this is when do you finally get to see that first then there's this outfit with the touch of Elvis in the styling queen is wearing mine green by stood as long as we're interested in the Royals we will always be interested in royal fashion our fascination with what the Royals are wearing really stems from the fact that these are modern-day princesses a fairytale princess and her dress as far back as Queen Elizabeth there's been immense interest in royal fashion but nothing compares to what we're seeing today the Kate Middleton affect the Markel sparkle these days as soon as a royal woman steps out in something we know instantly who designed it where to buy it where you can get for yourself whether it's sold out and why she chose it a noble dog to the mother-in-law she never got to meet it's also really fascinating to see how much Styles have changed and evolved over the years from Queen Elizabeth through Princess Diana through Princess Kate and now through Meghan Markel we have really been able to see each woman's evolution through the lens of fashion there been so many memorable dresses in so many great moments we thought it would be really fun to look back at a hundred years of royal style [Music] [Music] queen elizabeth ii was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on April 21st 1926 as Elizabeth was growing up she started dressing the way her mom did there was a real shift in fashion at the turn of the 20th century gone were all the big bustles and flounces and as sort of fancy details there was a much simpler look and that's what the Queen Mother was wearing then the Queen mom's style was really very simple it was tailored dresses of course and just very unpretentious even though she was a royal and as Elizabeth was growing up that's who she looked to for a fashion inspiration in 1936 following the death of her grandfather and the abdication of her uncle Elizabeth became the heir apparent suddenly the 10 year old princess was thrust into the public eye as never before and all her parents training must have been at least subconsciously directed towards preparing her for that destiny before she was Queen Elizabeth was Princess Elizabeth or lilibeth as she was known to her family and her style was quintessentially English you know obviously aristocratic obviously royal but also very innocent and sweet she and her sister Margaret dressed alike a lot their clothes are very conservative they're impeccably tailored mostly wool and linen all natural fabrics they didn't have the sort of man-made fabrics we have today and of course you know this was far earlier than the days when everyone was scrutinizing every outfit that any of the rooms were let alone young Elizabeth so she had a lot less pressure on her on what to wear and it was very age appropriate girlish fashions of the time Lady Diana Frances Spencer was born on July 1st 1961 into a family of British nobility diana had grown up in an aristocratic household in fact one of England's most famed and aristocratic families and her style was exactly what you would expect from that you know handmade sweaters very prim and proper knee socks leather shoes that kind of a look as she grew older she developed this sort of what's thought of as the sloane ranger style we're young women in england who are upper-crust are sort of in the mold of barber jackets which are the the wax leather jackets they would wear for hunting or in the rainy weather again leather shoes pleated skirts that kind of thing and that was really Diana's look before she met Charles Lady Diana was back up at Pimlico kindergarten where she teaches this morning at just 19 diana began dating Prince she was very aristocratic I mean she'd grown up in in upper-class Britain society but but she seemed like one of us they said we wouldn't have to wait too much you thought you wouldn't have to wait too long she was a kindergarten teacher and very sweet and she was dressed very much like many other aristocratic women during that time very simple ladylike a lot of sweaters and skirts definitely modest but definitely youthful as well one of Diana's most famous early fashion moments came when she was still working as a kindergarten assistant and the photographer's caught her outside wearing a very sheer skirt and although it was dimmer the way the light hit it you could see right through and looking back it was one of the first times Diana sort of had to come to grips with the fact that every fashion choice she made was going to be scrutinized and she really needed to think of how it was going to photograph the future Duchess of Cambridge was born Catherine Elizabeth Middleton on january 9th 1982 in many ways kate was very similar to Diana she also grew up in an upper-class although not aristocratic family and she had gone to private schools and would also be considered part of that Sloane Ranger set and we see pictures of Kate back when she was in school in college wearing this sort of classic look of the knee high leather boots the fitted skirt a very again classic English schoolgirl look by 2004 the 22 year old was an art history major at st. Andrews University that marched the world learned that Kate had a boyfriend if the future is uncertain for William it must be too for his girlfriend very soon Kate Middleton could be one of the most famous women