all right let's come back together everybody so excited to study God's word with you tonight if you have your Bible with you turn with me to the Gospel of Matthew Matthew chapter five we're gonna look at verses 17 through 20 tonight the title of my message I worked real hard on this one okay the be IB le why because that's the book for me anyone else can you get a witness there amen and amen that's right can't wait to study let's pray and ask Lord's blessing over our time father we thank you so much for this privilege that we have to study your word right now and we pray father God that in us you will find hearts that are a humble that are hungry and desiring all that you have for us Lord we thank you that you've given us your word we thank you that you've given us the Holy Spirit so that we may live according to your word and we pray father God that you will open our eyes and empower us and motivate us father that you'd be glorified through us we pray in Jesus name and all of God's people said amen and amen hey this week was a special week in the DAAD home the week before our little girl Melina she's five years old was over at a friend's house and she began riding a bike and you might be thinking well she's five years old she should be riding a bike by now some kids right I'm really young well she never really kind of got into it at all I mean she had her little you know little three wheelers and whatnot but it wasn't really her thing but then she's with a bunch of other kids and all of a sudden it became her thing so how do you know our thinking you know what let's go get her a Walmart special you know let's go over there and and buy a bike and get her the training wheels and so we get out there and I said now I want to teach you honey the rules of the road because you know riding a bike is not just about pedaling it's also about stopping right and I was noticing that she was developing a bad habit because she wasn't using the brake to stop she was using her toe and you know where that's gonna go right and and she would like stop and it would take like 15 feet to stop you know and those brand new shoes weren't looking so brand new afterwards and so I began to work with her and I just sat down I said honey I want you to I need to have you listen to what I'm saying right here okay daddy loves you and it's not only important that you learn how to pedal it's really important that you learn how to stop so let's practice using the brake I did this with my 16 year old while driving a car as well okay and the funny thing is is she was going up and down the sidewalk and I would say break and you know what she do she put her feet down brake she'd put her feet down okay honey you need to understand what I say brake push back on the pedal and so then she started to get it but we had to go over and over cuz she had to break that bad habit you know but I wanted her to know she hadn't done anything wrong I just love her and I don't want to see anything to happen to her you know our Father in heaven has given us his inspired in arrant word why so that we may know the rules of the road or the rules of life why because he loves us so much and in Matthew chapter 5 verses 17 through 20 Jesus declared his view of the law and the prophets along with his relationship to it and then he goes on to summarize the relationship true disciples of Jesus should have with the law and the prophets as citizens of heaven and what I want to do tonight is discover the nature of both relationships so that we may properly live by the be IB le let's pick it up in verse 17 do not think Jesus said that I came to abolish the law or the prophets I did not come to abolish but to fulfill for truly I say to you until heaven and earth pass away not the smallest letter or drogue shall pass from the law until all is accomplished whoever then annul 'he's one of the least of these Commandments and teaches others to do the same shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven but whoever keeps and teaches them he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven for I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees you will not enter the kingdom of heaven now as we've been making a way through the Gospel of Matthew we noticed in the first first twelve verses of Matthew five that Jesus told those who were gathered around him what it means to be his disciple the characteristics that he expects to see from his followers and these are called the Beatitudes they're beautiful attitudes attitudes which result from God's work in the heart of each person who surrendered their will who's declared their allegiance who's placed their faith in his son our Savior Jesus Christ you see God's blessings rests upon each person who embodies what Jesus taught in these verses last week we noted that Jesus gave us two word pictures which spell out the impact a person will have on those around them as light and salt in a fallen world now what Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount was radical and it would have caused those around him to actually question his views on the law and the prophets anticipating their response Jesus confronted their questions and ultimately declared that his teaching was the way God had always intended it to be and the first thing that we see here regards to Jesus and his view on the law and the prophets is this Jesus came to fulfill the law and the prophets Jesus came to fulfill the law and the prophets verse 17 jesus said do not think that I came to abolish the law or the prophets I did not come to abolish but to fulfill and here we see in verse 17 this was Jesus mission he said do not think which means do not suppose don't presume don't assume or imagine modern-day matthew dodd translation don't go there pals you see jesus warned against entertaining the thought that he came to abolish the law he came to fulfill it and that word fulfill means to complete or to bring to its desired end this means that Jesus would bring into being or reality all that God had commanded and promised it also means that Jesus not only completed the law he transcends the law and I'll explain more of that here in a moment now I want us to get our hands around the idea of the scope of what Jesus came to do when we talk about him fulfilling the law and completing the law of the prophets what does that mean you know there