[Music] in this video i'm going to tell you about the makabun necron dynasty show you how to customize them for yourself paint them up in easy steps and share their special rules for warhammer 40 000 and also tell you how you can win these actual models hi i'm guy and you're watching midwinter minis let's get stuck in the makaban dynasty are a mythic sect of necrons a breakaway cult of the novoc dynasty ancient haunted constructs that hunt all sentient life they wear the flesh of their victims to exalt their organic ancestors in a demented twisted ritual basically i really like the idea of necron flayed ones not their nasty fine cast models but the concept of malevolent souls banished to living metal bodies falling into the depths of insanity and depravity over millions of years if you're not familiar with the backstory of necrons in warhammer 40 000 they're basically an ancient race of aliens who left their organic bodies behind and became immortal putting their spirits into living machines i won't go into all the details of how or why here but the moral of the story is they were tricked by the concept of immortality and lost their souls in the process with these models and this custom dynasty i thought it would be fun to explore the idea that these necrons are in a perverse twisted way trying to return to their fleshy organic past not by reversing the process of biotransference but simply by skinning their enemies and wearing their meat they've been alive for 60 million years after all plenty of time to go absolutely bonkers so that's my loose concept let's customize some models this classic horror movie style should work pretty well on all necron models so i'll show you how to create it on some of the new necron models from the indomitus box set we've got some warriors the royal warden scorpek destroyers and of course senor skorpek now just a quick heads up if you're building your first set of necron warriors using this kit follow the instructions to the letter don't do what i did and snip out all of the individual parts for quick cleaning thinking that it would make assembly quicker later each body has only one set of arms and two heads that fit properly and it's a nightmare to try and match these all back up again seriously who thought this was a good idea anyway these are fantastic models lots of crisp details but don't be afraid to get creative with them and make them truly your own to personalize them we're going to do a little bit of additional modeling you can use any sculpting material you like but i'm using milliput because it's what i have and i'm used to it it's pretty widely available and easy to use if you want to use milliput 2 knead the two parts together thoroughly and then leave a ball out for an hour or so if it's too fresh it'll be too soft to work with this was about double what i actually needed for this project so make a little bit less than i did here while i waited i based my models i want to go for a bleak lunar style but you can do whatever you want obviously to build up texture i just used this cheap structure paste i got from flying tiger we made a video about using canvas texturing stuff like this to add a realistic look to mdf terrain we'll put a link to that in the description if you want to check it out later okay so now the milliput has had about an hour or so to firm up grab a thin plastic bag something like a sandwich bag would work fine break off a small piece of milliput wet it and squeeze it between your fingers to flatten out the bag will stop your fingerprints making impressions on the milliput and the moisture stops it from sticking to the bag this is sort of what you're aiming for thin mangled shapes of milliput use a hobby knife to slice off a section and place it firmly on a necron so that it sticks and then use your dampened finger to gently tap it down and shape it a bit we want it to look like the flesh is hanging off and not just flying you can use the flat of your knife to smooth out any overly rough bits or even wrap some limbs entirely in milliput for a couple of them i also covered their faces too i used a cocktail stick to poke little lie holes peekaboo carry on building up these fleshy bits until you've got a level that you're satisfied with too little and the effect won't be that noticeable but too much and you might as well have just made little milliput men and not bother with the necron models at all if you've never tried using milliput before this is a really easy way to start the necron models act as really great armatures for you to build up your own details and we're trying to be gross and messy here so it's very difficult to truly make mistakes get creative and have fun after about three or four hours the millipede will be dry and it'll be ready for the next step time to add some gore effects this is a really easy effective technique that more people need to know about i think simply paint a blob of pva glue onto the area you'd like to look like ripped up rotting meat blood and sinew and then crack out some super glue and apply it over the top give it about 10 seconds and then start agitating the mixture gently with a cocktail stick whatever you do don't use a paintbrush because it'll be ruined forever if you work slowly you can even draw out gross stringy bits as the two glues interact and harden as they move so after milliput and glue gore here's what the models look like at this point even if you're an experienced hobbyist you'd be forgiven for thinking that you've absolutely just ruined these lovely expensive models but don't worry it's all uphill from here let's get some primer on these guys so we can stop seeing the plastic mulliper and glue mess and start seeing those actual models ready to be painted for this paint scheme black primer would make the most sense and using blue tack i stuck the models to strips of cardboard cut from pizza boxes and gave them an even spray once they've all had an even coat of black crack out a big brush with soft bristles and over-brush a nice terracotta onto all the models if you're using my recommended speed paint palette mix red and brown together or just something like citadels mournfang brown or vallejo's terracotta is great if you already have them we want to leave a lot of that black undercoat showing but give the model's surface a nice brown to build up from now let's move on to the metallics when you've been painting for a while you'll probably have lots of this type of brush it used to have a good point but it's been battered over the years and now looks like this don't worry there's no such thing as a useless brush and this is going to be perfect for what we want to do now using a deep bronzy gold color just start tapping the paint onto all of the metal parts of the model we're not dry brushing not really stippling just tapping here and there we want to build up this kind of mottled warm look while keeping plenty of that warm brown showing through after that we'll switch out to a gun metal colour and just lightly drag your brush across a few random places focusing on sticky out bits that would probably hit off things and get worn and damaged scratching through to the metal underneath and here's what just these few steps look like on the scorpek load technically i suppose this is also a speed painting zarakan dynasty video you're welcome i suppose now base coating the flesh and gore bits is nice and easy i'm going to be using thinned khaki paint to give all of the meaty sections two thin coats and then use some deep blood red to catch the messy bits if you don't have an appropriate red any fiery red will work