in the world you have to remember that Kate Middleton was a regular college student at the time and really dressed the part you know she went to class maybe went to parties she looked comfortable she looked cute but she was hardly chic she was a little bit messy even at times with the uggs and his lousy jeans and then she had the spaghetti strapp camisole she looked like an average college student on August 4th 1981 Rachel Megan Markel was born in Los Angeles California the American public first heard her name in 2011 when the 30 year old actress joined the cast of the hit TV show suits whatever new hot shot it is thanks that because I'm just a paralegal and I will somehow be blown away by his dazzling degree let me assure you I won't Megan style evolution begins with her role as an actress in Hollywood so there are so many photographs of her on red carpets and at events a lot of her outfits were really glamorous and sexy and also showed off her laid-back California style I'm a California girl this is fun for right now but I'm flip-flops and jean shorts as much as possible she was not only an actress a successful actress but also a blogger and an influencer who was really out there developing relationships with designers and really cultivating a very los angeles-based and a chic millennial style today's top story comes from Kensington Palace the Royal rumor mill is going crazy with this news Prince Harry has reportedly met his match in 2016 news broke that the 35 year old American actress was dating Prince Harry of course when you enter the royal family fashion comes with the territory and knowing what to wear and when to wear it Megan already had extensive experience with that I'll be at in a completely different forum as a Hollywood actress Prince Harry and Megan McCool have decided that this would be the event at which they would be seen together for the very first time the Invictus games was the first time we got to see Megan and Harry as an official couple and people were stunned because Megan wore wait for it with jeans just like a normal person ripped jeans this is future royalty she paired it with a button-down shirt kind of oversized tucked in in the front very you know very cool girl and she just looked I don't know regular but somehow better because you know effortless kind of chic but really laid-back Hallie girl not what you would think of for royalty the Invictus games was not the only time that Megan made headlines for her jay-z when she went to visit Cardiff Castle with Harry she wore a pair of black skinny jeans by a very small brand called Hyatt we're in a big meeting and the phone rang and a newspaper national newspaper phoned us up and said can you confirm that Megan Markel is wearing our jeans and and where were they going Wow like that was a really cool moment it was a tiny artisanal denim company in a small town in Wales the town had recently lost about 400 jobs but by Megan wearing the denim it created this huge boom to the local economy to keep up with the demand for all the denim orders Megan we're now jeans has been an incredible effect we have as a company three months worth of waiting list for our jeans and that's a great story because we were a world class maker 400 people lost their jobs and our job is to get 400 jobs back and that's incredible so we're getting our mojo back of her own style in that moment starting with Queen Elizabeth through the current day with Meghan Merkel a brand new engagement ring gracing the finger of his eldest daughter had prompted King George vi of England to announce to his loyal subjects that his daughter Elizabeth had indeed become betrothed to the handsome prince philip of greece in 1947 just two years after the end of world war ii the palace announced the engagement of Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten when you look at the engagement footage of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip you really notice the understated quality of her style and the way that it isn't over the top embellishment glam she's looking fairly subdued conservative these first pictures of the betrothed couple with Princess Margaret were to capture the imagination of the world the country was still very much in turmoil over the end of the war and so there was definitely a nod to more modest clothing and so the future Queen was wearing a light-colored simple dress with some bow detailing but of course the focus was not on her style in that photo it was just more about this happy occasion in the whole country was thrilled to be celebrating the engagement of this couple did it cross either of your minds that three days time it would be announcing your engagement married three years after they first met but only months after they began dating Diana and Prince Charles were engaged in 1981 just delighted and unhappy I am amazed that she's being brave enough to take me on Diana's engagement interview with Charles was strained it's the interview where he is asked he's in love with Tana and there was sort of a stilted stiff quality in Diana's clothing that day you could tell she hadn't quite found her style yet she was still very young the couple strolled around the grounds of Buckingham Palace posing for the cameras Prince Charles remarked that it was the first time he felt easy about walking with