regardless of where I ended up today you were going to look out for me and get me to where I needed to go for the next 4 years and apparently that is Chapel Hill so it just felt like it would be crazy to not include her in that moment even though it might sound odd to call my deceased mother I just felt like I was missing my person and my person's my mom [Music] so the first video is a recording of me calling my mom to let her know that I was accepted at the University of Utah school of medicine I am accepted into the University of Utah's medical class of 2020 years did you cry and I said just stay positive just stay positive it's going to happen I know it's going to help that I can feel it so the second phone call was a little unconventional because unfortunately Flash Forward four years my mom is no longer with us she still has her same phone number we got the exciting news that I would be going to UNCC Chapel Hill I wanted to call her and tell her again leaving a voicemail this time obviously she didn't answer hi this is Jackie sorry I missed your call hey Mom it's it's me um I have some news for you um I am going to be an Opie guide at UNCC Chapel Hill in my third year of medical school I got a call from my stepdad after my morning rounds and found out that my mom was at a work event and she had suffered a traumatic brain injury just from a fall down some stairs and wasn't predicted to survive so I was really quickly flying back to Montana to go um be with my family and see her before she passed my mom Jackie she is amazing I think she is a force of nature she raised me as a single parent she has always been my ultimate role model and best friend I think that she's the best mom that I could have ever been blessed with my decision to go into medicine in general and then go into oigan and be a future Obi I think she directly plays a huge role in those decisions she was an LPN in labor and delivery when I was really little and so I got to see her every day putting on her scrub and go to work and I thought she was just a superhero I think that I wanted to have that second phone call because I just felt like I needed some time with my mom on sorry when the video got posted I was not expecting to have like as many people responding like directly to me as if we were just talking um and I think it was really cool I just think grief is a part of the human condition at this point um but it is nice to have people directly reaching out and saying that like showing how I am still trying to be connected with my mom and my story has like helped them feel as if they can keep going to that next goal that they have with their person alongside them in a different way I have lots of family coming to support me and try to you know be Jackie substitute cheerleaders we always have a cheers to Jackie her drink of choice was a lemon drop and so I'm sure we will do a nice uh lemon drop toast to Jackie and our next adventure to North Carolina
