are hard [Dean Page] Hello class of 2020. Wherever you are in
the galaxy, greetings to you, your friends your family as well as all the students
staff, faculty, and others who are joining us today. What a big day. We've all been
looking forward to this for a long time. Now normally I'd be greeting you from
the Hale gallery or our traditional really non-traditional match day
celebration here at the Lerner College of Medicine if you've never been to
match day here you have no idea what it's like. It's a celebration. It's a
party. There's a skit. We are celebrating in a way that's uniquely ours last year
there were even a couple people in tutus. Now, we take professionalism
seriously here. We are serious about the fact that we are physicians at the same
time one of the things I like about our culture here, even with our culture of
professionalism, is that we don't have to take ourselves too seriously. So you
might have been wondering how can we possibly capture the essence of a
Larner College of Medicine Match Celebration here in the era of COVID-19
and social distancing. Well, so did we. As it turns out the class of 2020 had
already chosen a space mission theme and we decided to roll with that. I want to
thank the members of the technical services team, the office of medical
student education, and the medical communications team all of whom have put
their hearts into putting this together in a way that's completely different
from any other time. Despite all our efforts, despite our rehearsals,
please understand and bear with us if we have a technical glitch or two today. Now,
before I start I need to recognize that these are
trying times for all of us. We can't help but think of those who are sick right
now those who are on the front lines of caring for them, the family, the friends,
all of us are wondering what comes next. I can't minimize this serious situation.
On the other hand, this is Match Day and for a little while today let's put all
those other troubles aside. It's time to acknowledge and celebrate the
accomplishments of the class of 2020. We owe this to them their friends and their
families. So we'll still have a skit and we're still going to have fun, so welcome
space travelers to this little corner of the universe, our Mission Control. We
built this so that we can share the news and celebrate with one another today. For
the class of 2020 this is a big day for you and it's a big day for all of us who
played a role in getting you to this point. I along with all of us loved the
practice of medicine and are dedicated to our profession as we know you are.
Your future patients are out there waiting for you and we know you will be
ready to care for them. I know I speak for the faculty staff and students of
the college when I say we wish you the absolute best as you take this giant
leap soon we will find out where you're leaping to but before we begin our
formal mission program let's check in with astrocyte complex astrocyte do you
read [Ava Bakhtyari] 10-4 Mission Control loud and clear over. [Dean Page] anyone any remarks [Ava] yeah it's great to hear you as well Mission Control and not to Texas size 10-4
thank you for patching me into our fellow stations to share a few words for
space space agents far and wide Fellow 2020 classmates, and so countdown begins. Family, friends, significant others faculty staff and all folks here and
online thank you for joining us today to witness mission 2020s launch into our
future. Classmates who are now all family this is it. Today is our day. We have
spent the past three match days huddling up above the Hoehl Gallery in the
smallest of cracks trying to get a sneak peek of the emotional expressions of
those opening the very same envelopes or emails in this case that we will soon
open. We always thought this day was so distant although this year's
circumstances are a little different with the launch that we could not come
anticipated it is only fitting that we are adventuring into these uncharted
territories together as a class. To all those space stations from infinity and
beyond I want to share an observation from last year's matchday having arrived
a little too late to have a view of the stage I had a slightly different
perspective I was standing behind a family a mom and a dad, a spouse holding a
young and curious one-year-old and a grandparent seated in a chair in front
of them. This made me think time does not stop. Time has worked on all of us
many of those watching here and from rogue stations have seen us since day
one they read to us as little kiddos answered our impossible questions as to
why things exist as they do and taught us small lessons with large meanings to
prepare and protect us for what time will bring today they're joined in
person and virtually by family friends and significant others who have been an
important part of our lives by lucky chance. They have marveled at our
curiosity and enchantment with the world patiently watching as we find our life's
purpose. They have experienced our successes and our trials and errors as
simply an extension of ourselves feeling everything as much as we do. For a quick
moment class of 2020, let's take the time to thank all those for joining us today
or who may no longer be with us appreciating the time and gentle
guidance that our loved ones have invested in us to help us navigate our
life story today marks another day where we will soon celebrate a turn in the
adventure of life as we find out where we will be launched to next. Class of 2020
I am so grateful for UVM's Larner College of Medicine. UVM has managed to
bring us together from California Alaska Hawaii Delaware Vermont Florida and
Massachusetts to name a few It is beyond my understanding how
perfect you all are to me. It seems that we all fit in here like it was always
meant to be now someone once told me life is all about the fit. I think this
is true, but as we looked at opening our emails I challenge this idea a little
bit. To fit in is subjective. There is no right or wrong we are dynamic not
cardboard puzzle pieces regardless of what our emails hold
within them I hope we are all pleased and assured that we will once again find
our way and will fit in as we are meant to. Thank you so much for letting me be a
part of this crazy ride with you all. Now, before we begin some housekeeping. Each
of you will receive your match information via email at 12 a.m. 12 p.m.
Your two options: If you do not wish to share your match info open your match
email and keep the information to yourselves.
However, if you do wish to share your match info wait to open your email until
contacted by Mission Control. Use the raise hand option on zoom to indicate
you would like to announce your match. To do so click on the participants button
at the bottom of your zoom screen followed by choosing the raise hand
option this applies if you are participating with the group of your
fellow students if you are alone or with family and friends Mission Control will
contact Space Station's at random to announce matches the choice is entirely
yours and we encourage you to do whatever you feel most comfortable with
but just to repeat remember that you need to click the raise hand option on
Zoom to indicate you or other people at your station would like to share your
match. If you choose to announcer announce your match to the galaxy
remember to tell us your name what your specialty is and where you are going. Now
I was informed we have some special guests today I think they're from the
government I'm not entirely sure but they seem important [Music] [Dr. Christa Zehle] good afternoon Commander Page. [Dean Page] Good afternoon. [Dr. Zehle] hello cadets

Match Day is the best day of the year and space mission 2020 is no
exception. Congratulations. I am incredibly proud of all that you have
accomplished and today's match outcomes. The future of healthcare is in excellent
hands to the stars and beyond Commander Paige do you have some final
words of wisdom? [Dean Page] Yeah. To the space station and to our students I couldn't
be more proud of your accomplishments and excited for you in what you're going
to be doing next. What an amazing day. This is different. Last year I said no
one does match the way the Larner College of Medicine does and I indeed
again no one does a match the way it's been done today. Even with all of the
technology, even with us looking at screens or showing another screen,
this had an intimacy where where you could see it in people's eyes I got to
see your dogs in the background your babies things that we don't otherwise
have available to us in a traditional match so we didn't choose the situation
we're in but I'm tremendously grateful first of
all to Deans, agents, Eldakar-Hein and Zehle for what they've done.
You can't see we've got a set again less than fewer than ten people here in the
room who have done an amazing job. I can't believe we pulled this off so
to all of you, to the friends the families, all of you watching
congratulations. What an amazing day. We'll never forget this Match Day and now it's
fine for that it's time for that final step [Pre-recorded audio] One step for man, One giant leap for mankind. [Dean Page] Congratulations [Clapping]
