Millie And Sallie May Reunite! Helluva Boss Short Review

this isn't how I expected hell boss to come back but I'll take it hello hell boss fans to another wonderful dish of us debating how much this counts as a Millie episode I'm joking but seriously I've seen people terrified this is all we're going to get which honestly at this point that would be so funny but I doubt it it's coming don't worry but besides Hell's Bells is a fun little romp about Millie sister Sally by my merch make coming up from rra to spend the day with her sister giv is a fun little side adventure of seen the girls just hang out vent and hint at bigger things to come later down the road though I'm not sure everyone fully noticed what exactly is going on here so in the interest of fun and talking about a fan favorite extra let's break down Hell's Bells and what's possibly coming at us later down the road let's tear this town to shreds G for those who somehow didn't get the memo hell of a boss is doing shorts now the wait has been long and while we don't have the next release date yet even if only for a little while never mind prediction Theory video coming soon you to help make things just a little bit more bearable spindle hores decided to start making many episodes of drop between the main ones giving the crew a chance to tell stories about characters that would otherwise never see the light of day as a Sally May was going to show up you have to make the whole thing about her which might not jeal with whatever overarching plan they have for the season and sadly she doesn't really factor into the whole stoet situation so instead we got her in a short and I'm loving this gay fucking H these shorts are honestly a wonderful idea as it kind of highlights the power of Indie animation where it would be a struggle to convince a studio to give more money to make shorts like this as when everything is thought up in terms of streaming and subscriptions it'd be a hard sell that people would sign up just for a 5 minute special but for Indy and on YouTube this is kind of the perfect home for this format as fans are obsessed it's a nice appetizer for a phantom already used to waiting like good little Subs I love the idea and I'm very curious to see what other shorts we'll be getting later down the road and as personally hell boss has enough of Moxy Blitz and stellis content so unless it's weird gooy shit like stas trying to figure out how to work out a laundry mat I think I'd almost prefer that these shorts mainly stick to Side characters or weird parents we wouldn't normally get to see interact like just imagine what happened if Octavia and Stella shared a conversation that'd be wild well let me know down below what shorts you would like to see what pairings you think would make a good pitch as a little vignettes like this anything can happen and I love that and I honestly want to hear all of y'all's pitches but on to the actual short hell's B is a delight though I do think that opening joke is kind of dumb Ms over here also for those who just are probably noticing that I'm sounding a little bit off right now I moved into a new place and I'm sick so if you want an excuse for what's going on take your [Music] pick now talk about the different parts I liked plus the one or two NS I have like I always do I really and you got to say this one first love the dynamic between Millie and Sally Sally doesn't say anything nearly as iconic as she did in her intro episode when it comes to the sisters just hanging out in Pride watching mil nearly spontaneously combust at the idea of seeing her sister again while Sally is trying to play off her excitement just a little bit only for us to crash right into Sally questioning the big city scams that she runs into the clothes then she hits her stride and starts having actual fun with the girls being a joy to watch just tear things up they're playing at the arcade they're playing as sexy Jason they destroy it and honestly good P wo and that shit and fuck him then after that they just go and dance at a club they fuck up a creep getting reward for hundreds of dollars worth of Damages with free drinks by a bartender who definitely wasn't looking these two though are just a delight they truly feel like sisters and while we don't get as much convo as I think I would love and that banter is like what I think really clicks for me seeing them just hang out together is really good the Montage scene very perfect when it comes to showing them having a good time and Sally getting one over by Millie's day plan it's doing everything it needs to they're sisters and they have never been stronger than right here I particularly love this one moment as it feels a little bit meta where Sally goes wait Blitz and the rest won't be cramping Millie's style which feels like a fun acknowledge of just how little we see of Millie flying solo that's also a nice little line that you can look back on retro actly and realize oh yeah Sally was feeling overshadowed by Millie's new life and her new friends now this is some character work that I like it gives us a greater insight into million Sally's past how they both helped run things and took up the line share of the work at the farm with Sally May apparently having to shoulder that burden alone after Millie left which is a neat little scle to a character that before we just we knew she killed people and gave her sister shit that is kind of all we knew about her so the fact that we get to see that yeah she loves her sister she loves hang out with her but is still a little bit peeed out it feels like Millie has chosen this new life over her and their Hometown so while a fun day Sally feeling a little bit insecure about her current Place aka the back burner of Millie's life you can see why yeah that would annoy her just a little bit with Millie recognizing yeah I could kind of do better as her only visiting for a work thing does feel a little bit backhanded in hindsight but Tex you can still see that this is mainly a Sally problem as Millie has apparently been asking her a lot to come visit her in Pride with Sally using the same excuse that things are too busy down the farm she doesn't really want to go she keeps playing it off when really this is more of a question of Sally feeling out of place in Millie's New Life which funny enough Sally using the excuse of she's too busy is the same excuse that Millie also used with the both of them realizing that they can make more of an effort or that Sally can let others help her around the farm as her brothers are older now they can share that burden so she doesn't have to keep throwing herself into work or making more for herself by bearing bodies around the property this is all interesting stuff though this is where we talk a little bit about where the execution could have been better as this short is hell of a boss's writing formula in miniature so all the same issues are very much here as these shorts they don't have enough padding to cushion some of these tone shifts I've basically been running the place solo reminded me of how we used to be like this damn near every day before you left now I personally think it's fine they get away with it enough I just think that for Sally May as a character