[music - "the handcart song"] (SINGING) When pioneers moved
to the West, with courage strong they met the test. They pushed their handcarts all
day long, and as they pushed they sang this song. Ye Saints who dwell
on Europe's shore, prepare yourselves
for many more, to leave behind
your native land, for sure God's
judgments are at hand. For some must push
and some must pull as we go marching up the
hill, so merrily on our way we go until we
reach the valley-o! Some must push and
some must pull. Some must push and
some must pull. Some must push and
some must pull. Some must push and
some must pull. For you must cross the raging
main before the promised land you gain, And with the
faithful make a start to cross the plains with your handcart. For some must push
and some must pull as we go marching up the hill. So merrily on the way we go
until we reach the valley-o! For some must push
and some must pull as we go marching up the hill. So merrily on our way we go
until we reach the valley-o! Until we reach the valley-o! [applause] [MUSIC - "FAITH IN EVERY
FOOTSTEP"] (SINGING) A marvelous work
has begun to come forth among all the children of men. O ye that embark in
the service of God, give heart, mind, and
strength unto Him; For prophets have
spoken and angels have come to lift
the world from sin, That Christ may reign
over all the earth and bless his gathered kin. With faith in every footstep,
we follow Christ the Lord, and filled with hope
through His pure love, we sing with one accord. Those marvelous Saints who
embraced this great work and shared it through
lands far and near, Who gave all their heart,
mind, and strength to the Lord with wisdom and
vision so clear; Now stand as examples
of virtue and faith, of souls prepared to
hear, Of knowledge sure, born of humble heart, and
love that banished fear. With faith in every footstep,
we follow Christ the Lord, and filled with hope
through His pure love, we sing with one accord. If we now desire to assist
in this work and thrust in our sickle with might. If we will embark in the service
of God and harvest in fields that are white. Our souls may receive
the salvation of God, the fullness of His light. That we may stand
free of sin and blame, God's glory, God's glory,
God's glory in our sight. With faith in every footstep,
we follow Christ the Lord, and filled with hope
through His pure love, we sing with one accord. And filled with hope
through His pure love, we sing with one accord. [applause] Tonight, we
commemorate Pioneer Day. 172 years ago with faith
manifest in every footstep, members of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints cross the great western
plains of North America by ox team and covered wagon. On July 24, 1847, they descended
through Emigration Canyon and began to build a
community of faith. And on that auspicious
day, the words of Isaiah began to be fulfilled. "The wilderness and the solitary
place shall be glad for them and the desert shall rejoice,
and blossom as the rose." [MUSIC - "SAINTS BOUND FOR
HEAVEN"] (SINGING) Our bondage it shall
end by and by, by and by. Our bondage it
shall end by and by. From Egypt's yoke set free,
hail the glorious jubilee, and to Canaan we'll return
by and by, by and by. And to Canaan we'll
return by and by. Our Deliverer He shall
come by and by, by and by. Our Deliverer He
shall come by and by. And our sorrows have an end with
our three score years and 10 and vast glory crown the
day by and by, by and by. And vast glory crown
the day by and by. And when to Jordan's floods
we are come, we are come. And when to Jordan's
floods we are come, Jehovah rules the tide and
the waters He'll divide. And the ransomed host shall
shout we are come, we are come. And the ransomed host
shall shout we are come. Then with all the happy throng
we'll rejoice, we'll rejoice. Then with all the
happy throng we'll rejoice, shouting
glory to our King till the vaults of heaven ring. And through all eternity
we'll rejoice, we'll rejoice. And through all
eternity we'll rejoice. Shouting glory to our King
till the vaults of heaven ring And through all eternity
we'll rejoice, we'll rejoice. And through all
eternity we'll rejoice. We'll rejoice. We'll rejoice. We'll rejoice. [applause] [MUSIC - "LIKE AN ANGEL PASSING
THROUGH MY ROOM"] ANNOUNCER: Ladies
and gentlemen, please welcome internationally
