morning everyone how's everyone doing doing well praise god good to see every one of you we are almost done with the series on hebrews and it's been a long journey but we're all we're almost there so be in prayer for the next series we're we will be looking at the attributes of god uh how discovering who god is and demonstrating that those characteristics in in the world and so when we look at what's happening in the culture around us when you look at this ever ever-changing world that we live in it's good to know that we have a god who never changes good to know that jesus remains the same yesterday today and forever so we are going through this book hopefully they're able to to put it up on the screen pretty soon but the the book of hebrews is divided into three parts as you know the first part of course talks about the superiority of the person of jesus christ he was addressing those who were in danger of going back to judaism he was addressing those who were discouraged wanted to throw in the towel and go back to judaism because of the persecution that they were experiencing so he tells them jesus is superior to anything that you find in the old testament he is superior to the prophets he is superior to the angels he is superior to moses he is superior to the levitical priesthood he is a priest of a a better covenant and so he says that we we are to remain steadfast because of what we have in jesus christ there are no more upgrades he's the last and he's the greatest he is the best and then in the middle part he talks about he focuses on the priesthood of jesus christ that he is not from the levitical priesthood he is from the priesthood of melchizedek he's a he is a priest of peace he's a priest of righteousness and unlike the the high priest and the past that had to offer up sacrifices from themselves he offered a perfect sacrifice in himself and because of that we're able to have access to the holy of holies because of that we are able to find help and mercy in time of need but he spends all that time so that we get to the end when we get to the part that we are studying now when he says looking to jesus the author and finisher for our faith we go wow what was i thinking what was i why did i ever think of quitting because we have just been given this amazing picture detailed picture of not only who jesus is but what he's done for us in chapter 12 pastor eric began by talking about running the race with endurance looking to jesus and i continued by talking about our conduct in the kingdom if you want to endure we need to understand that we are kingdom people and we need to understand that all the kingdoms of the this world are like sand castles they will all be one day swept away by the mighty hand of god that's why it says in revelation the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our lord and of his christ and he shall reign forever and ever and we are part of that kingdom so last week he encourages by saying therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken and thus let us offer to god acceptable worship with reverence and awe this small group of people this church was being shaken by rome and so he tells them you know rome was powerful it is as it is one of these days rome will be shaken one of these days rome will disappear but the kingdom that you are part of is forever it is unshakable and therefore you could face the future with hope you could face the future with confidence you do not have to be afraid this morning the author talks about as he ends this this great book he talks about a lot of different topics and we'll try to pull them all together but before we do that let's look to the lord in prayer our loving heavenly father we we are so grateful for the fact that we are sinners saved by grace we thank you that our salvation does not depend on what we do it depends on what jesus has done for us that father we thank you that we are clothed with the righteousness of jesus christ we thank you lord that we are pleasing in your sight not because of anything that we have done but because of jesus perfect work on the cross and so we pray lord that we as we look into your word that you through your spirit would speak to our hearts i press i pray that you would cause changes in our attitudes in our perception of of things around us that as a result lord we would endure to the end that father we would be able to finish the race well for these things we asked in jesus name amen i noticed that this year so many of us and this church have gone on vacations and many of us went to hawaii i i know while i was in in hawaii there were several members of our church who were there as well when you go on vacation one of the things that you have to do is you have to pack and i notice that there are two types of packers one one who packed things really neatly you know by categories all the shirts on one side all the socks on another things neatly roll up then there are people who pack like this what we have an hour before the plane leaves just throw everything in the in the suitcase and then you try to stomp on it so that it will close how many of you pack neatly can i see it oh yeah okay so few of you how many of you are messy packers you just throw everything in you know just as long as i have everything i need you know it's okay we just iron it when we get to the hotel you guys do that yeah how many are in between you know you kind of need a little bit and messy a little bit yeah that's me so this last vacation i tried to pack neatly i tried to put all the shirts neatly folded on one side and all the socks roll it up and then you just put it there and then i wanted to bring some things that didn't fit in any of those categories i want to bring my bike helmet oh my god this doesn't fit anywhere i'm just going to stuff it in you know i can then i wanted to go fishing so i had a fishing reel how am i going to put that i'm just going to put it oh inside the helmet let me put the fishing rail inside the helmet and it didn't