I've been doing sales well for a long time and so the Nuggets that I'm going to be giving you are rooted both in research as well as experientially [Music] marketing versus sales what really is the difference between those two one interesting fact is that the sales program here at Utah Valley University is actually located within the marketing department so that points to one differentiator between the two that is marketing from an academic point of view sees sales as a subset of marketing in fact they see it as one of the promotional elements one of the four Ps and from an academic point of view I think that that's a a good differentiator but honestly not very practical a more practical answer in terms of the difference between marketing and sales deals with the funnel when I say the funnel I'm talking about the sales and marketing funnel and what we have up here are prospects sometimes called Suspects and the goal in any business is to identify them and then bring them through and close them so that at the end here at the bottom we have a happy customer this is the Beating Heart of every business it really is the exchange mechanism that keeps all businesses alive marketing tends to dwell here at the top sales in general lives here down in the funnel as a result marketing is more about eyeballs and clicks it's gaining awareness whereas sales normally is about a particular individual or more typically a particular business or company so that is a more helpful differentiator between sales and marketing again marketing up here sales down in the funnel there is though however a third and for me a much more helpful and this has guided me throughout most of my sales career there is what's called a cost complexity curve so if we could this this graph if you will has two axes on this axis we have cost on this one we have complexity so the further out from the origin the more complicated it is the further away on this axis the more expensive it is and what we're going to do is we're going to put a curve that connects those two and that represents a particular product and so what we have is this cost complexity curve the further away that curve is from the origin the more expensive the more complicated the product is how does this relate to marketing and sales well in general marketing lives inside of the curve that is it shines with products with a low cost complexity curve whereas sales normally excels above the curve at the high end as far away from the origin as you can get that is where sales thrives as I have mentioned marketing and sales is truly the Beating Heart of a business maybe it's wise to learn as much as possible about both marketing or sales where do you think you belong put your comments down below