we don't really know that much about them so having her Goof Off with her sister then this hard pivot into angst it hits this area where I'm down with what it's doing I just don't have enough time to really process everything that's being told to me in the amount of time they're giving we have Sally go from simmering to blowing up to Mad to sad and it happens in like 40 seconds and by the time it ends I'm still in the first 15 where Sally is saying she feels out of place in Millie's new life I think this can work in the time frame that it has I just think it needed to better plant Sally's insecurities about her relationship with Millie earlier we have stuff that makes sense in a hindsight I don't think it's quite saw enough of a setup for how rapidly we get to the reveal and the conclusion personally if I were to have my pitch I would say just cut the Millie joke at the beginning take that 20 seconds having said be from Sally's perspective have her pull a Moxy and be thumbing through Millie's Instagram in the shiny new life she's living and just have a quick look of her being a little bit sad that would plant the idea then we get to have the payoff of Sally having bigger issues and feeling out of place in the big city as if you have that idea running through your mind it makes everything click a lot more on your first viewing and not just like oh in hindsight when you're rewatching the episode I don't think they need to do it exactly like that I do think we need just set up just a little bit clearer and have that climax hit all the harder without sacrificing any of the Midway Fun Also let's be real the Phantom is full of drama whes I am one and we would have completely eaten this shit up just got to teed up just a little bit more but overall again I do like the new insights into Sally Millie's relationship Sally on her own as a character was something I thought was just fun her previous lines were all bangers all three of them piss would you be if I bet on him dying it was very cool to get that trans representation to hell and have it be told to us via World building as yeah she is trans and you only really know that if you clock the difference between the male versus female imp horns as the males have white stripes in them while females are typically solid black this is a cool little detail and it's a neat way of signaling a character status as a trans character without having to ever stop and just say it if you know you know and that's all they really need to do so given how popular Sally became I'm glad we have more of a chance to get more of that Spotlight which is where I think we're get the best bang for our buck for these shorts as these things are the espresso to hell of a boss's coffee they took the same formula condens it down to its limit and if you're into that shit nothing's going to hit harder sisters go from fighting to forgiveness than fighting for fun with Sweet Moments of them hang out watching TV while being moderately maimed meanwhile Moxy has the grace to just let his wife enjoy her time with her sister and not get in the way which could be sign of him taking the lesson from unhappy campers to heart to let his wife do her own thing and to not feel the need to make everything about him this short was solid could touch things up here and there but overall I liked it the audio mixing is a little rough though so this is like the one thing that I'm actually throwing side eye at some stuff could be set more effectively but miss opportunities my opinion all the other bullshit but the audio mixing here is a bit sloppier than anything else in this series and for those who don't know audio mixing or the wrong way I'm using first of the volume of the character speak the background music the sound effects and just generally making it all blend together and have it feel natural to the scene that it's in making it feel like an open space rather than the closet it was recorded in that's audio mixing but issue with this mini is less the vocals for the characters and just more how everything else is kind of too loud like I first noticed this early on but most of the sound effects feel like they were just placed in the timeline they weren't just turned down whatsoever almost every effect is as loud if not louder than the character's talking so whenever One Drops it feels just a little bit too aggressive even in scenes where it would make more sense for them to be quieter as they are at a distance or maybe just add a slight Echo as they are on the top of a building all these things feel like they're being played instead directly into your ear so they feel abrupt when usually hell of a boss no stranger to sound effects typically have these whole things just Blended a little bit better and are firmly in the background enhancing whatever visual thing they're doing at the moment personally I think that given the fact that this was meant to Premiere during a convention they probably suffer from more of a Time Crush than they're used to so they didn't really have enough time to polish up everything about this short okay this just hit me as I was editing this whole episode may have just been mixed purely for conventure hul it was played in they might not have decide okay we just put this on YouTube rather than just like remixing something which okay that makes a whole lot more sense as even besides the sound effects feeling a little bit rough the background music is also just a touch too loud as well like I get wanting a nice track to enhance a scene but every time Sally spoke a little bit quietly I had to turn on the subtitles just to be sure I was hearing her properly none of these things are deal breakers it doesn't take away too much for my enjoyment I want to give this short the benefit of the doubt that it was just hit by time crunch for a con I feel like oh there's a go low effort on these shorts which I don't think is the case as all of season 2 of Al boss has just gotten really good at quality control so this just being a little bit more off than usual just it caught my attention but things will probably be cleaner in the future overall I'm loving the idea of creating these shorts ton of great things can be done with them Hells Bells just a solid testing round for what could be a very fun tradition mainstream anime projects could normally just struggle to to do consistently some minor hiccups some little things that I think could have been tweaked to make it better but that's every episode of Hell boss there's always something but overall it's usually solid most of the time also the bigger things I allude to down the road the thing that I think people really need to look out for as clearly this is so deeply connected to the idea of these shorts and if you haven't noticed oh you poor things well let me explain to you it's the pins baby merch as far as the I can see new Sally May costumes new playmat standies you want more episodes buy that shit no other reason buy before they are out support independent creators just get all the stuff get all the shorts they were going to advertise the shit out of all their merch you have to go buy it right now oh sorry I just had to but for real they're going to make so much money off of all this stuff
