you and be your spirit good evening good evening good evening father rao and the parishioners of santiago apostol parish of bethesda's pampanga we are blessed tonight because we begin a journey of the next 500 years and most of us were around in the last 50 60 70 80 some 90 years of the 500 years but now we look forward and tell ourselves how will the next 500 years be what challenges will await us in the next 500 years we don't have to look very far my dear friends the challenges are already upon us now the pandemic poverty ecological disasters bad governance and a decline in attendance in church services which is just a symptom of the decline in people's appreciation of the faith this is the time that we have to look for god more deeply and more seriously because god will be our light during this dark times we have planted trees in different parts of your beloved betis as part of the next 500 years with us for five young people your parishioners they are the first five of 500 young people that we will target to imprint power and to re-evangelize as youth in mission for the next 500 years and tonight we will mount and install and bless the first cross other crosses have been planted but this is the official launch the cross the pilgrim mission cross of this new pilgrimage this new mission for the next 500 years was crafted sculpted by your very own baby so his cross will be brought in procession during the offertory procession s because the filipinos have become the missionaries of the last century in the the filipinos who have brought the faith as domestic helpers caregivers factory workers and experts in various fields and professions working abroad my dear friends we all are missionaries so my dear friends thank you for allowing us to launch this meaningful rather difficult and challenging journey because it is not easy to go around pray for among rao and me because after mass after a little snack we will start the walk from here to malolos and from alolos to navotas so on and so forth until we reach visayas and mindanao and perhaps perhaps even beyond our beloved land magellan cross from spain looking for a path to the east now all those paths are known our only problem is how to travel because of the pandemic but god will provide we will be the new missionaries young and old of the next 500 years so let us prepare by calling to mind our sins and asking the lord to empower us to be beacons of light during these times of darkness and with jesus who is the light of the world bring the gospel of hope justice peace truth and love wherever we go i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have really the sins in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and what i have failed to do to my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i have blessed mary ever breathing all the angels and sins and you my brothers and sisters your prayers pray for me the lord our god almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] jesus [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] me [Music] [Music] r [Music] oh [Music] let us pray merciful father as we commemorate the quincentennial anniversary of christianity in the philippines we ask you to fill our hearts with gratitude for this precious gift of christian faith that we have received bless the filipino people that our hearts may burn with the desire of loving and following your son and become instruments of peace we ask this through christ your son who lives and reigns with you and the holy spirit god forever and ever amen [Music] a reading from the book of the prophet zechariah thus says the lord of hosts there shall yet come peoples the inhabitants of many cities and the inhabitants of one city shall approach those of another and say come let us go to implore the favor of the lord and i too will go to seek the lord many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the lord of hosts in jerusalem and to implore the favor of the lord thus says the lord of hosts in those days ten men of every nationality speaking different tongues shall take hold yes take hold of every jew by the edge of his garment and say let us go with you for we have heard that god is with you the word of the lord thanks be to god responsorial psalm let our response be god is with us god is with us his foundation upon the holy mountains the lord loves the gates of zion more than any dwelling of jacob glorious things are said of you o city of god response god is with us i tell of egypt and babylon among those that know the lord of philistia tyre ethiopia this mass was born there and of zion they shall say one of all were born in her and he who has established her is the most high lord responds god is with us they shall note when the peoples are enrolled this mass was born there and all shall sing in their festive dance my home is within you response god is with us [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] uh the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew jesus said to nicodemus no one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven the son of man and just as moises lifted up the serpent in the desert so must the son of man be lifted up so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life for god so loved the world that he gave his only son so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life for god did not send his son into the world to condemn the world but that the world might be saved through him my dear friends the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ 1982 six four years after me you can guess our ages if i am 66 how young is father rao okay he's 55 but i remember with with the gladness and gratitude our times in the seminary when we were young seminarians i was older and full of crazy ideas one of which was to use the bicycle going around and not too many would appreciate my antics but one seminarian thought that he wanted to learn how to bike and that was among raoul so among raoul asked me so i helped him assemble his first road bike and according to him he kept that road bike for many years and right now i heard that he's still riding a bike that was one of the small things that i passed on to a younger brother seminarian who later on became a priest the other day i was talking to a student of mine whose picture went viral on the internet and he was supposed to work in my