good morning everyone good morning everyone we're about to get started good morning good morning and welcome to matchday 2018 could we quiet down for just a second welcome everyone to match day 2018 this is a day of joy the unknown writer of Ecclesiastes about 2500 years ago said to everything there is a season and this begins our season of joy it's a season of joy because today you will discover where you will be for the next few years to begin to learn to serve to alleviate pain to cure disease to give hope to make a difference in so many people's lives it's a season of joy for us at the College of Medicine Phoenix for your friends your family we love you we have supported you we believe in you we know that you will make a difference in so many people's lives and we know that you will always make us proud so thank you for letting us share today in your season of joy and congratulations to all of you Thank You Dean Reid so welcome students alumni faculty staff family and loved ones at the College of Medicine Phoenix match day is a day of excitement and celebration today we crack congratulate our fourth-year students on their accomplishments they've worked diligently throughout medical school and during long hours of study really long hours in the hospital's lots of different training sessions and numerous a lot of interviews to get to this point and the whole purpose is to find out where they're gonna match today so today across the country all of the fourth year medical students are going to get the results at the same time twelve o'clock Eastern Time we're lucky that we get to do it first thing in the morning they're gonna find out their specialty the residency location the training hospital for the couples they're gonna find out if they're training near by each other they have spent the last five months filling out applications interviewing flying across the country spending thousands of dollars to sit here patiently waiting well maybe not so patiently waiting for their results just a couple statistics our students are vying for positions that forty-three thousand nine hundred students that includes do foreign grads Canadian students and allopathic students are all vying for the same positions so let's take a moment to applaud our students for their hard work so today we're about to distribute our envelopes but I want to just remind you how we've done in the past the College of Medicine Phoenix likes to always do it a little bit different each year four years ago we had 25-foot falling banners three years ago zip lines delivered the results two years ago we had hidden contraptions last year they were suspended in air so in like fashion this year we're doing a little different we're actually putting them right in front of you in a box so when asked about statements on how the class of 2018 how they would describe themselves one word came up consistently and that was kind although tenacious was a close second the class of 2018 our helpers and always willing to support each other they have a huge amount of compassion for their patients the class of 2018 gave up so much of their limited free time they volunteered logging over 6500 hours of service to others they were spread across Arizona with 36 different rural sites they applied to a hundred and sixteen away tations and went to 85 they apply to more than they go to typically and speaking of nice we have five students going through the couples match so three that are couples with other college of medicine Phoenix students and two that are couples with other medical students at other colleges and not related but we have four expected moms the class of 2018 is everything we could have hoped for in a class they're kind compassionate genuine and overall amazingly nice individuals they will make excellent future physicians in their specialties that they received today let's give them another round of applause now before you receive your results I want to thank the staff of Student Affairs who has been here at 6 a.m. to late in the evening buildings and facilities management university relations media services and all of our volunteers for their hard work in putting together this celebration let's give them a round of applause okay if you're not already students stand next to your box with your families and friends we are gonna start the audio countdown this is important after you have time to celebrate and we'll give you about 10 minutes to celebrate when everyone can quiet back down we'll call you up - we'll bring up the map and we'll call you up - the map so you can pin the state that you're going to and I also when you open up your box wait for the countdown when you open up your box you might need to help get something out of the way okay so feel free to do that don't worry it's okay we planned ahead alright media services queue video [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] Oh [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] students can you start lining up to the right of the map we'll have you come alphabetically across the walkway so students if you could start lining up alphabetically and if you're a couple we lined you up with the first alphabetical last name and students you're free to keep the balloons but we need to keep the washers apparently we have to give them back to the balloon people okay students look at Stephanie Smith in the pink dress line up behind her [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] before I call up the students to the stage to report where they're going and if you're not lined up now's the time I want to take a moment and recognize all of the students in years one through three who helped choreograph film flips dancing singing that was actually one of our own students voices for the surprise for match day today they did everything theirselves directed and choreography choreographed so let's take a moment and applaud them before the students start to pin what state they're going to I'm gonna give you a few stats for our class overall now that all the boxes have been open 29 or 36 percent will be completing their residency in Arizona 51 will be going out of state spanning 19 states outside of Arizona 35% of our students will be going into primary care fields of family medicine internal medicine pediatrics and med peds and the rest are pursuing specialties that are also much needed across the country so once again I congratulate to you all your successes dr.
