and here is the day we've been waiting for the best muscle cars in the world frank mkhitaryan has tim who's addressing the crowd his caretaker is over it is now your turn bid freely good luck 1969 dodge heavy daytona 6 435 our original mile the lowest mileage original engine four-speed hemi daytona known to exist on this 69 dodge heavy daytona the star of the wellborn collection i just got the chills me too i mean i'm not lying it's crazy 500 000 bid before we can even put the graphics up on the screen 600 000 this is one of one there's that hemi legendary power the elephant motor they call it three quarters of a million dollars almost there had to back it up by 50 grand this morning talked about a lot of these cars and he said this is one of one he's learned about it very recently the finest for sale on the planet i get why you guys love this when they said the reserve is off i just got crazy chills just standing here we've got an 8.75 so we're gonna have to be nine now nine eight seventy five and now nine hundred we gotta be nine hundred thousand sir nine hundred dollars for sale we're gonna miss that if we don't do something pretty quick 900 i don't know apparently now two telephone bidders you saw me one time one time congratulations thousand dollars you got her 900 000 of the wellborn collections congratulations to tim and pam what a way to start this off put a smile on his face early won't it oh my goodness they are happy and this crowd is buzzing well that is the first of 24 so there's a long way to go but you said it jk you can't start off much better than that next up for us is a 1978 pontiac trans ham that belonged to burt reynolds and if you buy the car you get a burt reynolds hat along with pontiac power all the way with the 6.6 liter turbo hydramatic automatic transmission and that very design desirable ws6 performance package which includes those beautiful honeycomb wheels yeah this car owned by burt reynolds he owned it and drove the car for his personal use copy the original title in bert's name still goes with it and i think there's a little bit of a premium there with that i mean we know that with steve mcqueen everything he touches turns to gold but burt reynolds with this particular car what other owner would you want but sally field sat in that car 85 000. well they were a couple weren't they for a while in real life reynolds sally fields a couple for a loan i think so yeah they have to presume she's probably been in there with him and check out the cb antenna on the back does that take you back to the movie smoking the bandit this car was not used in the movie it was actually right owned by bert and driven by him for many years i gotta wonder jk and guys how much the adrenaline and the buzz in the room around all these high end mopar machines is going to affect the bidding on some of these other cars maybe people get caught up in the moment you know and uh this one sells for 90 000. wow two for two so far for the well-born collection as we near the top of the hour here on the east coast just about four o'clock and we welcome you to our meek of auction coverage from the osceola heritage park in kissimmee florida here on nbcs i'm scott hoke with john kramen bill stevens stephen cox rutledge wood and we are now in a period of limited commercial interruption so we may bring you the vast majority of this 24 car well born collection up next built your favorite one of the of the bunch my car just sold the reserve is off just came off at 45. it's not sold yet bill the reserve is off at 40 000 but you can still get a bid in the deal maker will allow you we'll vouch for you at least most of us will as long as we got a voucher yeah you know you're gonna break my heart you get my hopes all set up and watch what happens is this your ultimate viper gts yes 96 first year for the gts cool blue with the white stripes the only way to get them this is still fairly decent money for this i mean put your hand here give me your hand put your hand up me me pick me what a bunch of troublemakers 8-liter v10 with 450 horsepower 6-speed manual transmission air conditioning that unique double bubble roof 1166 of these gts viper coupes were built and it was the 96 indy 500 pace car too yes you remember that were you around back in that era 96 indianapolis 500 absolutely were you working at there you weren't working that was the first year of the irl was it not yeah but i didn't split what year no surprise on the price investment great quality 10 000 careful miles pristine condition never going to be worth less than that bill no first year for the gts coupe that's always going to be collectible well this is one of the vehicles coming up next that we have not had a chance to uh extensively preview tonight their 2012 fiber diamondback motorcycle a six-speed 152 cubic inch bike all billet short stroke v twin got some dna here all you guys will recognize uh built uh built and designed by andrew bradley of lola cars built in partnership with illmore engineering yep tremendous amount of uh big names there both the road racing and indycar world yes and you're right scott this is very high tech all the way down to the adjustable air ride suspension miles is this low enough for you three test miles only on this motorcycle since noon yeah i remember running in running into mario alien quite a bit at the indianapolis motor speedway partnering with roger penske and his group back in the day ill more engineering fighting your way through to ari now that was a story right