[Music] hello and welcome to riverside park yankton on the banks of the missouri river for the 2021 hyundai world archery championships we're around about 600 miles due west of milwaukee for the 51st edition of these championships on recurve sunday it's just a few weeks since the delayed olympic games concluded and already it's time to crown two new world champions it's looking pretty calm out there the temperature is just under 20 degrees you expect that to climb but uh it has been windy here but it looks very still and calm today promising for some big scores here in south dakota we start this session with the recurve women's individual quarter finals and then we will see it all the way through the semis to the bronze silver and gold medals being awarded the last of the days here at the world archery championships at this fabulous archery center we're down to an elite eight here they fought their way through to the quarterfinals and here's how they line up and sand the triple olympic gold medalist from tokyo 2020 is here to see if she can secure a world title i'm karen bashir and joining me is former world number one nicki hunt and sam clearly is the standout candidate for the gold medal um but who else is in the field that we should be looking out for yeah she definitely is and we've got the youth of the 17 year old casey calfold the fire lisa barbillon [Applause] time now for the first of the quarterfinals and it is korea's new superstar the 20 year old and sam triple olympic gold in tokyo who's going up against turkey's 22 year old yes cutie on target number one three-time olympic gold medalist [Music] [Applause] [Music] shooting on target number two representing turkey the [Applause] three times champion individual team and mixed team and sand definitely be the favorite but you gotta say anago two-time olympian herself to rio and to tokyo there's a silver medalist at the 2018 hyundai archery world cup final in samson the 2018 european champion so you know she's used to the uh to the business end of the tournament nikki she absolutely is and you know hopefully this is going to be a fantastic match time for the first of the recurve women's individual quarterfinals and sound of korea to get us underway [Applause] set play in eureka three hours each and whoever's got the highest score at the end we'll get two set points [Applause] hey 9. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so the first two set points go to and they keep the koreans starting very well just did indeed um straight into the tent no issues of any sight mark or anything like that we've got really good conditions here very little wind some warmth some not in their eyes so it doesn't get much better than this confident start from yasmin as well from turkey 28 it's not bad not bad at all and you know most opponents uh [Applause] [Music] we look down the 70 meter range as the agents collect the targets the height of uh winning uh three olympic gold medals and be able to get herself from right back up there and sam uh is tremendous is there any question you know it might be difficult to raise a game again just a few weeks after doing that oh it hasn't been so far is it in qualification and mixed team team rounds just seems to be no stopping her well trailing and a gosh will shoot first in set number two and she's gonna get about climbing back on level terms with the korean the place in the semifinals up for grabs here [Music] you should see the korean shoot very good timing consistent between every shot [Applause] much better timing and sun a little bit unlucky with hers really the lovely group just low suggested a sight [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] into [Music] gotta be careful about the adjectives we use but i think we're gonna get this one out early doors here on recurve sunday it's looking unstoppable it's just the consistencies it's relentless consistency and you know that is what makes you the best anyone at this level can shoot 10 but you know how many can you put in the middle you know 10 after 10 after 10 and there's just no changes there no difference um and the girls we saw there too long at full draw sort of struggling to really execute the shot so your weekend is very dynamic there's always movement it should be maintaining your back attention keeping that arrow moving through the click all the time and she just seemed to sort of pause at full draw and you know whether she just couldn't commit to that shot but she needs to get back on it now she's got to get into this match well despite uh the frequency that these two have found themselves in elite competition on the podium range it's still fair to say it they will be nervous also from the turkish archer it will be anagog to shoot first here in set number three and she is fighting to stay in the competition now [Applause] [Applause] ah it's a time shot just came through the truck a little bit easier is a little bit movement but straighten the 10. well um sam has left the door open here but puts it into the eight for a 27 so a 10 from an to take this in nine arrows and move on to the semi-finals that's just what she delivered it was a 28 her lowest score in the match so far but and left the little gap for anagosh to sneak through but anagogos wasn't able to take advantage and sam does it in nine arrows look there's not much fuss about her drawing a process in her release very little fact about her making it through the semi-finals as well it's just business as usual isn't it just keep shooting good arrows good timing good form fantastic shooting from her unprecedented you know obviously tokyo the first year of the mixed team again with those three gold medals but to back it up straight afterwards with it with the world championships as well absolutely incredible well it goes without saying three olympic gold medals means that and sam is already a legend even in terms of korean archery and she's right at the beginning