An amazing plane. I find it incredible that they leak fuel so quickly on the ground, but then it seals up nice and tight when running at speed.
A really excellent read about this plane from a pilot can be found here:

Excuse the Gizmodo link - this was before they went to shit. The story is really awesome and worth a read.
"Burnt-hotdog-oxide" is my new technical term for the day.
I wonder why a requirement to fly the plane is to be married... Perhaps to mitigate possible defectors?
Honestly my favorite plane of all time. Just a beautiful design all around. There's a really good book out there, Sled Driver I think, that's actually out of print right now. I've been trying to get my hands on a copy for a long time now.
So cool that the CIA used a front company to buy all the titanium from the Soviet Union. Suck it, Ruskies!
Why can't they just have some sort of temporary takeoff fuel tank, achieve liftoff, transfer fuel from the temporary tank to the in-flight tank, eject the temporary tank, and fly normally? Any ideas?
D.A.Y.R.L. didn't have such a ground crew. I finally see the flaw in that film. :p
That's a plane, not an office. Not sure how you could make that mistake.
My granddad worked on this baby back in the day. Unfortunately he had to have open heart surgery a week and a half ago, but he already gets up and putters around on some days. Thanks for posting this.