renowned soloist and recording artist, Sissel. [applause] (SINGING) Long awaited
darkness falls, casting shadows on the walls. In the twilight hour I am alone,
sitting near the fireplace. Dying embers warm my face
in this peaceful solitude, all the outside world subdued. And it all comes
back to me again in the gloom like an angel
passing through my room. Half awake and half in dreams,
seeing long forgotten scenes so the present
runs into the past. Now and then become entwined,
playing games within my mind. Like the embers as they die,
love was one prolonged goodbye. And it all comes
back to me tonight in the gloom like an angel
passing through my room. I close my eyes, and
my twilight images go by, all too soon like an
angel passing through my room. Like the embers as they die,
love was one prolonged goodbye. And it all comes
back to me tonight in the gloom like an angel
passing through my room. I close my eyes, and my twilight
images go by all too soon like an angel passing
through my room. [applause] Thank you very much. It is wonderful to
be here with you and with this inspiring
choir and orchestra. [applause] I just have to say, I
love to sing with you and I love to sing
from my heart to you. [applause] Coming back to Salt Lake City,
I have learned this time, a little about the
pioneers who came from the Nordic and the
Scandinavian countries, including my homeland, Norway. [applause] So there are some
Norwegians here. Oh, nice. About the time the pioneers
were making their journey, the Danish hymn "Dejlig
Er Jorden" was written. Soon, it was sung
all over the world. You know it as
"Beautiful Savior." In 2002, the Norwegian
composer Frode Fjellheim composed this arrangement
based on Norwegian aborigines culture, which inspired the
musical opening of the movie Frozen. Yeah, that was something
you didn't know. Well, just hearing it, you can
imagine those Nordic pioneers singing as they
drove their wagons and pulled their handcarts west. [music - "eatnemen vuelie"] [non-english singing] Fairest Lord Jesus,
ruler of all nations. O thou of God and man, the Son. Thee will I cherish. Thee will I honor. Thou, my soul's
glory, joy, and crown. [non-english singing] [applause] [MUSIC - "NORWEGIAN VALDRES
MARCH"] [applause] [applause] [MUSIC - "EG VEIT I HIMMERIK EI
BORG"] [singing in norwegian] [applause] "Eg veit i himmerik ei
borg," or in English, I know in heaven, a castle. This is a song-- well, this song is a prayer
of a weary traveler, a prayer for protection and peace. It's a kind of prayer
Latter-day Saint pioneers must have offered as they faced
their own storms of adversity. In 1885, in Sweden, Carl Boberg
was caught in a fierce storm while walking home from church. He hurried to shelter. And soon, the sky cleared
and a rainbow appeared. When he arrived home,
he opened the window and looked out toward the sea. And he could hear in the
distance, the church bells ringing. The storm had been great,
but the peace that came after was even greater. That night, he sat down and he
wrote the hymn "O Store Gud"-- "How Great Thou Art." It's a hymn that
still brings comfort to pioneers and pilgrims,
to people everywhere who endures the storms of life. [music - "o store gud"] [singing in swedish] My Lord, my God, when
I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds
Thy hands have made. I see the stars. I hear the rolling thunder. Thy power throughout
the universe displayed. Then sings my soul, my
Saviour God to Thee. How great Thou art,
how great Thou art. Then sings my soul, my
Saviour God to Thee. How great Thou art,
how great Thou art. How great Thou art,
how great Thou art. How great Thou art. [applause] [MUSIC - "OH, PETER, GO RING
THEM BELLS"] (SINGING) Oh, Peter, go ring
them bells, Peter, go ring them bells, Peter, go
ring them bells, I heard from heaven today. Oh, Peter, go ring them
bells, Peter, go ring them bells, Peter, go
ring them bells, I heard from Heaven today. I heard from Heaven today. I heard from Heaven today. I thank God, and I thank you
too, I heard from Heaven today. I wonder where my
mother is gone. I wonder where my
mother is gone. I wonder where my
mother is gone. I heard from Heaven today. I wonder brother Moses is gone. I wonder where Brother
Daniel is gone. I wonder where Elijah's gone. I heard from Heaven today. I heard from Heaven today. I heard from Heaven today. I thank God, and
