hey there fellow travelers mark here with walter's world today we're here in louisiana and today we have for you are 10 things that shock tourists when they come here to louisiana and the first thing that shocks people on their first trip to louisiana is the accent look you can get some pretty strong accents when you are down here in louisiana and sometimes it might be a little difficult to understand some of the people but guess what it might be hard for them to understand you as well but don't worry the people are super friendly and helpful so the accent might give you a little pause but you'll be okay and i know a lot of my international friends when they wanted to come to the us like oh let's go to louisiana i can use my french look you don't need to know the french when you're here i mean the the french you probably should know um would be blase le bon temp jules which means let the good times roll that's fine or if you want to know some other local sayings who dad always important no who dat okay when you're there and when you cheer you always want to say ghost saints but you just spelled a little bit different that's about the only french you're really going to need when you are here but do know that accent might get you a little bit when you are here now the second thing is going to shock you to come here is all the things that are such louisiana especially when it comes to the food yes you might see some louisiana specialties around the us from the hot sausage to the zaps chips to a bit of beer yes you have that but there's all kinds of incredible food when you're going to be here you're going to chat how much you want to eat eat and eat some more whether it is yes having a cat the going to cafe dumont in new orleans and have the beignets or maybe you want to have a muffaletta the sandwich there or maybe you want to have shrimp oh god crawfish at toufe uh yes please maybe you want to have some gumbo maybe you want some fried stuff as well i mean there's so much great food here that it's just shocking like oh my god we can eat eat eat and eat some more and they will because the locals will feed you and feed you and feed you more and for me my go-to is the oyster po boys or anything with oysters char grilled oysters that's my favorite thing but the po boys see the sandwiches like the sub sandwiches that's what you got to have when you're going around and the thing is is here you have a lot of influences yes there is the french influence of creole influence she had a lot of creole food the boudin the sausage and these things but there's a lot of fantastic food when you're here and you'll be shocked how much you do eat when you're here and you don't want to stop all right and the thing is i think one of the things that helps you not eat as much is that is the third thing that shocks people when they come here and that is how slow the service and the people can be now they're not trying to be rude but here in the in louisiana it's just more of a laid-back kind of place and so the service and getting things done and things happening just take a little bit longer so make sure you have your patience when you are here because i have seen a few tourists going come on guys let's go let's go let's go no no you can't make that amazing etouffee like that it takes time it takes love so have some patience when you are here because you'll be shocked how long sometimes it takes to get some things done but i will say there's one thing that's not slow when you are here and that's the mosquitoes so if you're out in season and the mosquitoes out and you've got short sleeve shirts and shorts on which you'll want in the summer because it's so hot don't be surprised those bugs are faster than you can imagine are ready to get you now the fourth thing that shocks people that come here to louisiana is the new orleans experience look new orleans is awesome it's one of my favorite cities in the u.s and we have tons of videos on the shocks new orleans and dots in new orleans and mardi gras and all this kind of stuff but honestly when you go to new orleans and then new orleans experience with all the tourists that go there and go crazy because it's like vegas like the it's not the locals that go crazy in new orleans you know on bourbon street and stuff it's the tourist and it really can be a crazy experience you'll be shocked the people trying to like hey i bet you 10 bucks i know where you got those shoes don't ever fall for that when you're there the bands that are playing when you're walking through the streets the amazing architecture that's there the cemeteries you can visit the voodoo stuff i mean new orleans itself is just a shocking amazing experience when you do come to the us so definitely visit it but for tourists when they come to louisiana it can really get you and they have so much to see when you're there it's not just the french quarter which is gorgeous you can go and see the homes you can go see the world war ii museum there's a lot of stuff around new orleans to check out and that kind of leads into the next shock i have for you and that is hey shockingly louisiana is not just new orleans i know for a lot of people that come here like 20 30 million tourists come to louisiana a year and they're going to mostly new orleans because it's awesome but the state i mean it's called a sportsman's paradise for a reason there's a lot of things you can do outdoors you want to do a swamp tour you can go see that you can go see the gators and things and you're going to go around and you can have all kinds of nature and you're here cities you can go see baton rouge is really cool to go to you have plantation alley to see the plantation homes you know you can see not away plantation as well i mean there's a lot of things around the state for you to enjoy i mean you go up to shreveport if you want you've got lafayette i mean there's a lot of towns to see but most of it's going out into nature and whether you want to drive down you know the great river road down the mississippi or other places you can really take it a lot when you're here that's not just new orleans which is shocking for a lot of people that there's more than new orleans here in louisiana now when you're driving around louisiana i think the next thing that might shock when you are here are the elevated highways and roadways and homes you're going to see around the state and the thing is is this is a very low line this is a delta the mississippi delta and it's relatively new land that's been you know