Migration is a gender equality issue

there are over 281 million International migrants in the world today about half are women people migrate for many different reasons including leaving behind poverty conflict and climate emergencies women and gender diverse people may also seek to escape deeply entrenched gender inequalities they also migrate for work or educational opportunities hoping to improve their lives and those of their families migrant women are agents of change who contribute in multiple ways at all stages of migration bringing diverse talent and expertise many also send Financial Resources back to their communities of origin too often we speak about migrants as if they were one group but for women and gender diverse people their experiences of migration can be vastly different to those of men because of the gender specific barriers they face despite their valuable contributions migrant women face consistent discrimination including racism and xenophobia they often work informally and lack protection under National labor laws leaving them vulnerable to labor rights abuses women and girls particularly those who travel via irregular migration routes face high risks of sexual and gender-based violence including trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation to these women access to essential Services is also often denied around the world countries continue to implement policies which restrict women's migration often in the name of protection but women don't need protection they need their rights protected and they need to have choices gender responsive migration governance means eliminating gender specific barriers by implementing laws policies and services that promote the rights of Migrant women and gender diverse people at all stages of migration in doing so we can ensure safer migration for all we can save lives Advance gender equality and improve the well-being of all migrants their families and entire [Music] communities
