first they'll probably win this game so Chuck Nelson will kick it off for the Minnesota Vikings John Taylor and Doug DuBose back deep for the 49ers Pat Summerall John Madden at Candlestick Park beautiful day just cool enough very little wind you're gonna find out who's good it's a good day to do it Nelson approaches [Applause] duk-goo bone with some Rome [Applause] but a return of 44 yards five DuBose and Steve Young the quarterback will have a good opportunity the Minnesota Vikings play a front for of duck Martin Henry Thomas keep maillard and Chris Dolman the three linebackers Howard and Solomon on the outside and stud will in the middle secondary Isaac Holton Carly the cornerbacks Brad Edwards starting at safety alone with Joey parameter rats Munoz first down hit right at the line of scrimmage by Jesse Solomon the 49er offense young with Roger Craig and Tom Rothman behind him Jerry Rice and Mike Wilson the wide receivers Ron Heller is the tight end Wallace suppo low Randy crossed the center guy McIntyre next to him in Harris Barton perhaps right now the best of the offensive lineman at right tackle second and eight Mike Wilson's with wide left rice good wide rice covered by quickly bat it down [Applause] he's Maillard with pressure already on you he has been very active a little exchange of abuse well you know the thing about Keith Maillard is probably of the tackles the guys that play inside over the guards and Center he's probably the best pass rusher for there from there in the lake now Reggie white lines up there sometimes but he's also an end but of the pure tackles Keith Pollard is the best Russian and when he gives pressure he gets a quote right now he's on the quarterback right right to throw it up into the pocket and partner from behind by Doug Martin they'll have to find New England well the shocker over the Chicago Bears Doug Flutie threw four touchdown passes and the Patriots beat the Bears 32 seven those of you who watch that surprising result welcome to Candlestick Park in San Francisco nothing nothing the opening series the 49ers forced to punt after a good kickoff return by Chuck DuBose berry Helton's a punt in the direction of Leo Lewis back need for Minnesota [Applause] [Music] Louis will field over his head into the end zone 48 yard punt by Helton Vikings will operate from their own 20 keep in mind what John Madden said about that first series and who scores first being very critical to the outcome of this game Wade Wilson will start at quarterback for Minnesota you'll face a front three Roberts and Fagan the ends Michael Carter one of the best in the Rose tack Ellison Mike Walter back [Applause] Nelson's behind him Wilson Stream pass to Alfred Anderson first play we mark it down Ricky Ellison tripped him up Dave Hamilton assisting Fred Silva who is the referee [Applause] offense pass interference number 83 a year since still first down all against Steve Jordan the tight end Wade Wilson the quarterback Darren Nelson and alfred anderson the running backs although that will change on every play that's the way to get the plays into the game Carter and Hassan Jones the wide receivers and Steve Jordan the tight end Zimmerman McDaniel Chris hoodie or foot and Terry couch camera went up front gaulden pudding [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Charles Hayley made a stop a gain of seven by Nelson who has a lot of friends in attendance today he went to Stanford of course of course I'm at Stanford his head co-chair was Bill Walsh and Bill Walsh remembers two things from that game last year that playoff game where the Vikings really blew him out of the playoffs he remembers Darren Nelson and Anthony Carter Anthony Carter said a playoff records and receptions in that game and Bill Walsh says the two guys we have to stop if we have a chance is Darren Nelson Anthony Carter second down looks like about 12 Gustafson was the man in motion the fourth why yet setup feel to Gustafson the move man Jim Gustafson is one of those guys that everyone says probably shouldn't play you know he wasn't drafted he wasn't anything and and Jerry Burns said he's not big enough he's not fast enough but the guy just has a feeling to get open I remember when they first got him here at Minnesota he played high school football with Bud Grant son but grant was looking for a wide receiver and his son said hey Jim Guster's - you remember him from high school but said you had me brought him in they call him the glass man but now he's their most durable receiving first down Minnesota Rick fini left side stop by Michael Walter picked up three but he got enough for a first down [Music] [Applause] one of the most intense of the linebackers Ricky Ellison those of you who watched Buffalo's shutout Green Bay 28 to nothing welcome to Candlestick Park in the first quarter first at 10 Minnesota tomorrow John Madden Wilson while better than the aired is gonna be picked off by Kim and the 49ers will get it at the Minnesota forty Ricky Ellison got to hand up to knock it away [Applause] when they new Vikings don't run the ball well but they like to play fast that was a play fast and no one went for the faith injured 49er is Charles Haley perhaps their most valuable defensive player in fact we're going to see him he's coming from the outside he's as you say maybe their most valuable player Bill Walsh thinks is one of the best players in the way he was the guy who hit Wade Wilson just as he threw the ball I said it was Ricky Ellison who batted away it was Tina Turner who got the hand on it that's hailey well the good thing that Tina Turner did is not go for the play fake you saw the play base and then instead of going for the fake that they gave to the runner he went back and passed defense and we see their hailey was the pass rusher who hit Wade Wilson just as he threw the ball till Walsh was saying yesterday of hailey he's been banged up nicked up every week but he keeps coming back and playing and playing very well this one well that's hard to say well I think that bill Wallace is thinking right now if there's one defensive player that he can ill afford to lose Charles Haley would probably be the number one guy because if they have a dominant player in their front 7 Charles Haley is that guy Atlanta 27:24 over the Eagles not much time left in that contest the Cardinals and Cowboys tied at 10 apiece Cleveland beating Cincinnati trying to close the gap between those two Jets beat Pittsburgh 24:20 coming from behind Haley still down at Candlestick Park nothing nothing the score Haley is up now and walking but in obvious pain I was holding the the chest area and of course the good news would that would be that he just got the wind knocked out of him the bad news would be a possible rib injury or rib cartilage injury second in the NFL in sacks forty-niners take over just inside the Minnesota 40 first and 10 [Applause] no flag [Applause] 2:27 finally stopped by david Howard but twelve yards for Roger Craig it was funny when we were talking to Bill Walsh yesterday I think it was the first time I've ever heard him say something like this Pat but he said if we're going to win we have to run the ball we have to win it with the run and four years Bill Walsh has always been the guy who would pass first to establish the run and now he's Cohen like everyone else feeling that he has to be able to establish the run and of course he has to do it with that guy right there Roger Craig [Applause] by Chris Dolman a loss of one perhaps there's Charles Haley they're checking the back of his neck he's got one of those neck braces on Browns beat Cincinnati they keep checking the neck and then the arm and the feeling in their right hand one of those things that could have gone from the neck all the way down the right arm one of those stinger things second down a little over ten was cut by Carl Lee Doug Martin put the heat on Steve Young Fayette Doug Martin came on a stunt on that you know the Minnesota Vikings are one of those teams that stunt all the time he starts out as a left in and he comes on a spun that he comes up the middle watch him he's going to start outside they're in the top of the screen now watch him right there he comes to the inside no one blocks him and he's getting a free backside shot at Steve Young all the blockers went with maillard third down come straight back chase by Millar by Joey browner throw a stream pass Maillard put the heat on that was almost disaster for the 49er there sometimes that happens when you try and stay too much within yourself as they say you know where you don't cry get the ball down the field if you're not throwing the ball down the field then it's very difficult to do things like run draw plays and run screen passes they have to come when the defense is scared to death that you're going to throw the ball Soko Fuhrer will try field goal with Steve Young holding from 45 yards out line drive is off to the right no good it was not young holding he had said to us yesterday he probably would in place of Jill Montana but he did not that was Barry Helton the rookie punter that held on that one and it's interesting in the pregame warm-up I saw Steve Young was holding now this is one of the areas that hurts the 49ers when they lose Joe Montana not only do they lose their quarterback but the thing that may not look as big but can be big in a tight game as they lose their holder and Joe Montana was one of the better holders so its first in 10 Minnesota after that to Nelson he got four yards Michael Walter made the stop the report on Charles Haley by the way is that he has a pinched nerve in his neck and it is questionable as to whether we'll see him again today well that's one thing that they're gonna try and get the ice pack on it as you see there get it calm down and then continue to evaluate it [Music] his place has been many of the ball-carrier for the Vikings struggled for a couple no we're talking about earlier that neither one of these teams have great confidence and that's the way they're playing yeah especially on offense they look very very conservative you know the area right now is a sparring session 249 is about the best opportunity to add great field position twice and come up with nothing Jerry Byrne said we're somewhere in the middle of the pack the moment wonder who the elitist attitude [Applause] Wilson a Smithfield Eric right finally flipped him up a flag on the play you know that's where a quarterback that can move a little or scramble a little is a big big plus because it buys time before Wilson moved he had no one open he was looking he had no one opened down there and then by pump faking moving a little then he could find Hassan Jones the flag was unintentional so