good morning guys and look at this no smoke this is like the first time all summer i have seen this kind of visibility so i'm gonna try to take advantage of this and get up in the air it's been forever so getting back in the saddle shake the cobwebs off and then we're gonna head over and help my brother he's in a dead sprint to get his plane ready for the air races which are next week i'm trent palmer to flight drones for a living and bush planes for fun follow along as i journey off the beaten path of aviation [Music] clear reno's fed airport automated weather observation one five one seven zulu wind calm visibility more than one zero the traffic freedom box taking runway 2-6 at alpha 2 it'll be a right turnout northbound [Music] and it's been a minute since i've been applying some of it's been work some of it's been the smoke and wind and heat but whatever the excuse is i feel rusty so i'm gonna go through my kind of getting back in the saddle feel of the airplane basically i was doing a pretty good climb for a bit there just to get the oil all the way up to temp because it's been a while and then aside from that i normally just work in some dutch rolls make sure i can feel the airplane feel the the ball or you know the seat of the pants keeping the tail behind me the other thing i like to do which sounds silly but i'm surprised how many pilots don't do this but is just pull it back into some slow flight and do some stalls i can't believe how many pilots that you could ask them when's the last time they stalled their aircraft and they're probably gonna tell you oh my last biannual flight review it's not okay get out fly your airplane get used to it because that's honestly when mistakes are made are in the slow flight realm so you need to just stay on top of your uh reactions and make sure that you're doing the right thing and that you're comfortable in slow flight so that's what i'm doing right now so i'm going to go ahead and pull in full flaps just slow it up to i don't know i'm indicating 42 right now i'm gonna go ahead and do a couple turns here at somewhere between 40 and 43 miles an hour and while i'm turning here i might as well pull it all the way up till the break make sure my reaction's good i mean it's just buffeting it's not even wanting to break i'm gonna go ahead and turn the other way let's go ahead and see how slow we can get it a little power in hanging on that prop this is going to give me the most violent break when it breaks 36 35 indicated 34. and so that was the stall i kind of lost feedback in my flapper on so basically the tension that i was feeling it just went loose so that was telling me that i lost airflow over the wing but this plane stalls so uh so nicely it's like a non-event even their power on i was expecting more so anyway let's go get the tires dirty but also i wanted to talk about the air races so air races are coming up next weekend which is why this tfr is coming into effect in a couple days part of why i was rushing to make sure i got out and flew today because i won't have a chance to do it coming up and then also as i mentioned my brother will be racing in his first time this year and he's been doing some stuff to his airplane and he still has a little bit of phase one fly-off to do before then so we're in a bad dash sprint to the finish to get his plane done so i'm gonna go help him with that i unfortunately am not racing in the reno air races this year it was mostly an insurance thing my insurance has been fighting back on any uh demonstrations or competitions that i do they just aren't happy with any of that and i already struggled to get anyone to cover me given what i claim is my whole value on this plane at 125 grand is all i have it claimed at even though i know the plane's worth more than that but uh the other thing is that i've disclosed that i land off field because i figure there's no way for me to hide this so mostly an insurance thing also with the temps at reno and we spent so much time just sitting there on the ramp my engine being turbocharged uh gets extremely hot it basically heat soaks sitting there and uh the intercooler completely ineffective when i'm sitting on the ramp so it's kind of hard on this plane i figure i'll probably race out at high sierra but as far as reno unfortunately i am out this year [Music] this is always a fun spot but yes no uh unfortunately no racing in reno for me this year i will be there though at least friday through sunday i have a job earlier on in the week that'll have me out of town but as soon as i get back i'll be there every single day so i hope i get to see some of you guys out there at reno and for anyone that's thinking of going hasn't bought tickets yet if you go on the air race website and use code trent 10 when you check out it'll get you 10 off so super nice of the air race guys to offer that for my friends anyway re-trim half flaps lay into the throttle blast off out of this oh i love airplanes [Music] so yeah like i mentioned i have not been able to get out flying i think this is actually probably the worst summer i've ever had flying wise just because of the smoke and i feel bad even complaining about it because i know that there's people there's hundreds of people that have lost their homes in these fires not to mention the thousands that are displaced so i'm really not complaining but it definitely has affected my entire flying group's ability to get out and enjoy this summer so i'm excited for cooler weather uh hopefully get those fires out get people back in their houses and get us some better flying weather so we can get out and play more now there's another