hey guys I'm tulip ink and I'm here today to talk to you about line work my newest collection for free spirit fabrics so when I sit down to design a fabric line when I'm trying to figure out what the whole things about I'm trying to accomplish two things right off the bat one challenge myself artistically and design wise and - how can I surprise you what is the one thing you expect from me what's the one thing you know is coming and that's color and so I thought what can I do to really surprise you I can take color away and leave just the quality of the drawing just the designs what I ended up with is several prints in black and white that are actually 17 color prints so each piece is designed as a black and white print but then it hombres in color a rainbow of 15 different colors in each print plus black plus white so it starts out pink here goes to red orange yellow green blue purple and then at the halfway point goes back to pink and through the whole range of colors again so the idea of being that even if you were to get a fat quarter of any of these prints every fat quarter will essentially hold all the colors of the collection so I started here with this zebra because you can't really do a black and white fabric collection without zebras obviously and I gave each one of their stripes a little color and then the inside of their ears a little color and then instead of just putting them like in grass or something because this is fabric it's not reality so I can do whatever I want I just had them walking on stars because obviously that seems like the most magical thing to do then we have I thought what other black and white animals could there be well a skunk obviously but I feel like skunks have gotten a really bad rap they're super stinky and that's all anyone ever talks about in addition to being super stinky they're also super cute so I wanted to give them a little bit of like I don't know a little skunk rebranding maybe so I made my skunk completely out of flowers so they're still stinky but now there's thinking in a nice way and the same thing that I did with the Zebras when you open up the fabric selvedge to selvedge it starts out in orange yellow green blue purple yellow and then goes all the way back to the color again and starts again so even if you were to get a smaller cut of this piece you'd still get the whole rainbow so our next black-and-white animal is the panda pandas are super adorable and I have this little surprised adorable looking panda and then right above his head is like sort of a little thought bubble that's like OMG I love you and his ears actually make up the empty spaces that are in the scallops that surround him so he fits perfectly he's a little scalloped panda this is probably one of my favorite pieces in the whole collection so this is the lemur the lemur has a lot of texture in and of himself but then he's in a tree that has a lot of texture and the only way to make it so that you could see the tree and the Lemur was to give the background a color so the interior or the background of it so the Lemur itself is shaded with little tiny pinstripes and then the background is a little tiny pin dots so it looks like it's almost like a grey background but it's actually little teeny teeny teeny tiny dots and then the dots enlarge and become big and full of color and it's almost like the fruit in the trees and this piece is sort of maybe the focal of the collection if there is such a thing is the white peacock and I know white peacock is a little stretch when we're talking about black and white animals but they're real real pretty and real real fun to draw there's two rows of peacocks so this peacock all the little hearts that are in the feathers and go to the center of this part of the design are in cool colors and then the next one is all in warm colors I always sit around and I always have my pile of sketches that I worked on to actually draw each piece and I thought how cool if I could give everybody my entire thought process on fabric and that's what this piece actually is so you'll see it's all done on this sort of aqua colored grid which is just the paper I draw and I draw on a gridded paper it's all of my pencil sketches and illustrations but then also on this piece is all of the notes that I wrote down while I was designing it so there's a list of all the animals I considered and why I kept some and why I didn't how I was going to draw things how I was going to approach the design but I liked it so much I thought what if we blew it up and you could really see it on a hundred and eight inch wide backing so this is also a non-directional 108 inch wide quote backing on our gorgeous cotton sateen that we all love so much because really truly you should put the best thing on the back of your quilt because that's the part that touches your skin just my opinion a whole bunch of focal animal pieces on their own doesn't make a really interesting quilt there's always those pieces you need that have little designs little motifs little geometric everything can't be a lemur or a panda as much as I would desperately like it to be you need those other pieces to make a really successful quilt and so what we've done in the second half of this fabric collection is taken my most popular true colors designs which are the designs that kind of are designed to go with everything they're medium to small scale prints that are interchangeable from fabric line to fabric line and we've taken those and redone them in black and white so we have our hexie rainbow in black and white and again you're gonna get a repeat of color four times from selvedge to selvedge in this piece of fabric and then we have our mineral prints in black and white so we did a black line on a white ground I mean a black and white stripe cuz duh we have a black dot on white oh wait dot on black and then two of the last pieces that we put in this collection that were so important to the overall collection in order to make successful quilts and successful projects I really felt like we needed a solid