things stand as they are Anthony Carter wide right [Applause] Wilson rolls right Gibson gross 49er territory out of bounds at about the 43 gain of seven Oh Wade Wilson in the Eagle game hurt his left shoulder dislocated his left shoulder and it was interesting me Minnesota Vikings practiced this past week in Tucson Arizona that's from last night if if any of them play golf you say yeah a lot of guys play golf but I couldn't play he said I can't play with my left shoulder to push when a man can't play golf but he can play on Sunday got his Vikings moving emotion it stays over and out of bounds on his feet a pickup of fourteen Eric right finally got him down right now for an NFL update let's take you back to New York and here's Brent Musburger that with time running set up the touchdown but the Cardinals blew the extra point and that's why they're sitting on a six-point lead right now timeout Dallas they've got the ball Ernie Jones set it up and let's go back to pass the offensive coordinator of the Vikings he calls the plays from the sidelines with the full-back so you're going to see a new fullback in on every flight second and seven two wide receivers [Applause] for Anthony Carter catch but out of the end zone those officials weren't sure down there bad they looked at each other and looked at look and then they finally said no good one gave it and the other one helped him sell it he just couldn't get his left foot down he did drag the right one but not the left one you still have to say that is a great catch and then you remember the rule that one knee equals two feet that sounds like a good name for a book whatever we're just in Canada third and seven you can have a heck of an argument in fact the replay officials are looking at that one again you can have a heck of an argument as to who the best wide receiver in this game is today I think if you started that way I think I would put up Anthony Carter and say take your shots at that one well you certainly have two of the best in this game the Jerry Rice and Anthony Carter conclusive is our information Wilson laughs sit out and he is very near in fact I think he has a first down for Minnesota Ronnie Lott on the tackle a pickup of nine funny thing about the Vikings they don't have a lot of running they haven't had a lot of success running but they use five running band we just saw Alan Rice there he's the past catching guy Alfred Anderson near 46 he's a blocker Rick penny is a blocker and short yardage guy Darren Nelson is the runner the wide the guy who gets outside Alan rice is a pass receiver Anderson wrong run stop by Ricky Ellison gets inside the 49 or 15 no it's a funny thing about this game John you're just talking about the Vikings have five running backs all of them are healthy but in the offensive line almost no one is healthy it's strange how injuries seem to hit you and when they hit you they hit you in the same place in the groups and that's what kills the team when you get hit in that same position I'll tell you early in this game today Pat I think the offensive line at a Viking is doing an excellent job of pass protection against an ordinary well wait Wilson said when you asked him what he had to do the way he said we had to be able to run our play passes and he struggles down to about the nine before Ronnie Lott can drag him down picked up six from nothing Rick funny brings low doesn't it he gets up well he starts up there and guys just bounce often look at those big ol arms and shoulders honestly I mean you hit that thing that's like hitting a fire hydrant the only thing you do is start pulling it through Jersey they they ripped the back right off of had a blowout on the way a jersey like he dressed for Halloween third down and three the Vikings just inside the 49er 10 and a Minnesota timeout those of you who watch the Cardinals defeat Dallas 16 to 10 Helen I just looked at these numbers pretty grim at the 49er nine yard line with 321 left to play in the first quarter those of you who watched Atlanta upset Philadelphia the Falcons get their second win of the year and the Eagle record four and five [Applause] awkward Anderson and he has stopped short of the first down Michael Walter was the first man to hit in this is going to be an interesting call here whether the Vikings are going to go for it on fourth down or kick the field goal they've already made that decision you can see the field goal team is coming in here but when the Vikings score first their record is for no and I think that of course you'd like that first score to be a seven but if not you want to get something on the board although they're going there or they're fine they're going for it rice was a ball carrier in the 49ers hold I hate the second-guess but I really feel that that when scoring first is so important and you get the opportunity you gotta take it so Minnesota comes away dry and it's still nothing nothing how can you not fall in love with something that looks so good back at Candlestick the 49ers whole you know the interesting thing fat here if you look at this defense one two three four five six seven eight nine ten the 49ers held and they only had ten guys out there of course if the bike he's got a first down in his four that becomes a big part of the story Larry with this Larry Roberts is out he has a concussion that's where the Vikings tried to go [Applause] right slides up to thirty forty niners get out of the hole in the hurry Brad Edwards made sure he stayed down Jerry Rice is going to start on the numbers on the left-hand side of the screen it's against his own defense he's going to come all the way across in that layer behind the linebackers and in front of the deep secondary now he has a bad ankle it looks like he was playing to cut and really quick cuts I said to heck whether they just take the slide at the 31 you're crazy hit behind the line of scrimmage first by Keith Maillard the Rams move into a tie for first with New Orleans upset Philadelphia Phoenix peak Dallas dismal year in Dallas who even moves again closer to Cincinnati that's over Pittsburgh Buffalo shutout Green Bay the best start for the pills since the merger Miami beat Santa Bay keep the bear talk about an enthusiastic guy he's enthusiastic at the meetings you know and he's he's so enthusiastic and fired up that sometimes he only goes six or seven plays and they have 275 and after them get him out go second down put him on the sidelines because he starts to hyperventilate he gets up so high but I think he was excited on that play because there was no tight end on his side and no back on his side if you look here here's the large right here he's going to jump but there's no back in behind him on his side that can double-team him so he gets excited when he looks like he has a one-on-one [Applause] almost faded around the corner Joey Brown are knocked him out of bounds and Jerry burns the Minnesota coach would you start talking about Joey browner he just glows I think he feels that Joey browner is not only the best defensive player on his team but maybe the best defensive player in the whole league in fact this is what he said the whole season depended on one open field pack again to anybody's you got put everything on him and flags come flying from everywhere [Applause] Vikings are applauding and that's why number 79 all start third down era Spartan there's sometimes that'll happen just with the different cadence or voice of a quarterback era Spartan second-year guy and most of his playing of course has been with Joe Montana and then you just get a different guy's voice in there and it'll make you jump sometimes [Applause] down at 6:00 now overthrows his tight end [Applause] not controlling [Applause] well the 49ers are using two tight ends bill wall said yesterday that I think we have to take some of the risk off the quarterback and put it on the receiver I mean keeping more blockers in and fewer receivers going out and taking your chances with that type of massive game Kelvin in the back department Yolo asleep for Minnesota not a good luis at his own 29 puts the Vikings up at about the 37 36 yard kick an 8 yard return so they met only 28 nothing nothing 1st quarter four seconds remain first quarter let's watch this last pass protection Steve Wallace against Chris Coleman right there look they both have each other's face mask at the end Wallace's helmet almost goes off you have to do everything did you get a guy like Chris Dole anywhere you [Music] Hassam Jones pickup of eight over on the sidelines that's Charles Haley he was taking his equipment off now he has a pinched nerve in his neck and it didn't it wouldn't appear that he's gonna be back and of course he's the guy that that is second in the NFL as we see there with nine and a half sacks he's the guy the 49ers were we're counting on really to put the heat on Wade Wilson today voiced by number one fat fat choice Darrin Nelson try to trap it up the middle gain of one short of the first down stubs on the stop that's the end of the first quarter with the score Minnesota death San Francisco nothing back at Candlestick Park and some are all John Madden nothing nothing between the Vikings and the 49ers we met in the playoffs last year the Vikings overwhelmed San Francisco [Applause] mr. quarterback straight ahead for no gain little stub stopped it excuse me I was just gonna say you weren't gonna go straight ahead and get any gain on this thing well you have triste foot who weighs 255 pounds then he has the plot Anthony Carter I mean he has to block Michael Carter right there see on that one Tarrytown she's trying to come down but Carter just knocks everyone up I mean the offense the off guard is trying to pull pouch is coming down McDaniels coming across foots going back Michael Carter takes all three of them and just pushes him in the backfield and fouls up the whole thing it looks like a bowling alley John Taylor ready to feel the strippers left-footed point which is a dandy all the way back to the six yard line [Music] Gretchen roughened I think came up with the recovery was a good return was a good pun John Kahler does make an excellent returner he makes some nice moves makes it bacon to the outside cuts back to the end inside runs through some things but look as he starts to spin the ball starts to get out in his left and then he never really got it back cinched up against his body again it started out in that twirl and then he couldn't get it back in there Sam anal is the man who made the hit that knocked the ball loose but you're right he never after that spin he ever regain possession of the ball [Applause] Anderson for the two backs Rainn Wilson Eric right was the cover man and they are saying pass interference