fit any categories but i needed it for my trip think when you look at chapter 13 it's kind of like the author packing all the things that you need for the trip it doesn't fit neatly in the category and it's not like the the malcus the priesthood of melchizedek you know chapter once the the fates hall of fame chapter 11 all the all these things need fit neatly but then all of a sudden all these things that he had to say so he just puts it all in chapter 13. now unlike for me i put all those things in for my enjoyment but he begins to add all these principles and all these commands for your endurance it doesn't fit neatly in any category but it is necessary for the journey get it say got it okay good okay so this is all the things that you need to pack in order to make it through the trip now four categories you need to pack compassion commitment contentment and compliance so those are the four things that are not in neat categories but they just kind of go all over the place but you need it for the journey so first of all he says be compassionate be loving in verse 1 he said let brotherly love continue so we are to love our brothers we are not to neglect going to church but when we show up we have to have an attitude of compassion we have an attitude of loving one another now the problem is when pastors say we need to love one another most of us will say amen because we know it's in the bible but who are the people that we think of the people we already love we don't think of the person that's difficult to love don't want to like abrasive personality but those are the very people that god commands us to love because if they're easy to love he wouldn't put it here i like the way saddleback pastor rick warren says these are the people who are egr people you know what egr stands for extra grace required every church has their own set of egrs maybe that's me i don't know but we need we need to to do that why because that's the mark that you have been born again that's the mark that you are a believer what does it say in first john 3 14 now let's read this together you want it ready ready to read okay everyone okay everyone let's read this together we know that we have passed out of death into life because we love the brothers whoever does not love abides in death ah how do i know that you're alive spiritually how do i know that you're really a christian by your by your love that's how we know it's not easy that's why he commands it but he never commands us anything without giving us the ability to do that so when we are trying to love egr people it's because of god's grace in us that we're able to love them amen all right so we are we are to love brothers in fact it says the world knows that we're believers by what when they come into the fellowship they see our love for one another because by this all people will know that you are my disciples if you have a fish sticker in your bumper if you carry bible around if you attend church if you give to the offering no none of that how do i know that you're a believer how does the world know that there's something different about this group it says if you have love for one another you have love for one another i remember this pastor one time he was preaching on love so he stands up and he he just says to the congregation love one another and he sits down and people go wow what a message next sunday he gets up again and he says love one another and then people start to complain hey pastor you did that last week and how come you're doing that again oh you say the same thing and then he asked them a question are you loving one another it's one thing to hear it it's one thing to know it it's another thing to what to do it to demonstrate it so he says we are to be loving we are to love the brothers and then secondly we are to love even strangers we are to show hospitality the word hospitality literally means lovers of strangers it says do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers for thereby some have entertained angels unaware and so he's he tells them in the society that they live in there are people who were getting or at least in their church there were people who were losing their homes so what do you do about these brothers and sisters in the lord who who don't have a place to live well you take them in and in those days they had evangelists itinerant evangelists and preachers who would go from town to town and back then they didn't have a motel 6 didn't have a marriage holiday inn in fact the places that you go to back then they're kind of seedy they're kind of the way my kids would describe they're kind of sketchy and so you need to be able to watch out for these evangelists or preachers who need a place to stay and you need to open your home to them in fact one of the things that you see one of the themes in the gospels or in the in the epistles is this whole theme of showing hospitality paul says in romans 12 13 contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality peter says show hospitality to one another without grumbling now i have to admit i wasn't always good at this because my dad who is a pastor knew a lot of pastors in the philippines pastors and missionaries and whenever any one of those people would come to san francisco where they guess where they stayed in my house and get guests who got kicked out of their room me and so i would always get kicked out of my room and so at first you know there was a time i go wow again i kicked out again in my room but looking back those pastors and missionaries i mean i was so blessed by their testimony because i would eat breakfast with them or i would eat we would eat dinner together and they would tell such amazing stories of faith that up to this day has shaped me up to this day has blessed me and so god when when you offer hospitality it is actually something that blesses you as well because you're exercising your your resources to help the body out and god is pleased with that so love the brethren and it says without