the lady with photographers around and not having to worry about the headlines in tomorrow's papers diana was just 19 when she got engaged to Prince Charles but when they stepped out for their engagement announcement and portrait she had to dress like an adult it made sense for her to put on his suit it was a beautiful blue color that worked with her eyes but it had this sort of 80s bow blouse underneath it it didn't really feel like the Diana we came to know it's a little out of step with what you would expect from a young woman at that age and sort of feels like she's trying to fit the mold before she really found herself lady diana took the opportunity to show off her engagement ring of sapphires and diamonds it's clear she's not quite comfortable in her own skin yet and even in her role as a royal fiance and of course we would see her evolve in ways no one could have imagined in terms of both her style and her confidence we're live at buckingham palace with news that Prince William is to marry his long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton next year in 2010 news broke but Kate and Prince William were finally engaged after dating for six years [Music] [Music] first big step into the spotlight with her engagement interview - Prince William she chose a now iconic blue wrap dress by the designer ISTA and to a lot of us it immediately signaled the blue that Diana had worn for her engagement photo so it seemed kind of a nice nod toward her new mother-in-law she paired it with the engagement ring that William had given her which of course belonged to his mother Princess Diana and so she showed a savvy knack early on for showcasing the the blue sapphire of the ring with the dress and she really excels at creating these tableaus for fans where it's almost like she creates a painting of her fashion the dress also really represented the fashion sense that we've come to expect from Kate it was beautiful but not very overtly sexy this dress set the tone for what was to come fashion wise from Kate Middleton it was elegant it was sophisticated but it wasn't stuffy or too prim it did have a V neckline it had the wrap detail which showed off her waist which is very small it didn't fall too much below the knee so it still made her look youthful and what was really interesting about this dress was that it was off the rack from a relatively small British brand named ISA and it retailed for five hundred and thirty five dollars now that's a lot for most people but for a royal you would almost expect her to be wearing high fashion that cost thousands of dollars so this moment of the Kate effect happened because well we could go buy the dress online and that's exactly what happened thousands of went right to the website to order the Kate Middleton dress when Kate's rap engagement dress sold out overnight that was really the start of the Kate effect and really recognizing that she had this massive influence globally on fashion it is an exciting morning in Great Britain news of a royal engagement this morning Prince Harry and Megan Marco engaged we're gonna have an American princess in 2017 Clarence House announced the engagement of Megan and Chris Harry later that day the happy couple sat for an interview with a BBC I happened a few weeks ago this month here at our cottage is a standard typical night just an amazing surprise for their engagement debut Megan chose a white line the label coat it's a Canadian brands a coat retails for 750 dollars and it was stunning this coat showed off Megan's love of statement jackets she's become known for wearing beautiful coats very pricey woman for her dress she chose a dark green below the knee sheath from a Milan based label called Perosh another small brand that she put on the map it was very conservative it was perfectly tailored it looked elegant it was very appropriate and of course it sold out in minutes [Music] tis the season the end of the year people TVs got you covered with holiday cheer from food to celebrities there's so much to see all month long on people TV [Music] [Music] comes the baigan when it comes to fashion nothing quite compares to the hype surrounding a royal wedding dress for months before everyone around the world is trying to guess who's the designer gonna be what style is the bride gonna choose what's it gonna look like how she gonna wear her hair how she gonna wear her makeup and we really see not with every royal wedding of the modern era Jude straws up at the whisk door and his majesty pauses to help the princess alight as a moment's delay you I imagined to the 15-foot train of the princesses most beautiful wedding gown for her wedding look Queen Elizabeth's stuck to her her style which is conservative obviously covered shoulders covered arms she's very modest very religious and wanted to be respectful of the church setting but it wasn't without embellishment it was made by her couturier Norman Hartnell who was inspired by Renaissance painter Botticelli's work Primavera which features flowing lines and floral embellishments and in fact it symbolized the rebirth of Britain after the war era seeing the thrilling bridal gown of ivory satin delicately embroidered in crystals and it took a team of 350 women two months to complete it featured a 13-foot train and the Queen topped it off with a double strand