if you mix a tiny bit of brown and a touch of black in just to dull them down a bit while the models were drying i mixed up a small batch of my diy dip wash but this time using mostly sepia ink rather than black and then gave each model an all-over coat if you want to learn how to make this easy cheap model shade paint i made a video about it again you can find the link in the description after they've dried they'll look something like this gnarly worn and totally gross if you want to knock out an army in one day you could just leave it here but if you want to take the b-movie cosmic horror to the next level there are a few more steps we can do before that a quick shout out to our newest patrons pleasant kenobi kellen french david carter stuart disbury nathan essenmaker the gaming beaver reza voistani samuel matthew polland llama zero andrew welsh adam o'brien ralph hodge elwynn mark d ordaz martin boley daniel webber unagi boy talia hunker one fell sloop jamie from lap inn cameron warwick alec roundy robbie dooley horrid blade louis jameson wayne mulcahy jason stevens and kevin d steins it absolutely blows me away that there are over 700 people who support this channel every month it lets me make these videos an actual job a dream come true and i can't thank you all enough right let's crack on with the extra steps first let's make the flesh stand out a bit more from all those warm tones of the armor add a tiny bit of white into your khaki paint thin it so it flows really nicely and using just the tip of your brush sketch out some rough highlights onto the more prominent areas avoid recesses and any cool markings left behind by the wash stage now i'm using a size 4 brush here it's quite big detail isn't really what we're after just adding texture when your paint is as thin as this it'll dry very transparently even though it looks very bright right now this is what the models will look like after the first pass once it's dried now we'll do another pass but this time we'll just focus on the really really prominent bits ridges and edges of any tears and rips that way you'll have four or five different intensities and colors from all the previous stages showing through to ramp up the gross factor i'll be using blood for the blood god to add a wet bloody look to all of the gore parts i mixed in a tiny bit of black wash as well to take the edge off that bright red i don't want it looking that fresh add it sparingly here and there to any of the glue gore bits that you like to look particularly nasty when this paint dries it'll dry with a wet shine if you want this kind of effect but don't have access to this particular paint you can do it by just mixing a bit of gloss acrylic varnish into that blood red paint we mixed earlier for a similar look don't be afraid to get this bloody stuff on other bits of the model and flesh too if you put too much on just quickly dab it off with your finger give that a few minutes to dry and then we'll do some metal highlights for this i'll be using vallejo aluminium but even the original gunmetal color you used earlier should work fine as the previous steps have been muted by the wash we applied we'll be going with some simple edge highlighting here nothing that fancy just thin the paint nicely don't have too much on your brush and use the side of your paintbrush to lightly trace the sharp bits of any blades the underside of any damaged bits of the armor and any really easy to reach bits of the bodies like the exposed hips you don't need to go crazy here just a few little bits here and there will really make a difference now everyone seems to be painting these big blades like they're glowing but that's not really what i want for the makaban dynasty here's a low-risk way of adding some nice contrast to the blades using the tip of a detail brush you can't use the side because the angles are pretty much impossible trace out some of the engraved shapes on the blade surface and pick out the bevel in the middle of the blade with smooth strokes now don't worry if your lines aren't perfect mine aren't and we're not about perfect here some bits will look good others will look less good now crack out your original brassy gold paint and just using a tiny bit of paint dab it over the bits where the line is messy or doesn't look as neat as you'd like it to this will mask it off a little bit quite transparently and creates more texture while still hinting at the shape underneath a pretty simple cheat technique but it's quite effective on ancient blades now i've already covered how to make cool glowing effects with and without an airbrush on this channel with my sandstone necrons videos in fact those were the two very first videos on this channel so for these necrons i'd like to keep things a little bit more understated i painted the little orbs on the weapons and the eyes using vallejo's intermediate green and then shaded all over those areas using a dark green wash citadel's beeltan green when that was dry i mixed some yellow into the green paint that i just used and picked out some highlights on the eyes and weapon orbs using the detail brush finally i added a dot of pretty much just pure yellow thinned a lot just to add a tiny speck of light and make them look a bit more piercing i painted all of the bases a cold grey to contrast the warm tones on the models and to finish them all off i gave the bases a light dry brush with white black rimmed the edges and called it a day overall i'm really happy with how these models turned out it's definitely a fun way of personalizing your necron force giving them a bit of macabre backstory and maybe breaking away from the official necron colour schemes which i've never found personally that inspiring so how would these cosmic horrors play out in the game of warhammer 40000 well i've come up with a simple dynasty rule that feels pretty apt basically just replace your current dynasty special rule with this one markipan frenzied butchers when a unit with a makaban code targets a unit with the infantry keyword in the fight phase the makaban unit strength increases by one and armor penetration characteristic improves by one until the end of the phase now that's the game's workshop style of rules writing that has to be overly specific to minimize exploits by power gamers for simplicity here is boiled down plus one strength and plus one armor penetration when targeting infantry models in the fight phase again this isn't official in any way but it's not overpowered so feel free to use it in your open play and narrative games now what does this name mean well not much to be honest machiban is a bit of a mix of the coptic egyptian and arabic words for butcher but tarted up a bit to match the style of the other necron dynasty names now how would you like to win these models i'm going to be giving away this little army five warriors a royal warden three scorpek destroyers and senor skodpek to one lucky viewer it's been really really amazing to see so many people being inspired by my sandstone necron tutorial i want to give them the same treatment as the makaban dynasty so i want to hear your suggestions head over to our community page leave a suggestion for the name of the sandstone necron dynasty a little bit of backstory and their dynasty special rule and we'll pick our favorite at the end of august 2020 and then send this gross little army out to the winner as a reward so that's it i suppose thanks so much for watching if you want to see more close-ups of these gross models head over to our instagram at mwminis i'll catch you next time bye for [Music] now [Music] [Music] you
