Making $5k/month With A Twitter Bot?

hey guys and welcome back to my channel today i'm going to be answering an important question can you make five thousand dollars a month in passive income just from a twitter bot now where did i get this idea from well there was a post on reddit that i saw pretty recently in the r entrepreneur subreddit and it said how someone as lazy as me leverages automation to make five thousand dollars a month and what they went in to talk about is how they made apparently five thousand dollars a month in passive income just by building a twitter bot now the post is quite lengthy it has actually been deleted you can still find it uh using google's cash service but here's the summary of what the guy was saying the guy said that he made a twitter bot that reads interesting posts from someone famous maybe an influencer it would then retweet these posts across to the internet normally the most popular ones according to him what would then happen is people would see this bot and it would be called like influencer a bot or something like this and it would follow it for the interesting retweets and things like this and maybe the influencer themselves would often quote or retweet or like the posts by this bot and then people would obviously follow it and it would get lots of followers lots of likes lots of interaction and then the guy would just send out some affiliate links and sometimes he claimed these links included links to the influencer's own course but with another tag so that he would take a percentage of that income and he claimed he could just let this twitter bot run it would occasionally retweet occasionally send out tweets and sometimes it would send out these affiliate links and he apparently made five thousand dollars a month just by sitting back letting this twitter bot run now this post got a lot of attention on reddit and people were asking questions left right and center about why he hasn't built more twitter bots like how long it took him to build lots and lots of questions about this and i myself was actually really interested too because i saw this and i thought you know i can build this i can write a twitter bot in like a day and you know what i can go bigger than this like i don't have to just look at one influencer i can you know look at a whole hashtag maybe a whole topic and you know tweet and retweet stuff about this topic and then it will get even more followers and i can send out even more affiliate links like amazon links and all sorts of stuff i can make tons of money off this so i thought you know what why don't i give it a go so this video is a story about my attempt to replicate this to make that money per month by making a twitter bot and this is what i achieved now by the way if you're new around here my name's wayne and i make coding tech raspberry pi videos so if that's something you're interested in consider subscribing so most people were really into this post they thought it was amazing they all wanted to go and do it themselves but there were a few people that were skeptical and one of those users was called benson8799 and he did a bit more digging so this post by benson was titled how someone as lazy as me leverages common sense to expose bs on our slash entrepreneur and that one again took off as well he got thousands of upvotes um because he believed he'd found the the answer and believed he proved the original post wrong the post that he made about this is actually still up on reddit and i'll leave a link to that below here and it actually has some really interesting stuff but there's two main things that he found in that post first one he says is he investigated the original poster claiming that he makes this five thousand dollars a month but he saw that only six days before he posted this story about how much he makes he actually posted uh on another subreddit asking how to make a twitter bot so if it was true then this guy managed to build a twitter bot learn how to make a twizzlebot build a twitter bot and make five thousand dollars a month in six days and so there's a little bit of doubt there but he went further he actually looked into some more of the comments by the original poster and he found the original poster was amazed at other people claiming that they had built such bots and automated tools and were making lots of money from it by people asking them to build them for themselves so maybe joe bloggs on the street would ring this guy or email him and say can you build me a bot that tweets a specific person or this specific topic and pay maybe 500 for it and people are actually succeeding at that and so the poster that claims he makes all this money um was commenting about how amazing that is again only about a week before he made his own post so what this user benson had summarized is he guessed that this guy had seen how how much money you can make not by having a twitter bot but by having people ask you to build bots for them and so he made this claim that you know he was making all this money and therefore people would you know ask him to build bots for him for themselves and so that was his idea anyway but of course we don't actually know what happened we don't know whether uh this guy really did make a twitter bot and make loads of money or if it was just a fake post to try and generate people you know asking him how to do it now my suspicion was the post was fake it does look like you know the guy had never actually built such a thing maybe he would get it working but he certainly hadn't made money from him however that did not stop me because i thought even though that post was fake it could still work the premise could still be there you could still theoretically make that work so i thought that's not going to stop me i'm going to go ahead and build it anyway and see what comes with it because i mean it's only going to take a couple of hours right to build so that's what i did i decided to go ahead and build it anyway so what is the first thing you do when building a twitter bot well the first thing you have to do is actually contact twitter because their apis or most of the decent apis are no longer public you have to actually apply for an access key to be able to query the apis and so i filled in an online form that said i would like access and the reason is that i essentially want to build an automated tool that shared interesting content that people could follow i decided to do this on two different topics um just in case one of them was you know a topic related reason it didn't work so i decided to make a technology bot and an entrepreneurship bot uh so two fairly distinct topics now when i filled in this form for twitter i had to specify the exact reasons i wanted to build this bot and it was exactly i put in exactly that i wanted to share information people would only follow if they needed to and i had to guarantee to them so i wasn't going to do anything nefarious like spam loads of people sending out loads of dms and stuff like that so i really had to prove that in quite a long form when making the application so i do note if you do want to do this it's not like a five minute job you do have to send in this fairly lengthy application form so once i've done that i actually then a few days later got an email back from twitter and this is what it said it said before we can finish our review of your developer account application we need some more details about your case and it said they wanted more details about the core use case and what i intend to do and what i intend not to do but the funny thing was i'd already explained all this