are 248 commands and 365 prohibitions for a total of 613 commandments in the law and Jesus came to perfectly fulfill all of it and there are hundreds of Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament and Jesus fulfilled over 350 of them during his first Advent now how did Jesus fulfill the law and the prophets well he perfectly fulfilled the law by living a sinless life 2nd Corinthians 5:17 the Apostle Paul said he made him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf that we might become the righteousness of God in him Jesus knew no sin but he identified with sinful heart in humanity and the penalty that we deserve came upon him why so that all who placed their faith in him for salvation shall not suffer an eternity apart from Christ but have the righteousness of Christ and dwell with God forever Jesus death fulfilled also prophecy when he died on the cross for our sin Isaiah 53 verses 5 and 6 say this but and by the way this is 700 years before Christ was crucified but he was pierced through for our transgressions he was crushed for our iniquities the chastening for our well-being fell upon him and by his scourging we are healed all of us like sheep have gone astray each of us has turned to his own way but the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on him many you know that pastor rich and I had the privilege of going to Israel into February 1st of March of this year and we had just a great time and I want to encourage you when pastor rich has the opportunity here soon to take another trip to Israel please sign up our pastor who's here tonight great to have him here by the way he knows Israel and you will be so blessed to go on a tour with him I tell you what so we were there in Israel had a marvelous time and one of the things that we got a chance to experience was to celebrate the the Sabbath with a rabbi they wanted to introduce us to the culture that way and so we are there all the pastors about 30 of us in there they're a little flat there and the family was so gracious and they kind of explained the Shabbat to us and then afterwards the rabbi said you know what I want you to feel free to ask me questions and I'll ask you questions and everything was going really well and then pastor rich asked a question about Isaiah 53 and he was very very gracious and kind but he this question he said what do you believe is the relationship between Messiah and the suffering servant of Isaiah 53 we just read it right there at that moment there was like this pregnant pause of pregnant pauses I've never heard before and I'm thinking to myself this has been a great great dinner waiter can I get my ticket right now because things were getting a little bit awkward at that point and I felt so bad the rabbi you can see him searching for an answer and pastor rich was so gracious but but he's searching for an answer and finally he came to this conclusion this answer that there are basically according to some Jewish teachings two messiahs one who would suffer Isaiah 53 and one who would be victorious now is there any problem with that yes the bibl ii you see the scripture makes it very clear the same Messiah of Isaiah 53 who suffered is the one who will also be raised from the dead and pastor rich could have pressed the point but he let that one go and the rabbi knew where he was going because there's other scriptures that speak of this victorious one who would be raised from the dead for instance Psalm 16 verse 10 Jesus here fulfills prophecy when he was raised from the dead for you will not abandon my soul to Sheol nor will you allow your Holy One to undergo decay you see we don't have time to go through it tonight but the entire Old Testament points forward to Jesus and what he would accomplish through his life and ministry the sacrifices the the burnt offerings the sin offerings the grain offerings they all point to Jesus Christ the feast the Passover Pentecost the Day of Atonement it all points to Jesus Christ the priesthood even there Gorman's point to Jesus Christ then you have the stories like Jonah and the great fish and the typology --zz Moses Joshua they all point to Jesus and Jesus perfectly fulfills it all in fact he's superior to it all Hebrews chapter 8 verses six of seven says this but now he has obtained a more excellent ministry by as much as he is the also the mediator of a better covenant which has been enacted on better promises for if the first covenant had been faultless there would have been no occasion sought for a second you see there needed to be a new covenant because the Old Covenant wasn't going to do what we needed to have it do the next thing we see here is that Jesus will fulfill every detail as God intended not just a little bit here a little bit there every single detail our Savior will completely and perfectly fulfill he says in verse 18 for truly I say to you now this was a formula used only by Jesus and not other teachers of his day matthew recorded this formula 31 times it's recorded for the first time right here and it's similar to when an Old Testament prophet would say thus saith the Lord this would alert the listener to pay attention because what followed was of great importance now the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet is the letter Y owed and it would be like the dot on our lowercase I in English and the smallest stroke which the Hebrews would call the tittle that is like the addition of an angled line to the capital P which would give you what a capital R right so the smallest letter or stroke is important because even a small chain can change the meaning of a word is it the Apostle Paul or the Apostle Rahl you see where I'm going here is it pastor rich or pastor pitch okay you see what I'm talking about here so so very important and Jesus declared that even the smallest detail of God's Word will be fulfilled because if one word failed God would be proved a liar and unable to keep his promises numbers 23 tells us though in verse 19 that God doesn't lie and he always keeps his promises God is not man that he should lie nor a son of man that he should repent has God said and will he not do it or has he spoken and will he not make it good man we can just rest in knowing that our Father in Heaven when he makes a promise he will always fulfill it perfectly on time for his people those who put their hope in him are