thing i want to ask you guys about obviously when there's times that i'm not flying uh is there anything you guys want to see i mean obviously i'll show some of the other things i'm interested in which some of you guys are okay with some of you guys hate which i understand you came here for flying but at the same time we all have multiple interests i like sharing everything in life so if there's anything you guys have interest in or would like to see me make a video about go ahead and comment it below because i'm open to ideas and suggestions for when i can't get out and do what i love to do and what you guys love to see which is the flying adventures to shoot i wish i could just be out back country flying and camping all the time and having all these wild adventures but unfortunately that's not always possible so if you guys have any suggestions drop them in the comments below i'm open to them i'm going ifr and for my non-pilot friends ifr is normally instrument flight rules basically the way that i fly is vfr visual flight rules i'm a private pilot i don't have my instrument rating nor is my airplane equipped properly to have uh instrumentation or you know fly under instrument flight rules so all of my flying is going to be vfr visual flight rules the other abbreviation for ifr that we joke about is i follow roads or i follow rivers i follow railroad tracks or other ifrs but while it is a joke that we do follow those it actually has some practical nature because if you were to have an engine out it gives you somewhere to go and land on but also on dirt roads like this it's super good coordination practice to fly relatively low assuming you're a competent pilot you can handle that but giving you a path to follow because it's a lot of good practice keeping your tail in a line coordinated turns low to the ground but it's super good coordination training and all my fellow aviation nerds as i'm scanning my stuff i might as well read out what i'm doing right now so i'm sitting cruising level indicating 84 showing a true air speed of 95 uh engine is sitting at 5000 rpm i'm burning 4.6 gallons an hour and both my oil and coolant temper right at about 200 degrees which this is basically my setup for when i'm not in a rush i'm just putting around having fun cruising at you know 95 100 burning less than five an hour you know what's funny i know that i get a lot of comments of people not liking my music or how i even use music they'd rather hear engine noise well for one i'm no audio engineer i'm not good at recording audio and also it's actually very difficult to get a clean engine noise from inside of this airplane because basically all you're getting is wind noise and you know i'm gonna be honest it doesn't sound that good especially when it comes through your computer or cell phone speakers so as much as i can get the majestic you know roar of an engine on uh on audio or capture that for my videos it's just something i'm not capable of but while on that topic i normally cut out most of the flying in between landings because to me it's boring and here i am just sitting here rambling but do you guys have any interest in seeing more full-length flights and more of that behind the scenes that kind of goes back to what you guys would like to see me show or talk about on this channel so let me know if that's something you guys want to see more of i frankly think it's incredibly boring so uh i basically fall asleep when i'm going through this footage and all the parts where nothing interesting is happening but maybe you guys enjoy seeing a little bit more of the i guess the boring parts of flight but i don't know let me know we're on final this is rocky meadow i think i found this spot i don't know three four years ago since then a lot of people have been frequenting it and that little cheat grass is pretty mowed down in the center of it so you can kind of spot this a mile away it's weird my box is not telling me i have a strong crosswind but my tail is telling me i have a strong crosswind right now crabbing pretty good [Music] this is a fun one pretty rocky it's one of those spots that like you could totally come into with you know 850s or whatever those would be like a 21 inch tire although i wouldn't want to you know bush wheels are kind of like an insurance policy to protect what you don't see and what you might not intend to roll over so this is one of those spots that sure you could but i don't know i'd rather have big tires protects your airframe blast off [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay there's that bank of smoke from the dixie fire looks like we just must have had a little bit of southeast wind and it was blowing it to the north of us but probably i don't know i'd say 12 miles to my west there's just a wall of smoke okay dropping into what i'm going to assume is called dry valley because they call this creek dry valley creek dry valley creek is living up to its name that is not a creek that is a dry creek there's a fun little pinch point here there's also a dam that's built in in between these uh rocks here we won't be able to see it on this one just because just because i flew right over it all right i should probably head back and help my brother as much fun as i'm having i think that's the right thing to do but i'm glad i got out here prior to the air races and got to enjoy some of this nice weather shake the cobwebs off a little bit make sure i still know how to fly but let's go ahead head back oh man that felt good it's been too long anyway i'm gonna get this put away let's go check in on my brother see we can get done today what's up bro