I seriously love Miyazaki. I don’t find the romantic themes overly saccharine or off-putting when they are there, and of course some of his movies have no romance at all. But even movies like Whisper of the Heart and The Wind Rises which have romances as a prominent part of the plot are more focused on self-actualization and supporting each other’s dreams. So there’s a lot to like about them even if you can’t relate to the romance.