against number 21 [Applause] that's a pretty tough call you see what happened here he got Eric right when he gave him a doubt nut move and then as the ball was thrown short Carter had a weight with 21 right grant Israel bat-ball hadn't been under it would not have been pass interference yeah but it could have been a touchdown put it in I mean had he thrown it to that second cone it probably would have been a touchdown because he had a beaten threat on the out and up penalty of 26 yards against San Francisco and its first gold Bennion rice I think it's going to be tough to run those running backs inside with Mike Kulkarni the the inside of that Viking line with Chris Witten Terry - they're just not strong enough to stop Carter's penetration just watch the line of scrimmage watch the red jersey come through at the bottom right there 95 that's harder and he gives two or three yards in their back field I would if they're gonna get something open probably up [Applause] Carter is one very [Applause] thanks and score the fake just froze the 49ers long enough with that type of thing there would go back and let the quarterback run with the ball but I think they've like he's had to get someone out to the outside that's the thing that Wade Wilson gives you you know maybe Tommy Cramer over the years has been a better pure passer but in today's football with the defense's and the pressure and the blitzes you need a guy like Wade Wilson who can move around and throw or it could move around and run one in for you you either have to be mobile or you had to be hurry up get rid of it quick is good [Applause] remember score first 26th after the first half they lead seven epic Nelson to kick it off to the 49ers John Taylor and duck DuBose back deep for San Francisco short kick flag on the play it's Taylor [Applause] about 226 hit by Rick Finney the Vikings I'm sure we're offside based on where the flag is and I would think that they'll probably have him kick it over I know that's the way I would do it with Chuck Nelson because one thing about Chuck Nelson he doesn't get a lot of depth on his kick he's not a strong legged kicker I don't know if the 49ers are going to do but with a ball on the 22 I would sure have him go back five and kick again left side that's what they're gonna do we kick let's watch what happened you know a quarterback can get things with his feet but he can also get things with his arms or hands and you want Wade Wilson on this he comes into play fake now he's going to start to move out to his left you see he fakes here but watch which gets him as he starts out here he gives that pump fake like he's gonna throw here now that takes Jeff fuller fuller sees this boom he runs here Wilson can run here so you can do it quickness with feet or you can do it with that pump now watch when he pumps air much fuller start coming back here see and he's coming back here to cover and then Wade Wilson can run right around bill walls was full of full of praise for this young man yesterday Wade Wilson that a great army said he's one of the best in the league you know I think he feels like a lot of people field is really an underrated guy I mean he's up there in Minnesota in a quarterback controversy but it seems like when he plays the Vikings do well Nelson [Applause] quarterback Joe Montana not even dressed you're not even in uniform he's dressed the helps young is only one out of five [Applause] on offense and three it out preyus alone [Applause] picks up seven Isaac Hope made the tackle well the 49ers offense needs a lift and I I think the guy they have to get it from is either Roger Craig or Jerry Rice you know they have Steve Young coming in here not a lot of confidence not a lot of playing time the second game who started this year and I don't think you can put it all on his shoulders I think one of these experienced veterans has to take check it down [Applause] Brent Jones the backup tight end stop by Jesse Solomon or no game the 49ers are using two tight ends now they have Ron Heller on one side Brent Jones on the other side again I think part of that is for past protection they want to get as many protectors in there as they can but you have to throw the ball deeper than one yard you can quarterback sneak and flop on the ground and give one yard still wind up putting Charles Haley getting back in harness [Applause] by Henry Thomas one thing Dolman is upset because he knows Ben's what he has to do when you play Steve Young you have to contain him and you have to know that he's probably gonna run and when he run does run he's got a run to his left so the outside guy the end on that side has to keep him inside of him golden got up to steal quickly but young was able to get outside of him but not to get a first down Leo Lewis back teeth or Minnesota very helping [Applause] - about the 24 so with 11 22 remaining the first half at Candlestick Park its Minnesota 7 San Francisco nothing Pat Summerall and John Madden we're at Candlestick Park in San Francisco sold out on a beautiful afternoon to summarize what's happened so far san francisco fumble the pump return the vikings took advantage of it it's a good chicken laughter emilie vote [Applause] doesn't say for what the vowels in there Wilson on a partial rollout has to come down with it and complete - Alfred Anderson Bob snugger is John Madden said sins in the offensive plays with his fullback that's Bob right there next e mate of mine the offensive coordinator sending in Rick Finney with the next play choice now what he does basically he'll come in and tell Wade Wilson to play then Wade Wilson has to quit the formation and any motion with it so he learns all the play and he doesn't give him the whole thing great Wilson puts back together once the full-back gives from the play when the Vikings were created back in the early 60s and they were able to draft players from the existing teams one of the players they took in that expansion draft was Bob Snoopy was their first tight in who would have thought this many years later he would be their offensive coordinator and call into plays although kinda looks like a kite he's not as big now [Applause] himself in great shape Wilson out of the shotgun struggles outside the 37 yard pickup stop by Greg Cox Ronnie Lott you know and that one led the Vikings are in four wide receivers here's four wide receivers this is their passing formation now what the the 49ers counted was six defensive backs three here to take care of those two and three here to take care of these two so they end up three on two against the four wide receivers third and four is Anderson is the lone setback and healed of all the him when he is wrapped up by Tina Turner on third down and Minnesota will have to punt well the 49ers against that four wide receivers they go six defensive back they only keep one linebacker iniya and that's Tina Turner and he's the guy who's the best cover guy the linebackers and also a very very good open field pack so if you're going to only keep one of them in Tina Turner's are pretty good guys to keep in there when he's helping and they figured that out John Taylor the reason he jumps on that run like that is he has to cover that guy in the past funky stripper that block was in front of him knocked out of bounds by the kicker Bucky Scribner but remember a penalty marker down on the play and it's in the area where it would probably be against the 49ers but it's not it's against the Vikings usually when you get it in that area it's for going downfield before the ball is punted it's against the 49ers now Phil romanovski got a great block to set up that return by Taylor there's back on the run back number 53 holding ten yards here first down well they got a good block Romanowski did I don't know how the flag could be way down there if he if he holding was that late that's certainly not a hole that was the good block the holding had a tensile a good block way earlier yeah it had to but it had to take place weighed down by the kicking team too [Applause] I don't understand [Applause] no one asked you number there's the block and there's certainly nothing wrong with that that's that's a hall-of-fame block I mean that's that's the one you put in your highlight film for special teams but the area that the fat that block took place [Applause] where the the flag was thrown he's got to be wondering too 9:34 left first half seven [Applause] first and 10 San Francisco at their own 17 yard line intended for Jerry Rice incomplete let's go back and look at that penalty again here's the thing fat it was on the line of scrimmage here's Romanowski right here and you'll see him make the hole now the thing is if he holds before the ball is kicked then then that would still be the Vikings ball if he holds after the balls kick then it's on the return we now the interesting thing official has to call with that penalty give the Vikings the first down I think that hold was before during and after watch it break from behind [Applause] [Music] you say this is the guy packed it just stays fired up keeping the wired and what he does is he fires up the the entire group around him you see that I mean he kind of provides the energy in that huddle for that whole bunch attack he's sort of a neighbor of yours isn't he well he is he played high school football with my son he's down here from Pleasanton yeah I mean it's about a about a 3-wood from here where he lived they flip flop him from left side to right side his password [Applause] Vikings feared the running of Steve Young as he would expect but they said that can't make us timid we got to go after him anyway he picked up 6c now here's the water here as he said what he has to do is go here and flush him out and then the end guys the outside guys have to make the play but watch him he's going to come right over guy McIntyre he saved both bow he gets that whole thing collapsing and then he makes Steve Young run now the next guy has to be there the end the linebacker the spy someone has to help the inside guys flush them out the outside guys make the tackle Mary held the thought of the day coming up [Applause] the way by Harry sippy incidentally if something happened with the one of the backup quarterbacks today from San Francisco absolutely perfect day San Francisco very on the cool side next Sunday hope it stays the same Dallas visits the Giants buccaneers before [Applause] at Washington [Applause] ronnie Lott was the defender helped out by Jeff fuller I think all receivers in the National Football League probably know Ronnie lot better than they know anyone else but they all talk about words like fear where we talk to Anthony Carter he said I don't know about the corners but I know one guy