all right and that is my time to head out and take it away all right it's time for good old Mike Tyson's punch-out wit zallard one take it away hey everyone this is all one and I got my friend here clades for commentary today how we doing yeah I am ready 100k yeah the demo doesn't have any audio that's why it's all good it's all good okay all right three two one go all right I'm gonna be doing the majority of commentary cuz punch-out is an extremely execution heavy game and requires a lot of focus out of zallard so the first thing to note is that timer is going for you watching the stream don't pay too much attention to that um Mike Tyson's punch-out is is speed run clocked with the actual in-game timer because there's a lot of random aspects that can impact the the actual clock in real-time so let's get down to basic mechanics of MTP oh and what is how it's gonna be doing throughout these fights um some important terms that get used a lot the biggest one is buffering the buffering of inputs basically buffering is is ways to give zallard setups for certain windows of type frame tricks to hit it allows him to manipulate things in certain situations and you're gonna have him doing a lot of things where he'll be holding a button in contrast with another button to have attacks basically linked once once an attack ends and then the other important thing is you're going to be seeing a lot of guard manipulation basically Mike Tyson's punch-out plays a lot like old cheetah fighting games where the CPU will actually read the inputs on your controller to get a feel for trying to do if you're holding up on your controller most opponents are naturally going to raise their gloves and attempt to guard their face if you're not holding up they will naturally guard low um so there's gonna be a lot of instances where zallard is for example throwing a jab like at the upper right hand punch and at the same time manipulating up or down on the control pad to get the guard to go the way he wants these first couple fights class Joe and Vaughn Kaiser are pretty straightforward there's some minor buffer inputs um Vaughn Kaiser has a lot of very consistent setups to get stars and get easy knockdown so these kind of get off and running and now we're gonna get into some interesting stuff with piston one coming up here yeah there was a little bit of guard manipulation on Vaughn Kaiser but it was pretty minor and you only really saw it in the first and second phases you know there's a whole bunch of inputs in this game that you don't actually see I'm using the d-pad frequently even just during normal punches yeah um so one thing you're gonna see now is piston honda is um susceptible to a specific mechanic in Mike Tyson's punch-out that the major players max damage uppercuts um as you can see when Sally gets a star it goes up on the the Hut up there the star allows a little Mac to throw his is iconic uppercut where he jumps and slams the fist into the opponent with all his fury there's an interesting aspect about the uppercut is is that um even when it hits it can actually do lower damage than it's capable of if the opponent is starting to raise their guard or if it is able to basically block their face in any way the punch will still hit but they'll do less damage so zaliens gonna be doing a lot of guard manipulation to keep the opponent in this case piston honda busy so that when that uppercut hits it does the maximum amount of damage and though it speeds up the fight significantly so I opted for a slightly safer strategy I set up a max damage uppercut in Phase three by keeping his guard up from phase two whenever a boxer gets up from a knockdown and they get up on one they get full health but they also go down one-star so like their health part just completely drains yep so you'll see that frequently throughout this run yeah there's a lot of um MTP Oh is incredibly random and it gets more random as the fights go on but zallard and and sinister1 and the other big punch-out players have spent years finding ways to basically not only manipulate the fights into giving them preferential patterns of preferential ways to get in damage but knowing what to do when they don't get optimal patterns um Don one here is going to be our first instance of a frame perfect trick and those of you who are not aware of what frame perfect is punch-out like most games of the NES era runs at 60 frames per second so a frame perfect trick is something that has to be done in 1/60 of a second so there it is this dodge into the hit that star is frame perfect it only can be given to Little Mac if he punches on an exact frame but what Sylar did is you saw him do a double dodge to the left there after convincing dawn to throw his uppercut um that's a buffer technique zallard is actually basically setting up the dodges so that they per day end always on the frame that allows him to buffer that jab and he'll get the star every single time so it is a frame perfect trick but that buffer basically takes away a lot of the strict time in and allows it to become a consistent strategy you can use in every run yeah so in between in between when his uppercut is going off and when he becomes idle there's a that one frame window that's that's what's key this fight SuperDuper