never ever put to shame aren't you glad though that God's not like us on that one because I know we all make promises right we all want to keep our word but there's some times when we fall short and we're trying to teach our daughter Melina to be a woman who keeps her word we try to keep her our word as well but my daughter just this week I'm just gonna be really transparent me really honest with you she called me up on this this week I didn't see this one coming everyone knows that I have a sweet tooth okay I love chocolate add a little bit of peanut butter add a little bit of nuts caramel hey you got a Snickers bar isn't that a winner I tell you what and I have one bite and you know what I just want to have another and another and another and I don't know when I said this and she must have heard it but I said you know what I'm done with chocolate I can't do it anymore so my daughter this week comes up to me after I just eaten some chocolate and she says to me dad dad you said you weren't gonna have chocolate anymore but I knew you loved sweets so much you couldn't resist oh my Oh would you like a little bit of pepper with that salt you know oh my word and I'm thinking I need to be a man of my word she's watching she's watching I want to be like my Heavenly Father that when I speak I will do what I've promised to do aren't you glad God's not like us he always keeps his word aren't you glad I sure AM but I want to be a man of the word Jesus goes on to say heaven and earth will pass away but not until all of God's Word is accomplished now when will Jesus fulfill the law this is a very important phrase like to grasp he already did when he died on the cross at Calvary did you catch that when was the law fulfilled when Jesus Christ died on the cross at Calvary John 19 verse 30 when Jesus therefore had received the sour wine he said it is finished and he bowed his head and he gave up his spirit at that moment when he died on the cross he said it is finished to tell us died which means paid in full he paid the price for our sin completely and the entire law was fulfilled that moment what does Jesus death mean for a person who wants to be a disciple it means the requirements of the law that Jesus perfectly kept are now applied to that person's life who placed their faith in him so it's as if they have kept the law that means because Jesus perfectly kept the Sabbath those who are in Christ it's if weak perfectly kept the Sabbath it's as if we've perfectly kept the law why because we're in Christ and all his righteousness is now extended to us by faith and that's why the Apostle Paul said in Romans chapter 8 verses three and four for what the law could not do weak as it was through the flesh God did sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin he condemned sin in the flesh so that the requirement of the law might be fulfilled see that might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the spirit and that's why the Apostle Paul said in Romans 10 verse 4 for Christ is the end of the law of righteousness to everyone who believes brothers and sisters this is good news this is why Paul would go on to say there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus the moment a person places his or her faith in Christ all the benefits of what Christ has accomplished is now imputed to that person so we have a righteous standing before God by faith he did it all now when will the remaining Messianic prophecies be fulfilled when Jesus Christ returns revelation 22 verse 12 behold I am coming quickly and my reward is with me jesus said to render to every man according to what he has done so Jesus is coming back and when he comes back he's going to establish his kingdom there will be the new heaven and the new earth and you know what we will be with God for all eternity and it will be done in terms of the Messianic prophecies so Jesus did not oppose the law rather he opposed the illegitimate interpretations of the law that stressed regulation rather than heart transformation now let's shift we focus on the the role and the relation ship that Jesus had with the law and the prophets what about his disciples I want to capture verses 19 and 20 this way then I believe God wants every single one of us to be a great disciple of Jesus Christ I'm just gonna call it out for what it is God wants you and me to be great the question is how do we get there verse 19 jesus said whoever then anoles one of the least of these Commandments and teaches others to do the same he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven but whoever keeps and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven here we see that a great disciple keeps God's word I remember when I was very young in the faith I'm blessed to be a man who had mentors who came alongside me encouraged me in Christ I had this one man in particular Steve was a great man looked like a big Norwegian a Viking this is big big full of a man and every time I would come up to him and say hey Steve what do you think about this you know what he would say he would ask a question what does the Bible say what does the Bible say every it got to the point where I knew exactly what he was gonna say every time I asked him a question but what was he doing he was getting me into the Word of God because the Word of God is the road map for life I'm so grateful and I believe that was one of the reasons why God led me to Calvary Chapel I remember hearing Pastor Chuck Smith on the radio for the first time chapter by chapter verse by verse teaching through the entire counsel of God's Word and something just resonated within my heart I need this I need the Word of God I want to be associated with something like this where the Word of God is being taught chapter by chapter verse by verse it's why I'm here at Calvary Chapel Hillsboro I heard pastor rich teach chapter by chapter verse by verse we need the Word of God it's the road map for life now back in the day excuse me the Jewish teachers actually listed the least and greatest Commandments the greatest commandment you know this one Deuteronomy 6:5 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your soul and with all your might but you might not know what they've listed as the least commandment it's Deuteronomy 22 verses 6 and 7 look at this if you happen to come upon a bird's nest along the way excuse me in