they really don't have a moral code and in their mind the end justifies the means a narcissist will deceive somebody just to get away with it hi this is jim breon welcome to this youtube channel where we talk about all things mental health the topic today is something i had questions about wanting to understand the difference between narcissism and machiavellianism um machiavellianism that's that's something that if you can say that word 10 times real fast you get extra points the term itself actually comes from an italian philosopher who was famous for writing a book back in like 1532 called the prince which was basically a treatise on how to obtain ultimate power and hang on to power really kind of how to become a despot and the term machiavellianism refers to really not a not a disorder but more of a trait similar to narcissism really a cluster of behaviors and attitudes where a person is extremely deceitful calculating and exploitive and they think that all of these behaviors and attitudes are normal machiavellianism is is one of the traits that is part of something that we refer to as the dark triad the dark triad is a series of traits that make up a very dangerous psychological profile and that is the combination of machiavellianism that deceitful cunning cold calculated trait along with narcissism the grandiosity self-servingness manipulative behaviors as well as psychopathy somebody who has zero empathy and when you have those three combinations it makes very very dangerous profile so to talk about the differences between narcissism that we talk a lot about and machiavellianism a machiavellian person is better in control of their emotions and less rageful than a narcissist they have a very cynical view of humanity and they're actually much more likely to commit crimes to break laws because why not the laws don't apply to them they really don't have a moral code and in their mind the end justifies the means a narcissist will try to justify their behaviors a person with machiavellian traits doesn't feel like they have to because the laws don't apply to them a narcissist will deceive somebody just to get away with it in order to gain sympathy or maybe admiration machiavellian this is somebody who will deceive just to gain power specifically financial gain or political power and they're actually less interested in fame than they are power they can be very deceptive manipulative um they have a gross disregard for people and they're highly disagreeable they just don't get along with people these are people that can be very cunning they hide their emotions and they hide their motives but they do have better impulse control than a narcissist with narcissism the person is extremely self-centered they have an inflated sense of self-importance they have a high level of egotism vanity lack of empathy and they might be quick to anger and to lashing out machiavellianism the traits are much more deceptive and manipulative to reach a person's goal they can be exploitive and manipulative and no sense of morality and they can be very patient and calculating they'll delay gratification in order to get the bigger payoff down the line again they can be very ruthless and they're willing to do anything to gain power and to hold on to power this is a dynamic that we often see in politicians and i think that we've been able to see that play out in real time in the recent future not just in the united states but in countries in eastern europe and in russia so machiavellianism the person has these fantasies of power financial success um they have a very cold and cynical outlook on humanity and often have some paranoia and are very mistrustful they really think that the world is a dark dangerous kill or be killed place and that's the way that they treat people the way that they respond to threats is much less with anger than a narcissist a machiavellian person is very ruthless attracted to new and unregulated uh ventures like businesses they really like the the wild west attitude where they can kind of make up the laws as they go along they're willing to break the rules and but they do weigh the consequences first they kind of think that all people are criminals but you're really not a criminal until you get caught they can often be very dominant socially very goal oriented and a lot less impulsive than a narcissist whereas a machiavellian person will lie to gain materially a narcissist will lie just for the reward of gaining self-esteem or inflating their ego again a machiavellian trait this is somebody that hides their intentions they're very cloak and dagger they they lay low and they wait until they're going to strike and they also have something that we refer to as schadenfreude they really take pleasure in other people's pain and misery ultimately a lot of these people fail to succeed in forming relationships because they're so disagreeable they're so uncooperative and inflexible they end up alone often and often if this becomes a political leader these are the people that often end up being killed or tried by their own people because they finally turn on them when you have the dark triad of those three things narcissism psychopathy and machiavellianism this is a very dangerous triad because it often includes sadism and paranoia as far as the traits how they show up in people it's more often in men that are driven by power you tend to see them in younger people and a lot of times they engage in what's what's called instrumental sex they they will manipulate people and and be sexual with people in in order to gain something they're generally extroverts they have very immature defense mechanisms they can be very materialistic selfish and have almost a toxic positivity that they don't like to think anything negative about themselves they just have this belief that if i just keep plowing through the way i am everything is going to turn out the way i want it to be they're very low in conscientiousness and very low in compassion and empathy and they really don't trust in the goodness of people because they generally see the world as a cutthroat place um much the way that they show up in the world it's a really interesting contrast between narcissism and machiavellianism but i hope this helps to make a little more sense a little more clarity understanding the two different types of personality traits if you have any further questions i feel free to leave comments in the comment section um send me a message let me know what you think and