there and maybe at indy we'll talk about that you had to get to him it's like trying to get to a rock star oh wow yeah good guy once you got there but it wasn't easy yes he's a terrific guy and next time you run into him have him do his elvis impersonation for it it is something to behold 16 000 for the 2012 viper diamondback deluxe interior 1970 boss 429 john crayman unrestored ultra low miles ultra high documentation yeah perhaps the finest 1974 boss mustang 421 on the planet yeah second and final year for the boss 429 with that 375 horsepower semi-heavy engine four-speed transmission and the optional drag pack as well terrific colors grabber blue with the white interior and a ton of original less than 5 000 original miles you know and tim told me this morning speaking of originality he said not only is this the original paint it has never had any retouching at all so this is and probably the top engine option available for the 429s they had the uh let's see the t codes which were kind of downgraded 429s they had the c codes which were the hottest ones that came out very early on but suffered from reliability problems and this is an a-code 429 engine and it's the most readable they had redone the valve trains on them they had toned them down with the small controls and the emissions and they still put out a ton of power very streamable and they were used in the production run for the 69 and 70 boss nines this boss 429 engine sharing nothing in common with the other 429 engines would have been available it was a exclusive special very exotic engine is these cars jk as you see frank and the phone bidder with jessie copp going toe to toe how they had to send him out to car craft to get him to engineer it to be able to accept those engines and a lot of people why did they do it in the mustang body why didn't they do it in a body that might easily accept that big engine they just thought that the lighter way the mustang might be the best wiper street four and a quarter 425 000 tim asked me to keep track of how much all of his cars are selling for i can't count that high your brother-in-law is on the other line he can yeah he probably could 1970 challenger ta unrestored original ta and tip told me this morning guys that this this car is the most fun to drive of all the cars that he has and uh he said you know what who needs a radio in these cars the high horsepower small engine pony cars are a delight to drive 70 dodge challenger ta that's a 290 horse three two barrel carburetor 340 four-speed transmission automatic was available rear window louver terrific colors lots of originality another investment grade car out of the well-born collection 170 now 170 these cars just absolutely going off of the charts he didn't tell me anything about you got it 185.10 pre-auction low estimate on this car was 125 000 which would have been a strong price for challenger blew right past that estimate no question about it 185 so we are six for six number seven to roll out is a 1970 aar cuda and tim is well known for low mileage high option cars and as far as aar cudas you're not gonna find many more options on any other car kissing cousin to the dodge that we just saw sell the dodge ta same power plant 340 cubic inch three two barrel carbureted 290 horsepower four-speed automatic was available on this that final top is even original there's so much originality on this car fully documented and 20 385 documented original miles now let's talk strategy here for a second jk from an auction standpoint if you're a bidder these cars are going high i mean they deserve it but they are really drawing strong money do you wait and ride this wave of emotion you know maybe will it level off after a while because this is unprecedented this is unbelievable i think it's more strategic than that what you've got is you're taking advantage of 20 years of wellborns collecting savvy selecting and hand-picking the best examples in the world that's what these cars are that's why they're bringing the big money and these cars will never be worth less today ever in the future nevertheless and they have not been out there and available for a long period of time most of them and this one goes for a hundred and forty thousand dollars now to the car that we've had sit next to us at a number of auctions john the 1971 hemi charger rt with the sunroof it is one of one they only built 30 chargers with sunroofs in any engine combination let alone with this hemi yeah and a ton of other options well believed to be the highest option 71 hemi charger rt known to exist automatic transmission on this one four speed was available as was the heavy duty torque flight and guys when we say that these are some of the nicest ones we've been spending days around these cars there's no part of these cars you couldn't eat off of it's these are absolutely meticulous top to bottom clean it's insane and we heard uh tim himself talk about roger gibson who did most of the restorations on these cards that's the level of work he's famous for i don't think i've seen one of the sunroof cars in person at all i saw one as a plastic model kit when i was a kid that's the closest i came that's how rare these things are that stereo radio inside that that's a that is a cassette player with a tape recorder that's right a dictaphone where a uh executive enjoying the sunroof and the power of his hemi could actually uh make some notes this car as far as its ownership history includes kevin green the former nfl linebacker a noted mopar collector