white and a solid black but solid white and solid black are about the most boring things in fabric ever on planet Earth so I thought how can we take a solid black and a solid white that will achieve the same goals but make it more interesting and so what we've done is we've printed what's called a pigment ink which is a no peek of an opaque ink that sits on top of the cloth and printed white on white bird stars hearts dots little shapes it acts as a solid but there's something more to it so what as you get closer to it you see that there's some design in it you see that there's some extra it's kind of like the best possible alternative to a solid black and a solid white so in addition to bolted yardage which we all need we've provided you we've come up with a couple of pre-cut options also that contain the whole collection so the design role contains everything in the collection it's 42 strips that are two and a half inches wide and 4445 inches long we've doubled up on the pieces that I felt like would be the most useful to you in quilting so we've doubled up on especially all the background pieces the sketchy print the white on white the black on black the dots but you'll get at least three pieces of everything in the line and then a fourth piece of some of the ones that I feel like are the most useful we have the little two-inch hexagon cut so this is really cool for English paper piecing the perfect sized English paper pieced hexagons for this is a two inch hexagon if you wanted to double in that we have the 5 inch charm which are precisely cut 5 inch squares of everything in the collection with doubles and triples of the most useful pieces of course the fat quarter bundle this is such a great place to start because you get just one fat quarter of every single thing in the collection and you can do so much with it there's so many quotes you can make so many projects you can make out of just a fat quarter so this is 13 fat quarters and the 10 inch arm so this is 10 inch squares again precisely cut with everything in the line with triples sometimes quadruples of some of the most useful pieces these are five pre-cut options that'll give you a little bit of everything and it's a really great place to start when you're not sure what you want more of this is the daybreak quote kit this pattern will only be available in the kit one of the things that I wanted to highlight about the fabric when I designed this quilt was how you can break down each print into a smaller color story I only cut the Zebras out of sort of the orange section of the rainbow ombre and I was able to do that with each piece and then border it with so with a complimentary piece from true colors so this uses really really simple sewing techniques it's half square triangles strips and basic block sewing and a cool thing to see in here is that this isn't actually a black solid so this is our black on black so from a distance it looks like it's set on a black background but as you come up close to it you see the little black on black stars birds dots hearts and all the little shapes each piece has more of a focal design in the middle so your zebras your pandas your lemurs and I fussy cut those to a degree but I didn't spend a ton of time fussy cutting them because the way the fabrics designed anywhere you cut will pretty much give you what you're looking for and then bordered it in one of the more simple designs so like the true colors designs the dots the stripes the black and white to color pieces are bordered around each focal piece and then there's a coordinating one inch strip of color from my true colors collection which came out in January that borders and highlights the color in each print so this is essentially a lop size quilt it's called a brick and it'll come in a prepackaged kit from free spirit y'all know I love Annie from patterns by Annie so I decided to make a couple of her patterns out of the linework collection to see how it all work together one of the first things I made was this is the ultimate travel bag from by Annie and it's one of my favorite patterns to make to show off fabric because we have big open areas then we have pockets that I can fussy cut and then I have all of these different pieces that I can use different parts of the collection to see how it all works together when I was picking the pieces I knew I wanted this lemur print which is my personal favorite as the main part of the bag and I knew I was gonna bind it in the stripe because why not but when I was picking the pieces that go with it so all the little trim pieces I was trying to figure out what I was gonna use and what I decided to use was this black on white polka dot and what I love about it is that the actual background of this lemur print is tiny polka dots and then the polka dot on the trim pieces and on the sides are the big polka dots so it almost looks like this part is a zoom-zoom-zoom in version of the background of this piece which I thought was kind of a cool sort of optical illusion and then of course I put these neon yellow neon yellow and green strapping on it because I love color and that's color this is my new sort of travel sewing set so the other piece I made is this bag called the zip it up bag and I use the same color handles on this and I used the little skunk print here but what I love is that when you open it up you get the full range of color and then on the inside its little zipper pieces so we've got a clear vinyl pocket plus a mesh pocket over here and when it came time to trim the zippers up here I used actually a piece from my true colors collection and I use this really pale aqua fairy dust print and I came to that color by pulling it from the grid behind the sketchy print that is the base of each pocket so it's actually the same blue color and then the bigger version made in the same way using the pandas so you get the full rainbow when it's open wide and then inside I have great big pockets lined with my favorite sketchy print and trimmed with that same aqua blue and that's why word [Music]
