When I was young I had to bike to school for about 40 minutes. I had a Discman and about 3 cd’s. “Yourself or someone like you” was one of them. So this is the sound of my youth.
I fuckin’ love MB20. I’ve seen them a couple times in the past few years and they still kill it. They stick to their sound, play everyone’s favorite, and look like they still genuinely enjoy their music and what they do.
My future gf/wife at the time was listening to this song around the time we were still just friends (we shared an apartment with a mutual friend). She was feeling down, I nervously walked in to cheer her up, and that was the beginning of our wonderful relationship. I was shy as can be but, its crazy how the different ways music can bring people together.
My mom was a big Matchbox Twenty fan. I have such fond memories of her driving my sister and I to soccer practice in the summer with Rob Thomas playing on the radio. Such nostalgia for me.
Yourself or something like you blew up my sophomore year in high school. It wasn’t until years later that the lyrics to the whole album seems like it was speaking to my soul. I’m 37 about to be 38. Last august matchbox 20 was supposed to have a concert near me. I was going to take my little cousin as her mother loved this album and it would be a great way to help honor her memory and the sadness she carried with her until she past in 2015 but then covid happened.