he's owned one or two other cars in this collection as well including the 900 000 daytona 3.75 for this one and for the sunroof car the bid goes on the first one of those we've had we'll take a very quick break hopefully our only commercial break during this collection we'll document what happens if need be during the break back in a moment we're back live in kissimmee as we pick what's to pick up what's going on in the 1971 hemi charger rt the reserve has just come off at 210 000. guys this is an rt pilot car and was actually started the build on this was started all the way back in 1968 believe it or not reserves off at 2 15. this car never was intended to be sold to the public as a pilot car a pre-production assembly line car it was intended to be destroyed but instead guess where it went to how about mr norms grand spalding dodge the the king of the performance dodge dealerships late 60s early 1970s and we're seeing it now sell for 215 000 beautifully restored by mopar expert roger gibson inside though this is a car that is just meant to look at it does drive however there's a lot of stuff behind the dash that's not hooked up and does not work because as we said it was a pilot car it was a show car intended just to look at using a lot of literature as well yep thank you mr norm by the way yes all right 215 000 and now we move on to the fastest muscle car that tim welborn owns period 1970 buick gsx stage one 455 360. horsepower four-speed transmission automatic was available signature touch of course is the hood mount attack only two colors available hollow white saturn yellow this one of course in the yellow beautifully restored david kleiner did the restoration on this he's one of the top buick experts and it also is done to a very high standard as all the cars are as part of this group two hundred thousand dollars i can without even exaggerating that would be a world record price for a buick gsx and forget about horsepower the unbelievable torque in these cars is why it's the fastest car in tim's collection 510 pound feet second to the daytona's this one is one that got more eyes i think than any of the other towers and this one sells for an even uh cranked up here my friend because here is your pick rolling up into the auction block right now here you go man the omaha orange 69 daytona i'm telling you this is this car is what dreams are made of right there 375 horsepower 440 is actually the base engine on the daytona of course the hemi also available four speed and this one automatic it was an option and a solid state m radio interesting to mention the word solid state keep in mind transistors in the 1960s relatively new invention by the late 60s they all the radios were but it is kind of fun to talk about that rutledge let's talk about the wheels on this guy because you and i and tim were talking about it this morning these are nos kelsey hayes wheels they call them the recall wheels because they broke they came out and then were recalled within weeks because when you have one of these big block cars going through a turn basically the wheel center would stay on the car the rim and the tire would dislodge themselves and go somewhere else so they were wrecking cars recalled the wheels so they brought all of them back he found these new in a box and said they were i think five thousand dollars maybe 20 years ago yeah so you can imagine how much they cost nowadays we saw a lot of base engine 375 horsepower 440 daytona we i just want everybody at nascar to know and realize that none of us still to this day have forgiven you for killing the arrow wars because you guys killed this car of course they gave birth to it too you know stephen we were due for a little hate from you so that's a perfect time for it count it down 280. chuck glanville's been busy back there on the telephone come on sonny in the car still can't believe this car was petty blue black engine bay when he found it in the list underneath it and whoever wrote it everything is orange including the wheels even spelled including wrong it's on that build sheet really neat piece can you imagine finding that petty blue daytona and when tim discovered exactly what in fact it was you got it holding his emotions back to save himself for a little bit of money tim acquired this car all the way back in 1999 and note the time and the date on your watch it just changed hands for 280 thousand dollars 1971 is a very special year for tim welbourne he's got eight heavy cars from 71 and he said that year is so special because his dad had a car from 1971 a hemi car that he remembers and so that's got given him a soft spot in his heart for these yeah this super b has the automatic transmission matched up to that 425 horsepower 426 cubic heavy 834 the code for the super track pack this one's got it it was cool hearing tim talk about on clear nights he could hear the chicago radio stations sitting in that his dad's car and he'd hear the commercials from mr norms so he knew about this place it was where all the hemis were from he knew he had to get up there one day get a car yeah do we have time to tell the elden palmer story yeah go ahead yeah sure yeah well eldon palmer will go down in indy 500 history as the pace car driver who crashed into the grandstand the challenger the photographer prior to the race yeah yeah and this is the car he drove to the track that day and after the accident and all the two malt and the hub up he drove this car back home and it sat there for a long time not driven before