grumbling by the way i was like oh man gotta host bible study again i gotta clean the house again i gotta cook again without grumbling we are to open up our house we are to share meals with one another we are to look out for those who who are who who need help especially in the body of christ and we are to offer our resources to them without complaining without grumbling what else we are to show love to to brothers we are to show love to strangers we are to show love to those who are in prison it says remember those who are in prison as though in prison with them and those who are mistreated since you are also are in the body so we are part of one body of christ and when one one part of it hurts we all hurt we're all affected and so we are to remember them we are to pray for them we are to minister to them in fact they were doing that if you look at if you remember chapter 10 it says but recall the former days when you were enlightened you endured a heart struggle with sufferings sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction and sometimes being partners with those so treated for you had compassion on those in prison so they were they were doing this in the past and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property and so here in the past they were suffering with these people and they were visiting them and they were ministering to them but maybe after a while they got tired they're visiting people and opening up your home there are times when when you get weary when you get tired and so we're saying no in order for us to finish well we must not get tired we must not get weary of doing well we must continue to love one another one of the things that we do in our prayer meeting is we pray for those who are being persecuted and we actually that that's the verse that we use in our heading for our prayer meeting but if you want to pray more intelligently for those who are in prison check out persecution.com the voice of martyrs and you'll you could follow a link and they will give you a free global prayer guide they will tell you hot spots in the world they will tell you what's happening with the pastors or missionaries in that area and they will tell you how to pray for them now do you know for instance that one of the most dangerous places to be a christian in in the world is north korea that's wonderful but it informs you so that you know what our brothers and sisters around the world are facing the persecution that they are encountering so one of the things that we are to pack in the bag to finish is what be compassionate be loving secondly be committed to marriage and purity it says in verse 4 let marriage be held in honor among all this this area of marriage and how christians looked at it in the early church was one of the distinguishing features of believers and he says hold it in honor marriage should be honored we are to regard it highly we are to to to protect it now how do we dishonor marriage marriage is dishonored first of all by divorce not justified or not because our commitment is till death do us part that's one of the one of the the biggest lies every year that people say to each other till death do a sport 5 000 arguments later i'm tired of you i'll look for someone else and so marriage is is dishonored by divorce marriage is dishonored by living together outside of marriage you are not married until you're married loving each other or being engaged is not the same thing as marriage when jesus was talking to the woman at the welsh he said to her go call your husband she said i have no husband. jesus says you're right in saying you have no husband for you have had five husbands and then he says and the one that you are living with now is not your husband and so jesus makes a distinction between being in a legal marriage and simply living together it's not the same thing just because you love each other doesn't mean you could live together marriage is also dishonored by adultery and we'll he'll talk more about that later so both premarital sex and extramarital sex is something that he forbids what else marriage is dishonored when we try to redefine marriage what is the biblical definition of marriage the biblical definition of marriage is one man one woman one lifetime don't forget the last part because many times we espouse so vehemently so strongly the fact that it's what between one man and one woman but we forget what jesus says what god has put together let no man put us under or let no man separate and so when we talk about the honoring marriage the biblical definition is one man one woman one lifetime what else we are not only to be committed to marriage we are to be committed to purity he says let marriage be held in honor among all and let marriage the marriage bed be undefiled let the marriage bed be undefiled of course the phrase bed here is a euphemism for sexual intercourse and he says it is to be undefiled and he's speaking of sexual purity now the bible is not shy about talking about sex after all it is god who created sex but it not only talks about the beauty of sex it talks about the boundary and again and again it warns us in fact in first thessalonians 4 3 you want to know the will of god you know some people say i want to know the will of god in my life well this is one of them it says for this is the will of god your sanctification that you abstain from sexual immorality that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor that's that word again not in the passion of lust like the gentiles who do not know god so when you see how the world views sex and you see it on tv you see it on movies well the bible doesn't blame them because they don't know any better but he says you are to be different that's why it says that no one transgressed and wronged his brothers in this matter because the lord is an avenger in all things as we told you beforehand and solemnly warn you why is it that god so strongly says no to sex outside of marriage because he's the one that created sex and he