our plans our worries and our concerns we simply drop everything and become simple like children let's take that second big breath and on the out breath we allow an interior silence to come and usher us into the contemplative dimension of our faith we take that third breath deeply [Music] and as we breathe out we sink profoundly into the depths of our hearts and there from a place of inner mystery but inner knowledge we cry out to god to touch us in exactly that place where we need that god-like love and healing the most [Music] is [Music] is [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us himself against our doings he reproaches us for transgressions of the law and he charges us with violations of our training let us see whether his words are true let us find out what will happen to him for if the just one is the son of god then god will defend him and he will deliver him from the hand of his foes with revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness of his patience let us condemn him to a shameful death for according to his own words god will take care of him the word of the lord [Music] the lord [Music] upon the [Music] letter of saint james beloved where jealousy and selfish ambition exist there is disorder and every foul practice but the wisdom from above is first of all pure then peaceable gentle compliant full of mercy and good fruits without inconsistency or insincerity and the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from it is not from your passions that make war within your members you covet but you do not possess you kill an envy but you do not obtain you fight and wage war but you do not possess because you do not ask you ask but you do not receive because you ask wrongly to spend it only on your passions the word of the lord [Music] [Music] has hallelujah us through the gospel to possess the glory of our lord jesus christ [Music] [Music] [Applause] a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you lord jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through galilee but he did not anyone he did not want anyone to know about it he was teaching his disciples privately and telling them the son of man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him and three days after his death the son of man will rise but they did not understand the saying and they were afraid to question him they came to capernaum and once inside the house he began to ask them what were you arguing about along the way but they remained silent they had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest and then jesus sat down called the twelve and said to them if anyone wishes to be first he shall be the last of all and the servant of all and taking a child he placed the child in their midst and putting his arms around it he said to them whoever receives one such child as this in my name receives me and whoever receives me receives not me but the one who sent me the gospel of the lord my dear friends my pastoral associate gwen cote has a marvelous gift for writing if you have not seen her reflections i invite you to turn to our sacred heart parish pontegorda website and to avail yourselves of the wisdom of this marvelous woman of the church who is such an amazing disciple of christ she inspires me greatly and i learn a lot from her particularly lately she reminds us how these disciples just don't get it here jesus is speaking to them privately away from the crowds and talking about what's coming he's going to jerusalem to be killed and then he'll be buried and he'll rise on the third day this goes right over their head but notice they're afraid to say anything because the last time he broke this news to them it was peter remember and jesus says get behind me you satan so fearing that he will have a response like that they just remain silent but get this as they proceed along to capernaum they start discussing and arguing amongst themselves who among the 12 of them is going to be the greatest and they have not understood what greatness according to jesus christ is at all they keep thinking that jesus is going to be enthroned as king of israel in an earthly way and therefore there will be power prestige money independence as i guess the senate of jesus or something but who's going to be sitting at his right who's going to be sitting at his left who's the if he's president who's vice president that type of thing and of course jesus knows this and he when they're in the house i love this he kind of says boys what were you discussing along the way and so sheepishly they had to remember that they were discussing who's the greatest in his kingdom notice what he does jesus takes a child now why a child hmm why a child do you ever notice about children that really they are rather little poor ones when you think about it they are really inexperienced they don't have the command of our human language they don't have wealth they are powerless they don't have legal rights they are in a sense the most vulnerable vulnerable of us all and jesus utters two big teachings about children first he says welcome them and second as today he says become them he'll go so far as to say unless you become as one of these children you will not enter the kingdom you won't have that experience of being one with god and having all of the benefits of divine love that really are your birthright so the art of becoming a child is to number one drop our superior sense the sort of supremacy that we think we've got also to be aware that sometimes we can all get a little inflated in our ambitions do you know what i mean just that little bit of one-upmanship that little bit of grandiosity the little bit of my achievement was better than yours or i went to a better school than you did or i did better in the stock market than you did or my car is better or it goes on and on do you see what i mean it is into this distraction that jesus brings the child and says hey remember that you're really dependent on the grace and the generosity and the love and mercy of god which is pouring out in abundance all the time remember that jesus is not a stern you know beating those disciples up because they were going off on a grandiose tangent he's not doing that at all but he is reminding them that the kingdom is about riches that no money no achievement no striving can attain the experience of the kingdom is rather received it is when one becomes so child-like that one is restored by the steady radiance of the beauty of god in creation in one's own heart in the love of those around us children are dependent completely and totally of the love and tenderness of its parents or caregivers can we agree little children are totally dependent on the tenderness and care of those around it now then he says whoever welcomes one such as this child welcomes me he will also teach them that whatever you do to the least not the greatest whatever you do to the least is the greatest in the kingdom you do it to me you honor me when you give so much as a drink of water to someone out of love you have done it to me and in the end he goes so far as to say that's the final judgment so welcome a child who might that child represent in our lives today hmm [Music] the marginalized who is it now that doesn't have command of the language who is it now that is powerless who is it now that doesn't have legal rights who is it now who is totally dependent on the care and the mercy of others who comes to mind well to begin with how about the people fleeing their countries because they are in fear of their lives there are they not the children of the gospel how about those marginalized people in our own society in our own country how about people that are different than we are and where we might look superior down our noses at them how about that homeless person that doesn't smell too good doesn't have teeth how about that drug addict how about that sex addict how about those people of sexual orientation that is not like ours and this big spectrum how about people on the spectrum what about the alzheimer's patients the people in nursing homes aren't they the children in our midst where jesus teaches whoever welcomes one of these welcomes me this is deep gospel teaching and not only is it a challenge of every day but it is the opportunity of every day to grow in the riches of the kingdom of god in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen and so do you believe in god the father the almighty the maker of heaven and earth i do too and do you believe in his son our lord jesus christ who was born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried i do too do you believe that jesus who died rose from the dead that he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father and to him alone belongs the divine right to judge anyone the living and the dead i do i do too do you believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of the saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting me too this is our faith and we celebrate it with great easter joy on this 25th sunday in ordinary time jesus calls us to be the servants of all with this in mind we bring our needs and the needs of our world to the heavenly father for the church that we may be good stewards of the gifts that god has given us and use these gifts for the good of others we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all those called to leadership within the church that by their example they will teach us to act wisely to love tenderly and to walk humbly with our god we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer may we be people of peace avoiding jealousy and ambition in our families and in our communities and may we support by word and action those who work for peace in our world we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer the way of christ is the way of the cross may we accept that way as the cost of discipleship ready to witness to gospel teaching and how we live and in what we value we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer that the lord will show great care for our parish catechists and guide them in their ministry we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for all who have died may christ welcome them into the eternal light and the joy of god's presence for our loved ones for the sick and the homebound military law enforcement personnel and first responders we remember most especially those for whom we have promised to pray we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer father of our savior these prayers we bring before you express our faith in your son who humbled himself to die on the cross for us and rose again to be our glorious lord who lives and reigns for ever and ever amen [Music] leads us [Music] for just [Music] [Music] leads us [Music] with your god [Music] mercy leads [Music] with [Music] mercy leads [Music] [Applause] with [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the for the lord and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church receive with favor o lord we pray the offerings of your people that what they profess with devotion and faith may be theirs through these heavenly mysteries through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you laid the foundations of the world and have arranged the changing of times and seasons you formed us in your own image and set us over the whole world in all its wonder to rule in your name over all you have made and forever praise you in your mighty works through christ our lord and so with all the angels we praise you as in joyful celebration we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth [Music] is [Music] [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you entering from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and the blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and frank our bishop and all those who serve you remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles saint francis saint claire saint therese and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of
