One thing you can't really do unless you’re like Messi, is slow it down. So as I'm going at pace, the minute I then, come to me, stop it… it’s giving him an advantage, because now we're both at a standstill and I have to try to take him on. Unless you’re Messi, then you do a little drop of the shoulder and go… Whatever. Welcome to this Train Effective camp session led by former Premier League player, Mark Beard, as he talks you through all the tips and tricks you need in 1v1 scenarios. The idea of this as the defender, if they can’t shoot until past there, what have you got to do first of all? Press. Press, get there as quick as you can. So, if he can’t shoot till there, so get there as quick as you can. And if he’s running, then stop there, so you get there you then sprint back. Now once you get him high up, okay, now he has to beat you with a trick. If you come running in and knock it past me… knock it past me. And you come like that, you’re no good okay? You’ve got to get there… get there nice and quick, stand up, and then make it hard to beat. Come on, Henry! So you’re gonna come out, and then you’re gonna stand up, you’re gonna delay him, okay? If I win the ball on the tackle, straight away you get the ball, you take him on. So it’s non stop. So you’re gonna have a go at attacking and defending. So if I now show you from this side of it, let me take you on yeah? As soon as I’ve shot, then run at me. As if you’re gonna take me on. So I’m gonna come running out as quick as you can, don’t slow it down, take him on. Okay, once I shot, you get the ball, and then I’ll sprint as the next one is going. Go, go, go, straight away! So it’s non stop. He tries to take me on. Shoot! Shoot! Then back out, you’ll defend the next one. So it’s non stop like that for two minutes, do you understand? Hey bud. Where do you play? I don’t play no more. I’m a manager. Millwall, Sheffield United, Stevenage. That's good, what’s the best player you’ve played against? Other than the invincibles, because I know… David Beckham… I played against Paul Scholes, was very good. I think Scholes was probably the best. I played against Joe Cole. Franco, do you know (Gian)franco Zola? He used to play for Chelsea. Unbelievable. Two things… for the defenders it’s getting there, closing them down straight away and then not diving in, just standing there. So, there's been some great defending! For the attackers, if you’re dribbling with the ball, what’s the best way for me to beat him do you think? Yeah, so there’s all different ways, you each shouted out five or six different things there, brilliant. If I’m running at pace and he’s coming towards me, as he comes and turns, if I’m running at full pace, it’s very hard for him to deal with me, okay? So run at full pace. Don’t slow it down, but don’t also run into him. Make sure you try and get some sort of trick. And like you see, Ronaldo would do 75 step overs, Messi would just drop the shoulder. So whatever is effective for you… If you’re quick, just take him on. If you’re slow, it might need to be a body feint, or like a Maradona that might be the only thing you need to do. Whatever you’ve gotta do, try it in here, practice, yeah? Guys, this time we’re gonna work on your hold up play. So when it starts, it will start with me being against the defender. Once you’ve passed it… Slowly jog in and you’ll go next. So this time, we’ve got to try turn our man and score. If my body shape is like this against Henry, he could try and nick it, because my body is too square, like this. So he could, put your foot around it Henry, and try and nick it. A good centre forward or a good midfielder will be on the half turn. So as he comes in, I can feel him, but now as he plays it in, I could hold it up away from him. So I’m there, and I’ve got to try and turn him, and get a shot off, okay? If you’re not very strong and don’t feel confident, what other thing can I do apart from holding him off? What can I do? Run away. So I could run away to start with, so as I’m there, come and mark me Henry, come and mark me, and then I could step in, and then I’m there. And then I could try and turn him and take him on, okay? So there’s different things you can do. Use your body, be strong. Run away, come back on. So the session here is… I do it with my first team, I do it with all the academies I work with. It’s about two things really. The attacking side of it is, being positive, taking players on, getting a sprint on, so you sprint as you’re coming towards a player, not just running into them with a skill. I wasn’t very skillful, but I could knock it past players. Maybe a drop of a shoulder to get past them. How do you beat them effectively? And then as a defender, it’s about getting tight early, and when you’re getting there, not diving in, waiting for that opportunity to go win that ball. It’s about teaching them to get there, stand up… get there early as well before they get a run at you, and then defending effectively. Second thing is as well, when we’re looking at the passing and the hold up play, is getting the body shape right, making sure that they’re on a half turn, so they’re not square on like that, and they can be nicked from defenders. So you can feel your opponent. I mean, if you can’t feel them, then move away and come