who's feared in this league and that's Ronnie Lott anytime you run an inn or a plant or a post you look for number 42 when you play the 49ers feared and respected I think Oh [Applause] sidearms to George's stop by fuller a gain of six bring up a third down and four here comes Leo Lewis see what the 49ers do to counteract that yeah the Giallorossi Gustafson coming in there Jim custard an end Leo Lewis so that will give Minnesota four wide receivers and now the the 49ers will go with six defensive backs we'll be number 29 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the shotgun was the defender Luis Luis has driven beaten by a staff that could have been more interference I think than the one they call that Eric right because Griffin was on Luis while the ball was in the air before it gotten there bucky Scribner averaging 46 yards of punch today and again John Taylor he's had a couple of good returns that ended in disaster wanted by penalty and the other by a fumble not as good as the other [Applause] 43 yards on that diamond the Rams on for field goals beat New Orleans yes beat the Steelers for the first time ever at Giants Stadium [Applause] Bill's shutout Green Bay 28 to nothing the sastras date for the Packers Doug Flutie six out of 18 for a hundred and sixty five yards and four touchdowns one of eighty yards [Applause] the Dolphins week Scot Studwell and Jesse Solomon there was a new formation there for the 49ers they had John Taylor or we integrate on those kick returns was in the backfield but him they had a full house backfield on that and play and they put John Taylor in motion as a lead blocker watch him here see they get they got through two running backs here and here's here's John Taylor there he starts out the middle like the full-back valley the defense has to cover him with a corner then he goes in motion and leads on the sweet play five young girl chase [Applause] again that pressure you said that he stepped up from came from Keith Maillard I think we're seeing two pretty good play from inside guys Carter on one side Maillard on the other side watch Maillard right here again he's on McIntyre over there McIntyre pulls out Krauss has to block back on him he just runs right by Randy Krauss now that's what Maillard says he's going to try and do just penetrate get in the backfield if the guy stays here he said I'd get a sack if he doesn't I'll flush him out where he can't do what he wants to do 35 picked up only a yard Thomas number 97 I think Henry Thomas is in there we see Henry Thomas he's right there no one blocks him what this Center fires out he just completely misses them Randy Cross says Henry Thomas just stands and said come on come on come on in here the end of that play you want to run that stuff on third down you'll be put in the next down every time each maillard said last night we asked you about Henry Thomas he's just said he's a rock Elton Rock the Lewis [Applause] got it back to about the 16 when it's a clip against the mic does that happen right in front of Luis and the official and and everyone we had a blimp the blimp would have seen that one a good day for a planet nice blimp day yeah return number 15 illegal block in the back above the waist at the distance first down first down Minnesota you're gonna see number fifties rate Barry this is shot right there wait so right between two fives he didn't even knock him off the tackle foot Louis into the sandwich [Applause] shut up [Applause] stayed on his feet momentarily we're at Candlestick Park in San Francisco and some are all John Madden they're crucial match between the San Francisco 49ers who trail the Minnesota Vikings seven to nothing at the moment four and a half minutes left in the first half he from the lard was telling us last night that he had to get thirty four tickets to this game and he could have used a lot more well 34 is good in fact in fact because he got 34 they made him captain for today's game Maillard and Deron Nelson or the cap they're the most tickets Wilson go back to Nelson stumbles close to a first down before he stopped by Ricky Ellison here's the way it looks in the NFC West the Rams beat New Orleans today and tied them for first place San Francisco with a win today could be improved their record to six and three and be only a game behind Atlantic Force one today breaking a five-game losing streak but it is crucial San Francisco is going to win today they better get some offense going than they made this first half offensively for the [Applause] Wilson gets it that you 30 Carter [Applause] Jeff fuller on the stop a gain of 13 a Viking first down heck of a shot watch Jim McCloud 22 he's gonna try and bump Carter right here it's a double zone you see Carter has that quickness he gets beyond them right there and in front of the safety and then fuller finally gets there and they hit that slant in that double zone the corner rotates up the safety comes over once he gets beyond the corner he has the gap between there and the safety first and ten [Applause] and complete the NFC central condition after the Bears lost today the New England and Doug Flutie Minnesota can moved to within a game improve their record to six and three the bears now seven and two [Applause] and the rest pretty much out of it far as playoffs are concerned gary burns there is no fool around with Hannah who tells you the way things are which is great [Applause] sherry it's not always what you want to hear but it sure exactly thanks Paula truth by Haley and Larry Roberts watch Haley on that pad play on that play pad he looks like he can hardly lift his arm you watch him he and Roberts are both coming from this left side see Haley's 94 there Roberts is in the inside they run a stunt they both get there about the same time but as Haley got up he looked like he could hardly even lift that arm well they both were hurt earlier in the game Haley with a pinched nerve in his neck Roberts they thought with a concussion but they're both back there's an important game stunt Roberts went to the outside third and 16 Stream pass not loose by the court recovered if it was a complete bath a lot made to hit and you just saw I hit there by Ronnie Wadkins there aren't many other safeties in the way except this guy could make [Applause] bündchen ear he's coming out here is drawing a screen fast watch 42 lot come in he hits his shoulder right on the ball here's hope made the recovery West Charles Haley here he's just playing with one arm he can't use that left arm at all when you can't protect yourself against the block it's really tough to play in this way Roger Craig [Applause] to break John [Applause] we'll get the two-minute warning this is what the 49ers have had to do in their quarterback situation this past week with Montana down second down gives to Rathlin second and shorten stop by Maillard again no gain the large just got down in the stands that time and just butted heads right there with Jesse Sapolu what's this one in the pitch you're going to see it happen right here watch these guys you bop boom right here clap come running into it there's not much there is it if you don't get that defensive line going back a little you're not going to get any creases inside they're gonna measure Bill Walsh distress disappointed about the lack of a passing game for the 49ers that used to be their forte but it evaporated that's what he said we said well why he said well we started running that's one reason he said Joe Montana hasn't been a hundred percent he's not playing today Jerry Rice has been limited he has an ankle injury and then he said then the other guys just aren't getting open then you add that that Steve Young is playing today and he's a little rusty third is shorty the 49ers only have two first down tab third ninja [Applause] has the first down [Applause] break up for maillard on a stop [Applause] defense number seventy-five five yard thanks man you're a writer was maillard on the spot but they called him for a face mask on to stop I do here he plays down into the polo again he's getting a double-team and they're gonna run off of that double-team so Maillard is gonna be coming back into the picture right there don't know that he had to face mask he looked like he had the right eye gouge the right eye and had the top of the helmet you get a better hole with the face man and on the right eye down 49ers young back to throw fight though Wallace the speed rusher this young man was saying earlier and that's exactly what that was I was a speed rush watch it here's dolmen here here's Wallace toboggan dolmen just takes this angle right here and Sprint's right by him you see he gets a little wider just wrap up the field gets his hands keeps his feet going that's a big thing and look what he finds at the end of it timeout 49ers field he looked a little Kennedy I think at that time did he tried to make the cut and instead of having to plant that ankle maybe make a twist he just pulled both feet out of the ground and said heck with I'm not gonna hurt it right here but I don't think they've gone back to him since that play Minnesota call this timeout the Vikings have one left the 49ers have two left Fair and at halftime he's gonna have to explain what happened to it I know that's gonna come up hey Dick Butkus what happened to the Bears look it's a full credit yeah he gets full name the factors the Bears lose another one like that he's going to get a middle name 30 yard field goal attempt [Applause] Shelton was holding again not young the 49ers put some points on the board and with a half minute left 31 seconds left the Vikings lead San Francisco 7 to 3 not much manufactured by either team on offense I know that Bill Walsh is his thinking that that he would like to stay close and then somewhere in the third or fourth quarter go after the big play and like I said before I think as he looks down that sheet that's that big play I would believe has to involve Jerry Rice we were talking last night how he gets that play sheet he starts where he has his first 25 scripted he said when he coached with the Bengals and Paul Brown he used to call the plays and Paul Brown would ask him for what he called openers he'd say what do you got for openers so he'd give him the first two or three play then he said it went from three to four and then to six and then to eight and then he said by the time he got to Stanford he got up to 25 plays and he would strip and he said he's just been doing it ever since him seven plays 22 yards they went 49ers kept in a minute the half gopher kicked the 30-yard field goal Darren Nelson back at the goal line the bike gets to the 30 regret next week as the NFL starts the beginning of the stretch Dallas goes to New York