random welcome to the first gatekeeper of Mike Tyson's punch-out King Hippo very infamous you can only damage hippo by getting him to throw his slam punch there when he opens his mouth and the ideal way to finish this fight isn't three cycles you want him to open his mouth three times if you punch him as early as possible when he opens his mouth you'll be able to get in nine it's in that full three cycle but hippo opening his mouth is a 3/8 chance every time he throws a punch and as you can see he did not want to cooperate I did three cycle him you know that is pretty tough execution you have to hit him extremely early immediately as he opens otherwise you're gonna get eight hits instead of nine you need that ninth one on every single one so good execution bad luck yeah one of those fights where salary did nothing wrong execution-wise just there are a lot of boxers an MDP oh that don't care how good you are at the game they can still just eat up the clock yeah so hippo is notably the first major reset point when you're doing single segment attempts event EPO ideally you want to have something in the 40 to 45 range but some 50 is usually still good enough to continue a run great Tiger here is a pretty straightforward fight you're gonna see more guard manipulations and basic ways to get stars great tiger takes a lot of damage from star punches and from here we're gonna have it a very specific form of buffering right now zallard is holding the start button the start button is the input for the the uppercut he's holding it it's going to go off on the first possible frame when he's able to take action again because that's how punch out buffers inputs if a boxer is knocked down and you hold a button that button will come out the very first frame that that Mack is able to act when the the action restarts so to speak so now that kind of buffer is very simple you could literally learn that today by seeing if you can hold down a button with your thumb if you can't congratulations you've mastered a form of buffering the buffers get much more complex and stuff as we go on here through the major circuits in the world circuit so bull one here is um a kind of a complex right this first phase is really straightforward so I was just gonna alternate getting star punches and immediately buffering the star the uppercut right afterwards to get a 17 second knockdown that's just a rhythm thing until the very last punch therefore the actual knockdown he has to do a slight delay to get the setup for he wants for the second phase the important part about these phases going forward is whether or not ball ball is gonna start throwing his rolling jabs where he kind of rolls his hands over one another before he punches it little Matt I was really lucky I actually messed up that delayed hit there there's a random chance that I could have not gotten that third star that third star lets me deal a lot more damage yes there's an interesting mechanic in Mike Tyson's punch-out when you have three stars stocked which is the most uppercut punches you can have stocked you actually get very nice fight by the way that's a really good oh I got the rolling jab pattern which is 25% likely in the final phase and the good refill which is also 25% likely yep at the same time yeah so that's an excellent ball goal one time yeah but when when little Mac has all three stars stocked he hasn't used any of the star punches yet on the opponents actually cannot dodge so it's a weird kind of hidden mechanic that's not not meant to be known to the player but it changes how the how the boxers react to what zallard is doing so that knowledge allows him to set up that final phase and as he said he got a rare pattern and a rare refilled sum when the boxers get up from a knockdown they have specific criteria as to how much health they will regain for example if a boxer gets up on a one count they will always get full health they will get their four full HP bar back but if you hit them with a star punch it will be an instant knockdown it will drain their entire health again so piston 2 is one of the more complicated fights this has been recently redone with the strategies they utilize you're gonna see a lot of the guard manipulation and what's termed as misdirection of gutters xyla it's gonna be trying to get piston hogs guard to go a specific way so that he can land gut punches when he needs to and then also of course land those max damage uppercuts we talked about so he did tagged me with a hit I'm gonna have to do a couple backup strategies okay so that's a backup strat if if you don't get the good pattern you want to make a mistake um piston honda 2 can always be knocked out if you jab his rush punch squaring the gut so that's a guaranteed knockout if you basically counter hit him out of that so that's the backup strat any time the runner would make a mistake in the first phase it's in - it's kind of nice because I was going for some really really fancy difficult strategies that were previously tool-assisted run only yeah I almost got it but it's a really tough fight speaking of a fight that's not terribly tough execution wise but is very random so - here you basically want to see him get ready to go into that Crouch animation that's that's his pose for when