onto it, and then the pass from the outside as well. Don’t go to the ball, and then just stick a foot out. Because, why? I’ve over committed and I’m no good to the team, I’m completely out of the game, okay? Don’t dive in, unless you’re 100% sure. So as he’s coming in, get there, spring back, make it hard for him. Wait for the opportunity to win the ball, okay? And when your ball goes dead, leave the ball, you defend, okay? So don’t switch off! Watch! It’s like in a match, you’re gonna give the ball away, yeah? It’s like he’s gonna do a cross-field pass, he’s giving it away to the opposition, I’m gonna run through. You gotta recover in. Pass it and chase me, that’s what you gotta do. Pass the ball, So he’s given it away, and it’s a 1v1 from there, trying to take him on, he’s trying to do what he can, okay, brilliant. Then once, I’m done as a centre-forward, I will go over there to the back of that queue, you go to the back of the queue. Now, the idea of this one, where did my first touch take me there? Forward but inside. I gotta go wide. So if you play it again, it’s gotta be away from him, pass it in, this time it’s gonna be a better first touch, it’s gonna be there! See how much more positive that is, if I touch it in there, it gives him a great chance, so we’re looking at, your touch okay? Don’t wait for the ball. Come and meet it, so as he’s passed it in, pass it again, I’m already on my toes, and I’m there, I’m out. If it does get under your feet, then just try to take him on and shoot. You can’t shoot till the blue zone again, okay? Just said to the boys about don’t worry about size because I see a lot of them are quite small and I don't think size really matters. I mean, to certain academies you go to, like you go to Chelsea, they’ve got a player database of athletes, strong, powerful and it’s hard to get in. But then again Mason Mount was a little one. So I made my debut at 18 for Millwall in the Championship. And Millwall is like a hotbed, it’s a tough environment, a tough place. I was 9 stone, 10 lbs, whoever I was up against, I didn’t let it affect me because, growing up as a kid, was always smaller than everyone else. So I just felt like to get the better of them you had to be stronger mentally, even if I wasn’t stronger physically. I think they’re the harder ones to play against, the ones who never give up. I was like a little rat and wherever the ball was, I was there around them, hard to beat. In the end, people use to not like playing against you, so it isn’t about size, it’s about your mentality, it’s about your attitude and it’s about your willingness to go and improve and to want to win and wanna be better than the opposition. This time we’re gonna start up against them, so guys, you might be a midfielder, you might be a forward, you might be a winger, he’s the defender. When you’re against them, try not to be like this! One, I can’t see him, I know he’s there but I can’t see him. Two, play it in, just try and nick it in front of me, pass it in, come and nick it in front of me, it’s easy for him to nick it, okay? Easiest way as a forward, a midfielder, whatever it is, Two ways of doing it, it’s being square on, like a boxer, so if I’m a boxer I’m there, I can jab, I got my hand out there, okay? Whichever way I wanna stand, so pass it into me. as he comes in, then I can try and roll him, okay? I can then, even if I keep it still, it comes in, just pass it in, I can see him, I can hold it and wait for someone else to come in. If you’re not that confident, or could be a littler one, against a bigger one, what else can I do to lose him? Drop away, yeah? So I could drop away, come with me, and then I’m there, yes, pass! As it comes in I try and lose him that way, however I wanna try and beat him, with a trick, a flick, a skill. I said to the other group a minute ago, I’ll tell you now, rather than stop it half way through, If I come off at an angle even, if I’m a winger, stay there still, if I come off, have my body shape open, If he’s passing it to me, where should he pass it to me, left or my right? Left. No. why not my left foot? Pass it into my left foot and just watch, come and nick it. That’s what’s gonna happen! So you’re aiming for me, but he could be there. If it’s on the far foot, pass it to my right foot, it’s called the safe side. Right foot, I can then spin him and I’m gone, okay? What did he do there? As a defender, to try and win it? He committed. As they commit, because they’re tryna stretch in, go bosh! Go... Bosh! Again they’re out the game, you’re in. So the detail in your pass is key. Hold up play, pin him or move away, find space, second thing pass. Defenders, don’t get in a fight with them, I don’t mean punch them and that, like if he’s a forward, don’t be tryna wrestle them, because if he spins me, so just spin me, again I’m out the game, okay? So be smart, if he’s stronger than you, just be at arm's length from him, play with him. You be the opposition so play, pass the ball into him, be off of him, I’ll just wait and see what he does and then if I can nick from there, I’ll nick it, yeah? Don’t have to wrestle them, win it first time. The idea is to stop them from scoring. Good boy, well done. And that’s all for today guys, we hope you’ve taken something valuable out of this video.
