hey y'all i'm angela walters and i'm excited to be back home from my trip to alaska we had so much fun and we made some memories and i'm sure we'll remember forever but as much fun as we had it's so nice to be back home and if there's one thing that i've learned from traveling is that re-entry into real life is hard it's not like you get a day or two to ease your way back into it no it's like you're dropped off the airplane you start running and you're just trying to catch up with everything that has piled up while you've been gone i get tired just thinking about it and this week is no different it's a busy week i'm leaving for canada in two weeks so this next week i'm going to be packing getting ready for a regional quilt festival i'm teaching at but the big thing that's on the top of my to-do list is to finish this quilt for tula pink surely you know who tula pink is fabric designer awesome personality i'm privileged to get to quilt her quilts for her and to get to call her friend this week i need to finish up her bloomers quilt before i head out of town so i thought it'd be fun to take you in on the process and let you see what goes into working on one of her quilts the quilts i'm working on is called bloomers and she english paper pieced it so that all the little pieces of fabric are fussy cut and make beautiful arrangements and that's why i love quilting our quilts i get to work with so much fun detail tula and i have collaborated for several years we have worked on so many quilts i don't even know if i could think of them all right now we've actually wrote a book together called quilt with tula and angela and she also only lives about an hour from me so we get together for coffee quite regularly especially when we're doing the quilting drop off or pick up now this quilt we've already talked about how she wants it quilted and the one thing that she really wants the quilting to emphasize are the ring of solid stars around those beautiful prints what i love about working with her is that she never tells me exactly what to do she gives me a direction and lets me run with it so it's always fun to come up with new and interesting ways to quilt her quilts so that i can try to surprise her each time now i have her quilt loaded and i'm ready to start quilting and while i approach all my quilts the same there are a few things i do slightly different with toothless quilts the first thing i do is that i always use two layers of batting on her quilts the reason i love to use two layers of batting is that when she's hanging or displaying them at quilt market or trunk shows it's going to make them lay nice and flat and kind of really take away any of those creases plus it gives the quilting a little bit more of an especially with all the dense quiltings i love to do on her quilts another thing that i do slightly different on her quilts is i pay a lot of attention to the placement of the fabrics she usually spends a lot of time coming up with these really beautiful orientations so first up i have to decide the thread and this is actually something i usually pick out before i even think about quilting designs because since i do so much dense quilting on her quilts i have to use a thread color that's going to match so that it doesn't overwhelm the fabric i mean as much as she loves me and loves my quilting the main point of this is to show off her beautiful fabric prints and what better place to select from than the tula pink thread collection just kidding i can't bring myself to open the threads in here i just like to open it up and pet it every so often so i have my first thread colors and i'm going to go ahead [Music] [Music] okay so i've been at it for three minutes but i wanted to show you how much progress i've made so i've got the first part of the red done but the thing about her fabrics is she used so many different colors that means i have to change threads to quilt this little guy right here isn't he so cute but even though it can be time consuming i think it's so important if the quilting enhances the quilt top so it's just a part of quilting the quilt so i'm going to change threads and keep moving on i'll check back within a little bit to show you how it's going so i'm about 30 minutes into it and i'm finished with the quilt oh come on you know i'm joking there i wish it was that fast not quite but i was going to show you a little bit about what i've got done now whenever i work on her quilts i try to always change it up because i get bored easily and i know that she loves a lot of detail so here i've added some feathers i haven't quilted these orange ones yet i'll have to come back to that in a minute but look at the little kitties and the cat food and this is how you know that she is amazing that is one teeny tiny itty-bitty piece and she cut that out and sewed it together i just i know that i will never be making a quilt like this soon so okay so as you can tell i'm working on this quilt in my home studio i usually prefer working at the shop because that means i get to leave home and go to work and have that really nice clear separation but since i'm going to be home for the weekend it means that maybe i can get a little bit more done and squeeze it in a little bit time having the quilt at home is nice because i can come up here and quilt anytime it's also nice because i can always be around my children that's right if they need me for any reason they can stop in at any time and i can help them i can be here to tuck them in when it's time for bed or brush their hair or just listen to them when they're telling me about their day [Music] i'm just kidding my kids are perfect angels [Music] so i haven't been making as much progress as i would like unfortunately real life tends to get in the way of my quilting time i've almost got it done i could probably finish it tonight if i stay up pretty late good thing i like being up after hey i have to be kind of quiet because everybody's asleep it is so late but i had to share that i'm finally done with the quilt now i'm gonna have to take it off tomorrow because i want to show you the whole quilt and all this beautiful detail but right now i just want to do a little happy dance because it's finally finished i'm going to turn the lights off and i'm heading to bed i'll see you tomorrow well look at that it's daytime outside it's actually pretty late in the morning i may have slept in now that i'm wide awake i can finally take the quilt off the frame so that you and i can see what it looks like this is actually my favorite part about quilting a quilt taking it off the frame and getting to see the whole thing in its entirety for the first time let's do it well i think we can call this a success i love how it turns out which if i'm being honest that doesn't happen all the time i mean it always happens with two those quilts but there are times i quilt designs and i think man i probably should have done something different or i wish it looked a little bit not like that but this one turned out great i especially love how the two layers of batting allows that quilting to pop up just a little bit more so you can really see the texture of all the designs that i've added to the quilt now all i have to do is trim the threads fold it up and get it to her so fingers crossed she loves it as much as i do thank you so much for watching i hope you'll leave comments below letting me know what you think or what things you'd like to see me include in future episodes so next week i'm heading to canada and i can't wait to share my fun adventure with you happy quilting