it was finally sold this is the car he drove to the track that day restored by roger gibson all the way back in 2004 but of course as is typical of all the vehicles and tim and pam's care it is just as nice as it was the restoration was completed 10 years ago we're out reserved check out that air grabber hood how cool is that what a wild styling touch the end of a fantastic era the culmination of an era started in the 1960s street hemi first came out 1966 about 10 000 hemi cars were produced it all ended in 1971 with this run of cars we're seeing right here you mentioned eldon palmer driving the pace car at the start of the 71-500 remember the passengers with him in the car tony holman owner of the speedway chris schenkel long-time legendary broadcaster and john glenn were riding with him when he crashed those are a-listers yeah you know john what you left out when you were showing me around yesterday morning is when they take the reserve off there is a rush of air through this room i think everyone exhales at the same time that is an insane feeling 40 000 ago by the way the reserve came off here is a real connection here between the car that just sold for 190 and the following car because they were consecutive serial number cars and i stood in front of these last night and wondered what it would be like to stand at the assembly line and watch the red car go off first this one right behind it it's a 1971 hemi super b so do again mr norms this one also with an automatic transmission chrysler did a great job beefing up their torque flight automatic to handle the power of that massive massive hemi optional a01 hideaway headlights also on this one giving it some extra style in the front and another air grabber hood car with the factory installed hood scott with your luck you would have been at the factory on lunch break and missed them both well that may be true we're up to six figures already that hemi engine so distinctive with those large wide black crinkle finish valve covers with the spark plugs and the spark plug wires going right down the center of the valve covers easy to identify you know this deep blue is not a color that you ordinarily associate with this car and i think it looks spectacular notice the bench seat and the automatic car shifted by 145 135 135 this one now to 160. you know that blue stephen you know that's just one aspect of that car makes you wonder what the person who ordered it was going after it because it is a hemi column a couple of different ways of doing your muscle car a little luxury here a little appearance there performance this is the answer to a number of questions that none of us would have asked it's just it's that unusual and it's you know it takes a while to come up with a car like this super track pack too well i think norm krause wanted this car came out of his dealership grand spalding dodge he wanted with that white vinyl top to match his white belt and his white shoes that he used to wear back in 1971. that's it you mentioned that blue steven and it is called b5 and compare that a little bit later on to the hemi charger rt coming up in three or four lots of jamaica blue a little bit darker a little bit deeper than this b5 blue and this one sells for 190 000 the same guy that bought the previous car how about that the gentleman bought the two consecutive oh thank you bill all right next up is the 1970 unrestored triple black chevelle ls6 this was the top dog of all muscle cars with the horsepower rating on the 70 chevelle ls6 450 horsepower 454 turbo hydramatic automatic transmission optional am radio optional tachometer optional gauge package triple black absolutely you've got a vinyl top we can call it that bucket seats with the automatic floor shifted on this one 120. 100 000. acquired by tim and pam back in 2006 it's a relatively recent edition of their collection you know where he bought it auction right here in kissimmee oh and his first meek of auction so tim welbourne's history with dana meeken goes all the way back to 2006 here in kissimmee how about that and the reserve is off we're batting almost a thousand here tim and pam both have had just from the beginning of the first how about one third well coming up next on nbcsn it's nascar america more on jeff gordon's retirement announcement and an interview with rick hendrick nascar america is coming up next here on nbc sn a little more than 30 minutes from right now this is like the greatest muscle car history lesson i think we've ever had roll before us every car has a great piece of history attached to it well you like your hemis rare how about this one guys 71 dodge heavy charger rt hemi automatic transmission air grabber hood but check this out only white interior plum crazy hemi charger rt known to exist this might be the only one left yeah documented 101. and it's the color that i so frequently associate with it but who would have thought that those options would have stacked up to be one appointment but plum crazy white vinyl top hemi under the hood this is my vision of what a charger is supposed to be it's the charger that i grew up with it's the very first model kit that ever built and i gotta say i think this is truly the most beautiful charger that i have ever seen and that white tears have been unusual typically these would have been hard with black and it's just that contrast is just so striking and appealing we went around the horn and talked about our favorites and uh this is pam welborne's 225 we're that's and that's where it hammers 