knows how it best functions now in order for you to be stronger in your resolve to sexual purity you need to understand what is the purpose of sex in the bible anyway do you know what is the purpose why did god create sex there's five reasons that he created sex first of all he creates it for propagation of procreation genesis 1 22 says and god blessed them saying be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas and let the verse multiply on the earth that the words multiply under so i said be fruitful and multiply it's for propagation what's the second region it is for intervention in other words it is to keep men and women from sinning it says now concerning this matter about which you wrote it is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman in other words it's good if you could if you could live a celibate life and you could you could be single so that you could serve the lord better but not everyone could do that not ever not everyone is given the gift of singlehood or celibacy that says but because of the temptation to sexual immorality knows what he says each man should have his own wife and each woman should have her own husband so intervention so that we have a proper place to express our sexual desire there's a third reason and i'm gonna talk more about this later it is for unification or permanence it says in genesis 2 24 therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife and they shall become one flesh there's they are to become one flesh it's like a glue that binds a man and a woman together and we'll talk a little bit more about that later it is also for recreation for pleasure proverbs 5 18 let your fountain be blessed and rejoice in the wife of your youth now notice the the graphic terms that it uses unashamedly uh matter of factly plus a loving deer a graceful dog let her breast fill you at all times with delight be intoxicated always in her love so it speaks about the beauty of sex but always what the boundary be satisfied with your wife in the context of marriage so when you talk to your kids about sex always put it in the context the purpose for why god has given it always in the context of marriage let her love your wife satisfy you at all times then it's also an illustration in other words a picture of the intimacy that jesus has with the church the husbands love your wives as christ loved the church and gave himself up for her in revelations 19 7 let us rejoice and exalt and give him the glory for the marriage of the lamb has come and the bride has made herself ready so it's an illustration of the intimacy the love that jesus has for the church that's why isn't it any wonder that satan wants to encourage sex outside of marriage as much as he can and he wants to discourage sex inside of marriage as much as he can want to disrupt the man and woman relationship the husband and wife relationship why because it is an illustration of jesus love for the church and he doesn't want that he wants to destroy that picture now going back to the this whole idea of permanence one of the reasons he says no to sex outside of marriage is because it messes up his intended purpose to make it like a glue to make it like a bonding agent there's a chemical called oxytocin that's released in our brains when we have sex it is the same chemical that is released when a woman is breastfeeding her child it creates a bond it creates a warmth it enhances the relationship and women on average have about 10 times more oxytocin than men in their brains except except after sex and that's when the the oxytocin in the man's brain you know revs up that's why women are sometimes surprised when when they have casual sex with a guy and the guy says i think i love you why because it's the chemical talking but the fact that the fact that the women have it more i mean that's why women are different that's why you know women if they haven't seen each other for years they come together and within a few minutes within a minute they're connecting you see them they're crying already after three minutes and you're going wow they haven't seen each other for so long are you able to connect so fast guys on the other hand were so different we could play golf with each other for four hours and not talk about our feelings at all right yeah we just we're just wired differently but anyway it is this it is it is this chemical that's released that helps people bond together but i like what i like what uh gary thomas says the sacred search he's written a lot of great books one of the best books on marriage is by gary thomas the sacred marriage but in the sacred set uh search he says even apart from the moral aspect premarital sex is a foolish thing to do for this reason just when you need to be most alert to make the best choice you can possibly make sex creates a neurochemical fog that will confuse you you know why is it that even if the guy is a jerk you feel like staying in the relationship because of this neurochemical this release says you're going to feel like you want to stay with that person even if you mentally understand that it's not a particularly wise match you're literally launching a neurochemical war against your mental reasoning so just when when you need to be most alert just when you need to be most logical and think things through you're not able to if you're sleeping together because of this chemical that's releasing your mind so whenever god says no to a particular activity it's because he has a greater yes that he wants you to enjoy god when he says abstain from sexual immorality it's not just trying to keep you from having fun or having receiving pleasure it's because he knows it will mess up one of the purposes that he is intended for sex which is for permanence now let me illustrate this there are a lot of different types of glues out there you know you have elmer's glue and gorilla glue and crazy glue and you have epoxy but when you read the directions on any one of these glues they all say the same thing in order for