any tree or on the ground with young ones or eggs and the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs you shall not take the mother with the young you shall certainly let the mother go but the young you may take for yourself in order that it may be well with you and that you may prolong your days there's the least commandment according to the Jewish Pharisees scribes and teachers so the Jews actually thought that they could keep either one and you know what by keeping them they would have eternal life now the reward are the word annul by the way means to be relaxed or to set aside or to teach against and so Jesus is declaring here that a great disciple in the kingdom of heaven will keep even the least of the commandments and teach others to do likewise because God is the one who gave the command conversely the person who sets aside the commands and teaches others to do the same will be called the least now I want to make it clear here Jesus is not talking about salvation or the loss of it because he said the Great and the least are in the kingdom of heaven here rather he's talking about a disciple standing or status in the kingdom of heaven similar to the way Paul said that Christians will receive rewards as they stand before the Bema seat of Christ 1st Corinthians chapter 3 12 through 15 Paul says now if any man builds on the foundation with gold silver precious stones wood hay straw each man's work will become evident for the day will show it but because it is revealed with fire and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work if any man's work which he has built on it remains he will receive a reward if any man's work is burned up he will suffer loss but he himself will be saved yet as through fire so this is not an issue of who saved not saved it's an issue of standing every person is going to stand before the Lord and the question will be what did you do with your saved life and if you live for the glory of God you will have reward if not you will suffer loss now I know you might be wondering though I thought Christians aren't under the law because Christ fulfilled the law are you saying that Christians are still under the law I'm so glad you asked because the next verse verse 20 sheds light on all of this and makes it clear that we are not saved by the law nor are we under the law look at this jesus said for I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees you will not enter the kingdom of heaven well what does Jesus talking about here Jesus Christ requires a deeper righteousness did you get that Jesus is seeking desiring expecting a deeper righteousness that is the only way anyone will ever make it to heaven you see the scribes were professional students and teachers of the law the Pharisees were devoted to the scrupulous observance of both the Old Testament law and the developing traditions and it was commonly believed that the scribes and Pharisees were the standards of holiness in that day if anyone was going to go to heaven or could go to heaven or should go to heaven it was them and then Jesus comes onto the scene and declares that the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees was not good enough why because God looks at the heart God looks at the heart not the external God looks at the heart remember the anointing of David to be king God called Samuel to go to the house of Jesse to anoint the next king because Saul had failed and so all the sons of Jesse - one stand before Samuel the Prophet and he sees the oldest son head taller than everyone else he says surely the Lord's anointed is before me and what does God say to Samuel verse seven God sees not as man sees for man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart and so when God was looking at the scribes and Pharisees what did he see Jesus made it clear in Matthew 23 27 through 28 woe to you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites for you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness so you too outwardly appear righteous to men but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness so what's Jesus doing then in verse 20 I believe he's using the law as God intended it to be used you see the law declares that if we break just one command that were guilty of breaking all of it James chapter 2 verse 10 for whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point he has become guilty of all there is a proper use for the law and when we have it properly used it reveals something it reveals our need for a savior you see we are not justified by our good works we're justified by faith alone in Jesus Christ and that's why Paul said in Galatians 3:24 look at this therefore the law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ that we may be justified by faith what does the law do the law says don't do this we do it and we're condemned well then how can I be right before God I need a Savior the law is a tutor that leads me to salvation leads me to righteousness a deeper righteousness that's created in us through faith in Jesus Christ now Jesus did for us then what the law could never do it could never make us righteous before God it just points out the problem it just reveals the sin that we have committed the sin nature that's in our hearts but it never fixes anything and that's why God sent His Son Jesus Christ Romans 3 21 and 22 but now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made manifest being witnessed by the law and the prophets even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe you see and this is so important because I came from a Roman Catholic background and you know what is all about rules and regulations if I just did this enough if I just if I just read the Bible enough if I just did that enough somehow God might be pleased and maybe you're like me I felt frustrated because I always felt like no matter what I did it was never ever good enough well that is the truth the law points us to our need for a savior and for a deeper righteousness you see external righteousness is not true righteousness God wants something deeper it's the kind of righteousness that comes a person is poor in spirit and they know that they don't deserve God's grace but God's wrath it's the kind of righteousness that results in a changed heart because they place their faith in Jesus Christ and are called the sons of God that person