Matt Damon and Christian Bale get real about weight loss, Batman vs. Bourne and more [extended]

the racing scenes are just I popping you guys are both excellent so congrats thank you it's not just a story about this historical or racing triumph I think at its heart it's really about this deep bond that is formed between your two characters amid some very challenging circumstances yeah two friends who were obsessed with you know the same thing have a common purpose two very strong minded individuals who don't always agree on how to get something done whatever you know enduring respect for each other yeah how well did you guys know each other prior to this collaboration well Markham pads across periodically over the years but but but that's kind of it like we knew each other but then we'd never had the chance to work together that kind of parallel is these two characters in the story they they sort of they knew each other from from the auto industry before they sort of came together to take on this race yeah I mean they they they had a whole history before they before they kind of came together to do this but but we we were kind of limited to kind of various events and and you know were like like cocktail parties and stuff like that we're gonna find ourselves in the corner for a minute or two you know yeah so you're saying there could be a prequel to this because they did have they did have a good amount of backstory yeah yeah there could mean that but this is the this is the point where they're the sort of planets were pretty cool but this is the point where their lives were changing both of their lives were at this but at this kind of important kind of pivotal moment so you guys as you mentioned you know saw each other sort of in passing but I think you did almost work together at one point were you we've cast in The Dark Knight at some point it was I yeah I really role I thought you were gonna play Harvey day one point isn't that true oh oh now you're reminding me I remember like he's calling me about that like a long time but no I but I was in the middle of doing something but maybe maybe I don't think I was ever offered it really offered it though and I don't think I think they have spread they were probably a group of names they were talking about and Heath might have called to ask if I was busy or something I remember I don't think it was serious it was what was that important to you well it wasn't I mean I was like it's Christian still Batman it wasn't like all the other films that you offered then I picked up afterwards either no I'm just glad that now it has this one the Lord over you it was more of a feeling of the situation itself I think so yeah yeah well we talked we talked about that the friendship that's entailed in this story the racing is indeed kick-ass how much driving did you guys actually get to do as much as they'd let us without ruining without our ruining the movie mmm sometimes a little bit more than they last but that was always fun to just go off and go yeah but it's wasted film because we just can't drive as well as the professional drivers who you know make the race the race is some of the best races I've ever seen on film yeah do you know I cut you know how fast you got clocked at did you to use did you track your personal felt like we were going at 230 miles an hour but we were probably like edging 70 we furnish errands purposes I don't think we ever went faster than 35 yes did you guys to get to keep any of the cards no it doesn't work like that like hey great job I doesn't see 40 I didn't see it arriving at the premiere last night some fancy cards but they did they yeah those were beautiful day that was a that was a bit of a tease too because they can bake the called and said would you like to pull up in the Cobra and we went yeah of course that'd be amazing and they go cuz we can stage them in a parking lot around you know so we figured we at least get you know a one-block kind of run where we could maybe you know up a little bit maybe find second gear no no it was like out the gate through it through a parking lot through an alley like went right up to the parents like we didn't even get our foot off the all the way off the clutch you know I'm like closed off Hollywood Boulevard it's not a closed I was like we're missing a real opportunity here I think actually I mean to the stunt guys did say that we were regularly gonna about hundred and twenty right that was yeah that was kind of the knack to speed okay and then they go quick oh that's pretty fast when they go the amateurs off the track yet when signing on to a film like this alright how much are you guys considering sort of the track record of the genre it's a storied one you know I think there's a film that definitely aspires to and succeeds at being one of those inspirational sports drama that will like bring the manliest man to tears yeah I don't I didn't think of it in terms of its place in the genre I I on the contrary cuz I'm not really a car guy that's what I thought this augurs well for us if I'm not a car guy and I'd like to script this much because I think it transcends that and it's and you know I think if you just set out to make a car movie then that's probably all you'll end up with and this I think was a is gonna be really enjoyable to people who aren't who aren't car people mmm-hmm within the Canon though do you guys have like that one inspirational sports drama that will just will bring you to tears every time I mean Rocky is probably still one that works yeah sure just said yeah great but it's a but it wasn't a boxing movie right it doesn't it feels like more than that right right Matt at what point did it occur to you that this would amazingly be the second Carroll that you've played in your career it didn't occur to me till somebody said that to me last night does anybody ask you that I said no I played I did there's a TV show which I'm you you Christian lives on the moon there's a TV show he will you will not have heard of a TV who's not ignorant to me it's just heard of it Wow it's it whoa it's oblivion no no it's okay like in kind of so there's a TV show called 30 rock that Tina Fey did did you no longer on TV but I was really really funny yeah and I did a little 4 episode run playing a pilot named named Carol Carol Burnett but it was spelled Carol Burnett all right but he pronounced it Carol Burnett yes with two L's I think exactly who's to ask me mr. Velas we've got to talk about the wrestling scene in this movie this is this has to be my favorite moment how much of that was choreographed and how much of that was just you guys letting your instincts take over that was gonna kill asleep or excellent trick was around the honey crazy the wrestler but we see no or film I really like me silly fighting with my family oh yeah this English wrestling family but yet a true story yep