this glue to work effectively the surface must be what must be clean and so when we engage in sex in a way that god does not intend for us to engage in it messes it up so when he says no it's because he has a greater yes god created sex for oneness in marriage but it is that oneness that gives meaning to sex there's the beauty of it but there's also the boundary that god places around it so that it accomplishes what it accomplishes the the purpose for which he gives it fourth or third we are to be content what else do we need to pack we need to pack contentment he says don't love money it says in verse 5 keep your life free from the love of money and be content with what you have for your said i will never leave you nor forsake you don't love money loving money will take you away from your commitment to god jesus says you cannot serve two masters and if you pursue money outside of your relationship with god it will ultimately be dissatisfying how do i know that because the richest man one of the richest man that ever lives says this ecclesiastes 5 10. solomon was perhaps one of the richest man that's ever lived he says he who loves money will not be satisfied with money nor he who loves wealth with his income this also is vanity this also is vanity when you make your life's pursuit to to make money it's never gonna satisfy you it's never to it's never going to be enough that's why it says be content in other words learn to be satisfied with what god has given you now i'm not saying though don't work to advance yourself don't have goals don't have ambitions but in the meantime while you're waiting for that promotion while you're waiting to buy that tesla while you're waiting to to move to a bigger house he says be content with what god has given you i love what john d rockefeller says how much money does it take to make a man happy his answer just one more dollar that was never enough never happy always wanting more spurgeon says it is not possible to satisfy the greedy if god gave them one whole world to themselves they would cry for another and if it were possible for them to possess heaven as they now are they would feel themselves in hell why is that because others were in heaven too for their greed is such that they must have everything or else they have nothing that's why you could be a billionaire and still have something missing as i said be content be content the way paul says is godliness plus contentment equals great gain godliness that that's the formula godliness plus contentment equals great gain some people because of their pursuit of money they never have time for god they never have time for church they never have time for bible study they never have time to pray and because they never get what they want when they want they're always frustrated with life bible says that's not the way to go godliness plus contentment equals what great game if you make your life's goal simply to make money and more of it and more of it you will have some gain but you will give up great gain godliness plus contentment equals great gain how could what what's the reason or what's how could we be content with this life with all the things that are going on with all the problems he says he brings it back because these are people with a lot of problems he says we could confidently say the lord is my helper i will not fear what can man do to me this is a special verse for me this is a verse that i that became almost like my life verse during this past couple of years and part of the reason is is not only because of what we were going through as a church but i think the majority is because of what my wife was going through at her work she was dealing with it with a very unreasonable boss but this is the verse that that i clung onto this we could confidently say the lord is my helper i will not fear what can man do to me i remember when my dad left for the united states in 1968 it was may 1968 in august that same year august 2 it was four in the morning we were waking up by this horrendous earthquake 7.6 i believe on the richter scale and it was just my mom my sister and me we were just little kids i was just eight years old and i'll never forget that was scarier than the loma prieta earthquake because we were sleeping on the on the floor you know we had a bed but it's so hot in the philippines you sleep on the mat you sleep on what's called the banig and we had the mosquito net over us but when the when the earthquake hit i felt like i was on a boat i mean the the house was rocking and you could hear the creaking of the of the frames of the wooden frames it was a it was making a horrendous noise i didn't know whether the house was going to collapse on us or not and as my mom was hugging me and my sister i remembered a verse that i had just learned from sunday school the sunday before and i recited that verse and this is the verse with time i am afraid i will trust in thee and it brought us comfort right when we that whole house was shaking you know this little eight-year-old with time i am afraid i will trust in thee i don't know what you're afraid of this morning but i want you to know that god is greater than any problems you might have god is greater than any boss or supervisor god is greater than the irs having tax problems god is greater than immigration god is greater than covet 19. you do not have to be afraid in fact god is greater than death because he's the source of life jesus says what i am the resurrection and the life he who believes in me with what will never die that even though he dies he will what he will live and so for christians the last thing is not the worst thing why because of the resurrection so we never have to be afraid he says i will never leave you nor forsake you and then it's it's interesting that in english you don't use a double negative because it cancels each other but in the greek language you could pile one negative after another to emphasize a point this verse i will never leave you know forsake you it has five