with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to saying to you glory to you o lord jesus said to his disciples the son of man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised then he said to all if anyone wishes to come after me he must deny himself pick up his cross daily and follow me for whoever wishes to save his life will lose it and whoever loses his life for my sake will save it what profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself brothers and sisters the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ good morning there was a movie that i saw at netflix young 127 hours it was 127 hours why was it 127 because there is this uh mountain climber iran he went alone jose may canyon something he was on top he was uh on a certain height and um he was passing through a kind of a crevice between boulders of uh walls of uh of rocks but then there were also boulders that were almost hanging the delusion he slipped and he fell and as he fell he hit some of the boulders and they started falling down good enough that there were those boulders appeared before him and it stopped him but then there was the boulder that came afterwards and he was pinned between the wall and the boulder and his right arm was just just their pin could not it was the boulder was so big and he could not pull out his arm he shouted and shouted and decided make all efforts nothing on the 127th hour he made a very painful decision of his life and young he got his knife and he started cutting knifing the right arm and then when it reached the bone he had to crush it to break the bone and only that saved him and it was that decision that cutting of his arm that gave him life he could have stayed there because it is so painful yet he did something in order to save his life jesus was talking about saving life you can have everything else even the whole world is says but at the end if you lose your life for heaven then you have not attained anything in your lifetime and he would be talking about losing oneself in order to gain life sometimes um this this reading can give us a lot of thought there was a writer who was even talking about lent decision of land as a season of uh spiritual amputation but one has to amputate one has to cut something from himself in order that he be able to set himself free that he could not always be bothered he could not always be entangled and imprisoned by something that has not to be there and yet it gives the person so much pain so much worry uh and uh so much sleeplessness even sickness and uh and often it comes from what is inside us that we cannot remove from ourselves imagine a person who feels so much pain still after many years that somebody has hurt him because it was really painful and yet the only way for the person to be free is to tell himself i have to forgive this person he's not doing that for the person is doing it for himself in order to free himself from that imprisonment that is why it is called a spiritual amputation this and many other imprisonments that a person could have could have and it is this period of length that can give us courage encouragement and inspiration and we may ask ourselves what are these that i have to amputate in this season of land fourth edition 40 days not uh not 127 hours but 40 days the 127 hours were painful but nonetheless if you have to amputate something from yourself from your heart from what you have been accustomed to from from our sins then that amputation really cost and that would also spell that doing it is following the lord he who follows me let's take up his cross daily and even fighting against sin is a cross that we we have to carry but then at the end there is always that salvation there is always that freedom that the lord can give the first reading is beautiful because in the first thing he tells us god makes a lot of efforts but then god also has limits and maybe not arrive to our limits that we would not anymore see the saving power of god land is a period of turning around in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen jesus who was on his way to jerusalem invited his disciples to follow him even as the cross was casting its shadow on them we too are invited to carry our cross daily and to bear life's burdens a sign of our discipleship lord help us to remain faithful lord help us to remain faithful may church leaders proclaim the saving cross with courage and joy even in difficult circumstances we pray may government officials take up their cross in the form of bearing with the difficulties of their office and demands of their constituents we pray lord help us to remain faithful may we abstain from what we do not truly need so as to help those who do not have the basic necessities of life we pray lord help us to remain faithful may those who bear the burden of sickness financial difficulties and weariness of life may join their suffering to the cross of christ by which god save the world we pray lord help us to remain faithful may the cross of jesus become our standard and identity mark as christians sharing in christ's passion and his glorious resurrection we pray lord help us remain faithful oh god of mercy may our observance of the discipline of land restrain our faults and raise our minds to virtue and its rewards help us in our journey until we behold your glory in your kingdom we ask this through christ our lord amen blessed are you lord god of