Rams Philadelphia they and Chicago Detroit Minnesota Green Bay against Atlanta those are the early one starts with the NFL today at 12:30 John Madden and I will be back east for the Saints of the Redskins in rocking RFK San Francisco plays Phoenix the Cardinals all of a sudden of five and four and in the thick of the NFC's Eastern Division race got the bus all warm that we'll be trekking over highway 80 all the way we had a lot of time to read sweet look at tapes all those things look at America you're out what happened what's going to happen and the Vikings just run it out and both teams head to the locker room that's the end of the first half with the score Minnesota 7 San Francisco we get set to start the third quarter Cofer to kickoff Aaron Nelson back deep in the Center for Minnesota [Applause] Nelson will field it at the 4 yard line [Applause] halation at about the 25 22 yard return yeah we were talking about the big play bad and I think you know it's obvious who the big play guys are on this team if there's going to be a big play in this happening from the Vikings it has to come from Anthony Carter from the 49ers I think it has to come from Jerry Rice with a little extra sauce from Raja tre obviously Steve Wade Wilson [Applause] first half my son Jones and steps away from a couple stays on my seat knocked out of bounds at the 30 Michael Carter here's Wade Wilson's first half throwing by distance under 10 yards she's 9 for 11 so you see others passes 11 of them have been less than 2 at 10 yards than one for two between 10 and 2004 to 20 to 30 Oh 400 30 to 40 and over 1 over 40 silver most of his passes have been in that 10 yard box 10 yards down the field for the line of scrimmage you can almost put those in that running category second and six Jones again left side this time got two yards break up a third and four which is a good point that when you have that short passing and running then the defense can play it that way that when you're bunching up all your play the defense can bunch up on you and it's tough to get something going I think somewhere both of these teams just have to air it out once in a while to stretch that defense make them think P button you got Anthony Carter out of there let those guys worry about him give him a reason to worry about Vikings this time go with four wide receivers but far to the left or worse that was Gustafson emotions he makes the catch second time net play has been successfully regret made the stop on Gustafson picked up ten that was interesting Pat like you say here's three wide receivers here here's Gustafson here he's going to come in motion start up here and come right across here Wade Wilson just gets him for the first down you see three now that puts the defense out there the deep guy has to run with Gustafson so he can come underneath them and have enough yards to pick up the first some of that room was created by the fact that the 49ers sent Ronnie Lott on of wits [Applause] going on first this time the jordan short of the 50 stop by Tina Turner that's the other thing I think the Vikings will probably do more of the second half is get the ball to their tight end Steve Jordan secret burns and saying last nighti Jordan's nicked up he's got a bad shoulder he's wearing a knee brace he had been healthy is about 85% but heck he's okay he went through this whole line of thinking were wrong with him at the end he said he's okay he said every time he goes out for a pass he catches it looks like a mid-air collision [Applause] and on each side there [Applause] loss of one Michael Walter made the first hit Nelson bounced off him you know that's one advantage both of these teams have what's Ronnie Awad he's right here he's kind of half defensive back and half linebackers because if you pass he can get back but if you run watch him he's can can can clap he's right up there to make the tackle and he's a very short tackle and he brings a pretty big punch with him too ways to can buddy [Applause] down [Applause] poor Gustafson again Wilson missed him badly I don't think he saw Ronnie a lot in there until the last minute and maybe he had to put a drop on that thing looks like you had frying tar on it that was the six defensive backs they had four wide receivers and ronnie Lott just played free in the middle I don't think Wilson saw him until he started throwing just one point tailor bhakti for Bucky Scribner Hunt Labour's come off we close to breaking one here mesmerist have you sure have sit down the ball went over his head and it's gonna die inside the five Joey browner down to down it and the 49ers will start deep in their own territory after that 49 yard punt by Scribner [Applause] pretty easier time you talk about a coach you know that Wyoming coach is Paul wrote he used to coach with me with the Oakland Raiders 15 there was too old to coach he's found you oh yeah Roger break over the right side Henry Thomas and Keith Maillard two yards just to just to remind you of what John man has been talking about rice particularly there's season average total yardage that's the entire game of course it's 243 yards today in the first half combined they only got 62 second and eight [Applause] a little bit out of the hole stop by Brad Edwards picked up seven about a yard short of a first down [Applause] where they throw it well if you look one thing was Steve Young he's a left-handed thrower so most of his passes are to the left those are the deep one third he's grown one for three in the middle deep Oh for one to the outside Oh four to the left and then inside two for three and the inside one for two and the other inside and nothing outside so he throws mostly to the middle and to his left throws very little to his right thanks throws outside [Applause] been a lot of slippin I rats one just then and by Edwards a moment ago in this part of the field that's where they soldered the baseball diamond and in addition to grass it's got a lot of sand underneath it's interesting Pat that the 49er offense hasn't done much today's game they just got the first down they got a standing ovation for these four hitters looking for anything to yell about [Music] [Applause] and again some slippin and slidin but a gain of 13 see that usually on the finger you're gonna see some water flying out of there and now you just cease and watch Mike Wilson he's gonna catch this pass in here on Carl Lee i watch as he starts to run you see that dust flying out of there they fill in that at infield in the grass and they put dirt over to keep everything down I guess and quite taking this yet I think that Otto hose it down make some mud out there Solomon [Applause] there's one thing I'm sure the Vikings know now with young at quarterback most of the stuff that he does is going to be left if he runs he's going to run left if he play passes he's going to play pass left and boast of his throwing will also be left because in that area on the right side he hasn't thrown any passes yet today [Music] 2:35 7:3 [Music] roll [Applause] pickup of 60 there you Steve Young zip that one in there but just he's going to hit Wilson again to his left on a slant three-step drop in whack right in there again that's that double coverage and he's going to hit him inside the corner before the safety gets over there I think God that when they're taking more advantage of the safety Brad Edwards rookie than they are the corner Carl Lake to the Minnesota 45 before he is stopped by to Newton gain of three Newton looks almost skinny well he's a lot skinnier you know he was well up over 300 pounds I mean he he tiptoes Toledo's till they slanted the other side and now he's down to like 260 265 270 they say well maybe not skinny that maybe well he's less heavy right second down [Applause] [Applause] by Jessie Solomon youngest in the field now and part of the thing that's helping him get the fields right here the pass protection I think in the first half the biking defense was getting more penetration now the 49er line looks like they have things figured out and they're getting Steve Young a pretty good wall to throw in front of bill Walt no not suited first and ten 49ers on the move by Maillard and Dolan Dolan first the things that Steve Young was so excited about Joe Montana not dressing was the fact that he knew that he was going to play the whole game and he said you know that's a totally different feeling when you're a quarterback and you get to quarterback an entire 60 minute so because when you've come in or you only play a 40 you play a half and play a series here and there you have no time to get any rhythm and maybe that's what happened maybe took them two first half to get a rhythm because whatever it is has a little of it started right now it's back to tray [Applause] Joey browner and Henry Thomas has come back in he had suffered minor groin pull Detroit surprising the Giants still seven three and Seattle over San Diego third quarter both Steve Young wanted to get that play right past that time after that run he ran over to the sideline and talked to Phil Walsh himself it's been signaled to plays and of course and I they said he wanted to check that [Music] [Applause] Rises out [Applause] and Edwards finally tripped him up Jerry Rice they don't miss them if Bill Wolf's was saying that he would like to play this Terry Grier more he says he was a great player in Canada and he said I think that he may be a great player here said but our passing game hasn't done anything and I haven't been able to play him enough ok once down here what 74 here go against Chris Coleman that's Wallace and there's some waxers yes that's down San Francisco forty-niners totaled just 73 yards on offense that drive took them 97 yards they work something out well that was an instinct Drive [Applause] that's one thing the 40-man is you know they have that script the first 25 plays that's basically the first ab then they revise him adjusted and come out with a second half Cofer the kicker Gregg will go over the top and San Francisco takes the lead ten seven damar that summer all of John Madden San Francisco tan Minnesota seven Roger praying this for the touchdown but the thing that put the glue together to create that drive was the improved performance of Steve Young in the first half he was four out of 11 from 40 yards in the second half and that drive five out of six Darren Nelson bhakti take it away from him whoops maybe stop after return of nineteen by Darren Nelson Minnesota takes takes over [Applause] the word on Jerry Rice outstanding all-pro receipt [Applause] you'll be back not yet he's taught one pass Wayne Wilson [Applause] v Minnesota back picked up only to Kevin Fagan attack you know I think one thing that that in this game if