um I I just I really believe this and uh but I I think anybody on this show is replaceable character is leaving it always has and I think there's always been a creative footprint on this show I think there's one on zo show as well yeah and I think it keeps actors healthy the they you know it's not my choice number one but I think anybody is replaceable after Stellar performances on hit TV shows like St Elsewhere Chicago Hope and NCIS Mark Harmon quickly became one of Hollywood's Leading Men and a darling of the fans of all his shows however after a long 19 season run as the Beloved Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS Mark suddenly called it quits on the show leaving fans and viewers confused with his sudden exit several years after his shocking decision to leave NCIS Mark has finally revealed the real reason why he was forced off the show despite being a beloved character stick around as we get right into it Mark's early years and upbringing Mark Harmon was born on September 2nd 1951 in Burbank California as Thomas Mark Harmon being the son of a sports broadcaster Tom Harmon and a former actress Elise Knox things weren't so easy for Mark growing up sure he had his two siblings but the family as a whole faced some really serious challenges first was that due to Tom's job he often traveled around the country leaving the job of raising their children to his wife alone it obviously wasn't easy for Elise she had to look after the three children on her own and also had to ensure she made enough to provide for them it's therefore unsurprising that even though she tried her best to be present in their lives her children couldn't help but feel their father's absence Mark felt this absence greatly so much so that on the rare occasions his father was home they barely got along Mark revealed in a later interview his father raised him hard so hard that he was taught to fight for everything but there was one thing the duo could see I to eye on Sports Tom had been the winner of the 1940 Heisman trophy for playing college football and Mark had followed in his footsteps to become an equally Stellar football player he was so good that he served as starting quarterback for the University of California Los Angeles for two seasons however Mark instead chose to pursue a different career path in life professional football was completely out of it for him he loved the sport and could give anything for it but he just didn't see a future playing the game competitively before leaving school Mark's sister began a relationship with Ricky Nelson the son of Television Legends Aussie Nelson and Harriet Nelson through this relationship Mark was able to get a walk-on rooll on the show ay's Girls which aired from 1972-73 this was going to be Mark's first time appearing on any television program although he hadn't considered acting when he sat to think about his future career path The Experience certainly gave him a taste of what Hollywood was like Mark possibly dismissed a future in Hollywood as a fairy tale dream after graduation he finally knew what he wanted to do with his life he had graduated with a degree in Communications in 1974 but when offered deals of up to $40,000 to train as a pro he turned them down so he could try to get into law school at the time he believed law was where his passion lay and he was finally ready to pursue it unfortunately he was wrong and had to leave Law to instead work with an advertising agency but he still didn't find the Fulfillment he was searching for so he tried his hands again selling shoes to athletes and as you could guess he didn't find that satisfactory either eventually he figured out what it was he was supposed to spend his life doing acting but acting is easier said than done and Hollywood is honestly pretty Cutthroat how exactly was Mark going to get his big break making it in Hollywood it was difficult but it wasn't impossible Mark's first fora into Hollywood had appeared to be a success and after trying his hand at other jobs he realized he could make a living by taking more acting roles he was also more excited to audition than he was doing these other jobs and he saw this as a sign that he was destined to be an actor however there was only one major problem making it in Hollywood certainly wasn't an easy feat so how on Earth was he going to achieve his dream in the very early stages of his acting career Mark looked to veteran actor Jack Webb star of the crime series Dragnet for his two cents about starting a successful acting career through his influence Jack helped him land a part as a guest on the crime drama Adam 12 which aired from 1968 1975 soon after this he had a number of guest appearances lined up but the roles were unfulfilling as they mostly involved him being a handsome silent stranger who had no lines to speak in his words the characters he played didn't have names he was simply the cop the farmer or whatever guy he was told to play his first notable breakthrough soon came in 1977 with the movie Eleanor and Franklin the White House years for which he received an Emmy Award nomination he might have received an Emmy Award nomination but Mark was still yet to get his big break so to support his acting career and his living expenses he turned to working as a roofer by day and spent the nights honing his acting skills while performing in Theatrical Productions in the Los Angeles area it all soon began began to pay off as in 1981 he was able to land a leading role in The Prime Time soap opera Flamingo Road where he played the role of an ambitious politician who married into a wealthy Florida family his wife in the movie was the one and only Morgan