[Music] come on hi Bobby okay that's me my spies I Myka yes nice nice to meet you sit down Kentucky okay so firstly why here so why medicine as a career choice um so medicine has been it didn't come to me as of just a spark moment saying I want to get medicine or it's it's kind of an accumulation of things over the past few years that have made me choose medicine correct pathway I think what my experience really helped at the start when I was really can used to enjoy science at school I was really confused as to why can actually translate that into as a future prospect and I did volunteering at Kevin's I did work experience where local GP and then I found that so interesting that I was like I need to see other aspects in this health care sure industry so that I am lucky got what crazy at Basel middle and I shattered some consultants there and I it was really eye-opening and I like I like the impact that you can translate the science into kind of an art and then a final people and the communication aspect and one of the main major things is that you're in the heart of the community yeah I mean there's lots of careers I like for example nursing there's a lot of science background and you know hospitals and apply some you know class things so why not nursing why have you thought about medicine as a separate no I agree and nothing less is at the background of the NHS industry and the health care cannot be sustained in this country without the help the nurses give in on ethical practice of an application of medicine however I'm the core fundamental preclinical medicine that is taught in the medicine course is a real interest to me I I'm really curious as as a person and to find out the core fundamental science behind how the body works is also very interesting to me so although applying it in my career is the main focus that I want to go into learning about it fills my curious nature so I think that's why it's clear no one needs a doctor in terms of the qualities they from what would you name is three main qualities that a good doctor has when well I look at doctors of doctors I've shadowed in the past I I see them as all around us so it's very difficult to you can't have a doctor who's weak on say communication or weak on intelligence or weak on his speech and we can't understand him so but if I had to limit it I'd say I'd say caring or and empathic because you need to have a core fundamental won't be helpful to a passionate conscientious that's also in the practicality of his skills and also conscious in the way he made lot to make sure that his foundations one medicine of sound and also confidence or good communication those kids mean your work experience to say five you thought about any specialties anything you want to really go into um I only shadowed around the GP and I think to em two departments in nostril I don't really have enough exposure calls to make a like huge decisions but every aspect that a tertiary Hospital and the GP placement both had their amazing experiences that I had with them so I can't really say this I mean so early tonight they show you having today and so maybe once more you know the sort of difficulties of being a doctor the dynamics they face one isn't very ethical scenarios so a lot of time the news is a lot of talk about assisted suicide once your view on assisted suicide assisted suicide is this sorry just a carrot because it's just the doctor helping patients in yeah so there's working clinics around the world where a patient is willing to die and it's kind of helping them finish that process of dying so it could be having them a tablet which causes them to die or have an alarm and tele treatment wasn't Eliza kind of helping the process of suicide which works in that terminal illnesses so do you think that should be allowed in the UK so I have done some wider reading around the subject of ethics and the areas around euthanasia and suicide assisted suicide and from that what I can say is I know it's allowed in some countries by learning the UK it is allowed and fundamentally as a person that's not a decision even if I was a doctor to make I think it's a structural decision that the Health Ministry makes and right now everything in the UK it's allowed maybe and I think the factors are such as the Hippocratic oath if the main purpose of the doctors to be just concerned like we'll save life so I don't think it's a lot to me and just changing pattern of a moment another ethical scenario I think I'm in recent years has been many strikes for example the cat the junior doctor contracts etc I'm sure you've heard about many of them many people are split but this some people believe that it's doctors right to strike of course as it isn't any other profession and some people feel that doctors shouldn't be leaving their post for a day because the effect on patients is very big so for your personal opinion what do you believe so yeah I agree this was in the news for quite a while and as a potential medical advocate this was of great interest to me because I was like this is the this is the people I'm going to be working with these are the people I aspire to become and down the streets for something that they're clearly motivated about and although at the start it was a blur because you'd already get the enough information out on just watching one news news clip later so I had I had to dig in and I read the student pmj I read some medical doctor forums and through that I really understood the broader picture of what the complex scenario of this contractual problem is between the NHS and the junior doctor contract so on but I ask you to go through the pros and cons of allowed on this to strike maybe on one hand argue when doctors should be allowed to strike on the other hand why I'm a patient can you go through that yeah doctors despite their amazing just by the amazing work they do they're helped people in the end and they have they do get tired they do have a life outside of medicine and as any other job they are they have the right to protest to want more pain or has sufficient paid we'll be rewarded with the amount of time and skills they get so in terms of their fundamental reason to strike this should be allowed as there are humans like anyone else and if within the democratic country if you have the right if you have problem with something I think you should have a right to to protest are they not paying patients at risk yes that so that's the second point I just kind of want to um I think the fact that this has to be done by hospital to hospital with its and people at the head the managers or the consultants they must allow the junior doctors to express their opinion through these strikes on ensuring that the minimum amount to maintain like maintain hospital running should be done so you can't have like hospital being empty because every doctor every nurse is outside but surely you should allow the