day one I found the Appalachians in the northwest holy smokes the steepness is unbelievable I'm loving it but it's kicking my butt I already had to walk one of them I'm maybe 10 miles in on a 44 mile day let's see if I can do it [Music] oh shoot [Music] on our way to Redemption I forgot to mention that I have a stronger it should thirst for the world I can see past the Caravans be caught inside a noise [Music] [Music] [Applause] because I can't [Music] [Applause] [Music] face is mild your will is strong tell me I belong with a swan dance [Music] [Music] [Applause] Stickman foreign [Music] did it but I got myself on a real busy road with a very narrow shoulder with no shoulder at all continuous traffic but I'm getting through it I'm sore in the legs tired not really tired just sore getting my first day in always a difficult one but it'll be rewarding at the end 30 miles in feeling good a lot of ups and downs but uh short-lived and steep but manageable [Music] foreign I'm going to try to do 50 miles to a campground and it's sort of beautiful out here I got a giant shoulder now if not a double wide shoulder at times and there's hardly any traffic it could be because it's the weekend but enjoying [Applause] check out this hill it's legit and it's so beautiful here it's getting all Lush and forested I'm on a mid-grade incline forever I look down the ways and it's nice talking I am pooped all right keep going that's the only way go forwards what a drop oh and what a climb I'm destroyed I'm ready to stop and I'm about to I'm really close I'm gonna get some food and enjoy this uh amazing evening it's so beautiful out here foreign I just had an awesome breakfast at this place in cool scene where I stayed at the cool scene Campground it was an awesome night I slept really good and now I'm back on the road I'm gonna try to do over 50 miles today got a nice early start so let's uh get to it what a trail unbelievable so well kept this is a ridiculous Trail there's hardly anybody here I've seen a couple of people I'm like right next to the ocean it's calm and beautiful slicked out good news I never stopped oh man what a day I gotta stop sometime and I will in seven more miles finish it up I was heading to a ranger Creek Campground and nobody around here knows about it and it's downhill a long way so I don't want to go racing downhill after I've been climbing so much to a place that I don't even know if it's a there because nobody around here knows about it Shannon and how we uh offered for me to stay in the back here and I'm gonna do it I'm so tired I think I'm I don't even know how many miles over 50 so I'm gonna go back there and chill out you know because that's what I agree you know people like you and I know you're just you know what I mean enjoy the beauty I can't thank you enough oh it's all good dude it lifted my spirits I was so tired so I was just like and when I was over there I couldn't get reception I'm like what the hell I mean I would have been heading back to a probably my tents drying in the Sun and I'm just gonna wait a little while and pack up and get back on 101 and see what else is going on everybody says that the route down on 101 South is spectacular with monster trees eight foot wide at times and there's a Crescent Lake in the way lots to see I'm having like sort of this feeling that I'm getting in the groove of things and that feels good because those Jitters that I had at first are kind of gone other than that it's over and out back in the road you see what I find foreign you guys know I just go for it don't really research much I just hear what people have to say along the way and I've been hearing that it's spectacular coming up that was easy next so far the westbound 101 leaving Port Angeles is totally different than the east side going north and south on 101. of the Olympic Peninsula it is so much more tranquil giant shoulder absolutely beautiful right now is just gorgeous crazy scenery unbelievable I could have gone on the Discovery Trail but I don't know anything about it and I can't pull it off on my phone and if they have that sign back there to press the button and give a heads up to everybody riding through here that there's a cyclist on the road guessing that is a commonly used route so have a narrow shoulder which is not that narrow and they're advising for the next 11 miles to uh try to get off the road when you hear traffic coming behind you so I took my headphones off I'm just going to enjoy the ride here and do what I usually do just try to give traffic the the space they need and not get in the way change out better than this and not no way we're looking on my rear mirror making sure nobody's coming up behind me so I can get out of the way that's how I'm doing it I'm gonna stop every time I hear cars coming or traffic coming behind me before these turns it's a safest way to not have somebody be uh ambushed by a third party on the turn me anyways Crescent Lake right here I'm having to stop quite a bit on these turns but not that many times and it's not like a big deal because the views are outrageous this place is without a doubt one of the most magical places I've ever seen this is one of those places where I want to stop every 100 yards I'm telling myself not to because I'm never gonna get anywhere today and I need to get somewhere foreign [Applause] what a view what a way to spend a 20 minutes just sitting there checking everything out I'm in the best mood possible I'm almost to the other end of the Lake I've been doing a lot of stop and goes but these pull outs they're phenomenal I hear the trucks coming right now and the cars it's like a flow of vehicles at one time and then it gets really quiet so I can just keep going and very rarely did I get caught in a turn here they come coast clear time to go again not a big deal we just can't be in a hurry all right so I'm gonna try to find the Olympic Discovery Trail again I gotta make a right on Camp David Junior Road are you guys seeing this place it's like the Enchanted Forest foreign [Applause] one minute I'm next to a bunch of traffic and then next I find myself in just total Solitude and peacefulness cool temps nobody around I've been on a low grade incline for a long time just pushing at it [Applause] destroyed I