in the original document the original form i had to fill in so i basically copied and pasted it again i tried to clarify a little bit more i enhanced it and i sent it back and i thought okay that should do it like i mean i can't explain it any more than that and then a couple of days later guess what happened i got the same email back it's almost identical it says we still need more details about your core use case but i didn't just get it once i got it not once not twice but four times i went backwards and forwards emailing twitter basically copy and pasting the same thing saying i don't know what more you could possibly need because this is literally what i intend to build it for and it took a long long time and then this is what i got they said thanks for applying for access it looks like your proposed use case may be in violation of one or more sections of the developer agreement automation rules and all the twitter rules well i was very confused because i had literally taken from their automation guide the top thing was about how you can make a bot that will retweet interesting information and people would follow it and that was one of their ideas that they recommend people do and that's literally what i was describing i was building so what rules i was breaching i have no idea and i thought well i sit dead in the water they've killed my idea because they've rejected the application and i should say i did this obviously two separate applications for a tech and entrepreneurship one and i got the same emails uh exactly the same for both it's like the same person had pressed the button at the same time or something i don't know so i thought it was dead in the water and i thought that's it well you can't make money from a twitter bot because twitter won't approve your access to an api but i figure one more time i'll email back so i replied to that email and i said i don't understand if you look at your automation rules it literally says this is one of the things we want you to build and this is exactly what i'm building and then they got back to me again this time lo and behold i got an email your twitter developer account application has been approved so i have no idea what rule they thought i was breaking but clearly they changed their mind and decided to give me access so there we go i have now two twitter accounts with api access keys so now i can actually go ahead and start writing the box but this was about a month and a half after i first sent that application so now i have access it's time to start coding the thing so i whipped out uh my macbook and i got started on some python code because python code seemed to be the easiest thing to build a twitter you know bots with so i used python and i used a library called tweepy now tweepy is just like a library that you give it to your api access keys that twitter eventually gave me and then you can call various different functions of the api such as um post within 30 days by topic or hashtag so i used a a search that allowed me to search for not only the most popular but also the most recent it would mix in that content and it would provide me with those tweets i then got those tweets and i liked them and retweeted them and i looped through this for about 10 20 times and then i decided to make a scheduler so there's a tool called cron and uh if you use crontab hyphen e it allows you to actually set up a schedule at which you can call a script so that's exactly what i did i set this thing up to call the script every half an hour and so every half an hour it would go away it would search for a hashtag so say tech or entrepreneurship and it would like the the top or the latest tweets and then it would sit back half an hour and it would go again in half an hour's time but of course i needed somewhere to run this i wasn't going to pay for a server because i had my doubts about how successful this was going to be and i didn't want to have my mac running you know 24 7 running a spot so i whipped out a raspberry pi and you can actually see it behind me this here is the raspberry pi zero it's attached here for i don't know what reason i just wanted to see it but essentially it's a very low powered raspberry pi it's just plugged into the power down there uh it's the one with the wi-fi so pi zero w h and uh yeah so essentially that's what runs crontab and has the python scripts on there the two different scripts for the two different twitter bots and it just does that every half an hour it goes away 24 7. so that's where i decided to run the script now that's it so i got access i wrote the script i have it running 24 7. all i have to do now is sit back wait for the tweets to you know get popular wait for people to follow the account generate all that likes and interaction and then start spamming out some affiliate links and making loads of sweet sweet dough however there was a problem and that's that this twitter bot has now been running for about a month and this is the statistics for it that's right both bots up and running for pretty much a month constantly tweeting and retweeting and liking content 24 7 and they have almost no followers less than 10 followers each so yeah that's what i found out you can easily build a twitter bot when you've got access from twitter you can definitely get some interaction going uh but can you generate followers no no one is interested in following a bot they want to follow real people on twitter that's tweeting real content and so what do we learn from this well first thing we learned is if a post on the internet specifically on reddit tells you that you can make double your monthly salary by spending two hours coding something and never doing anything again it's probably fake it also taught us that probably most of these posts telling you how you can make loads of money in a really short period of time aren't going to work that well now i'm sorry if you clicked on this video thinking you were actually going to be able to make this money but i think it is a really important lesson for everyone here and that's that you do actually need to put a bit of effort in to make some money like youtube for example i've been doing quite a few videos on here now i finally hit the monetization threshold but it certainly wasn't just a few minutes work this has taken a lot of scripting a lot of buying equipment a lot of planning a lot of recording and unfortunately that's what it takes and eventually you can earn a passive income but it's not from two hours work coding a twitter bot if you do want to actually see how to make passive income it does take a little bit more effort and time but you can generate some side income i have made a video and i'll leave the link just here and it's uh basically how to make passive income if you're a software developer and there are some good ideas on there and they're not clickbaity like this reddit post where it's like you're gonna make thousands in just an hour like you can make hundreds maybe maybe thousands with a little bit of effort so go check that out if you actually do want to make some side income on the side it would be more satisfying to have a whole bunch of money now but it's also kind of satisfying to think actually a lot of these influencers these people online like they make out they're making this money really easily and it can kind of be depressing when you're working you know in an office nine to five or maybe in a factory or something like this but actually it shows you that actually these people probably did put some effort in and uh the ones that are successful anyway and the ones that are just treating