ready to work on your plane yeah hardly slept but i guess whoa dude what happened last time i was here this thing was in one piece i mean i had it all back together and it was like ready to go but the starter on that uls is longer so it was hitting the firewall and then i found a crack in the exhaust so she's back apart for a few more little fixes last minute um changing up the oil pressure sensor and a few other little things but what else did you do you did landing gear all that that's what i just did now was the new landing gear and swapped on the bigger radiator so it's a tk1 best landing gear you can get with the dual shocks on both sides and i went with his tail wheel as well oh dude i still don't have that i got to go check that out yeah that thing is sweet we'll get to that um i went with the grove dual puck brakes oh yeah and i'm going with little tires for the races just because they're way way lighter so yeah i'll put on the proper bush wheels after the fact so that's what i was doing right now i guess from the beginning when i was flying it like a year ago um i got this plane so i took this one down for some upgrades and it started out it was just going to be kind of the motor and maybe a new panel and it just one thing led to another new baggage area new fuel system new panel new all new wires i left one cable in there from the altitude encoder to the transponder everything else is brand new yeah show me this panel because this is pretty sweet like he did like the ultimate like kind of budget but like it is ultimate budget panel is what i went for i think i've got about four thousand dollars in this thing all said and done i did it all in solidworks if you guys don't know you can get solidworks for free from eaa um and i did it through sencut sends so they did all the cutting and bending i got an ipad guardian mount centered there where i can run for flight mgl touchscreen radio actually nope um i pulled the battery out to keep it charged we've got a couple of uh engine monitors and ethes over there so avmap one of these is going to be your main instrument the eis and then the other ones are efis and eis yeah so this is the ethis it'll be my artificial horizon and air speed all that kind of stuff magnetic compass this will be my engine monitoring system ngbox yeah yeah see that was sweet yeah and then this is radio yep digital your trim indicator that's sweet so i put it right where i can reach it while i'm on the throttle yeah it's sweet i accidentally did that on the other plane i loved it i found a spot for and that spot just worked really really well so i stuck with it yeah and then i used the backlight rocker switches so that way i didn't have to do a bunch of little labels and stuff yeah it was sweet yeah and then carbon fiber little uh removable panels inset panels for all the switches in case i ever do any upgrades instead of once the glare shield's on you can't really reach behind um i took it back off this week but for the most part if i need to do any work i'll pull this off and just be able to access all my switches and be able to pop in new switches or anything i need to do i can do from the front smart yeah let's get some work done kevin also just had a last-second call with the dennis because he had a root canal what that went bad that he needed a new one didn't realize they'd be able to get them in today so we're like super rushed you gotta be out of here in a couple hours to do that which is gonna be fun it'll be super fun and i'll be back afterwards i'm sure but uh we'll see what we can get done in the meantime oh look at that thing so this is tony's tk1 tail wheel suspension which doesn't take up as much space so basically it doesn't kill your angle of attack as much as the t3 which is what i have on mine also it's way more robust i've broken mine a couple times just because it's not really that robustly built tony makes great products i'm sure that thing's strong as could be and it went down and so i had to use another plane today that i've never flown in before and it's different and but i was like you know what [Music] i'm getting up there and getting this thing and went out and it went so smooth it it went like perf like a piece of cake and um when we cleared and got on the taxi wet like on a taxiway we cleared it and oh my goodness that feeling oh yeah and then he gave me a piece of paper a temporary pilot certificate but um oh my oh i'm so happy to hear that congratulations sarah i feel like suddenly exhausted exuberant overwhelmed oh man so at some point i gotta come out there to nevada or wherever you are and i gotta fly with you or something oh yes we're making that happen okay yeah and you get a bic because you are now officially a pilot awesome awesome well so happy to hear that are you gonna go fly by i mean you can go take are you going to take someone for a ride i'm trying to think of what i first did when i got my license i think i took my wife up flying it or something what what's your first plan oh i don't know i haven't thought that far question it's like the world is mine yeah um i don't know i might i don't know we'll see i'll let you know i'll keep you updated on my first flight as a private pilot yeah awesome oh it was tough um when i failed my first time uh i left and i was i was upset at myself because i know what to do you know what i mean and so when you do it wrong then you're like me and i was so stupid i should have done this you know i should have pushed harder on the stall and uh cause that's what i did it was the power off stall that i it was it wasn't enough right rudder okay so um so i i leave the airport