Making diesel from old chip oil.

at fuel pumps all over the world the price of this fossil derived liquid is steadily Rising if you look hard enough there may well be an oil well ready to be tapped just around the corner and there's a new breed of oil [Music] Baron but Darren and Nigel are no chiks they your Average Joe's who are spitting chips about the cost of diesel right we're going with a homemade rig and a few hoses they're tapping into a new source of the good oil yep we fine Darren we're basically collecting the oil from uh from the local restaurant here we're going to take it around to our shed and we're going to convert it into biodiesel to run our vehicles Darren and Nigel's operation is fairly slick with the restaurant gushing enough of the old gold to fill a 44-gallon drum once a month over at their backyard laboratory they clean and process the old chip oil into biodiesel good oil though relatively clean i' actually eat at this place well we've already filed it we've preheated it what we're going to do then is pump the oil from there into our reactor tank once we've done that we'll do the titration when the whole process is finished we end up with 100 L of biodiesel from 100 L of vegetable oil but isn't making diesel in your backyard dangerous diesel has a flash point of around about 70° C biodel interestingly enough has a much higher flash point point it's around about 130° C which theoretically means that it won't burn uh as quickly and as easily as diesel we've done our titration we've made up our Catalyst we've dumped our Catalyst in here now we're about to turn it on do the mixing so Carrie if you'll do the honors this is 5 minutes into the reaction and already we've got really good separation we'll give it another half an hour and we'll have almost you know really good quality biodiesel so for the next half an hour or so it'll just sit there and mix from there we'll take the the finished product pump it into here we generally like to leave it to settle for about a week because that means that all of the glycerol will actually settle out of it and what's left on top is good quality biodiesel and then we're more than happy to actually then pump that into our vehicles usually because we can get the oil for nothing most of the places that we pick it up from actually give us the oil the end result is that the the buy diesel after all all of our cost works out around about 30 cents a liter the product is clean pure and produces less greenhouse gases so with oil prices going through the roof who would have thought that restaurants would help keep fuel prices down and the air cleaner