parish but because of the negative impact of social media parochial and father ferdi was telling me and i forgot all about it that when he was a seminarian in san carlos and i was his professor one of the things that he noticed that when he had colloquium with me in my in my room was i had a personal gym i had free weights dumbbells and a barbell that weighed a hundred pounds and three weights that weighed each 20 or 30 pounds and at that time i had the muscular build of a bodybuilder and that stuck to him and we all i also required them to run around san carlos seminary and every wednesday i will run with them five times around the compound and anyone who could not run the five rounds around san carlos got a little lecture from me about fitness and discipline purdy told me [Laughter] and so further left for the states did two or two phds became director of a seminary in the united states and now he travels from time to time to connect with us because he used to be part of the diocese of cubao but one of the things that he told me father i have this twitter page and every sunday i have a twitter discussion with several young people who are curious about why i do bodybuilding and i have to engage them because i have to explain to them it's not about the body it's about the person the person is composed of body and soul the two are inseparable so that if you have a healthy body you should have a healthy soul if you have a healthy soul you should have a healthy body and some of those who follow him on twitter have concluded you are looking for sex and of course ferdi knows how to answer that i'm looking for god by taking care of my body i take care of the soul that houses that is housed by this body i am not looking for sex i am looking for god we are now at a critical juncture in our lives as a people and as a church and as humanity with a pandemic the world has to change people have to realize what they are really looking for what are we really looking for we have just planted trees around betis are we looking for a healthier environment cleaner more respected people who reverence nature and would not destroy tarnish pollute abuse but reverence nature are we looking for god in the natural world i don't know businessmen not all but many are looking for money and so they convert nature into money many would quarry transform mountains and rivers into gravel and sun mine the mountains in flat and this nothing will remain because the minerals would have been sold mostly to china people now look for money instead of god of course you know that as a young priest i was accused of being too political engaged in too many political battles i was here even here in pampanga too many times defending your beloved among ed each time the provincial council made life difficult for among ed i was there rallying all by myself before the provincial capital and telling the provincial capital the provincial council do your work not obey among ed but do your work do not seek your vested interests but seek the common good of pampanga now we have a different and a bigger challenge bigger than pampanga we have the forthcoming national elections will i be involved of course why because i'm a filipino a party i am first a filipino before i am a priest i will not i will never be less than what i am as a filipino as a filipino i want the best for my country as a filipino i will always speak out against what is wrong i will always speak out against a leader who abuses his power who is corrupt and plunders the government who is against human rights and kills left and right because i'm a filipino i will defend my country from foreign invaders china in particular as a filipino i will do all this but as a priest even do more make people realize that being a christian involves being a true son or daughter of the motherland to be a son of god is to be a faithful son or daughter of the motherland too when i was younger in 1977 in our struggle against marcos i organize an ngo that still survives up to now but there are fewer members most of them lay people the organization's name was gon borsa gomez burgos and samora our slogan then and are still our slogan now is christian i'm a christian therefore i love my country there are those who say the opposite i am a christian therefore i should not have anything to do with politics very good that's why quran politicians have overtaken our land most of them catholics anyway because we have separated faith from politics and politics from faith we have separated the body from the soul the soul from the body you might be thinking that i am veering away from what we are supposed to do we are preparing for the next 500 years and this is a difficult task because so much damage has been done to our institutions to our culture to our history to our economy to our environment and even to our faith so much damage and we need to repair what has been damaged i just want to quickly tell you what the basic things the basic orientation of the walk tonight in the dark this walk of the next 500 years will involve five hours first renew our faith second reaffirm human dignity and human rights third reconnect with nature fourth reconcile build peace and promote good governance fifth re-empower the youth formation these are not vague words they are very concrete we need catechists to renew our faith promote the catechists in this country in this parish today is the feast of a catechist san lorenzo ruiz we all have to be catechists teaching our faith to our children parents you are the first catechist so many parents do not know their faith reaffirm human dignity and human rights how many have been wasted in this useless and irrelevant and totally deranged war on drugs 30 000 the count made by human rights people human dignity has become cheap we must restore respect for every person even if he or she is an addict killing her is not the solution restoring her or him to his former dignity is our sublime duty to reconnect with the earth i had to touch and show the young people i had to touch the earth and show them hindi kadiri to death we have to launch more soil our hands touch earthworms collect you collect cow dung chicken dung mix it with soil and with leaves and create compost that will go back to the earth as fertilizer going back to the earth the earth sooner or later will conquer us and reduce us as well