it's going to be one it's going to be won by the past I don't think this is going to be a running game and it just looks like both teams kind that wasted their time so far running the ball I think somewhere they have to start getting the ball up the field the 49ers did it the second half I think they were maybe too conservative maybe just trying to keep the ball in the ground and not doing anything they opened up just a little and I think the Vikings are going to have to follow suit Minnesota second and eight Wilson operates from the shotgun formation gets it outside 2d take those ears and sprinkles for a first down picked up nine stop by Eric right you had one thing the Vikings and Bob smelter who calls the plays in will probably have to do a little more passing on first down because they're not having a lot of success on that nickel package when they're going they're four wide receivers against the six defensive backs or the 49er michael walter number 99 who's had a really outstanding season or San Francisco is the shakin of 49er he's probably one of the most underrated players in this league also and I think that on a three-man line that inside linebacker there's two inside guys are probably all underrated because they don't rush the passer they usually come out on passing down and they're probably of all the players the NFL the least known those inside linebackers on the three-man line team you have to play in there a long time got any sort of notoriety like Harry Carson [Applause] scientists set up the screen finally does and it's just as well Alfred Anderson the intended receiver 49ers had it diagnosed born NFL update let's take you to bridge bus burger in New York all right Patton John here's a couple of updates for you now the Giants have taken the lead on Detroit Joe Morris on a one yard slant ten seven and the Bears have lost more than the game to the Patriots Jim McMahon out at least four weeks and a possible torn the ligament maybe longer back to patent shine what Jim McMahon just can't seem to stay healthy for the whole team [Applause] Wilson was under heavy pressure from the 49er rush ends up a third and tenth this is an area that the Vikings are having trouble because they were going for wide receivers and the 49ers with counter was six defensive backs sometimes a lot sometimes not now looks like the vices of time more protection only going wide receivers keeping to facts on either Wade Wilson stepped up into the pocket he's off he gets a block and he could really be off flag is down a flag is down as Leo Lewis threw a block and a flag came down I don't know that there's anything wrong with that blonde I didn't see anything wrong with that one let's look at it again okay see a block by Leo Luis the Vikings are celebrating I don't think they're going to call it against the Vikings will see Fred Silva the referee and out of conference with the rest of the officials but it looked like I saw the block and I know you did too it looked okay to me there he is he's right there at the bottom of the screen 87 now the only thing his head is in front everything's in front it wasn't a blonde for all the way there's no penalty [Applause] and rightly so well they rightly should because Leo Lewis was in front of him and he initiated the block above the waist and this guy here who we get talking about the block and all this but this guy there is a dangerous guy I mean the minute you think oh they're not get the ball to Anthony Carter where's he why don't they do it boom he hits you a 67 yards we asked him last night Howard his legs they looked okay he said they're not getting any bigger he has the skinniest legs in the NFL he sent him a double extra-large scut suit and he got lost in it he gave it to his back with Gary Zimmerman bunch of ears this is where he's dangerous he's dangerous deport coming across that middle on a crossing pattern and they did that I guess San Francisco's six defensive backs 14 10 if I can please [Applause] Minnesota scoring drive five plays 78 yards they kept it only a minute 40 67 yard touchdown pass Wade Wilson Anthony Carter and so Minnesota recaptures the lead 1410 Nelson to kick it off Taylor and DuBose another short kick [Applause] 2:27 let's watch that cuts down again pat and we'll say there was really Ronnie lots man here's Carter he's going to go across the corner bumps in here now LOD has to take him and Carter with his feet just outruns lot right here and gets the touchdown for watch him you see they're going to get a bump and a switch off up on top you see right there now here comes Carter right up there underneath you see a lot coming for him Carter runs right by lot in fact he runs right by two of them and look how much he beats him by then he gets the block by Lewis and the touchdown that's what speeds will do to the open field 26 yarns [Applause] to be a 49er touchdown they strike right back three yards client first half things have gotten rather raucous but you know that right side was a client side that's only the second time that he's rude to the right side there's John Taylor out there and you see what happens he started in Isaac old just went in with him then you seen Brad Edwards number 27 he doesn't get across and right now John Baylor knows he has a touchdown [Applause] has replaced John Harris 49ers at 2:17 left there 2:17 left third quarter 49ers 17 Vikings 14-7 three at the half 49ers have scored twice the Vikings once in the third quarter Bofur set to kick it off Darren Nelson again deep for Minnesota [Music] [Applause] Nelson good return out to the 34 swedgin touchdown again Steve Young again in second time he threw to his right I think maybe the defense over there fell asleep you see he pumps to the left now watch what happens here it's a double zone now here's the short guy coming in this way here's the deep guy Brad Edwards who has to get across here's Taylor the guy who was going to score the touchdown I don't think these guys thought he was going to throw the ball back to look at home Edwards loses that race - touchdown [Music] Minnesota [Music] Tom Jones moves into 49er territory picked up 25 yards we're getting the ball game here that that first test we had like a sparring match like they they got that clock setback thing foul up then wake up didn't get here didn't think the game started until the second half took some oxygen or something one of those intervening sugars or some Dosher and finning down the running back [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in motion we'll see you back to throw it gets it across the gosh I'm Jones again Ricky Ellison tipped him up but he got five bring wide receivers from everywhere now Hasan Jones came in motion that time came across the backfield then he starts in between the tackle and a tight end then comes back to where he originally started but five passes now for 62 ER [Applause] out for the least for weeks [Applause] [Music] by Ricky Ellison [Applause] Cardinal record is now five and for the Giants have gone ahead of Detroit that one's still underway in the fourth quarter Seattle leaves San Diego their battle to stay alive and the race for the AFC Western Championship the other thing that could have happened here is maybe both these offenses wall these defenses to sleep and pull them maybe so we just kiddin look at us [Applause] Rick fini thunders down inside the 4925 picked up four or stopped again by Ricky Ellison you're right he does thunder he looks like a nose tackle in the body of a fullback okay looks like a linebacker it looks like [Applause] he is a competitor he stays ready that's the end of the third quarter with the score San Francisco 17 Minnesota 14 and we now pause for word from your local tie 1988 Motor Trend import car of the year the Vikings are up and ready second down [Applause] Wilson kept it got enough yards for a first down flag on the play however he faked a dosier just kept going that was the old bootleg you know they call that naked bootleg get both packs going one way quarterback going the other way without blockers number 81 illegal motion five yards Anthony Carter illegally in motion so they'll bring it back no first down second and 11 now from a 29 that was a big play I think that one thing to tie the game here the Vikings really have to get the ball at bottom to the 20-yard line Nelson outside the 40 that [Applause] Dehlia looked like Carter's slipped on that one watch retire he's 22 Anthony Carter's 81 watch as he goes to make the cut from the outside to go back inside he slipped but tyre was just playing back there the ball of course was thrown over Clara's head because he slept and Makai er was right there for the interception so the 49ers with Minnesota driving come up with a big play the interception by Makai er they take over at their own 18 yard line I think that penalty was a big play too because the Vikings lost that five yards and they had to go farther up the field to try and gain it back and then Carter slips and Makai gives the interception so you start with that penalty and that's a big thing looks like they're doing an instant replay on this thing the only thing I can think of it's whether Makai er catches the ball or the ball hits the ground lunch number 22 as he comes in there I don't know it looked like the other 49er was right in front of it and they're still reviewing if it did hit the ground Makai er did a good job yeah this is what I don't understand why they get closer to the screen to look at it remember as a kid that always say get away from the television screen you'll go blind I never heard that I think that bounced Royal cat garden is the reefs of replay official then you think it bounced that last time I don't know anyone look again yeah I'd like to look at that one again so what they I think the first time and what life you had it but that last time it looked like 49er fans were booing here well he did a good acting job if he didn't intercept it if it did hit the ground he did a good job of rolling and disguising Gary burns are saying your coach you coach all your life trying here to blow up enlarge if you would the video that we have [Applause] they reverse this someone might blow up the official they won't reverse it place stands his call we're all safe inconclusive the information that we get and the 49ers takes of all three birds just saying I codes all my life and latency law specifically server by a guy by inconclusive break bundles Joey Brenner finally is knocked out of bounds and Minnesota gets it right back they say he has the strongest hands of anyone on this team no he's in addition to a football player he's an expert and things like kung fu and karate and all those things and things you need strong