[Music] alright guys in this video we're going to talk about underlayment for your standing seam metal roofs we're gonna compare synthetic felt paper to high-temperature ice in the water stick around we'll show you what it's all about alright guys my name's Erin we're here in our shop and today we're gonna look at synthetic felt versus high-temperature ice and water and if you guys are in the process of shopping for a metal roof especially a standing seam metal roof and you're taking quotes from your local roofing companies you've probably seen either synthetic failed or high-temperature icing water at least on some of your quotes so we're kind of gonna talk about well what's the difference between the synthetic felt and a high temp ice and water and then what the cost difference is between the two products and then is it worth the upgrade because the ice and water it cost more so it is an upgrade and we're gonna talk about whether that's worth it or not but before we get into all that I'm just going to show you that what I have here is a piece of just a normal synthetic belt this is a pretty standard felt paper in the industry it comes in 10 square rolls you can find it at box stores it's it goes down with cap nails and it's what's gonna go under a lot of like your shingle style roofs but guys put it on under metal as well although I don't recommend it I do recommend this this high temp ice and water for the reasons that we'll get to but this is just an average this is just an average roofing felt it's it's it's synthetic it's walkable its it's a good product it it does work but here we have a high temperature ice and water garden I guess the biggest difference between both of these products is this is gonna be nailed on with cap nails whereas your high-temperature ice and water guard is gonna be more like a membrane and it's gonna have a peel and stick back to it so this is going to get capped nailed on and although we do put some cap nails in this to hold it in place the high-temperature ice and water guard is like a peel and stick backer so it's got its it's got a walkable surface on the front but it's got a sticky peel and stick back so you're gonna pull the release tape and you're gonna install this by spacely sticking it to the wood deck of the home or the structure of the building that you're gonna roof in so let's talk about what the price of these two products are synthetic felt for ten squares is about fifty to sixty bucks in our area so for 50 or 60 bucks you get a 10 square roll that's similar around five cents a square foot for further material the high-temperature ice and water is going to be somewhere in the 70 to $80 a roll range but this is only going to be a 2 square roll so this high temperature ice and water with the peel and stick back is gonna run somewhere in the 35 to 40 cents a square foot just for the material so about 70 80 bucks a roll but it's only a 2 square roll and the the regular synthetic felt is 50 to 60 bucks a roll but it's a 10 square roll so there's there's a fairly there's a fairly decent price difference between the two products and I guess the question that you would have as a consumer is is it worth it well in my opinion it is 100% worth it on all of our standing seam jobs if you hung out on our YouTube channel and watched any of our metal roof installs some of our snap block metal roofing installs you'll see this product and and this is a good sheet here we don't always use this this is an MF M high temperature ice and water guard it's a peel and stick but we use other products as well but but I almost always will use a high temperature ice and water after we remove an existing roof because it just dries in the structure so on our shingle crews I don't mind using just a regular synthetic felt because our shingle crew will pull off 30 square in the morning clean it up and put 30 square on in the afternoon and we're done the house is never exposed and this is a great product for that but metal roofing is not the same way on our metal roofing crew we're gonna remove the metal peel and stick the entire structure and then start setting trims and then bring out our row for more probably the next day or the day after so it's a much slower process where the house does not have a roof and I just don't trust a piece of synthetic felt quite like I trust a piece of peel and stick that is stuck down to itself on the seams for a house with it's going to go overnight with no roof so sometimes on new construction projects especially where they're gonna add on to some of these smaller lighter commercial construction jobs that we do like a bank man that Bank has got to be dry and I just don't trust that to the synthetic belt I trust it to the peelings so we can dry in the part that they're adding on and it'll stay dry for three months four months and this stuff does a fantastic job so really is it worth the added protection is it worth the added money for a job in my opinion 100% so what do you get for the extra money well you've got a great walkable surface in this this high temperature ice and water and you've got the peel and stick effect so when you peel the release tape on this high temperature ice and water you're gonna get actual adhesion to the other sheet so these sheets are gonna self seal together and water an ice or wind or a thunderstorm or or some kind of big rain event is not gonna be able to blow water up underneath the scenes because the seams especially around the valleys and the transitions of the roof they're gonna be totally water sealed the next thing you get with the high temperature ice and water is that the screws that we run into the clips they're gonna self seal or if we hammer a cap nail into the ice and water it's going to self seal around the penetrations with the the fasteners that we make so that's another feature that you just don't get with the synthetic felt you're not gonna get the self sealing effect of the synthetic felt and then really the third big feature is just a peace of mind that you're not gonna cause leaks on the structure as you're going in through the roofing process so really is it worth it for the extra a little bit of money that it costs for the the peel and stick on an entire structure in my opinion it totally is thanks for watching guys we'll see you on the next one [Music]