is no longer governed by an external law because God writes his law on their hearts no longer do we have an external law governing us judging us God does something in us that transforms us from the inside out Jeremiah 31 verse 31 and 33 and 34 behold the days are coming declares the Lord when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah I will put my law within them and on their heart I will write it and I will be their God and they shall be my people they will not teach again each man his neighbor and each man his brother say no the Lord for they will all know me from the least of them to the greatest of them declares the Lord for I will forgive their iniquity and their sin I will remember no more and then at the moment of salvation God places his spirit within us so that we're empowered and motivated to walk in his ways again in the Old Testament Ezekiel writes Ezekiel 36 26 and 27 moreover I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you and I will remove the hardest stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh I will put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes and you will be careful to observe my ordinances well how do we know you and I are walking in God's ways by keeping the Sabbath in observing feasts rules regulations listen to the words of the Apostle Paul in Colossians 2:16 and 17 and verse 23 therefore no one is to act as judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or sabbath things which are a mere shadow of what is to come but the substance belongs to christ these matters which have to be sure the appearance of wisdom and self-made religion and self-made abasement on severe treatment of the body but are of no value against fleshly indulgence the answer's no those things don't make me right well then how do I know we're walking in the spirit look for faith pastor rich you got to hear his message from this morning wonderful message about faith it's about faith how do I know God's Spirit is moving look for faith Galatians 2:20 and 21 Paul says I have been crucified with Christ and it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself up for me I do not nullify the grace of God for if righteousness comes through the law then Christ died needlessly how does Paul live by faith complete abandonment I'm gonna trust you Lord because I know you promise that those who put their hope in you will never be disappointed so I'm gonna run this life in such a way that honors and pleases you by faith I would also add to that look for love jesus said in John 14 verse 15 if you love me you will keep my Commandments John 13 verse 34 and 35 it's not in your notes no extra charge Jesus says a new commandment that I give to you that you love one another even as I love you so you should also love one another by doing so you will be communicating to the world this is Matthew's paraphrase here that your disciples of mine that's why Paul said in Romans after 13 verses 8 and 10 own nothing to anyone except love to one another for he who loves his neighbour has fulfilled the law love does no wrong to a neighbor therefore love is the fulfillment of the law God has done it all and we have the roadmap his word I remember newly born again believer I left the Roman Catholic Church I was going to New Life Center up in Everett Washington a Foursquare Church pastor Tom Ferguson was there and that man loved God's Word he's now gone home to be with Jesus and I'll never forget I was sitting up in the balcony and he gave a message about falling in love with God's Word and I've shared this with you before I struggle with dyslexia and reading has never been a strong point for me at all and so back in the day I wanted to be in the word but it didn't make sense to me but I remember him giving a message about falling in love with God's Word and he gave an invitation at the end I tell you what I had both hands raised Lord I want to know your word I want to be changed by your word and all of a sudden God began to do a work in my life as I responded to the invitation I need more of God's Word why because the Word of God will always bring you back to faith not law the Word of God will always bring you back to love amen and that's where it's at you see God when we're in the word he's gonna do a work within us by his Spirit and all of a sudden even our ambitions our motivations change notice what the Apostle Paul said in second Corinthians 5 verses 9 and 10 and 14 and 15 therefore we also have as our ambition whether at home or absent to be pleasing to him how do we do that Hebrews 11 says it's impossible to please God except by faith faith comes through for we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ so that each one may be recompense for his deeds in the body according to what he has done whether good or bad look at this now we see love for the love of Christ controls us having concluded thus this that one died for all therefore all died and he died for all so that we might no longer live for themselves but live for him who died and rose again on their behalf as I closed tonight what's your ambition maybe you're like me I want more of the B ible amen I want more of God's love I want more faith I want to be pleasing to him in every way I that's my ambition is it yours if so will you please join me as I pray father I thank you so much for this time in your word I thank you Father that your word makes it clear how we can have a relationship with you and for all that we have in Jesus Christ and I pray father God right now with eyes closed heads bowed that you'd move in our hearts that you would be our ambition that we would want to be great that we would want to hear you say well done my good and faithful servant father even now move in our hearts may your word have a greater place in it may faith have a greater place and it may love have a greater place in it all evidence that your spirit is moving in us Church if you're in agreement with that you're saying I want to be pleasing to the Lord I want it as my ambition to please him I want the love of Christ to control me I want the word of God to have a greater place in my life would you just raise your hand and just say that to the Lord Lord I need more of you father I raised my hands to bring about that change by your spirit according to your word in Jesus name and all of God's people said amen can we give