hands for but I know the Vikings are thinking now that you shouldn't have had the interception probably that replay wasn't right and we'll show you this is what happened there goes the fumble there goes browner no one touches him except his own guy so you still get up now once he gets up you gotta tackle now you can't touch him anymore for the Anderson and deke [Applause] it's down inside the 49er 20 stopped by Ronnie Lott after a pickup of four make it second and six at the 17 like this guy Rick penny here he he comes in every other play because he's bringing into plays but I mean he's a bull you know he's a football player kind of pullback you don't do a little blocking do a little short yardage running do a little of that go inside work help your line in that tape again hope for a little contact [Applause] four flags at Candlestick it sounds like it could be a park or something [Applause] against San Francisco 91 defense encroachment five yards got some good words intro foot conclusive and stuff like that yeah remember it used to be you know like old defensive guards and to be all died yeah yeah water buckets some grass and stuff in the water [Applause] second down is looking for contact that he found it in the end zone with grass no there was just something when the guy walked in there and I said yeah I can too like this guy was a football player you could tell he had a look on his eye I don't know what it is but I mean it's something that's just strange when you see a guy come in and you think hey this guy is ready to do something maybe it's a block maybe it's just run inside here but when this guy gets things going upfield okay he knows where that endzone is he is 6 1 to 32 no one even bounced awesome just the one got close enough to touch him so the Vikings are back on top again 22:17 trying to make it [Applause] Nelson does make it 21:17 so now the Vikings again are atop the school board by four 1333 left to play 14 Minnesota points young of San Francisco the left-handed starter today in the second half has completed six out of seven for 152 yards and a touchdown but the Vikings just recaptured the lead on a touchdown run by affinis it was an interesting thing because the Vikings gave the turnover then they got the turnover back then watch what happened in this play Ronnie Lott is here he's going to step up now they get caught in a stunt the defensive end starts in here now they pack him in there he doesn't get back outside so penny just has a free run to the bank but they get lot inside pack this thing in because they catch them in a spun and run right off the stunt watch the guy in the top of the screen come in with lot now stop it now now they pack that whole thing in here Lotte can't catch them and they get to touchdown Taylor and DuBose back deep six just outside the 20 by the Viking coverage led by Lyman Henderson in the fourth quarter Detroit and the Lions trailing the Giants by three leaders beating Kansas City by ten 21:17 here Pat Summerall of John Madden at Candlestick Park rear comes wide right Roger cray nothing doing Keith Millar tripped him up [Applause] that's something now that the 49ers have both their backup wide receivers in there John Taylor and Terry Grier Jerry Rice as the injury Mike Wilson wasn't in there on that play so we're saying that they need a big play to win they got some in this second half but now they're in a position where they still need them and they don't have their big play guy in the game second and 10 [Applause] they juggle the exchange Brad phonetic got the ball back with the exchange between cross and young was mishandled to begin with it looks like it looks like he kept both of his hands in there and he he fumbles it well before he gets out of there brings up third and long where Phil Walsh's 49ers third and 12 that'll drive a coach right [Applause] jump back to throw chase out of there by Millar pump fake gets away from everybody [Applause] close to a first down Joey browner's finally knocked him out of an Maillard got loose early forty-niners have to tie tend to see because they want to have extra protection so they're keeping their tight ends in the block young starts out on a bootleg stops right in the middle of the throw now you talk about a guy that's a competitor watch at the end of this run here most quarterbacks would slide or just run straight out of bounds he's looking for that first down marker and taking a last dive for it and they're gonna measure that dive might have gotten the official chains are on the other side of the field [Applause] it's like they need about four inches answer that big they need about two inches what's that dive where where he really extends to try and get that Joey browner was the guy who saved it Steve Young runs back to help him get the spot and young looking over the sidelines for help with what your loss would like to do free rejoins the huddle go for it I think he was saying hurry up and I would I would bet in this situation with a quarterback like Steve Young but this has to be a quarterback sneak almost have to think down the way Keith Maillard and those inside guys have been getting penetration all day Maillard is out for arrest at the moment it is the 49ers win this one football is going to be a game of lunges but Steve's coming lunges to almost get a first down and Krait comes right back in the next play doesn't have it yet doesn't have it until he gets it at the end now you don't mark it where that hand goes it's where the ball is when the knee goes down that's why he didn't get away beyond [Applause] thank you sir Oh [Applause] see Solomon Luna stop the parade got six yards nevertheless helped out Tommy Dreamer he had been the starter Wilson was out with a separated shoulder not seen any action today second and four for Steve Young and that 49er offensive unit you know one thing Steve Young is he doesn't have a lot of experience running this 49er offense but he is a top competitor I mean the guy just loves to come to season anything he does and office to Craig and again they stop if T's maillard is directing his officiating decision it's against San Francisco and it is I don't think they got the ball off in time offense false start number 61 five yards still second down Jesse Sapolu that's why Keith Millar do it he's the guy that's lined up in there over the guard there was his guy to move he's trying to get away from the Lord he could point say [Applause] Bullington comes into [Applause] going down Jesse Solomon Baker with the heat on Steve Young I think Steve Young was trying to run out of there and Al Baker had him by the ankles well watch the bcourses they get in right at the end seven coming from the outside there was a penalty on that last play but watch Baker 77 right there he's going to grab the ankles there and he can't go any farther automatic first down a panel it's Carly I believe [Applause] and that brings the 49ers an automatic first down 10 minutes 12 seconds remaining San Francisco Minnesota leading 2117 [Applause] great hell are on the move chased by Baker all Baker 11-year veteran let's watch who he was trying to throw - he's trying to throw - Terry Grier here 83 but he slipped punches he starts to come back to make that cut he slips and falls down and that's why Steve Young had to make that pump because he saw it he was going to throw it to Grier he sees him go down boom he takes that pump and then of course the next thing he takes is a sack so it brings up second and 14 Minnesota has three sacks and just going one second down [Music] pass intended for Craig bounced off him and for an NFL update what's happening in the NFL let's go to Brent bus / here in New York but packed with five minutes remaining the Lions have tied the New York Giants Eddie Murray 37-yard field goal ten all right now and again five minutes to go let's go back to Pat Brent 9 minutes 27 seconds left candlestick third and 14 Minnesota leading 21 17 Harry Greer wide left Mike Wilson wide right [Applause] way that's what happens when you lose 40 or 50 pounds you can make a play like Newton made there couple years ago they call him the icebox he went to made this play in newton is number 96 he gets flushed their first by Baker then Newton really makes a good play there I think the whistle blew you can see the referee Fred Silva's waving his arm so when Newton hit him the ball was dead then was a referee blew the whistle Mary Hilton to punt for the 49ers Leo Lewis back deep from Minnesota Louis Katz signal makes it 31-yard john madden seven minutes two seconds remain Minnesota and San Francisco with all three timeouts remaining Vikings lead by four points quickly [Applause] [Music] but in there I was just saying but he's been on the bench now he's gotten up and he's gotten right next to bill wall and he put his helmet on so it's that same right ankle that he had hurt before and I don't know if he thinks he can play or not but the 49ers again are gonna have to get a big play and with a Jerry Rice out it's tough and Taylor just shaken up on that last play and replaced by Greer and Steve Young takes a timeout see if we can figure out what happened the sea is here after he catches the ball looks like he's okay until there and then he just I don't know what he did it must have landed on his shoulder or arm I don't think anything happened to him on me on the hitter the catch I think it was anything he could have just just pulled something as he's making a move but but you know the the 49ers come into the game they don't have John Frank they're starting tight in the big play guys of course are Roger Craig and Jerry Rice then they lose Jerry Rice so the next guy has to be John Taylor and now he's out so they need four points they need a touchdown but they're kind of out of big play guys well Jerry Burns one of the things he said is we have to take Roger Craig out of the game of the Jerry Rice out of the game for all purposes they've done both [Applause] and a pickup of 16 stopped by Carly there's funny you think it was going to be the guy who's going to be a guy come up with a play and probably the least likely is the backup tight end Brent Jones in John Frank were here he would be the third tight end but he's a guy he's the guy that they go to that gets the first down break comes out Rathlin comes in Taylor still sitting on the bench riced along the sidelines and the wide receivers were Wilson and Greer [Applause] should be called we have Sigrid here the forty-niners only have two wide receivers they're going to tight ends two wide receivers and I'll tell you that's pretty good coverage [Applause] Carly is right there and I don't think that he did anything that interferes with that pass on that last