to just be a rhythm so i would turn mine down lower but i think this is good enough but i'm gonna turn my download because obviously what i just said [Music] okay and then now we can do this and for my symbols and perks i just want them to be felt not really heard um so i don't really have other perks here obviously but you can also follow that 612 rule with this as well um so if you want to you could just do like somewhere around here [Music] all right so that is a way you can do it so now with my 808 again negative six away from the kick give or take all right depends on your preferences so let's go here [Music] right you can turn it up [Music] okay so now the next part would be micro adjustments um and how i do this is i turn my master volume down and then i make a little bit a little bit more adjustments to my levels right and i'll probably do even more [Music] i'll probably turn my kick up a little bit [Music] and i like that so i'm gonna turn it back up [Music] and i still want my 808 to kind of be more felt than heard okay i like that [Music] all right and that is the process of leveling right and you also can put things in a bus um and this is more like eq and stuff um so if you want to put all these in a bus you can highlight them also hold ctrl highlight and then you can route track uh track routing and then go to route selectives track only and then you can go ahead and put eq and boost things [Music] right and that's more of a mixing thing but that's just something you can do um but what i like to do usually and i'm gonna just put these back um i just do my perks like my kind of perks or hi hats into this drum buss and then i would just kind of boost things a little bit just to give them a little bit more shine in the mix [Music] okay so our drums are done and let's go ahead and move on to our instruments all right so now we're going to do the instruments now there are a few things with the instrument i want to talk about so one way to mix it is when you make the melody so i'm gonna play the melody and you see when i made it i gave everything kind of its own place right so there is nothing really clashing technically right but a lot of people when they layer the melodies they just copy the melody over um and then everything is playing at the same exact time which is creating problems right i'm creating muddiness right so i'll play it [Music] you can see a lot of the instruments kind of fade in and then they fade out and then another one comes in and no one goes out right so that's going to help us mix all right so that's one way you can mix before you even get here all right so now what i want to talk about is picking um the instrument you want to be heard the most right so your actual melody right so i think of it like cooking right so you got to pick what you want to eat so if you want to eat steak that is your melody right and everything else is like seasoning would be um the rest of these instruments they're supporting the main melody right so like a pad or like a little bell that pops in right so that's how i go about mixing my instruments all right so like i said just pick a sound that you want to shine the most or like your main melody um but for me i'm picking these two because these are my favorite because this whole melody altogether there's nothing that stands out it's kind of like everything comes together to make the melody so i just picked my favorite ones [Music] alright so in the last video when we made this um pretty much we already leveled it as we made it so we don't have to do too much so i'm not gonna make any crazy adjustments but you can go to extremes to to find out what you don't like to give you a ballpark of where you should be putting it so if i like go here i'll know that's too low right and i'll kind of do that back and forth so i know about right here is where the sweet spot is so maybe round two right very minor adjustment but it'll um pay off later okay so now we'll pan these so i'm not paying this to the left because [Music] it's sounding like it's on the left already so i'm gonna paint it to the left twice my pan is to the right twice and you can even go further if you want okay and i'm not gonna eq right now but usually i'll do like a quick little cut of the low end right and usually at the end what i'll do is put everything in a bus and then just kind of eq everything all together so it doesn't clash with the 808 um but we'll do that later um so now what i'm going to do is we can level our side instruments all right so let's go ahead and mix our side instruments now this is more of a sound selection thing i'm gonna talk about um but picking the right sounds in the beginning can help you later because if i pull this up this is a completely different sound but it'll kind of sound like this one which will make it easier to mix right um [Music] right it kind of it you can't really even tell which one it is right um it just sounds like it's this instrument so that is something that can help um but as far as actually leveling it um we can go ahead and continue here so what i like to do with these is turn the volume down and then i like to mix it until i can hear it so if you have to try to hear it then it's too low so i'm gonna pick try to pick a decent value [Music] right so what i want to do is pull this up until i can hear it without trying to hear it like i'm but i can't there's nothing i can do to not hear right so all right this is way too low so let's maybe double it [Music] that's still too low so i don't even think that's still too low [Music] i even want this a little bit more and i think that it might be good [Music] okay i like that that's i can hit slow but i can still hear it i don't really have to try to to look for it right so same thing with this little pad here we could do that i don't like to pull it up higher right another rule of thumb is if you turn it off and something feels