Fairchild and Christina Reigns appeared as his love interest their onscreen romance soon bled into their real lives as the duo became a thing offscreen as well unfortunately the drama cancelled in 1982 too but it didn't put an end to Mark and Christina's relationship the couple split 2 years later and although Mark was very shaken up about their new relationship status he hurriedly rebounded with a brief romance with actress Heather lle as quickly as he had moved on to another woman he also moved on to another TV series the medical drama St Elsewhere Mark had joined the cast while the show's second season was preparing to air the production was already a critically acclaimed program so Mark knew he had a lot to live up to on the show he played plastic surgeon Dr Bobby Caldwell alongside actors like Denzel Washington David Morse Ed Begley Jr William Daniels and even Howie Mandel Mark played Dr Caldwell so well utilizing his character as a weapon to create awareness about AIDS on the show Dr Caldwell contracts the disease during Mark's third season with the show depicting that a heterosexual male was just as likely to contract AIDS as other demographics of the population in an interview Mark shared that it was an important piece of information for them to get out because at the time there was some sort of consensus that aids was the end result of a certain kind of lifestyle and that was dead wrong not to mention completely misleading that same year mark played a very convincing Ted Bundy one of the most notorious serial killers in recent history in the TV movie The deliberate stranger his performance was Stellar to say the least as serial killer Ted Bundy was well known for his ability to charm his victims and Mark absolutely delivered the swaave and Sinister aspects of Bundy's personality luckily this role which was a huge deviation from the usual roles he took did not in any way affect his Public Image as a heartthrob so much so that in 1986 he was named people Magazine's sexiest man alive for the year in the same year he met actress Pam Dober through a mutual friend soon enough they forged a connection and ended up wedding in a small ceremony they'd organized for a few friends and family members in 1987 soon after they got married the duo soon became entangled in a very bitter custody battle over Mark's nephew Sam Mark had taken his sister Kristen Harmon Nelson to court because he was concerned she wasn't doing enough to cater to his well-being you might remember Kristen his sister whose relationship with Ricky Nelson gave Mark a taste of what the industry felt like well she'd unfortunately been experiencing problems with substance use after her split from Ricky whom she had gotten married to the battle was tough and caused a division amongst the Harmon family with Mark his other sister Kelly and his parents siding against Kristen eventually Mark had to drop the suit so peace could rain and all the fighting could stop around this time Mark had found some tangible success on the big screen and in 1987 he starred as Mr Freddy shup in the comedy summer school following this he switched to leading roles in the military drama the precidio alongside sha connory and the drama stealing home with Blair Brown Harold Ramos and jod Foster in 1991 Mark made his turned to series TV with the police drama reasonable doubts where he starred alongside Marley Matlin on the show he played the role of a detective assigned to work with a deaf assistant district attorney sadly the show was cancelled after only two seasons unfortunately for Mark the next show he starred in had an even shorter run with only five episodes of the 1995's detective series Charlie Grace making it on air his luck once again shown through when he joined the cast of David E Kelly's medical drama Chicago Hope in 1996 here he played an orthopedic surgeon a character that Mark felt close to because he had been a carpenter in real life and believed that so much of what these surgeons do in the surgical theater is similar to working with wood plus working in the series gave him more time to see his wife and two sons Shawn and Tai in 1996 Mark also became a real life hero after valiantly rescuing two teenagers trapped in a jeep accident that occurred near his home he had used a 12-lb sledgehammer to shatter the windshield to free the teens right before the vehicle blew up Mark enjoyed his time on Chicago Hope but all things must come to an end and in 2000 the show ended its run after this Mark went on to appear in several movies also Landing a guest role on the political drama The West Wing in 2002 he played a secret service agent on the series and was nominated for another Emmy Award for his outstanding performance as Simon Donovan on the show which was just what Mark needed to help him get his next big break NCIS NCIS TV producer Don Bellisario was a fan of Mark's work on The West Wing he believed mark would make a great fit for his next project as he'd been stuck thinking of who could best portray investigator Le Roy Jethro Gibbs in the military crime drama NCIS Don described what he saw in Mark as a very controlled presence which he believed to be a quiet strength and this was just what he was looking for to Dawn Gibbs was Mark's kind of guy with that jock mentality to tough it out no matter how tough it is the show was originally called Navy NCIS Naval criminal investigative service and after its debut in 2003 it soon built up a rather strong following the producers of the show claimed that it was developed to be a spin-off from the popular Navy legal series Jag which starred David James Elliot and Katherine Bell after the show's introduction as a