don't know how I made it I had no idea this DNR Campground was here and I was destroyed it like it felt like I was just climbing in that Olympic Trail Without End and then it was getting late on me so I jumped back on 101 and rode for a while got my first flat even though I have slime in my tube and I was pretty much I had no idea what I was going to do I could see nothing on this side of the road that I could camp out and then a DNR Campground comes up and it's just amazing in here it's about 10 o'clock in the morning on a Wednesday September 28th I'm heading towards Forks two forks I was trying to get there yesterday but I had 20 more miles to go and running out of daylight and a busy Road on 101 found the DNR campsite and it's phenomenal it's beautiful it rained most of the late night early morning until now this should be clearing up and getting pretty nice for me to get to uh Forks and my plan was to spend the night there but I'm gonna spend the night there now and regroup and spend four days since I've been camping every night which has been phenomenal and now I need to sort of dry out my stuff and take a shower I don't want to say any more than that and wash my clothes and prepare for the next week or so at least four or five days it should be pretty isolated going south on 101 and into the coast there's some really cool campgrounds on the beach that I'm looking forward to and resupply have no food I actually don't even have water there's not a well here to tap into so I'm gonna dry my tent load up and get on 101 and do the 20 miles nice and easy and take a sort of a chill day I go around twice it makes a big difference foreign [Applause] of course it was raining I don't know why I say this stuff sometimes and it's gorgeous I see the mountains with the clouds clinging to the trees let's do a grocery store here that I can get some water I ran out of water and there's no well in that Campground it's really primitive let's do another day I've got seven miles to go it looks like it rains coming but I don't really understand Northwest Pacific weather yet I've never been around it so I'm kind of taking it in and hard for me to predict not knowing but it looks like it's about to downpour and it doesn't it's just Misty Rain foreign store and met up with David from England he's back there right there we chatted it up for a while he's coming from Vancouver heading to Baja we're gonna ride another seven miles to Forks I'm here with David from the UK from London he's uh been cool enough to let me ride with him for a little while we've been drafting as you've seen and uh David can you tell us where you've been cycling in uh Europe because this is your first time in the US right yeah yes I I've done I've been in the US for like 10 days now but I've done I'm from London UK I've done Scotland I've done Ireland for like two weeks each and then just before I came here I done like Slovenia um like I had a week in the mounts of Slovenia and then another week sort of going around Austria Czech Republic um finally Landing in Prague so that was another couple weeks but it's my first first big trip I've got three months on the road now from Mexico so you started in Vancouver started Vancouver I'm going down the West Coast are you gonna go all the way to the bottom that's the plan to buy yeah that's gonna be cool hopefully you should get there I want to do that sometime I've seen people do it before and it looks like a lot of fun yeah different around here thank you they gave me an amazing deal a government deal I asked for you know if they could cut me a break and they did it looks super clean super nice the town is playing very Americana got about a 40 mile ride to uh the next Campground after that there's nothing for 70 miles so I'll have to hop over by stopping there but I'm looking forward to it too it's right on the water on the beach so it'll be amazing scenery and it is part of the park the national park Olympic let's go do it my clothes are clean all my equipment's all charged up and I got enough food for three four days and loaded up my legs feel amazing compared to how they were before about 15 a mile day yesterday with a lot of rest during the day pre-cooping it was really nice I think it helped me a lot so far so good it's a small shoulder but not bad at all and really really smooth a few cars and trucks all very kind beautiful scenery dry temps cooler it's really nice high pressure system for sure in the 60s thank you it's so quiet out here the cars go by and it's total silence everything changed suddenly it went from a more open space to this really thick forest wet like moist and cold is definitely the rainforest part of this uh Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest it's gorgeous I found the blackberries like as many as you want amazing and they're so sweet they're like you touch them and they come up right away they're like plump and ready to get picked so good that's it I gotta stop I just picked that one on blackberries [Applause] I could have eaten like three times what I ate but I had to make myself stop I'll find them again maybe I'll get a little bit of a dose of blackberries every day all right another 20 miles I think what a day I'm having it's so perfect in here it's like in the 50s temperatures change so fast having a ball what a day I gotta stop and check some of these out foreign how huge is that unbelievable I've never seen a tree this big there's one right here too is that crazy or what this place is ridiculous I can't wait to go see more let's do it what a forest this is I'm like having the best time so beautiful the temperatures everything just feels awesome to ride in this [Music] foreign real close it's called Ruby Beach let's see what it's about I got plenty of time of this day so I can go check out things which is really nice I'm not in a hurry I'm really close to whatever Campground it's nearby I'm in the best mood blackberries on the side of the road giant massive trees ocean views to die for surreal views I cannot wait to see more I'm just getting in here and then there's this Misty fog just coming in from the ocean just rolling through these trees so beautiful foreign the noise of the ocean is going to make me sleep like like I haven't in a long time foreign