I thank you too. I heard from Heaven today. Oh, Peter, go ring them
bells, Peter, go ring them bells, Peter, go
ring them bells, I heard from Heaven today. Oh, Peter, go ring them
bells, Peter, go ring them bells, Peter, go
ring them bells, I heard from Heaven today. I heard from Heaven today. I heard from Heaven today. I thank God, and
I thank you too. I heard from Heaven today. I heard from Heaven today. I heard from Heaven today. I thank God, and
I thank you too. I heard from Heaven today. [applause] [music - "my god is so high"] (SINGING) My God is so high,
you can't get over Him. He's so low, you
can't get under Him. He's wide, you can't
get around Him. You must come in by
and through the Lamb. My God is so high, you
can't get over Him. He's so low, you
can't get under Him. He's so wide, you
can't get around Him. You must come in by
and through the Lamb. One day, as I was walking
along the heavenly road, my Savior spoke unto me and
filled my heart with His love. My God is so high, you
can't get over Him. He's so low, you
can't get under Him. He's so wide, you
can't get around Him. You must come in by
and through the Lamb. I'll take my gospel trumpet,
and I'll begin to blow. And if my Savior help me,
I'll blow wherever I go. My God is so high, you
can't get over Him. He's so low, you
can't get under Him. He's so wide, you
can't get around him. You must come in by
and through the Lamb. You must come in by-- you must come in by
and through the Lamb. So high. So low. So wide. So high. So low. So wide. So high. My God is so high, you
can't get over Him. He's so low, you
can't get under Him. He's so wide, you
can't get around Him. You must come in by
and through the Lamb. You must come in by
and through the Lamb. You must come in by
and through the Lamb. You must come in by
and through the Lamb. [applause] [music - "panis angelicus"] [singing in latin] [applause] [music - "slow down"] (SINGING) In the
midst of my confusion, in the time of
desperate need, when I'm thinking not too clearly,
a gentle voice does intercede. Slow down, slow down, be still. Be still and wait, on
the Spirit of the Lord. Slow down and hear His voice,
and know that He is God. In the time of tribulation,
when I'm feeling so unsure, when things are
pressing in about me, comes a gentle voice
so still, so pure. Slow down, slow down,
be still, my child. Be still and wait on
the Spirit of the Lord. Slow down and hear His voice,
and know that He is God. And know that He is God. [applause] Thank you so much. That song, "Slow
Down," describes an experience many of us have. To be able to hear the
still voice in our hearts, we have to slow down. But then, what we hear,
what we feel inside, often inspires us to
get up and get going. Yes? [applause] In American gospel
music, the symbol of moving forward with
faith is a train ride. So get ready, everyone. The gospel train is coming. [applause] [music - "the gospel train"] (SINGING) The Gospel train's
comin', I hear it just at hand. I hear the car wheel rumblin'
and rollin' through the land. Now, get on board,
little children. Get on board, little children. Get on board, little children. There's room for many more. I hear the train a-comin'. She's comin' round the curve. She's loosened all
her steam and brakes and strainin' every nerve. Now, get on board,
little children. Get on board, little children. Get on board, little children. There's room for many more. The fare is cheap,
and all can go. The rich and poor are there. No second class aboard
this train, no difference in the fare. Now, get on board,
little children. Get on board, little children. Get on board, little children. There's room for many more. Now, get on board,
little children. Get on board, little children. Get on board, little children. There's room for many more. [applause] [MUSIC - TABERNACLE
CHOIR, "BOUND FOR GLORY - RAILROAD MEDLEY"] (SINGING) She'll be coming round
the mountain when she comes. She'll be coming round the
mountain when she comes. She'll be coming
round the mountain, she'll be coming
round the mountain, she'll be coming round the
mountain when she comes. And we'll all go out to
meet her when she comes. When she comes. Yes, we'll all go out to
meet her when she comes. When she comes. Yes, we'll all go
out to meet her and we'll all cry