two-part episode of Jag in April 2003 NCIS went on to Premiere as an independent show on September 23rd 2003 even though the show eventually recorded major success it hadn't exactly started out as so this was most likely because the series was initially called Navy NCIS Naval criminal investigative service as a result of cbs's indecisiveness their concern was that people might not want to tune into a show simply named NCIS as they wouldn't know what the acronym stood for to them the acronym wasn't as clear or as straightforward as FBI eventually the title was perceived as too long and then shortened to NCIS Naval criminal investigative service and finally to just NCIS took them long enough CBS was somewhat right about their worries as in its first few seasons the series wasn't a huge hit and it wasn't until a third season dropped that the show made it to the top 20 but by season 6 it was in the top five shows in the United States going on to spend several years as the number1 rated drama not only in the US but in the world the show was able to keep afloat for decades so much so that its 20th season was recently concluded and it had already gotten picked up for a 21st season but Mark isn't single-handedly keeping the show afloat as in addition to his special agent Gibbs character the NCIS team includes agent Tony Deno played by Michael Weatherly agent Timothy McGee played by Shawn Murray Dr Donald ducky Mard played by David mcallum and Abby shudo by Paulie peret in the series Mark was able to fully display what it meant for him to be an actor he was able to spread his wings from delivering light comedy to Serious drama Mark described his character Jethro as being really good at his job but so much of his life is really tormented and dark and he doesn't know if he'll ever recover from it to Mark Gibbs might be an uncomfortable guy to have dinner with the show appeared to be sailing on pretty nicely no onset feuds or unpaid dues were recorded however problem struck in 2007 when Mark and Don fell into a dispute over how the show was being run eyewitnesses claimed that the issues ranged from actors getting their scripts late to Mark making General complaints to the network following this Don was replaced and a new showrunner was brought in the new changes appeared to satisfy Mark as he shared in an interview that although it was a hard enough thing to do when everything was going right they'd made the necessary changes and were better organized for further filming years after this audiences still remain completely enthralled with Mark's character and the show itself so much so that NCIS averages more than 20 million viewers each week solidifying it as one of TV's most popular programs it definitely helps that the actors have such a friendly and easygoing rapport with one another and it has been said that offscreen Mark appears to be an easygoing downto Earth person he's even known by his colleagues for his dedication to his craft sense of humor and lack of pretention his wife Pam said he's one of those guys who makes you say they don't make them like that anymore and they really don't make them like Mark anymore whether his on or offscreen character he's proven to be one of the best guys out there in Hollywood marriage marriage 72-year-old Mark has been married to Pam since 1987 there their 36-year-old marriage surprises many because Hollywood isn't exactly known for its coup's lengthy and happy marriages and when both parties are in Show Business it's an even greater catastrophe but for Mark and Pam it's a completely different story the two first met through a mutual friend a couple of years before they tied the knot Mark disclosed that he made a cold call to Pam after their mutual friend suggested introducing them during a group date in his words he wanted to just call her simply get a number and just cold call which was exactly what he did after calling he got an answering machine and he had no choice but to leave a message that said they didn't have to go out somewhere fancy they could just grab a coffee together or something Pam seemed to like the idea as she soon picked up the call The Duo went out and they've been together ever since interestingly they got married exactly one year to the day after their first datee the wedding was an intimate ceremony in the chapel of markx Alma Mater the Harvard Westlake school on March 21st 1987 we really shouldn't be surprised that their marriage has lasted this long not only do they have love to keep them going but in 1986 Mark shared in an interview that he was monogamous in nature and after being named people Magazine's sexiest man alive he shared that he was fine with being alone at the time because when he finally tied the knot he wanted it to be everything people often said marriage can't be Pam was a star in her own rights starring alongside Robin Williams on Mor and Mindy but soon after her marriage she stepped out of the spotlight to focus her attention on raising her sons although Mark has said he doesn't exactly have a secret to his longlasting marriage he shared that they laugh talk and communicate openly which he believes is the fun part of matrimony although they share many things they couldn't be more different from each other their sons have followed in the entertainment industry with Shawn the eldest appearing on NCIS as a younger Gibbs in NCIS Los Angeles his younger brother Tai is also a screenwriter Mark expressed that he was proud of their boys as they understand their work ethic and they're very different he went on to share that one of the reasons he chose to take on the lead role in NCIS was to have more time with his family he