225 000 bucks stephen the emotion in this room is really getting carried away can you go tell a racing story hey you know that chocolate chip cookie i left on your computer a few minutes ago yeah i want it back hey boys you're not gonna like it the way you're gonna get it back remember the b5 paint i told you about here's the comparison for a 71 hemi charger this is jamaica blue darker and deeper in another one of one hemi charger john best heavy mopars in the world crossing the auction block scott another 71 heavy charger rt this one also an automatic transmission of course still sporting original style two four-barrel carburetors carter supplied those carburetors from the time that these were built on the street in 1966 all the way through the end in 1971. guys it's going to be interesting to see john if the reserve comes off this one i got a little insider from pam i think they love this they keep it they'd like to keep it i'm just i'm i'm not sure if it gets high enough that guy in the front row over there keeps bidding and maybe they stay there i'm gonna say they're gonna sell it i bet they will i don't think there was anything on the option sheet that did not get checked off when this was was first purchased yeah it's got everything well and it's got all as all these cars do the documentation to back it all up one of his first cars he got wow this must be his beater i guess huh yeah well his beater now has a high bid of 200 000 we're going to hear from tim welborn uh when we finish the collection here in a little bit a few more cars to go give me one more time i think something might happen on this one seven more to go for us they're working on it pretty hard she says no she's keeping it and tim said she's the boss 220. yeah weird you've been called to the principal's office you to wonder if them feeling like they don't want to get rid of it is that going to make it worth more here comes dana do you want to buy the blue car she's one to keep the damn car two and a quarter he'll sell it otherwise 225 buys the blue car are you 200 000. high stakes i think this is the quietest i've ever heard during an auction i know you do let's go i'm a failure well you know what pam gets to keep that jamaica blue hemi charger rt look at her she's delighted the card itself world record money and she's as happy how about that wow put an asterisk by that one it got up to two hundred thousand dollars next up is uh hemi charger 500 again one of one high option the most high option charger 500 on the planet you know steven you did a great job explaining what exactly makes a charger into a charger 500 it has nothing to do with the engine this has got the top engine for hemming that flush grill that flush back in all or the uh back window all conspiring to get this car as much good aero dynamics for the high-speed nascar tracks in 69. still wasn't enough that's what's really shocking now you'll notice that the grill is basically straight off a dodge coronet and then they took that buttress window like you said they made a flush in the back to get rid of that vacuum that occurs right over the trunk of a car at high speeds and they still had to go back to the drawing board and of course then they came up with the dodge daytona right for which we still thanked them that is the new most beautiful charger i've ever seen the last one lasted two lots yeah reserves off i can't believe they didn't sell the jamaica blue one for 200 grand with 59 000 they must be really happy with that first charger that rolled out well and i was going to say that tells you how much they love that jamaica blue card 5800 is brand new but 135 000 dollars here at mikkel kissimmee my goodness they keep on rolling in wait do you see the next one about six to go but this 1971 hemi super b is a motor trend test car and here's what tim told me about this one the guys on the assembly line were given marching orders they brought all this the line supervisors in and they said guys this is going to motor tran for their test car you better build this car right and tighten every nut and bolt and make sure that nothing is amiss on this car that's exactly what they did well they got all the right stuff for the uh road testers 426 hemi 425 horsepower torque flight automatic a34 super track pack power steering and brakes air grabber hood on and on go the options and how about that color guys butterscotch so many of these mopars are iconic for their wild colors kind of a subdued earth tone color that was starting to kind of come into fashion in the early 1970s on this one and a tan interior look at that and how about this for great stories the original owner read the test report in motor train magazine about this car and said he wanted to purchase the actual car that was used in the test took a little while but he wound up with it wow that's cool you know and tim still says this thing is rattle free it runs like crazy you guys want to get in on it you want to try it all right up frank gave him a thumbs up and he said tim said doing pretty good so far let's give it a shot 155 000 sold well in this case 155 is going to be the number super rare and now to steven's favorite car of the bunch the 1970 cougar boss 302 eliminator the most beautiful eliminator in the history of ever jk the eliminator package came out in 1969 and they dressed up the car so well and you know they were looking to make mercury and the cougar kind of an upscale mustang but with this they really went over the top performance wise you got the