of pearls and of course a diamond tiara it is a radiant bride the loveliest the old Abbey has ever looked about on the raw Welling and thousands of floats outside it all went another kind of warmth to this London summer's day that dress shimmering like a mirage as it rippled down the red carpet behind it there is no wedding dress in history that is more iconic than Princess Diana's 80s era wedding trust diana always had a flair for the dramatic and her wedding dress was no exception it was big it was glamorous it was dramatic it was certainly of the time the 80s it had the big puffy sleeve it was not your understated minimalist look as was keeping with the time from the 25 but trained to the embellishments to the huge sleeves to the epic veil as she looked every bit a story about princess on her wedding day after that every 80s bride wanted to dress like her and she rode in the grass skirts all those forgotten now with her father despite all of the hype and excitement and all of the glamour surrounding that wedding the real show-stopping moment for people around the world who tuned in was the moment that we saw Princess Diana exit the carriage wearing that beautiful voluminous and slightly wrinkled wedding dress always it took a moment for any bride maybe Ayana have attained worthy of the biggest Cathedral in the world in the years since the wedding Princess Diana's designer Elisabeth Emanuel has said that when she designs the wedding dress she wanted Diana to look like a beautiful butterfly coming out of a chrysalis and that was the moment we were seeing when she exited the carriage now Elisabeth has also admitted she didn't really account for the wrinkling that we saw from having that humongous dress bunched up and squeezed inside a tight carriage and the taffeta on that dress obviously wrinkled no one had anticipated it and when you watch the footage of Diana leaving the carriage you see all of the attendants scurrying to try and smooth out the gigantic 25-foot train and smooth the wrinkles that long train maids night work you know they were partly successful but partly that added to the charm of the day is any heart that hasn't been run over by the other day it can kindly surrender now for me is a royal watcher my favorite royal bridal look is Princess Kate so if you imagined a fairytale princess and to address is that the picture you had in your mind I think perhaps it might when Kate married Prince William it was coming 30 years after the last major royal wedding which was of course Diana and Charles so the world was hungry for a new royal wedding and all of the glamour and beauty that came along with that and certainly Kate delivered it is the size after all these months of buildup and speculation that many have been longing for for her wedding Kate chose Alexander McQueen but it was a very conservative and demure Alexander McQueen it was a church wedding she wanted to be modest and looked like the perfect princess the dress really reflected Kate very classic style where she covered her shoulders but also put her own twist on it there was a lot of lace embellishment a high-neck many people felt that the dress evoked Grace Kelly's dress in her own royal wedding to Prince Rainier I thought it was just stunning really it again was appropriate because Kate Middleton is always appropriate the long lace sleeves were so elegant and gorgeous and the detail at the waist showed off her beautiful figure with the long skirt and train it was royal it was beautiful it had a hint of fashion it just really reflected everything that a future Queen should be I'm stepping into the spring sunshine the new royal couple the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge there is nothing like a royal bride but there is really nothing like an American royal bride the woman of the moment ms Meghan Michael what a moment of history and that's what we had with Meghan mark was wedding to Prince Harry everyone was literally holding their breath to see what Meghan was going to wear and in just a few moments time the doors will open and we will get to see a dress that has been talked about more than any other dress in the last couple of months because of her Hollywood background I think a lot of people were expecting a lot of glitz and glamour just a stunning Hollywood style dress and it looks to be an exquisitely cut and in many ways minimal and traditional dress what we got was far more simple Meghan went with a boatneck style gown with little embellishment from Javon she there was the boat neck that we've since seen Meghan come back to again and again a little bit more skin on the shoulders than we typically see from a real bride but the dress also was rather streamlined and long-sleeved very covered up in other ways my goodness may that spectacular the biggest surprise was it it lacked embellishment in a way we really hadn't seen from previous royal brides it was very minimalist really the most glamorous touch was the sparkling tiara on her head which held the 16-foot veil behind her we were talking about the dress twice a lot this morning I thought a dress it's proved to be this silhouette was very simple there was no extra ruching or design it was just a clean simple column dress and that's exactly what makes Meghan so modern instead of doing it over the top screaming