out to greet her. Yes, we'll all go out to
meet her when she comes. Oh, I've been working on the
railroad all the live long day. I've been working
on the railroad just to pass the time away. Can't you hear the
whistle blowing? Rise up so early in the morn. Can't you hear the
captain shouting, Dinah, blow your horn? Well, John Henry
was a little baby sitting on his papa's knee. Picked up a hammer and
a little bit of steel, said hammer's gonna to be
the death of me, oh, yeah. He said Hammer's gonna
be the death of me. Well now every Monday
morning, Monday morning, when the blue birds begin
to sing, blue bird sing, You can see John
Henry out on the line. You can hear John
Henry's hammer ring. Hear John ring. Oh, yeah. You can hear John
Henry's hammer ring. You know the Rock Island
Line is a mighty good road. Oh, the Rock Island Line
is the road to ride. You know the Rock Island
line is a mighty good road. So if you want to
the ride, you've gotta ride it like you find it. Get your ticket at the station
on the Rock Island Line. So if you want to ride, you've
gotta ride it like you find it. Get your ticket at the station
on the Rock Island Line. Down by the station
early in the morning, see the little puffer
bellies all in a row. See the engine driver pull
the little handle, chug, chug, toot, toot, off we go. Down by the station
early in the morning, see the shiny train
cars all in a row. See the shiny train
cars all in a row. Waiting to get hitched up
to go on their adventure, chug, chug, toot,
toot, off we go. Freight train, freight
train going so fast. Freight train, freight
train, going so fast. Please don't tell
what train I'm on. So they won't know
know where I've gone. Freight train, freight
train, rounding the bend. Freight train, freight
train gone again. One of these days turn the
train around going back to my home town. [train whistle] From the great Atlantic ocean
to the wide Pacific shore, From the queen of flowing
mountain to the south bell by the shore, She's
mighty tall and handsome and know quite
well by all, She's the combination on
the Wabash Cannonball. Our Eastern states are
dandies so the people always say, from New York to St.
Louis and Chicago by the way, From the hills of Minnesota
where the rippling waters fall, No changes can be taken
on the Wabash Cannonball. Ooh. Ah. Listen to the jingle of
the rumble and the road, as she glides along the
woodland through the hills and by the shore, Hear the
mighty rush of the engine hear the lonesome hobos call. You're traveling through
the jungle on the Wabash Cannonball. Come all you
rounders if you want to hear the story
of a brave engineer. Casey Jones was
the rounder's name and on the 68 wheeler
course he won his fame. Casey Jones climbed
into his cabin. Casey Jones with
orders in his hand. Casey Jones climbed
into his cabin and he took his last trip
to the Promised Land. The gospel train's a-comin',
you can hear it close at hand. Hear the wheels rumblin' and
rollin' through the land. Get on board, little children. Get on board, little children. Get on board, little children,
there's room for many a more. Get on board, little children,
Get on board, little children. Get on board, little children,
there's room for many a more. Cause this train is bound
for glory, this train. This train is bound
for glory, this train. This train is bound for
glory, nobody rides it but the righteous and the holy. This train is bound for glory. This train is bound for glory. This train is bound
for glory, this train! [applause] [MUSIC - "ONSKA DIG ETT GOTT
NYTT AR"] (SINGING) See,
it's raining, gold from heaven on this
night of New Year's Eve. And the sky is full of colors
in a way we can't believe. Like a rain of sparkling silver,
it is lighting up the sky. It's a happy new beginning
in the magic winter night. [inaudible] are ringing,
people singing, raising glasses once again for the days
of joy that's bringing us a love that will remain. Wish for kindness and for mercy. Maybe something will come true
or remain the same old journey and the best that we can do. We reach out for heaven's glove
that appears this winter night. Like a never-ending story,
just a glitter of the light. We are hoping for protection
and to get a year of grace that will show us the direction
to a calm and sunny place. Let us [inaudible]
There's a [inaudible].. Let your loved ones