he's gonna throw his uppercut if he gives Allard that pattern zallard can basically put him in a stunned animation where he can land a guaranteed star punch and when he does that while soda is in that crouching animation it always knocks soda down so you see right here walks in star punch goes off so it goes down ideally you want each of these cycles to go 17 seconds 51 so it is a super super good soda if you can get it but it's random whether or not so - crouches down to do the big uppercut or he just throws a basic hook where he stays standing and he throws the hook solid can't actually set up that guaranteed star punch and has to wait and and take another shot yeah so I got one hook that's not good luck but yeah outside of that he didn't make me go pink if you run out of parts you only have eight in that fight then you're gonna be losing a ton of time so fortunately he didn't throw that many Oaks Bowl - this is a this is where fights start getting interesting because this is where the game starts demanding a lot of the player both execution-wise and in knowledge um Bob alt who can only be knocked down by hitting him with the star punch or by punching him out of his bowl charge which in an ideal situation you're never going to see him do bull charges out it's going to TKO him before he gets too do any of those but this is another fight with a lot of again that basic guard manipulation recognizing what patterns he gets if ball ball does the rolling jabs if he doesn't so there's this is one of those games where it would be awesome if we could actually have an input reader so people could see what's going on with the control pad is how it's doing these fights because there's a lot of times where he's having to tap up while throwing a punch and then immediately release up so that he can buffer his next punch and have it go through and not be guarded and it's it's a lot of knowledge a lot of execution that you don't really get to see all of the the intricacies just by watching the game for the first time yeah I tried to go for a misdirection gut so there's a 25% chance that you can sneak a punch through his guard he's really bolts he was really good at keeping his guard where your your input is it'll read whenever you press up or whenever you don't but 25% of the time he's not so good at it so he'll just the he'll ignore all input can just block anyway yeah Don to here this is the most random fight in the game in terms of the branching paths and the way things can go basically once that word gets a guaranteed star every punch that zallard lands going forward can result in a random star but it's a if I remember right a one in eight shot every time I got one random star and it's also one in 16 one in 16 thank you so good so whether or not zallard gets any of those random one in 16 stars completely changes um the the route and strategy he can use in this fight and basically he has to know where he's at in each phase when he gets those random stars and where to be able to utilize them for maximum damage alright so I got one random star in Phase one and he gave me the mid refill so the health refill on Phase two is random this is a pretty good situation yeah right now Don's cooperating pretty well like to give you an idea of how rare it is to get you know super super optimal luck in this fight I think I've seen Sylar get three random stars once ever in all the years I've watched you to attack and practice at this game but a 1:39 solid dawn to you would happen yeah take that in a single-segment anything under 140 is excellent that all right so these last three fights are incredibly difficult yep so you're gonna see as Allard's health bar actually goes to half if you hold select at the start of a fight your your health bar goes down to a half and you probably ask yourself why would you want to do that well the optimal strategy to beat mr. Sandman quickly is at one point so it's gonna take a knockdown in this match he's actually going to be purposefully knocked down on the mat because that will set up mr. Sandman doing his dreamland Express where he throws three rapid uppercuts in a row and that's also gonna let us talk about another major mechanic and that's the quick dodge technique that is very important especially in this fight um so you notice like salads moving left and right to dodge the punches stuff like that quick dodging is where you tap dodge and in MTP oh you pretty much always want to dodge left left is slightly faster to dodge by one frame and dodging to the right is and quick dodging where's our taps left and then does another input either up or down it cancels him out of the dodge animation as quickly as he possibly can and allows him to get more damage in by you know basically utilizing the stun mechanic when you counter hit a boxer there he did three quick dodges so that all these hits after the dreamland Express are gonna go off how all right and this is a really really good look at the moment yeah okay so I'm gonna take Oh okay never mind he gave me a bad right the bad refill okay yep so yeah this knocked down his intentional Valarie Valarie wants to do this because now immediately he's gonna go right back into the dreamland Express after a delay now salad should be able to get in enough hits