in this video we're going to cover some of the new features that came out as part of powerbi March 2024 update including things like the shape file support for Azure Maps writing Dax queries with co-pilot and these new selection expressions using calculation groups all of that and more so without further Ado let's get started hi my name is fernan and welcome to the solutions abroad YouTube channel or recover tips tricks and best practices when working with powerbi I upload new videos every week so make sure you hit that subscribe button and the bell icon to get notified when a new one is out so before we start I just want to remind you that there is a challenge going on with the fabric AI skills Challenge and it's a challenge that's typically run every year and it usually lets you take certification exams within Microsoft that are usually worth over 100 these skill challenges are pretty much just like learning paths with some small quizzes at the end and I have used it several times in the past to snag myself a couple of certification exams specifically the ones that I have for parbi right now so if you are not aware the challenge is running at the moment until the 19th of February so if you're not aware it's a pretty easy way for you to get these certification exams for free so let's start with the updates with the new visual calculations feature so this is a feature that came out a few months back and I did cover it already in a previous video and it's basically a feature that lets you create or write Dax queries or Dax calculations on a visual level so in this month's update it just extends this feature to be available in the powerbi service so if you have reports that you have published in the service and you're using the edit your model or edit your report in the parba service you will have these options the new calculation or edit calculations available for you when you edit them online on the parbi service there are a few new updates on the on object interaction you can now use both the build panel on the right hand side in combination with the on object panel that pops up when you click your visuals so the idea with this change is that if you are familiar with the kind of Legacy experience like I am you'd be using the build panel however if you want to make or do some quick changes that you don't really want to travel too far into the build panel you can use the on object popup for you to quickly make those changes on object interaction is Now supported with the gauge visuals the default gauge visuals so if you right click or select any of the elements like you normally would double clicking them you will be able to access the formatting options on those properties so like the call out values or the bars themselves another thing that's changed is this new options in the pain manager so you have an option to toggle if the the pain manager is showing or hiding all the time and also have another toggle here here that either lets you toggle between having the one active Paine at a time which is how the original on object interaction works or if you want the the previous experience where you have the stacking panes you can just toggle this one off mobile layouts have also had a new update this month and it's actually really funny because I created a video covering how you kind of get started with mobile layout and they have now just come up with a new feature for this specific part of parbi so I'm going to have to most likely update that video but anyway uh the new updates allows you to autocreate reports that you currently have into a mobile layout with a single click of a button so looking at the feature summary blog post it looks like it sort of uses some sort of engine to take into account how your visuals are laid out if you have any bookmarks so it will try to adjust and align your visuals that best fit into a mobile type experience and this is actually something that I am really curious how it works and how it will react to visuals so I'll definitely cover this one in a previous video if not as part of my mobile layout video shape file formats are Now supported in the Azure Maps visual so if you have shape file format that you want to use to sort of visualize the boundaries geographically in a map you can now use this file either importing it into Azure Maps or linking it to Azure maps and it will be able to show show you those boundaries now drawing polygons in a map or in a custom image is already something that I've covered extensively in the past and the most recent one I did Cover just using the icon map visual to visualize you know your gojon your topojson files so if you are interested in how to do that and it's actually not that difficult go check out that video when you're visualizing data bars on Matrix visuals you can now choose where those data bars are showing so previously when you had this toggle you would be able to just toggle this on or off but with this new update this month you'll be able to choose either if you want to show it just on the values on the totals or both it just gives you a bit more flexibility in how you visualize your Matrix if you're using the multi-line layout for your cards or your visuals in powerbi you now have the option to horizontally align them and it just allows you to create visuals that are a little bit more cleaner looking if you've already started using the Dax query view you can now use co-pilot to Aid you when you're writing Dax codes or simply just trying to get some explanations as you're writing them so like a lot of the co-pilot features in parbi this is in previews so if you want to take advantage of it you need to make sure that you enable it in the preview settings and then restart your parb St for it to work from the Dax query view you then toggle or show the formula bar the the text box that you put your questions in by hitting control I and from here you can ask either some natural language questions or some general advice or maybe help you write the Dex code for you so this is just one of the co-pilot features that is available now in parbi and if you're based outside of the US you need to enable a certain setting in your tenant that allows parbi to process that data outside of your region So within us data centers so if you are working with sensitive data that you don't want to leave your region it's probably best to turn this off or get permission from your organization the enhanced role level security editor is now enabled by default in parbi desktop so from what I understand it's still in preview but when you try to add a new role level setting this will be the default experience so this makes the RO level security editor a lot easier to use for those that are not too familiar with Dax just because it gives you some UI to work with drag and drop or even adding new filters to various tables it just makes the whole experience a lot easier for beginners if you want to write some more complex RLS rules you can still switch to the Dax editor by clicking the switch to Dax editor button that will just toggle you between the uh the enhanced editor back to the Dax Ro level security is one of the ways that you can secure your data when you're developing parb reports so if you don't know what it is and how you can use it I have covered it in the past so check out one of my videos around it if you haven't yet selection expressions for calculation groups is now available and just reading from the blog posts uh from what I understand it basically just lets you specify how the calculation group works or reacts if you have selections if you don't have any selection or if you have multiple Selections in that calculation group it's actually pretty handy because they showed an example here which is how it reacts to you know if you have a conversion currency conversion using calculation groups so how the conversion should react if there are no currency selected or if there are multiple currencies selected so it's actually it sounds pretty interesting so I will cover and you know see how I can modify some of these functions for it to work and in what scenarios they might work there are more updates on the edit your model within the powerbi service which basically tries to mimic the majority of the features that is available in powerbi desktop so one of them or a couple of them are these so the first one is the autod detect relationships which is the feature that lets your model try to find a relationship across any tables or queries that you load into your semantic model the sort by property for column is also now available on the service as well as the RO level security editor which we just covered earlier there are new useful and simple functionalities that were added in the explore Feature Part in the powerbi service so this is the feature that lets you do ad hoc exploration for semantic models that are published in the service so you have things like undo redo and reset all changes uh or clear all which will clear everything that you have in your Explorer and they've also seem to have a updated the filter card styling which just gives or makes this experience a little bit easier for beginners to use you can now send subscriptions to one drive SharePoint so with this update you can now set the destination of your subscriptions into a one drive sort of SharePoint location just one note is that this feature does require premium capacity so if you can't find it it's either you don't have a premium capacity or just the fact that it's not available in your region yet because I think they are just slowly rolling this out across different regions the title bars in your powerbi desktop will now give you a hint on what kind of file you have open because now we have different file types that you can save your power airports in so you have the pvip powerbi projects so here for example in the blog post it's showing us what this file type is and uh if you click that it will show us a fly out which just gives us the location of where that file is stored as well as the individual locations of the separate reports and semantic model and lastly we're going to cover the paginated reports because there are new data sources now that you can use to pull data from into the powerbi pageat reports so now there is the Snowflake and data bricks from the get data button but actually I'm not sure if this get data button existed before but what's really interesting about this is that uh it now gives you the ability to transform your data into sort of a power query experience similar to what you have in powerbi desktop so this is actually very powerful because before it would normally be on the data sets Parts on the report data pane which is a little bit more cumers cumbersome if you're not too familiar with SQL queries so now if you are familiar with par query editor you can now use that in the page inate reports for parbi and that's really it for this video so as usual I didn't cover everything that was released this month only the ones that I was interested in so if you want to read and learn more more about what other things that is in store for this month's harbi updates I'll leave a link to it in the description box below thanks for watching as usual give this