junior doctors to have their days or allocated shifts to make sure that they haven't they can have their say but also don't that the general public at risk and yes that's one in which when you have a strike you right correct and saying that you have to prioritize and you look at the hospital physical they tend to rearrange elective surgeries which are not urgent whereas emergency services are still very very well start from the day so as you said there are many things that you can prepare for in advance yeah so we just be looking at your fastest statement it says you carried our work experience a buzzard a muscle to which you just mentioned could you tell me a little bit about what you did I want you learn from it yeah sure so I shadowed the nephrology Department and the neurology department I was I was in theater for two surgeries and I was really exciting for watching the doctors in hand sorting out and treating prostate cancer in terminal stages and they went through the surgeon it was very nice to see the multi display team the an authentic working with the surgeon the nurses being there to support the surgeon in any need and over to assistant surgeons so I've really loved the team dynamic that I saw there and the some of the things that I think were inspiring was the like the focus to cleanliness and hygiene that you I think in daily life we take these for granted so I think that was one of the things that was really amazing was there anything you saw that was kind of a mistake or anything any bad practice ezel from my eyes I don't think I saw any think that I could comment on I don't think there's a change of your medicine in any way initially when I did work experience energy people when I went to bathroom Hospital I found that everything was very structured and initially I thought this is so this is so strict on the timetable in its procedural but then I realized that this procedure kind of stabilizes the destabilised lives of patients that come in so they come in with their like messed up work messed up family affected and what the bat of aztlán hospital organized structure happened was they at least gave them security that you're gonna be controlled and organized here we've got you and that kind of like support that they gave mentally to the patient was very inspiring and just like looking at person saying you need lots of things acting a fair play guitar etc but amongst the water bath as everyone does in your weaknesses what do you say is your greatest weakness so I think my greatest weakness I'm trying to really work on his impatience that something as a kid I've always had my mom and dad your sourcing progressed into this kid and I tried to work on it and what happens is I want my my curious nature that makes me want to have hand everything and if I'm doing so sometimes I can't focus on one thing enough since the very long if you take guitar for example I love to play the guitar but then after I reached a certain level I got the candidates like moved onto the piano so this is something I'm working on to make may be channel like all my energy into some like a few aspects rather than all but impatience is something I think that's why probably my biggest weakness and I'm going into practice one important skill is teamwork you mentioned you not so small this about muscle fix so can you give me one example where you've shown good teamwork and good leadership as well in the same time in the same yeah so I played football for my school team and these are people I I do it by actually doing my school bit late old I joined Indian oil and I didn't really know the team or the team had very team dynamic going and I was lucky enough to get selected on the team but I didn't know the dynamics the passing learn how players are like the formation I saw I had to kind of fight inside the play I got my own set of team like team tactics that I played Monte and coming into this new team I had to adapt myself to work in there their kind of tactics or their strategy and that actually worked better because if I play find my place in the team we as a team perform better so kind of lowering your and adapting to your surroundings is very important in teamwork you have to compromise here in that and reach the best of the team code and how did you believe the medicine working in a hospital or in a hospital ward so that's an interesting question I saw one MDT which is like the multi disciplinary anyway they correct in that there were many doctors in there and there was a really complex patient I'm not sure what the case was but one consultant was saying suggesting one treatment and then the nurse said no actually this would not be suited to their lifestyle and then another doctor was saying something and in that scenario I saw that these people eat with their own authority had to kind of come to a decision because in the end they don't that time is limited and they had to sort it out and in that I saw one of the consultants leading the process of being like it we've got these things at hand you've got this option you've got this option and now let's kind of come to unanimous agreement on what the best alternative is Johnny and each doctor had to compromise on a little bit on what they wanted for the patient in the end they have to understand that everyone in team wanted the same thing and that's the same football I guess everyone wanted to win by everyone to win the league so it's kind of like just everyone works together in the end for the same goal and that's the main key I think so moving on you said you do all of the reading and in the BMJ journal for example so what do you know about the Charlie card case I'm afraid I don't know about the Charlie Bucket that's okay no I just thinking you told me anything else you read in the news recently for example about GPS I've read an article saying suggesting the fact that GP had to be open for seven days I think I think it's last month or so and I also read an article out online consultations there now doctors are like pan across the country are doing constantly pushing yes so that is very much in the news recently tell me about this idea what you're forcing healthcare moving online example of video chat I think medicine is as a as an industry has to embrace technology and we have been for the past 200 years there's new techniques that come as though revolutionize healthcare for the the population and the internet with its pros and I think has a lot potential to offer in terms of consultations doctors have a greater skill set and like communicating patients who are maybe physically unable to attend a clinic or specialist doctors who are too far away from the patient's if they have no line consultation I think it's something to embrace thanks for watching click here to sign up for one-to-one tutoring with insider University knowledge guaranteed improvement and a personalized experience get your