emphasized the significance of being able to spend quality time with his family citing the joy of making pancakes together on Saturday mornings this commitment sometimes required sacrificing sleep with Mark recalling instances of coming home quickly showering and returning to work despite the demanding schedule he expressed no regrets about lost sleep highlighting the importance of being present for his son's lives and cherishing the opportunity to nurture their family bond in 2016 Pam disclosed that she took a Hiatus from acting lasting over a decade to prioritize her family's needs and to nurture their relationships something she felt was necessary as she did not believe their marriage would survive if both of them were full-time Hollywood entertainers however in 2021 viewers were excited to see her join her husband on NCIS for a seven episode Arc where she portrayed investigative journalist Marcy Warren reflecting on his life Mark expressed deep gratitude for his fortunate circumstances acknowledging that he appreciates his life every day and this was why he was ready to take a big step forward Mark harman's exit Mark starred in The Long running crime series for 18 years until his departure in 2021 despite being the central figure in NCIS Mark suddenly disappeared from our screens right after shooting his 19th season with the show it's pretty evident that NCIS owes much of its enduring success to Mark's Leroy Jethro Gibbs throughout the show's 21 season 20-year Journey Gibbs LED his team of investigators with a blend of sternness and compassion revealing bits of his past and potential life beyond military service Gibbs was so integral to ncis's Identity and narrative that his departure was unimaginable but it happened surprising viewers Gibbs Bid Farewell to NCIS in 2021 leaving his absence to loom large over the remaining characters and even newcomers while viewers debated whether or not he was truly gone from the show devoted fans wondered why Mark chose to leave a show that defined much of his acting career throughout Great Wide Open G IBS bid emotional farewells to old friends like Vance and medical examiner Donald ducky Mard with a tearful goodbye to McGee the episode ended with Gibbs finding solace in fishing at KN talk Bay a rare moment of true contentment for him although Gibbs was mentioned in subsequent episodes and his absence was deeply felt he never came back after that naturally controversies and speculations regarding his absence began to rise but despite some like his alleged involvement in poly Pet's departure Mark's exit was pretty amicable even before season 19 you might notice that he had been gradually reducing his screen time on NCIS reflecting some sort of shift in priorities over time his character evolved allowing Mark to explore different facets of the role in essence his decision to step back from NCIS was influenced by a desire for fresh challenges after over two decades in the role in a DVD commentary for NCIS season 19 Mark acknowledged that Gibbs had reached a natural conclusion the veteran a what has always drawn him in is the character he plays and to keep it fresh and challenging and gibbs's character has taken an honest and acceptable path as expected Mark's departure marked the end of an era for NCIS signaling a shift in the show's Dynamic and the start of new storytelling Ventures for both the character and the ACT despite gibbs's absence NCIS thankfully continues to thrive introducing new characters and storylines while honoring the legacy of its beloved protagonist NCIS showrunners noted that Mark's departure from the show left an unfillable void but it also opened doors for fresh narratives and opportunities for growth within the NCIS universe as viewers reflect on gibbs's journey and Mark's contribution to the series there is a sense of nostalgia mixed with anticipation for what lies ahead as of now what lies ahead could potentially be Mark's return to the show although he's yet to make a return while he isn't rushing to reprise his iconic role there remains a slight possibility of his comeback in a DVD commentary Mark revealed that Gibbs is not retired and is currently residing in Alaska to the best of his knowledge the hope for his potential return gained traction after Michael weatherly's Cameo as Anthony denzo in a recent NCIS episode however weatherly's return was bittersweet in season 21's second episode titled the Stories We Leave Behind denzo attended Ducky's wake fans appreciated deno's appearance but noted Gibb's absence especially considering the close relationship between Gibbs and ducky compounded by the real life passing of Ducky's actor David mcallum NCIS co- showrunner Steven D binder addressed this in an interview with TV line explaining that the initial plan to bring back Gibbs and other characters fell through due to budget and scheduling constraints binder emphasized that any return of Gibbs and Harmon would be meaningful and not just a brief nod to fans the door is always open and when we bring him Gibbs back we're not going to bring him back for 2 minutes it's got to be something special binder stated given the character's significance to the end CIS narrative it's understandable that his potential return is being handled with care and thoughtfulness plus after dedicating a substantial part of his life to one character in franchise Mark also deserves a break ultimately Jethro Gibbs remains a Cornerstone of NCIS history leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of viewers while his departure may have signaled the end of an era it also paved the way for New Beginnings ensuring that the legacy of NCIS continues to evolve and