and i was crying and a police officer pulled me he thought i was intoxicated i was like i'm not intoxicated i just filled my check right he was like well can you take it again i was like yeah he's like well just take it again so i left there and i was like i'm just gonna go make myself feel better i'm gonna go get some sushi so i go buy a 15 sushi roll and on my way out the door it's no joke i drop it and it spills everywhere and i was like so at that point i kind of just giggled to myself was like okay i see what's going on um it was just one of those days yes and then i got the news that the plane that i've been flying in got a bird strike to the horizontal stabilizer so i was like all right oh but anyway i'm here and i got it and it's uh thank you so much yeah i mean i i made a video and i filmed my family's reaction and everything and one of the things is i took it and showed my grammy and pop and they had been isolated from covet and we were the first people they saw this was like in april for like six months and came in and talked to him and showed him that video and my granny looked at me and she's like you know i can tell that this guy genuinely cares and i just really appreciate your support and the scholarship and oh i can't wait to see the next person yeah i'm excited about the next person if you do this again you know yeah they just know that feeling i know that feeling when you get it yeah anyway no and like i said this couldn't have gone to a better person and i'm so happy to see that i'm gonna go celebrate tonight and live it up i'm gonna be celebrating for you over here too so all right all right thank you so much and uh we'll talk soon and i'll make sure i let you know what i'm gonna do with my first uh flight as a pilot yeah sounds good all right bye all right bye sir good quick movement on kevin there he saw that i was getting that phone call and decided it was worth filming so i'm glad you guys got to hear that for yourselves congratulations sarah that is awesome i'm so glad that the pilot's license thing worked out she is now the world's newest pilot and doesn't even know what she's going to do for her first flight as a private pilot so stoked sharing our love for aviation the best way i knew how so anyway we're going to get back to work hopefully get this thing closer to ready before kevin goes to his dentist appointment hey you want to know something what's the best time to see the dentist tooth hurty come on all right now i know it doesn't look like it but so a good amount of time has passed and we've been just tripping over little things so overall not all that successful did get a couple of extra sensors wired up found a break in a different wire and got a few extra things clamped down but not the most success it'll be a late night yeah get her wrenched up and running in time for the races one way or another yeah just less sleep well have fun good luck at your root canal i can't say have fun at that but good luck we ran out of time either way i'll come back and help you tomorrow all right thanks brother speaking appreciate it bring some fuel yeah well that was not the most successful of a day working on kevin's airplane but i did get to go flying this morning first time in a long time and sarah passed her check ride so i'm gonna consider today a success overall and just to remind you guys this was something that we all did together so i am so proud of what we have done as a community to not only get sarah her pilot's license through that giveaway but we also raised almost a quarter million dollars to save the reno air races in the process but really quick though before i go i do want to give a big thank you and shout out to the sponsor of this video skillshare and skillshare for those that don't know is an online learning community for creative and curious individuals they've got thousands of inspiring classes for creators they've got classes on everything from photo and video to music production to interior and graphic design illustration and more and one thing a lot of people like to ask me about is camera stuff what kind of cameras should i get what kind of cameras do i use for the video stuff and i continue to tell people stop worrying about the camera start learning how to use it that's where skillshare comes in honestly a lot of us tend to forget that we have a perfectly good camera right in our pocket on our cell phone so anyone that is wondering how to get a little bit better at doing film work or video work i highly suggest you take the skillshare course iphone filmmaking create cinematic video with your phone from caleb and niles they're both filmmakers over at moment and the good thing about skillshare is that it's specifically created for learning so their video courses have zero ads they're broke up into pretty small bite-sized pieces so you're gonna be able to fit it into any schedule so you can keep learning keep growing us as humans we can't get stagnant you cannot let that muscle of your brain go weak so the first 1000 of my subscribers to click the link below are going to get a free one month trial of skillshare so you can explore your creativity thank you again skillshare for sponsoring this video i'm trying to think of what else i've got a job before the air races so i will be going out of town racing back for the air races so i hope to see a bunch of you guys at the air races keep an eye out for me i'll be there friday through sunday so if you see me make sure to give me a high five and i think i'm gonna wrap this one up here like this video if you do subscribe if you haven't come be my wingman see on the next one peace