play Keith Maillard was injured he just went off the field that's a big loss there's a Viking speed pressure now second of ten for the 49ers and officer Roger was the first man to get the paws on him Scott Studwell looking down for loss of - there's Maillard al Baker's come up with a couple big plays here you know he's basically what you hear she they're in and under they got the nose tackle guy over the guard guy over here so they have three on to Al Baker gets the penetration outside and knocks Craig down there you see that's an under defense where you shift your line to the open side away from the tight end the end man to the line of scrimmage is Baker they don't get him block so you can't get outside third and 12 [Applause] intended for Greer Greer kept going you thought he was going to stop and they'll have to punt again I think I'm that Drive Pat is kind of what we've talked about it halftime is the running game is the thing that knits and holds things together when you don't make any yards running then you get in those long pass yardage thing then they put in their pass rushers everyone just tees off and the quarterback and it is really tough at that time throw the ball Alton's kick Louis [Applause] and about the 17 by harried city doubleheader next week here on CBS the Cowboys off to their worst start since 1963 there's a giant stadium the Rams go to Philadelphia Tampa Bay is at Soldier Field in Chicago Detroit plays Minnesota Green Bay Atlanta it begins with the NFL today and John Madden after that long trek across he and I will be a RFK Stadium in the nation's capital [Applause] side to the 20 picked up four Larry Roberts made the stop and help from Michael Walter we talked about the big play guys at the 49ers have lost on offense they've also lost maybe their biggest play guy on defense Charles Haley so the 49ers are are kind of a team that that is really having a tough year being five and three here but but the injuries big play guys that really hurt him less than 3 min or less than 4 minutes now [Applause] wagon as of daniel stump who made to play he's replaced hailing we also to that said that's an old naked bootleg thing where the quarterback is going to fake the run to the right put the ball on his hip bootleg out there with no blockers out in front of them what you hope is it Stubbs will watch both backs go away to chase those backs from behind and you go around it Stubbs didn't go for anything spilling a wish you gotta be careful here [Music] a pickup of three is going to be holding according to him against Minnesota do you take that or decline it I would decline it because at this time I would want the ball back there under 20 I'm going to have good field position anyway I think you were saying if you're wade wilson you have to watch out here I think Bob smoker was thinking the same thing you were calling the place for the Vikings you got the lead you're playing on the road don't force anything here 31 holding decline fourth down with Bob snow they didn't force it he went for the sweep of course he didn't make anything but at least he gets the bundle when your defense is playing well your offense doesn't have to force first long strippers Griffen this time back who forgets all about fair catch [Applause] pretty good ryoga's they said in the same 35-yard punt 5 Scribner they need a touchdown the 49ers he doesn't [Applause] I think what they need is they have to think sometimes you get impatient but they have two timeouts left three minutes 14 seconds so time is not important here and I think in this situation you think in terms of first downs not pressing for a touchdown and you hope somewhere you can get that guy Jerry Rice in this but you lighting like to have him back 100 percent which is obviously not slides at the 48 this dolmen with the pressure on young from the outside and by the way is back in the game Scot Studwell is a guy who tackled young just before he went definitely you could tell [Applause] ready to put a hammer on him if the large says he's a different guy now that he used to be since he's a father ask him how long is that going to last he's been applied of course for nine months those young [Applause] we cover me an and now there distant points the officials are saying it might have been incomplete [Applause] a lotta instant replay time here [Applause] instant replay some good action here with Karl ladies all over Mike Wilson he caught that [Applause] 28 seconds to 28 running the clock back to 228 that's Fred Silva the referee he he lives right down the road here in San Jose good to see Fred back he had the heart attack he had open-heart surgery a year ago see them back here and Little League and active again looking good bouncing around always reviewing things to the clock wearing glasses I like that these things for years the officials never wore glasses face blowers think all these guys are over 50 you'd go anyplace else half of them were wearing glasses why don't officially they are still reviewing that catch I'm gonna referee B laughter the bat happy to be back I don't know what they're reviewing here and they can't review whether Polly was holding or not he catches the ball oh it did slide out there at the end I still think he caught it though [Applause] and they're still reviewing that could be the difference it's going to be third down for the 49ers so what we're talking about here is it going to be third and three or is it going to be third about eight plays reverse completed pass [Applause] it wasn't reverse has completed past [Applause] and now they start the clock third and two rice back in the contest but that's the thing that rice is trying to do it looks like he's been trying to warm up trying to get into contests the receiver cover down they've got a linebacker on it [Applause] touchdown well he told us yesterday he was ready but I'm not sure he was ready for that he made a heck of a run but okay we're talking about big plays and Jerry Rice they put rice in there you'd think as a receiver but he made a heck he made the last blog that's from Steve Young on that great run or the extra point [Applause] run by stevia that was a run he was going to he had a stop then throw and get action is Joey Brown or one of the best tackler Xin lei he misses him there's Carly he misses him once they get some block there he gets another block there what's rice he just peel Jesse Solomon here ad raivo fee young attacker that's the plot that got Steve Young here a 49-yard touchdown run [Applause] five yards stagger joined us expecting 60 minutes the CBS coverage of the Nashville back summer all along we're here in San Francisco the score is before before Vikings 21 the time remaini is 58 seconds 60 minutes we'll follow it losing of the game and rice is just waiting there there wait there then he's going to get up feel to see where he can help don't anyone make a stupid block no one does we'll get you there's one last guy Jesse Solomon has a chance I'll peel them off any one thing about that run fad he made some pretty good tacklers miss he sure did we make joey browner miss then at the end again the guy that that Jerry Rice block jesse solomon is also a good open field tackle spectacular second half to Steve Young after chick will be handled by the Minnesota seven [Applause] a 19-yard Manit of 51 seconds remain 49ers with a three-point lead now Wilson asked Anika Hassan Joan [Music] 18-yard pass completion Viking timeout they have to level now it's interesting how the 49ers lost their Blake big play guys but we're talking about Jerry Rice was out couldn't play they bring him in he gets a block Charles Haley was out there defensive big play now he's bad what is a congressman from Texas doing in the middle of the Afghan war he says he's sticking it to the Russian how's he doing man tonight on CBS give me the rest of the lineup in a moment Wilson Michael Carter put the heat on Wilson forced him I think it's against the right tackle Tim Irwin looks like he was holding right in front of the referee just before Wade Wilson broke out holding offense number 76 10-yard show first down it is Tim Erwin he's at the top of the picture you see him right here in front of Wade Wilson right there now you see these holding there he's in pretty good shape here but see now Wilson starts to run to his right the defender starts to go off and it looks like that's where Aaron Brabham [Applause] 24 thirty-four some straight back this time gets to midfield Eric Wright struggling finally got him down with an assist from Ronnie Lott you got all these high-powered guys if the Vikings we're to go on to win this game they'd probably give the game ball to Rick penny there is the kicker Chuck Nelson or if they get close enough put this contest into overtime within 40 yards second and five second sack of the day for San Francisco [Applause] spagett he's right here he's just going to come right the rush on the backside again is coming to the backside of Wade Wilson he starts up to the outside gets Zimmerman go and then goes back inside him Gary Zimmerman and tackle looked like as as Fagan gave him that left arm he just slipped like he was on ice and then Fagan was able to come up underneath 153 seconds remaining Minnesota uses this [Applause] we'll be third and 13 that was a big shot - Kevin Vegas this telecast is presented by authority of a national football and has intended for the private use of Arianna any rebroadcast I really used to this telecast without the express written consent at the San Francisco 49ers and the National Football League is prohibited revenge they think back to that playoff disaster last year against leacy Minnesota Viking 14:49 or history it took him a long Wilson right Daniel stubs put the heat on fourth this is a no punch situation here obviously they have to go for it this is a tough one when you when you have more than 10 yards to go take that last sack was it very good coverage in Astra one point second half for the 49ers [Applause] with rice the antenna receipt [Applause] [Music] diners will take over you wonder here on fourth down I believe wait Wilson has to throw it you think could he have run the ball and got the first down I don't think so I didn't in that situation he had a throwing Homer was right there and made a great play thank you back to New York well Pat it is over and in overtime the Giants have beaten the Lions the Lions fumbled after receiving the kickoff on the first play from scrimmage McFadden nails the field goal 1310 he kicked it on third down back to Patton JA so the Giants improved their record to six and three Redskins play tonight the Giants have one ugly a couple weeks to grow [Applause] breathtaking run nine yards by Steve Young