negatives and in fact this is the way that you could read it okay if i could read it this way i will not not leave you i will never no never forsake you and so how how could we be confident knowing that god will never never never never never leave us that's the promise of this verse so whatever it is that you're going through understand you do not have to be afraid corey ten boone said this never be afraid to entrust an unknown future to a known god amen finally be compliant i'm not going to spend too much time on this because i'll talk more about it in the days to come but follow the word of the lord says remember your leaders those who spoke to you the word of god the worst time to for for a church to be divided or for a church to be rebelling against leadership is during times of crisis and so he says follow the word of god and then follow the godly examples of your leaders remember your leaders those who spoke to you the word of god consider the outcome of their way and what imitate their faith and then he says in 17 and the reason i won't spend so much time on this is because we'll talk about it in 17. let's read it together some of you it's been a long time so let's read it together here hear somebody else's voice besides mine let's read it together obey your leaders and submit to them for they are keeping watch over your souls as those who will have to give an account let them do this with joy and not with groaning for that would be of no advantage to you let's just follow their direction follow their counsel you go to a leader you ask for direction your counsel for advice and and they give it to you now follow it why because ultimately they're the ones who is responsible to god for how this church is run god not only gives us a responsibility and leadership of leadership but it also gives us the accountability of leadership to me that that is that is a scary thing that is a heavy burden that when i face god one of the things i will answer for is how i led this church and how you how i led you to to draw closer to the lord jesus christ and become more like christ but you will answer to how you follow the direction you will answer to your accountability as well did did i follow did i follow the leaders did i support them did i pray for them so be in prayer for leaders be in prayer for the pastors and the elders we have a heavy responsibility and we want to do it with joy so pray for us pray that we finish well pray that we lead wisely pray for god to protect our families because if he can't get to me he'll try to get to my wife or to my children and so be in prayer for us all the leaders all the elders because we are in the front line and satan knows that if he could pull down a leader he could discourage the church in fact sometimes he can destroy the church so be in prayer for your leaders so what do we need to pack for the journey what is it that we need so that we could endure well we need to be compassionate love your brothers love strangers love those in prison we need to be committed to marriage and to purity be content don't love money and then be compliant follow god's word godly example and leadership i will love others be committed to my marriage be content with what i have and follow my leaders let me end with a couple of verses or one verse as i said having having a billion dollars doesn't mean you'll be happy you could have a billion and still feel unsatisfied do you know the secret of contentment steph curry's favorite verse philippians 4 13 and the context is is contentment it is what i can do all things through him or christ who strengthens me without christ in your heart all the money in the world all the toys in this world is not going to fulfill your life even if you're a champion like steph curry if you don't have jesus it's it's empty and so if you don't have jesus i invite you to come to him if you are a christian and maybe some of the things that i've said have have spoken to you ask god for for his grace ask god for his forgiveness there's a quote in the book by joe dallas a strong delusion that i love it's one of my favorite quotes in in this book he says one of the most attractive features of the early church communities was their radical sexual ethic and their deep commitment to family values these things drew many people to them who were disillusioned by the promiscuous excesses of what proved to be a declining culture wouldn't it be wonderful for our church to find such counter cultural courage today so if you're here today and i talked about as i talked about all these topics uh maybe it's it's sexuality know that that god has a plan and purpose for sex and and if you if you've stepped outside of that boundary god also forgives there's no sin that god that jesus did not die for and that song that was sung i am simply a sinner saved by grace applies to all of us including me that whatever it is that we've done in the past that god is able to forgive because jesus paid for it all on the cross so today in whatever area that god has spoken to you about maybe it's in your priorities maybe money has become your priority and you've forgotten god i want to give you an opportunity to apply the message so with all heads bowed and all eyes closed if today you you've never asked jesus to be your lord and savior the secret of contentment is jesus he's the one that could not only cleanse you and forgive you of your sins he's the one that's able to to grant you meaning and purpose in life and so if it's if it's your desire to ask him to be your lord and savior would you just follow me in a simple prayer quietly where you're at just say dear lord jesus i need you i believe you died on the cross for my sins was buried and the third day rose again i hear and now open the door of my heart i receive you into my life as my lord and as my savior thank you for your gift of eternal life help me to live my life according to your word maybe you are a believer and maybe there are areas that that you need to ask forgiveness from i
