Meadowview, Virginia Starburst Candy and Mallo Cups

a big howdy to everybody out there it is your old pal shane simmons back again and i wouldn't do it again if i couldn't do it better or whatever the old singing is and thankfully as you all know i didn't set the bar very high to begin with so this won't be too big of a challenge anyway i'm gonna check out meta view of virginia today but i do want to thank you guys for all the comments messages i read them all saw them all and i do appreciate you guys thinking about me and uh appreciate that very much i also want to give a shout out to mr mark miller who sent a donation in to sponsor this trip and man believe me i can be bribed so i really appreciate that these trips could be expensive as anybody can probably imagine not that this one is necessarily but i do appreciate it and puts a little gas in the tank so anybody else wants to do that hit me up and i'll be glad to take your money and give you a video anyway uh we'll check out mediview and uh but i better get out of here because again this laundromat is checking me out like he's gonna come out here punch me in the face or something i don't know what's going on with that but anyway i'm gonna hit the trail and get out back on the road and appreciate you guys and also want to give a shout out to malo cobb uh they gave me a free t-shirt and they also gave me this outstanding physique that you can see so if you get no rest have a lot of stress in your life eat terribly and eat plenty of mellow cups you can have a body like this too so you know if you work really hard and you're lucky and you know god smiles on you so anyway let's get on the road we'll check out many of you and i will see you in a little bit just for posterity there's the uh laundromat in case i get killed i must have looked at the guy's girlfriend too long or something who knows sue me i think i could take him anyway i don't know actually maybe those mellow cups have caught up with me anyway let's get on the road one of you is in washington county and it's got a population just a shade under a thousand it used to be a uh railroad community pretty big until about the 1950s that kind of slacked off and uh not a whole lot happens down here i used to manage well i was a district manager for bbt bank and they had a branch will probably come up on in here in just a few minutes and uh had a branch that was robbed they had an armed robbery and uh god it was a dramatic event guys leaped over the counter and oddly enough they caught them by a guy dropped to starburst actually there's meadowview elementary school on the left i get carried away talking and forget to point down to landmark but that's elementary school but anyway these guys there was a i think it was a father and son maybe some kind of weird connection family connection between the two and they went and fled up the hill well the guy spit out candy or spat out i don't know if that's even a word and um they found it the police traced it down and by dna they uh they caught the guy it's he had this starburst was sweet jokingly and it's a starburst bandit and candyman and all kinds of nicknames for him after that but very traumatic event for my tellers at the time i'll never forget that getting the word and i'd just been there i just left i just missed the whole drama because and i had a bad habit of that when i went to the bank there's like three or four of my branches got robbed and as always within a few little while after i'd left they've been there there's a old holst it's a holston furniture company now it looks like it used to be an old school probably thank you so much i know about landmarks most obviously the nose on your face that's what that was but anyway there's the old branch i don't know what it is now it looks like it's southwest virginia community health services but that used to be the bb t bank i went into that was robbed i said it used to be a railroad community this place was first founded in the late 1700s i'll go down this downtown area but there is that's kind of a neat thing it's primarily farming now residential rural residential bicycle hanging from that building that's kind of cool so here we are at the meadowview farmers guild it's really neat meadowview health clinic and up here we see the old railroad station and it's called flip it decor and more now so give you another view of it this is a really cool sleepy little town apparently the fire station is some of these older buildings was just super neat it would be a good little place for bread and back there to bed and breakfast it's easy for me to say take another sweep back down that way first it's such a cool little store here in the meadowview farmer's yard advertising honey and eggs and the harvest table restaurant as well that is uh if memory serves that's owned by barbara kingsolver which is from i think i'm pronouncing her name ryan which is an author that lives here locally she's fairly well known her husband is stephen hop who was a professor at emory henry i had him for about a week and i dropped that class so fast and make your head spin i didn't even stay i finally made it through one class but that's a story for another day but just a sleepy little town here in appalachia man i just love it down here though it's beautiful territory it's like all these little farms and communities and you can just tell that this was once the quintessential small town appalachia anything makes you throw back to mayberry take a little ride down the road and then we'll call it a day like a lot of towns just really had not much of anything to do with coal this was more of a livestock type stop for the railroad and there's a little stretch down this way that heads back toward abbington so give you a little look see that you can get back on i-81 and that my friends is a little look at meadowview i hope you enjoyed that and i'll be back on the road again shortly for you thanks for watching again appreciate you
