what up guys it's your boy Matt from Ramsey voice calm and I think this is probably going to be my favorite video ever because today we are going to be talking about how to sing in mixed voice mixed voice in case you're not familiar is a singing term that refers to the blend of the chest voice and head voice together to create one long phrase so I like it doesn't matter where I am again ah I can sing through my entire range and you don't hear any vocal breaks or any strain what is this mythical beast to call the mixed voice how do you create it and what are some exercises to do that and those are gonna be the three huge takeaways that you're gonna get from today's lesson we're gonna talk about it and nail down what mixed voice really really is we're going to talk about how most singers get it wrong and I'm also going to give you five fantastic exercises to improve your mixed voice and help you find it today now Before we jump in and get started make sure that you smash that like button voice check out my complete singing course master your voice click the link to get on the waitlist okay let's face it everyone wants to learn how to sing in mixed voice why because mixed voice is the most balanced richest and most powerful and controlled vocal sound that you can get across your entire range to give you an example of what I mean we can display the opposite so if I'm trying to sing like stay with me by Sam Smith oh wow yeah and I just sing in my chest voice right just sing in the bottom part of my voice and I'm just pushing up to those top notes they're gonna be flat and they're gonna be straining or if I disconnect to my falsetto and just use my head voice oh well yeah [Music] I'm gonna have a big old nasty break in my voice in the top part of my voice it's gonna sound really really Flutie and hollow mixed voice however is going to be the blend between the chest voice and head voice to get that beautiful and even sound where you can't tell where I'm switching oh won't you stay like you can't tell exactly where I was switching between my different vocal registers so Before we jump into a little bit more about what mix voice really is I just want to go on record and say that there's nothing wrong with singing with a lot of chest voice there's nothing wrong with it at all it's a very very important and very popular in a very exciting sound but i got another confession to make it just sounds really really cool the problem though is that just singing with chest voice really limits your range how much further can you take that you just can't bring it that far up in your voice unless you've learned to sing with some mixed voice and then you can start to belt into that a little bit better alternatively you can also look at singing with too much head boys sing it with too much head boys can also sound really cool that's a whole head voice it's all falsetto it's all Mickey Mouse and if you haven't seen my video on a head voice versus falsetto you can check that out as well but just know that singing with just falsetto even though it can stand really really cool also lacks some of the richness of singing with a stronger voice so come on Skinny Love just believe era sounds super great when he's singing in that falsetto at the same time you know it is lacking some of that richness and why not have that full richness in your voice and be able to take some of it away if you want to for a vocal effect so instead I would recommend learning to sing with mixed voice first and then you can start to add more chest voice or add more head voice to that as you see fit and like a vocal chef all this talk about mixed voice and what it is and what it isn't can be really really confusing so we're gonna talk about what mixed voice actually is for of all mixed voice is a little bit of a simplification of some different concepts in singing we talk about chest voice or thick vocal cords to create those low strong sounds at the bottom part of my voice we also talk about head voice foreign which are very thin vocal cords creating those really really high notes in my voice and most voice teachers explain mixed voices just simply combining the two together so that all the notes across my range sound even and strong zone and I can make that all sound evenly strong without there being any big breaks in there now for all intents and purposes that's a fine definition but I just want you to understand most vocal science these days actually is saying that at a certain point everybody switches from chest voice to head voice that there is no mixing the two together as much as if you keep the vocal cords closing and vibrating from the bottom to the top of your voice then it all sounds like one even then it doesn't matter whether you switch between chest and head at any point as long as your vocal cords are vibrating together in a really really healthy in a full way then you won't be able to tell where anyone switches so for any of the students out there that are like gosh I've got this vocal break I just need to learn to sing in my mix voice yes you definitely need to learn to sing in your mix voice but what that actually means anatomically in your body is getting the vocal cords to close evenly across all those notes I run oh yeah and that way it all sounds like one even in strong range so you can see that making your mix voice sound really even across your entire range is totally the key to this if everyone switches at some point then the whole idea is just to keep it sounding as even as possible one of my favorite vocal teachers always makes the analogy of saying like if you're driving in a car that's a stick shift down the street you always feel as the driver whenever those gears shift however if you're a person on the outside and you're just watching the car go by you wouldn't necessarily be able to tell when that driver is shifting gears you just see the car in motion and the same thing is true as a singer you may always feel a shift happen in your voice however if