to compose reconcile there's so much unpeace in our country we must build peace and promote good governance we industry must not allow ourselves anymore to be deceived by trappos the tropos are running all over again i will not waste my time talking about who they are please do your research do not vote for the trappos re-empower the young i was glad to have met five of the young people commissioned by your parish to be the first of 500 the first five of five hundred to become the new youth in mission of your parish i look around what do i see tom sixty in above [Laughter] thank you and below please stand up don't be ashamed this is why i am here this is why even at my not so young age of 66 i will run and walk again across the land i'm sure this will be my last long run i might even die in the process but i don't mind at least i died doing something from god for god i brought with me two young people from my parish of our lady perpetual health where is ikoy and jr where are you ikoi and jr you are hiding ikoi and jr where are they there they are to my right palace as i go around the country i will bring this young people together we will bind ourselves through online fellowship online learning online discussions online planning and implementation of projects the young people we must empower to them belongs the future of this church to them belongs the future of our land my dear friends thank you for having us tonight very soon we will you will see five important symbols that will make up the walk of the next 500 years the first symbol is a long long walk from here to malolos and further on the second symbol is the pilgrim mission cross that will be planted in as many places in as many communities where young people with the elder older population will embrace the mission of the next 500 years philippine native trees we will plant bad histories not only in betis pampanga but in other places where we will introduce this is the batistry which is also a name in bethe name in spain but this bad history is not just a name it is not only a town it is a tree and it grows in pampanga and then the five young people chosen by the parishes and lastly the fifth symbol of candles lit in the dark i don't know whether i will have injuries or whether i will have difficulty completing the 45 kilometers from here to malolos when i was 41 years old 25 years ago i would run 40 to 50 kilometers a day run not even walk i survived it but i was only 41 but i will endure and commit myself to finish every long walk or run because like a candle we must have ourselves consumed slowly but surely not for nothing but for god for a higher purpose let us slowly burn let us slowly disappear from the earth not into oblivion but into a memory appreciated by all because as we lived we gave out a light that made people hope amidst the darkness i'd like to read what i wrote as we walk behind and alongside jesus drawing light and courage we gain so jesus and see the cross it is dark now but we light candles whose light gently brushes against our face we walk guided by the light many of us feeble in advance in age but many are young bodies aching for work and challenging tasks spirits soaring high with aspiration and hope the 39 and below we walk led by jesus we hardly notice that the candle has disappeared perhaps completely consumed by the flames but there is still light everywhere we see jesus a burning bright light light shines everywhere in and through everyone for with jesus we have become the candles of the new mission of the next 500 years amen the name of the father the son the holy spirit amen let us now stand for the prayers of the faithful god is patient and aware of our miseries especially this pandemic let us pray to him to help us on the way of conversion and renewal as we say to him lord hear our prayer all of us lord hear our prayer the christian faithful may heed the call to faith and repentance let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that god may give us the courage to commit or to commit ourselves to the liberation and price of all those imprisoned in their selfishness let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that those whose hearts are empty and cold may discover happiness in the love of god and neighbor let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that the second mind or body may have permanent healing let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for san lorenzo ruiz school of learning for all their formators their faculty and staff that the lord continue to bless and guide this school we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for our catechists working for the conversion of all our students that they may be zealous and industrious in their work and in their calling we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and we pray for the trees that father robert has planted in villa santiago in gawad kalinga in san miguel in the cemetery and in our parish that three these trees may symbolize our faith our renewal and our reconnection to mother earth we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for father robert and his staff we pray for his plans and his ideals we pray for his passion and his apostolate may we all share his enthusiasm and his love for our country we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer let us now in silence whisper our own intentions god of compassion and love he the christ of the world trapped in suffering and in pandemia through your son who makes all things good possible we ask you for the grace to follow him always in spite of all the difficulties these we ask through christ our lord amen [Music] [Music] foreign foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] me [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore this gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the jewfall that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and bring from it for this is a chalice of my blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat this bread and ring this cup we proclaim your death oh lord until you come again until you are born again we proclaim your death therefore we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you only we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit lord remember your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope florentino our
