[MUSIC - "MY COUNTRY, 'TIS OF THEE"] (SINGING) My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. ANNOUNCER: The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square present a Music and the Spoken Word Memorial Day special, The Promise Of Liberty. Conducting today's program is Mack Wilberg with organist Richard Elliot and the spoken word by Lloyd Newell. [MUSIC - "MY COUNTRY, 'TIS OF THEE"] (SINGING) From every mountainside, let freedom ring. [MUSIC - "THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER"] (SINGING) Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight. Over the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star spangled banner yet wave. Over the land of the free and the home of the brave. [music - "because of the brave"] (SINGING) They never asked for glory. They never sought the fame. But they answered the call just the same. Showing courage beyond duty with noble valiant hearts, the flame of freedom shining in the dark. Because of the brave, our flag still flies high, declaring the truth that freedom is still alive. For all the blood spilled and the sacrifice made, we are the land of the free because of the brave. We embrace the cause of justice and cling to liberty and honor those who serve selflessly. They have shown uncommon valor against the sword of tyranny and have paid the cost that we may be free. Because of the brave, our slag still flies high, declaring the truth that freedom is still alive. For all the blood spilled and the sacrifice made, we are the land of the free because of the brave. Because of the brave, our flag still flies high, declaring the truth that freedom is still alive. For all the blood spilled and the sacrifice made, we are the land of the free, we are the land of the free, we are the land of the free because of the brave. [MUSIC - "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL"] (SINGING) Oh beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife. Who more than self their country loved and mercy more than life. America! America! God mend thine every flaw. Confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law. And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea. America! America! America! [music - "the washington post"] [music - "this is my country"] (SINGING) This is my country, land of my birth. This is my country, grandest on earth. I pledge thee my allegiance, America the bold. For this is my country to have and to hold. With hand upon my heart, I thank the Lord for this my native land. For all I love is here within her gates. My soul is rooted deeply in the soil on which I stand. For these are mine own United States. This is my country, land of my birth. This is my country, grandest on earth. I pledge thee my allegiance, America the bold. For this is my country to have and to hold, to hold. [MUSIC - "THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE"] (SINGING) I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice, and justice. With liberty and justice for all, for all. On June 6, 1944, this beach on the coast of Normandy, France became the turning point of World War II. At the time, France was occupied by Nazi Germany, as was much of Western Europe. But then Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allie forces, ordered an invasion. Code named Operation Overlord, it took place on this 50 mile stretch of sand, where some 160,000 American, British, and Canadian troops, with an armada of nearly 5,000 vessels, launched the largest seaborne invasion in military history. Addressing the troops before launching the campaign, General Eisenhower said, "The eyes of the world are upon you. We will accept nothing less than full victory." Against all odds, the hard fought invasion of Normandy was a success, and the course of history was forever altered. General Eisenhower never intended to be a military hero. As a youngster in Abilene, Kansas, what he really wanted to be was a Major League Baseball player. The world owes a debt of gratitude to the baseball coach at West Point Academy who cut young Dwight Eisenhower from the te, effectively ending his baseball career. Instead, Eisenhower became a five star general and the 34th president of the United States. He brought to Washington a military charisma reminiscent of presidents George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant, both charged with bringing the country together after deadly wars. In his final address as president in 1961, Eisenhower reflected on his half a century in the service of our country. His presidential council still holds true. America's leadership and prestige depend not merely upon our material progress, riches, and military strength, but on how we use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment. At this place made sacred by the sacrifices of those under Eisenhower's command, we remember and must never forget that our nation's best moments were born of courage and devotion to duty. We honor that history when we, as President Eisenhower urged, use what power we have to promote peace and make the world a better place. [music - "on this day"] (SINGING) The bugle has sounded. The notes drift away. This time now belongs to you. On this day, for one brief moment, hear the silence fill the air. Think of those who walked beside us, who walked besides us, now no longer there. Then don't cry but hear their laughter, for their spirit lives inside. Let the mystic stream of memory Miss fill our hearts with pride. Make us humble, make us knowing, and accepting what is done. On this day, for now, forever, make this nation one. On this day, for all the fallen, make this nation one. On this day, for all the living, make this nation one. [MUSIC - "A TRIBUTE TO THE ARMED SERVICES"] (SINGING) First to fight for the right, and to build the nation's might, and the army goes rolling along. Proud of all we have done, fighting til the battle's won. And the army goes rolling along. Then it's high, high, hey, the army's on its way. Count off the cadence loud and strong. 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3. For where ever we go, we will always know that the army goes rolling along. From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli. We will fight our country's battles in the air, on land, and sea. First we fight for right and freedom and to keep our honor clean. We are proud to claim our title of United States Marines. We're always ready for the call. We place our trust in thee. Through howling gale and shot and shell to win the victory. Semper paratus is our guide, our pledge, our motto too. We're always ready, do or die, our Coast Guard will fight for you. Anchors aweigh, my boys. Anchors aweigh. Farewell to the college joys. We sail at break of day, day, day, day. Through our last night on shore, hail to the foam. Until we meet once more, here's wishing you a happy voyage home. Off we go, into the wild blue yonder, climbing high into the sun. Here they come, to meet our thunder, at 'em boys, give her the gun. Give her the gun. Down we dive, spouting our flame from under, off with one terrible roar. We live in flame or go down in flame, for nothing can stop the US Air Force. America! America! God shed his grace on thee. Oh beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife. Who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life. America! America! May God thy gold refine, til all success be nobleness and every gain divine. America! America! ANNOUNCER: Thank you for joining the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square for this Memorial Day special, originating from historic Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Please join us again for Music and the Spoken Word. Until we meet again, may peace be with you, this day and always. [MUSIC - "GOD BE WITH YOU TIL WE MEET AGAIN"] God be with you til we meet again. By his counsel's guide, uphold you. With his sheep securely fold you. God be with you til we meet again.