lift you higher to know you're not alone. Happy new year, the beginning,
Do the best for everyone. Sparkling colors,
bells are bringing-- now the new year has begun. Sparkling colors,
bells are ringing-- now the new year has begun. Has begun. [applause] Thank you. You might find it a little
bit strange to hear a new-- in fact, a brand-new
New Year's Eve song with 100 degrees outside and
being in the middle of July. But we can look at it
as today is a new start. We know that true
pioneers hunger for freedom and that new start. They want freedom
to go to new places and to create something new. This week, as I've heard
about the amazing pioneers who came here, I've learned
that they sought freedom to make a new home-- a home where everyone could
join hands and live in harmony. Creating that kind of
community isn't easy. But remembering the
pioneers who came before can give us the courage to try. Happy Pioneer Day, everyone. [applause] [music - "hymn to freedom"] (SINGING) When every heart
joins every heart and together yearns for liberty,
that's when we'll be free. When every hand joins every hand
and together molds our destiny, that's when we'll be free. Any hour, any day, the
time soon will come when men will live in dignity. That's when we'll be free. When every man joins in our song
and together sing in harmony, that's when we'll be free. When every heart
joins every heart and together yearns for liberty,
that's when we'll be free. When every hand joins every hand
and together molds our destiny, that's when we'll be free. Any hour, any day, the
time soon will come when men will live in dignity. That's when we'll be free. When every man joins in our song
and together sing in harmony, that's when we'll be free. That's when we'll be free. [applause] [MUSIC - MORMON TABERNACLE
CHOIR, "I'M RUNNIN' ON"] (SINGING) I'm runnin' on. I'm runnin' on. I done left this world behind. I done crossed the
separatin' line, and I left this world behind. So free, so free. I done left this world behind. I done crossed the
separatin' line and I left this world behind. I'm runnin' on. I'm runnin' on. I done left this world behind. I done crossed the

world behind, behind. I done crossed the separatin'
line, separatin' line, and I left this world behind. I'm coming home. I'm comin' home. I done left this world behind. I done crossed the separatin'
line, and I left world behind. Pressin' on, pressin'
on, pressin' on, pressin' on, I done left this
world behind, world behind. I done crossed the
separatin' line, and I left this world behind. I'm runnin' on, runnin' on. I'm runnin' on, runnin' on. I done left this world,
this world behind. I done crossed the
separatin' line, and I left this world behind. Ain't you glad? Ain't you glad? Oh, so glad. I done left this world behind. I done crossed the
separatin' line, and I left this world,
left this world, left this world,
left this world, left this world, left
this world behind. Good-bye! Good-bye! I done left this world behind. I done crossed the
separatin' line, and I left this world,
I done left this world. I done left this world,
I done left this world, and I've left this world behind. [applause] [MUSIC - MORMON TABERNACLE
CHOIR, "THOU GRACIOUS GOD, WHOSE MERCY LENDS"] (SINGING) Thou gracious
God whose mercy lends the light of home,
the smile of friends, our gathered flock
thine arms enfold as in the peaceful days of old. Wilt thou not hear us while we
raise in sweet accord of solemn praise the voices
that have mingled long to joyous flow of
mirth and song? For all the blessings life has
brought, for all the sorrowing hours have taught,
for all we mourn, for all we keep, the hands we
clap, the loved that sleep. The noontide
sunshine of the past, these brief, bright
moments fading fast, the stars that
gild our darkening years, the twilight ray
from holier spheres. We thank the Father, let the
grace our loving circle still embrace, thy mercy shed its
heavenly store, thy peace be with us evermore. Thy mercy shed its
heavenly store, thy peace be with us evermore. Evermore. Evermore. Amen. Amen. Amen. [applause] We thank the Father, let thy
grace our loving circle still embrace, thy mercy shed its
heavenly store, thy peace be with us evermore. Thy mercy shed its
heavenly store, thy peace be with us evermore. Evermore. Evermore. Amen. Amen. Amen. [applause]