yeah very good written is directed by Stephen Burkett yeah oh really excellent movie yeah that's great oh good I saw him there too I didn't know I know I complimented him then you know to you name and I went but I don't know what you're talking about all right now I got a son fighting a female wrestler named Paige Paige she goes my page I did some q and A's with her when they when it opened this weekend and she was gotten a fight with an audience member that's awesome it was pretty it was pretty intense but yes our that doesn't even begin to match our wrestling scene that's what you were getting to yes yeah yeah you could see all those years of honing the craft of stunt fighting that got from born and I got from Batman Larry is realized dream thing I looked at that and said that's what it was all for yeah you know all those dollars weeks and months away from the kids yeah I'm your kids here welcome hit me around the head with Wonder Bread there's there's food involved I think there was some nipple twisting involved it's there was intense fights it's definitely a macho fight but I love it because it really does it feels like a ship in the dynamic between these characters it feels like the moment they truly bond it feels like they just had to be out of each other to truly become friends yeah well it really beat the right it's saying that they don't really want to hurt each other we're guilty every time I see her yeah but it's that enviable friendship where they can have that happen I mean it does just get them closer yeah it doesn't send them off in different directions you know because they both know they're furiously passionate about the same thing you know and therefore they care a lot about how he's done yeah it's like I mean it's like brothers fighting each other other night 17 months apart Irish twins we would beat the crap out of each other but like never to the point where we would seriously hurt no that's we've talked about that a lot when we talk about that fight it's like there's that it's you and to it this like invisible line and you kind of both know what it is and you don't really want to cross that line and when you do like there's a moment where I throw a punch and he holds the trash can lid and I hit the trashcan the exact you okay but we would've stopped if he got no that bloody huh okay so this tree that news forum and then right exactly exactly how many times on this press tour have you been asked who would win in a fight between Batman and born about children which is weird cuz the answer is so obvious yeah well now that you've had time to workshop the answer what is it I like to make fun of my questions before I ask them what's that no no we answer it differently every time I think I would like to see Jason Bourne and Batman on the same side mmm fighting crying together and which Batman do you want to see me and Affleck fight each other or me and Christian they're all yeah all are the different or it's like clearly we are assigned to them and then right we got Robert Paul isn't different day out how would you say all of the different bat men all of the different Batman's I think Batman I think it's like XD sounds bad but a bit I mean Batman so you know I'd say Batman I want to see born versus all the Batman one of us together yes you know Adam West hearing those demo tapes no no no certainly not the Jim that's not how we want to bring it out Christian I remember when we talked for advice you said that I think you it sounded like you would hit a breaking point with this sort of dramatical weight gain and weight losses that you've done over the years but you had to beautician some pretty pounds for this one I think but that was necessary so that I didn't die so it was a killing two birds with one stone I've got to lose the way and be able to fit into a gt40 yeah are you you think you're gonna do less of that going for it are you worried about sort of like the you know what sort of what those two mentality look yeah fluctuations can do for any long term 5:45 now beginning to actually worry about it yeah don't worry about it just think about it mmm yeah do you think they also still what Gary was able to do gary oldman was able to do and as Churchill and so you know where's before I would laugh when people went can't you just sort of put on a suit it's like oh that's exactly how he did it do you think Dick Cheney ever saw a vice I don't know he ever did I yeah I'm not sure if he ever did he didn't he did pass along a message to me whatsoever I guess I saw the movie as amazing Matt what is the most dramatical weight loss or gain that you've taken out for a role when I was younger I lost a bunch of weight for a movie I got down into the hundred and 30s for four which is for me that's a lot because I'm I probably walk around around 190 so and that was a lot and it just was and like it's funny you could we were talking earlier about it we know nutritionists like I didn't have anybody help me I actually had a guy help me who was a bodybuilder and he gave me his how they cut for the last three weeks before a competition and I did it for almost four months which was really weird I ended up on medication and stuff it was a stupid thing to do because I kind of messed up all my systems and everything was kind of off and then when I went and when I finished I just started eating cuz it was in flashback I wanted to be skinned so there was I had three weeks to put them as much weight back on as I could so I just started eating whatever I wanted and it was like it was a disaster yeah it's not as fun as it sounds from everything oh no that's why I was so interested when I saw Christian and how he did it I mean he's talking 70 pounds which is I mean that's that's all that's just so much weight to go from 240 to 170 you know I was really interested to know how he did I think also right I mean I don't know I worry about this becoming a regular conversation because it isn't healthy for people to do that you know right it becomes some kind of a marker of commitment whether your craft or whatever and it was never you know I never viewed it as that I just sort of went oh I think I have to do this you know whatever but you know yeah what I worry when it becomes sort of a marker of oh how committed are you to a role how much did you lose and eventually there'll be some tragedy because of this you know it should be an anomaly yeah and you go for the essence of a character and you should and you're right about Gary right you look at what happened in the darkest hour I mean he is absolutely brilliant in that movie and you can I mean he's brilliant in that movie and so that's you know let that be another kind of object lesson in ways you can go about it yeah and he did so he said to me didn't put on a pound Yeah right there you go I always enjoy your talking you guys so much really appreciate your time