to knock out Sandman from this point so the bad refill in the bad I fell makes that not possible that's right but that extra hit kind of helps a little bit 2:31 is pretty good for the battery fill yeah absolutely and mr. Sandman one of the only boxers in the game that cannot be defeated by a normal knockout you have to get a TKO and knock him down three times yeah they for whatever reason they program the point threshold would be like I don't know like 999 thousand or something yeah absurd that you can't even actually get so so mr. Sandman this is one of the most technical fights in the game and you're gonna seize our doing a lot of those guard manipulate manipulations those misdirections to get in a ton of hits and when his fights done well that's really interesting so I'm gonna let that work pickup pattern out all right so I got hit he's gonna get higher refills he gave me like a terrible pattern yeah I I can't remember the last time I've seen a pattern that bad yes a man is very random and you have to react very quickly do anything about it there you saw the spin punch action that mr. Sandman takes he can throw anywhere between three and an infinite number of those spin punches and ideally Zeiler wants to dodge and then immediately punish it after the the final spin punch it requires a very subtle audio cue that's really difficult to tell very nice I actually have three stars I could just see that here we go yeah a pretty bad fight getting tagged cost you a lot of time yeah but Sam man is I mean one of the most complex fights in the game because of how quickly you have to react to whatever pattern he does give you yeah one macho when he they're kind of gee watch oh it's all good when he was throwing those hooks hooks are the slower attack from him and he also just did really big delays so it kind of caught me off guard yeah so up next we have the dream fight with Mike Tyson himself very quickly this fight rule relies on a ton of frame perfect' inputs every time you see dolly dodge the uppercut which knocks you down one hit he's going to be going for frame perfect punches afterwards so it's a good serious time here it's solid phase one missed a couple but 104 I should be kind of okay yeah so he's either gonna throw four or five I'm gonna Bank on four that's four punches through phase one so now at the one the minute thirty mark Tyson goes out of the the uppercut phase and now goes into a more hooked standard look plays alright so this should be a pretty clean round one victory yeah I'm gonna go for some frame perfect hits just for the heck of it yeah it can't be understated how difficult this fight is even for players like salaried or sinister1 people who've played this game countless times round winning Tyson is incredibly difficult because again you have to go for those frame perfect punches in phase one 242 is pretty sly it's a really good single-segment run that's that's a wrap time time so yeah definitely shout outs to the Mike Tyson's punch-out community of course like Simon extols Minister we should we I'm Pat all all those dudes are great we're constantly finding new strategies for this game and yeah it's it's fantastic unfortunately sinister couldn't make it to commentate this he had prior commitments but good friend clay JH covered everything fantastic so yeah that's that's Mike Tyson's punch-out and enjoy the rest of gdq X good job thank you [Applause] well thank you for that great Mike Tyson's punch-out runs Allard it's not often we get to see Mike one round of Mike Tyson and speaking of that we have $10 from Cameron Underwood who says it doesn't matter what version he's playing on the zallard does awful wonderful things to punch out good luck on the run bud you got this donation goes to runners choice speaking of the Mega Man 9 and 10 bid war we have $50 from handsome Jack saying feeling like we need to visit a casino so Mega Man 9 is clearly the toy choice here and since we're setting up for that run let's see which run is the winner and it looks like Mega Man 9 is the winner with 1,100 one dollars and 77 cents and with Mega Man 10 at 770 dollars which means our next run will be Mega Man 9 don't worry if there's more things to donate for such as the GTA 3 versus Vice City game choice so far Vice City is winning at $325 but Grand Theft Auto 3 is not too far behind at 235 dollars also later in the night there will be the dog versus UFO ending for Silent Hill 2 UFO ending is currently winning at five hundred fifteen dollars and dog ending is at $190 we also have a bunch of prizes including an AMD risin 5 gaming PC which is a hundred dollars cumulative Lee donated over the event gets you in for that and we have various prizes you can win if you donate anywhere from 5 to 15 dollars during this block there's a link amigurumi at $15 and Street Fighter figurines also at $15 and if you're wondering what you are donating for well first off this is games done quick Express also known as gdq X and we are supporting the 10 charities in the twitchcon charity Plaza and the charity decathlon and they are able gamers the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention the Call of Duty endowment Direct Relief Doctors Without Borders Extra Life the make-a-wish Foundation Save the Children st.