I'm a bride dress she did this simple elegant and then we saw her in the most glamorous moments where she was attending a state banquet with world leaders wearing a tiara on her head the pre divorced Diana was a lot more royal it was very demure kind of conservative pretty and sophisticated but not at all sexy one of the most fun moments for Princess Diana in terms of fashion came when she danced with John Travolta in 1987 at the White House she was there as a guest of President Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan and everyone remembers that amazing magical dance she shared with John Travolta where he spun her around and she looks like a movie star he was a movie star and she was wearing a Victor Edelstein dress in a deep navy blue with a v-neck and that dress instantly became one of her most memorable then there's this outfit with the touch of Elvis in the styling another of Princess Diana's most iconic looks is her famous so-called Elvis dress it was named that because of the turned up high collar and the high level of glitz it was a white beaded dress dazzling designed by really her favorite all-time designer Catherine Walker and finally enough years later Prince William actually said that the dress was too awful to auction off to Christie's the news is all about Prince Charles heir to the throne and Princess Diana they have separated officially by the early 90s the bad news was that Princess Diana's marriage was coming to an end but the good news was that she was stepping out more and more solo and she was finding her confidence and showing it off through fashion of all of Princess Diana's iconic fashion moments the most epic one has to be her famous revenge dress did you try to be faithful to your wife when you took on the vow of marriage there's absolutely it was June 1994 and Prince Charles was going on TV to talk about how his marriage had fallen apart and you were yes until it became irretrievably broken down just hours after Prince Charles gave his devastating interview in which he admitted on camera that he had been unfaithful to Diana and cheated during their marriage with Camilla parker-bowles Diana showed up an evening event and she came out swinging Diana stepped out in this amazing off-the-shoulder low-cut black dress by Cristina Strombolian Princess Diana was tonight attending a charity dinner while her husband spoke of their past and future to millions it's just a shocking moment and definitely had eyebrows raised she's stunning and it was just really a moment where Diana truly stepped into her own it was clear she was not a shrinking violet all the sudden we were seeing Princess Diana like we had never seen her before we were seeing her in Versace in Dior in one of her favorite designers Kathryn Walker only now the hemlines were getting shorter the necklines were getting lower we were seeing more skin more fitted so adds more color more beading it was like Diana was coming to life in front of our eyes through fashion by the time of her death in 1997 Diana had become an undeniable fashion icon there is no one else who comes even close to her influence on royal fashion and no one else who has had the royal evolution she did in terms of style [Music] as future queen and mother of three the Duchess of Cambridge has developed a signature style befitting her position conservative elegant and often inspired by the occasion kate moves effortlessly between high-fashion and everyday designers Kate's signature style in a word is perfect she always looks polished elegant and appropriate Kate's dresses tend to be form-fitting but modest they tend to be kneeling she doesn't want anything too sexy she's a mom and she wants to look like a future plane she wears a lot of sheath dresses they always come to the knees she wears this year stocking she has the beautiful pumps her hair is never out of place Kate really always looks perfect as the future Queen she needs to make sure that she's putting for a more modest style that she's not being too ostentatious and that she's wearing very relatable clothing she actually is fine wearing relatively affordable contemporary brands like Reece and ISA which makes her style feel slightly more accessible to the rest of us but again it's always perfect tailored just for her although we see Kate in high-end designers we'll also see her wearing a pair of Nike sneakers or wearing a blazer that you could find at a store like Zara so one of the princess Kate's style strengths is that she's equally adept at pulling off the very high-end looks that she would wear to a formal occasion like a state banquet but also the very casual approachable accessible and even economical look that she would wear to say a day out floating with children in a youth club she shops a lot of stores that URI might and she wears clothes she doesn't want to spend a lot on fashion some people consider Princesa Kate the frugal royal with her fashion choices and her awareness of practicality and frugality and see her recycling looks to be mindful of the fact that she doesn't need a new outfit every time she walks out the door and there is precedent so that certainly princess and the Queen's only daughter has been known to recycle outfits that are more than 50 years old so she's not the only one to have gone back to her closet but certainly