blacked out faux hood scoop you got the front valance and matte black as well you got the stripes down the side you got an incredible package and of course instead of grabber blue they called their color series a competition blue competition green competition orange and so forth and it works on this car i think it's really one of the finest eliminators that i've ever seen and there weren't many to start with this was mercury's version and competition for that legendary ford mustang boss 302. this shares essentially the identical drivetrain 190 to bid it's going to sell so far we've had two cars not sell one because the money wasn't there two because pam said i don't think so i don't think we want to keep this car the money's right for this right now this car is worth it and that is high dollars for a cougar 195. pre-auction estimate published in the become catalog on this car low end 100 000 bringing almost double the low estimate for the auction sale price that's about where the market should have been but you know it's driven by the excellence and the rarity of these machines sure yep 195 000 and you can book that one well you know that viper gts that sold i asked tim before the auction what would make him happy and that sold for over 10 000 more yeah yeah here is a 1971 hemi charger rt the very last 71 hemi charger built mr kramer and the very last 71 hemi selling out of the wellborn collection couldn't be a better one to have it ended with as well scott four-speed transmission a34 super track pack once again an air grabber hood terrific color combination mostly unrestored it has been repainted in the original high impact top banana that's what they called it but they retained the original striping and the interior all original as well quarter of a million first muscle car area has not been lifted yet tonight in the last minute i think a little bit reluctantly tim takes the reserve off at 295 these are his babies for 20 years yeah he has put together the best collection specifically that's tim's what alexander city alabama just about an hour and a half southeast of birmingham and this one sells for 295 000. well i might as well hold you on the phone if we're going to wait till 203. three more to go after this one leaves and let's move on to a 1978 pontiac trans am s e a y 88 gold special edition with the ws6 performance package as well john yeah on a four-speed transmission as well scott the uh special edition was available in two colors in 1978 the one that's best known of course is the black with the gold trim but you were also able to get it here in the uh y88 gold special edition package and that's what tim's got right here loaded with options including factory air conditioning power steering and brakes t-tops pretty much original cars had a little bit of work done to the interior and it has been repainted but that is the correct solar gold and yes that is crushed velour on the interior as it would have been when it was new welcome to the 1970s 42 000 going in the books 78 pontiac trans am s.e and if the next car looks familiar to millions of viewers across the country it should remember back in the day in the 70s the rockford files this is jim rockford's pontiac firebird esprit james garner drove this featured in the tv series and it was updated a number of times from 74 to 80 but not after 78 so this is the form that it was in during the 78 and beyond seasons documented with a letter of authenticity from ray claridge our friend we see him at a lot of become auctions proprietor of cinema vehicle services largest supplier of vehicles to the movie and television industry that's a 350 cubic inch pontiac exclusive engine it's got air conditioning power steering and brakes originally built as a formula version to get the updated suspension and then redressed for the television show to make it look like a more mundane playing firebird yeah because rockford was always having money trouble remember keeping uh with with that persona and his dad rocky didn't he live in a trailer on the beach or something right yeah like they would allow that now right i think i'll just set my trailer up in malibu beach father played by noah berry yes yeah very good what a great show and you know uh james garner reportedly did a lot of the stunt driving himself right oh yeah terrific driver terrific car guy throughout his career all right that one goes in the books for forty thousand dollars the rockford files firebird our final vehicle of the 24 car well-born collection run is the last one for the most a 1966 ford shelby racing transporter how about this to wind up the collection yeah this is great scott 330 cubic inch ford v8 four-speed transmission dual rear wheels surprisingly original condition what do you think this thing's a beauty this thing's a real jewel tim was working on this a week ago getting the brakes ready for this but to find a cab over that's in this kind of shape to have that kind of hearing this is a special trick i wonder if carol shelby signed this oh who knows you know if you pick up just about any book on the cobra back in the 60s that has any pictures you're likely to see at least one shot of this truck on the other transporters somewhere if we can't find his autograph i'll give you a sharpie bill and just go right carl shelton in there we're in reserve reserve is off sixty thousand dollars number of world i think he's i think he's out here you're working on the guys i just got about 20 pounds lighter because the air just went out of my head