like it's missing then it's pretty much like a good level for it okay um for example just a um extreme example if i turn this piano off it'll sound like something's missing right [Music] right that's an extreme example but it should give that feeling when you turn the sound off so i'm gonna do these now [Music] and i'm gonna pan this to the left because the piano is to the right and these are kind of the same sound right and then now we could do this one [Music] and i think that's good okay now this is a very high pitched sound so it's easier for you to pick up so we don't have to push this too hard we can kind of just leave it on wherever we see fit okay so now we can turn it up [Music] now we will turn this down even more [Music] and this would kind of be the micro adjustment part as for the drums because you see on the drums we did the opposite right um we turned it down well we turned it up right and leveled it and then we turned it down and micro adjusted but here right we we turn it down to level it and then we turn it up to micro adjust so it's a little different same thing but just opposite right [Music] and this is kind of getting overshadowed by everything else what i'm gonna do pull these down a bit and turn this up [Music] alright so that is um the leveling of the instruments so now what we can do is i guess i could show you this bus real quick to put everything in this bus and then what we could do for the eq is we could just turn it down just like this just a slightly you don't want to do too much and then you can kind of mess with this and see what you like to kind of boost the highs just to give it more clarity all right so now that is that so now we can kind of combine everything else together all right so now what we want to do is kind of combine these and level our drums with our instruments now you don't have to touch your drums you just want to level your instruments and this is why we put them in a bus to your 808 so you want to level these around your 808 the reason for that is because your 808 is a little low because we leveled it around our kick so we want we don't want our instruments kind of overpowering the 808 because the 808 is a instrument right technically the bass is an instrument too so we want the bass to shine as well so we don't want our instruments too high all right and then when we master it should sound pretty good when we bring the levels up so i'm gonna level it i'm gonna check the level of the 808 first so let's just say around negative 20 db so we want to stick somewhere around there for our instruments [Music] right [Music] so i'm gonna turn it down and micro adjust now i know it sounds like low and weak right now but that's because everything is low okay so now let's do some micro adjustments [Music] and what i'm listening for right now is if i can hear everything um without trying so i'll just listen to the song i'm looking at each instrument and then i'm looking to see okay can i hear it when it plays i can hear that right and this is probably one of the lowest sounds here right so okay now the mix should be good so next all we need to do is just do some eq in um and mastering it bringing the levels up and i'm gonna pull this back up [Music] all right okay so now we're on to mastering and if you have fl you will get this preset so you can use these um so first thing i like to do is eq so i just eq out a little bit of the base and usually around 38 hertz and that's personal to me because i really like the sub and i found that 30 hertz give me gives me the sub i like but it also gets rid of the muddiness so around 38 hertz is where i'll right click go to order steep 8 and then i kind of like to dip it out a bit okay now you see even that's a little too much um but i'm just doing the extreme so you can see um but i'm gonna just pull it back [Music] right i like that little sub in there okay um so from here you can kind of take out things that you think i think this is pretty clean as is [Music] i don't think anything nothing is standing out to me necessarily [Music] right you probably like okay how do you know what to put simply i'm just putting what i like what frequencies i want to be boosted i like the pump of the kick right here i like that sound a little bit so i want to boost that a little bit that's it okay there's nothing else to it so this i think is good enough right here and i'm gonna move on so now this right here is how you make your images loud in fl okay um this is a personal preset that i made i'm gonna be giving you this but this is what it looks like if you want to know and then what you do is copy it copy an exact version because if you do one it's gonna one side is just gonna play [Music] okay so you want to duplicate it so both sides play [Music] and i can see it sounds a lot loud and it's wider okay so now this is extra this mastering curve this is a newer plug-in nfl um but this is the mastering curve preset okay and you can make adjustments um but i kind of let me see i'll turn it on so you can see the difference it this just gave it a little bit more clarity and you can adjust things [Music] right and you can adjust where you want things to be boosted or whatever and this also gives it a lot more clarity right and then what i would do last since this boosted so much i use my fruity soft clipper okay and i usually put this threshold i do two ticks one two so i do two ticks like this and i put this post gain at 79 okay so basically you just pull it down once one little tick okay and i'll give you this preset so you don't got to worry about all of the um minor things all right and then now your stuff should be around 0 db right and then from here you can adjust things as you want but i think this is good enough so that's gonna be it for this video hopefully this was helpful make sure you like and subscribe if you're new and i'll see you guys in the next one peace [Music] you