Kate has done it in a way that feels very modern they call it the Kate Middleton effect she does have this effect where she starts trend part of the Kate Middleton effect is the fact that Kate often chooses relatively affordable labels so if she wears a dress that cost just around $100 it's gonna sell out like that because women can actually buy it Kate visiting the Irish Guards at the st. Patrick's Day Parade with traditional shamrocks one thing we've seen Kate really excel at is honoring the country where she is but the clothing she's wearing or the event so for example we'll see her in green on an event honoring the Irish Guards or when she was in Canada we saw her wearing a lot of red and a maple leaf Roche the famous diamond maple leaf brooch given to the late Queen Mother to commemorate her royal visit to Canada back in 1939 one of the special things that Kate has always done is make sure that she includes these nods to Princess Diana's memorable fashion moments from her blue engagement dress - every time she stepped out after giving birth the Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a son when Kate welcomed her firstborn Prince George we saw her leave the hospital in a Jenny Packham dress which was blue with white polka dots which was actually a very similar echo of Princess Diana's dress when she left the hospital with Prince William a beaming Duke and Duchess of Cambridge present their new son to the waiting media in 2018 when Princess Kate welcome to her third child Prince Louie she left the hospital in a very familiar look a red dress with a peter pan collar it seems to be a very deliberate choice by Princess Kate to honor diana in these subtle yet striking nods to her own fashions a noble nod to the mother-in-law she never got to meet and subtly showing how she is following in Diana's footsteps no one has more pressure on them when it comes to what they wear then keep Middleton she is the future queen after all yet she pulls it off easily she always looks perfectly tailored she always looks elegant and appropriate and it always looks like there's a sense of purpose and forethought into everything she wears the duchess of sussex enjoyed a whirlwind romance and the ultimate fairytale wedding but with less than two years between meeting and marriage Meghan had little time to create a signature style which continues to evolve glamorous and chic she maintains royal tradition while adding a distinctly modern flair Meghan's entire induction into royal family life has been fast tracked and that includes her royal style transformation we're seeing her step into the role of the Duchess of Sussex almost like a character that she would play in one of her films or TV shows she has smoothly glided into royal fashion and royal style and we see it in everything from her choice of color palette which has become much more muted to the very British hats she's been wearing she's been a little more calm a little more sophisticated a little more demure but then hints of the original Megan slip out - she still has found little ways to break the rules when it comes to style within the royal family and that is everything from the off-the-shoulder pink dress she decided to wear during tripping the color from Carolina Herrera which marked the first time any royal woman has bared their shoulders during trooping on - the fact that she chooses not to always wear pantyhose which is something that her sister-in-law Kate Middleton always makes sure to do so Megan has found a way to kind of pave her own path megan is much more modern than kate well she has less pressure on her so that makes things a little bit easier so she can kind of bend the rules a teeny bit she loves tailored pants she's often in black which you rarely see Royals wearing all black she loves her messy bun whereas you have Kate Middleton never with a hair out of place so Megan has her own rule she always looks appropriate but she finds ways to be modern and even a little edgy at times I'm coming from Hollywood there's this innate sense of glamour and sort of sex appeal to Megan she is used to high-fashion she loves the gowns and the glitter and looking really stylish Megan is really not a princess she likes the brand she likes and she likes glamorous clothes and they tend to be a little expensive we all know that she loves Yvonne she starting with her wedding dress and she's since worn the label about six or seven times and that is a very very posh label swear she has also worn Carolina Herrera which is just a beautiful beautiful designer Megan definitely has an affinity for designer wear she's definitely putting forward a larger style bill than cake the Megan Markel effect is a real thing the Megan effect already in full force I like to call them Megan affect the Markel sparkle if you will while the marco sparkle is shining bright and really having effect on retailers who say that they see a huge lift in sales wearing something bright looking just like herself every single time it's always a delight people are always going to be interested in royal fashion is at the forefront of the family a lot of thought goes into every outfit they wear every time they step out nothing is on accident we see tremendous vast fascination with every single style choice they make and nothing compares to the way it is today