silted and built up over the last you know few million years and the thing is is you have there's a lot of flooding there's a lot of things you have to worry about and so you will see elevated roads elevated all kinds of stuff and and one of the things if you're buying new orleans you know and you're going to be taking the other really really long elevated highway yeah don't forget to go pee and get gas before you get on those elevated highways because it could be a while before you can fill up again or d fill up again so do have a heads up for that and i will say it's amazing how i-12 can actually get really packed and really slow sometimes especially when you're like i'm getting low on gas and or i gotta pee can we get going people so have a heads up for that now the next thing is shocks people i'm going to stay with that elevated kind of thing is the elevated cemeteries the elevated graves you see all around louisiana and the thing is you might be in a in a local parish the parishes are the counties they don't call them counties they're parishes and you'll see it churches around there'll be churches and there's the elevated graves like whoa i'm not used to seeing that you do have that here of course because the high water table you can't put the graves in the ground because they come up so they have the above ground graves which sometimes you know surprises people to see those tombs and the thing is you can see them all over the state but if you're in new orleans going to the cemetery tours are really a cool thing to do so definitely check that out to see those beautiful cemeteries now the next thing is going to shock you to come to new orleans this is the thing johnson agrees with me on is the insane friendly people and the hospitality you get here in louisiana i mean you have southern matters in southern hospitality but louisiana like boom puts a little more kick into it like they do with their food with the hot sauce the spices they kind of did that with the hospitality i mean people from louisiana are some of the nicest people you're going to meet and they're going to help you they're going to tell you where to eat they're going to tell you where to go what to drink when to drink it what to watch out for when you should be going down to mardi gras what where to get the best spots when to get on shoulders when not to when not to block when to do this the people in louisiana are so friendly so if you're not sure what to do if you're not sure where to go just ask because they'll talk to you and they'll talk to you for a while so be prepared for a conversation that goes for a bit and with that accent sometimes you're like yeah i have no idea what you just said but yes and their enthusiasm for their towns for their parishes for their state is amazing and you'll see that and they do that whether you're cheering for lsu or they're cheering for the saints they love it here and so you really get that kind of like shocking like man you people are so nice and so proud of your state it's really really cool now my next shock for you is when you're driving on the road you might be shocked to see an alligator or a turtle just sunning themselves on the side of the road you're like wait was that an alligator yes yes it was you do need to be careful when you are here they are not tourist attractions they are wild animals so do be careful you can go on swamp tours and hold alligators and stuff like that but if you're out on your own and you're doing stuff you need to make sure you're paying attention especially you got little kids or you got dogs and stuff like that pets with you do have a heads up but you will see that and a bonus thing there is the pelicans the the state bird they're jerks okay so don't think pelicans are cool just let you know that they hear jerks when you are here all right and then i think the tenth kind of shock you might have when you come here to louisiana is a lot of people they come when they have vacation time when do we have vacation time july and august and the shock you will have when you get out of the airplane or you get out of your car when you get to louisiana in july and august with not just the heat but the humidity i mean you're like i can't breathe like the air is like thick it's like my goodness that i could have a muffler that's a sandwich or i could have an air sandwich because it's so muggy but it's swampland and stuff like this and all the water you're just like oh my god it is so like hot humidity i'm gonna oh you're just like you're just dripping when you are here in july and august so maybe stay out of those parts of the year because the thing that's cool is all throughout the year there's great festivals throughout the year all over the state so you can go enjoy stuff yes you got mardi gras in february usually right but there's other festivals throughout the year where you can go and enjoy and not like melt when you're here and oh my god i'll throw in a bonus like shock for you as the insane bugs when you are here if it's like bug season we were here in the winter so look i got no problems being here with my t-shirt on no big deal i know i talked about that before how fast the bugs get you but man you'll be shocked how many bugs will be out here and just like oh my gosh like i'm getting eaten alive so bring that spray you're gonna be coming during the season and don't be surprised if you see some bugs that like you think are bigger than your head i mean they don't have them that big maybe as big as your hand but not not that big but do have a heads up because you'll be shocked like what is that crawling up the wall what is that huge like ball sized bug flying through the air yeah just just have a heads up for that but honestly you'll be shocked how much you love coming to louisiana and honestly i mean new orleans is always great you have a great time in there but go explore more of the state i mean baton rouge like an hour and a half drive from new orleans if you're there rent the car go out to take that in plantation alley there's a lot of stuff to see when you're here uh so i hope you do have a good time if you want to learn more we have tons of videos on visiting new orleans shocks new orleans jones new orleans mardi gras all those things to help you out but i hope you have a great time here in louisiana and i won't be shocked if you meet some of the nicest people in the world here and eat some of the greatest food you've ever had here in louisiana so i wish y'all the best and i'll say bye from here in louisiana