nobody in the audience hears it did it really happen now that you understand what mixed voice really is I want to give you my five favorite exercises for helping you find your mixed voice and really really develop it into a strong and reliable part of your voice now there's a lot of great places to start off with this but my absolute favorite and you probably know it too is going to be the octave and a half lip trill the octave and a half scale in case you're not familiar is just covering an octave and a half of range in a 3/4 time like this triples and triplet remove it remove it done good and you can pause the video rewind it as many times as you need to get a hold of that scale but what we're going to do is we're going to do that on a lip trill where you take both of your fingers place them in the middle of your cheeks and flap your lips together ly and what we're gonna do is we're going to flop our lips together on that octave and a half scale so in my voice it would be kind of like this sorry I can't hold my fingers and play at the same time but it would look something like this [Music] and guys as a matter of fact that's exactly where we're gonna get started so go ahead and start with me here now here [Music] now notice that I'm not just pushing my chest voice up to that top note I'm not and flipping and completely disconnecting from that top part of my voice either instead I'm just keeping it really even ladies let's try to do the same thing right here that way all of the notes are sounding evenly and strong so rather than just testing it and having a big break instead I'm just focusing on that uh and everything feels really even and even though you're doing it on a really silly exercise in time you can really easily turn that into the next mixed voice exercise that I want to show you is the octave and a half D and the giegi in case you're not familiar is one of my favorites because the e vowel tends to allow you to go up to your head voice but the G keeps those vocal chords closing remember your mixed voice is coming from an even closure of the vocal cords across your entire range so we're gonna do it on our trusty octave and a half scale so let's start down here with guys right here remember we're not pushing we're not sleeping in a falsetto either it's just give me that hay on each one of those notes and that's going to help my voice stay together awesome job guys let's keep it going this time we're gonna build even a little bit more vocal cord closure into each one of those notes in this particular case we're gonna do it on the octave and a half bratty ney like you're nenene like you're a little bratty kid who sing nee nee nee nee nee in this particular case with guys we're gonna start down here on the B flat 2 again so uh name name name name a name name name name name name name name name name name name name name name name name name name a name name name name ladies let's do the same thing here nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee nee and you'll notice with each one of those I'm just getting that hey kind of a feeling and that's actually helping my vocal cords stay closing from the bottom to the top part and if you do that on a hae then eventually you can do it on a ah excellent job guys at this point we've done it on the lip trill the ghee and the nee let's go ahead and build in even a little bit more power and solidity into those top notes especially if you've still felt like those top notes are flipping a little bit Hey then this exercise will help you so we're just gonna switch that same thing going from an octave and a half but this time rather than going from an A we're gonna do in a now like you're saying nasty so my voice would be like [Music] ladies let's try the same thing right here now you may even hear me switch a tiny bit when I'm demonstrating some of the women's scales and the reason that it's actually able to still switch back and forth without sounding like it's flipping is because I'm keeping a focus on the bratty sound where did I switch it's kind of difficult to tell but to be honest I can still feel it so that's where I feel the switch happen but if I can do it without anybody hearing it it's like it didn't even happen for our last mix voice exercise today I am super excited to show you one of my absolute favorites and again it's gonna be on that same octave and a half scale but this time rather than going for a bratty sound or an e or an ad or something like that that's really helping your vocal chords stay together in this particular case we're actually going to be switching to a different consonant which is going to help the vocal cords stay together you guessed it it's an octave and a half GUG GUG just like you're saying the word gut gut gut but with a G at the end guys we're gonna start right down here so gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gah gah gah gah gah gah gah gah gah gah gah gah be careful that you're not using too much chess Whizzer gah gah gah gah gah gah you still need to allow that top part of your voice in God in order to make that mix voice sound right ladies let's do the same thing here don't start to light gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga gaga one more keep it strong gah gah gah gah gah gah gah gah gah gah gah gah nice job congratulations guys by this point you should be singing with a beautifully strong mixed voice from the bottom to the top part of your voice without any breaks or any strain but don't worry if it's still feeling like a little bit breaky to you always record yourself and listen back to that recording see if you can hear the break in your voice if you can you know that you still have some work to do but if you can't really tell where it is you are on the road to singing with a beautiful mixed voice and I'm super super happy to have shared this with you guys if you found this video helpful make sure to click like comment with the next kind of video that you want to see me do subscribe and turn on