of her career and she's into the semi-finals here at these world championships there's a lot more to come from her that's for sure three more quarter-finals to come though as we take a look back at some of the arrows in that first one oh gosh started pretty well she did yeah with the 28 and then she just had two rogue arrows on those last two sets um you know such a shame in the third because you know all she needed to do really is get into the goal put a bit more pressure back on and she really had a chance to get involved in the scoreboard but just wasn't her day today and sam cementing her position as favorite for this world title is through to the semi-finals here in yankton yep ladies and gentlemen now let's hear from the athletes for our second rethird women's individual for her final match [Applause] it's called a final time on recurve sunday here in yankton riverside park the women's individual recurve tournament quarterfinal number two on target number two representing india [Applause] well two sides of the uh shooting line on the one side we've got the 17 year old yes 17 year old american olympian casey calfold she took bronze at the 2019 pan american games and really does look very good on the shooting line mature for a rage up against ankita back out of india 23 year old is the world number 32 got more medals as a team athlete rather than an individual but perhaps making a breakthrough here so home soil has casey californ to support here india in search of their very first world title really good confident start from here both left-handed arches a little bit more unusual [Applause] [Applause] with another 10 for a perfect start and that's just what she does the first two set points will go to the american and you can hear the volume of the crowd has gone up just a little bit of some of the nerves she must be experiencing last arrow wasn't what she would have wanted even though the set was gone she has to get herself ready for the comeback in the second set yeah i mean look at the group size it's not actually that bad or they're just a little bit high right so you need to make some adjustments get yourself into the 10 and get right back into this match [Music] try and forget this is a world championship final just shoot as though she does back in her home range it will be peter back out to shoot first time the set number two still hasn't settled into this match yet another high arrow casey as well but can't see any reason the venue for why that would be that doesn't seem any wind or any issues like that they're just not in the right place [Applause] well given the benefit of the down cooldown at 25 the seven will be enough to take the second set she's got a 10 and another 29 for her she goes 4 nil up um it's hard when you when you're looking at an athlete like this you she you can see that she's deep in thought there's a lot going on in that young mind isn't there yeah i mean she's just gonna snap out of it really this is a set system you know it's everything to play for you know you've got to treat this next set as no again and just go for it because she's got to get herself back into the game um the moment of body language of the indian is just you know negative really and closed so she's got to open herself up to being able to shoot the arrows she knows she can complete polar opposite over there with casey calfold who's looking relaxed calm talking away of the coach well we do know that the populist nation of india really do get behind their arches but that comes with a billion times of pressure it's that pressure that back out needs to battle here set number three can she find a way back from four nil down [Applause] [Applause] enrique if you'll have one point of contact any string you can see the back arts using a kisser between the lips and yellow thing on the string this casey's is on her nose so just another point of reference to help the archers [Applause] just what you needed there a perfect score curious three nines potentially uh one of those getting marked up to a 10 for cow fold so a swinging fortune there great stuff for bakat she she let go as you as you put it and fire them all into the 10 and a very good grouping as well uh but cow fold just having a little blip yeah i mean you know all credit to back up what a great set there from her three tens in a row is exactly what she needed she needs that confidence now to get back into this so she can pull another set and get that level even um casey i mean that wasn't a bad end really 20 27 28 is is not bad um but yeah the engine really gained a little bit of control again here control and determination for sure willing the arrows into the center of the target and a little bit of a ruse smile as well yes you can do it back in the game and key to back up she's closed the gap by two and she will shoot first in set number four [Applause] it's a little bit uncontrollable still into the 10. ah [Applause] [Applause] thing [Music] eight will do it for cow fold she's put it into the ten for her second perfect thirty of the match and casey kellfold goes on two semi-finals here on home soil cal fold winning six set points to two against back up of india [Applause] well a little blip from cal folding the third but um put to bed straight away with a perfect 30 to finish really impressive shooting to come out here on this stage we shoot perfect 30s at 70 meters under this kind of pressure as well is a magnificent reward under casey so keeping home interest very much alive [Music] [Applause] i certainly need to bring her consistency to the semi-finals coming up after the conclusion of the quarter-finals two more to go here in south dakota take a look back over that uh interesting match it was a good start from back up but she she started to crumble didn't you i don't know whether it was pressure or the weight of expectation of her home nation but she pulled it all together and showed that she can do it in the third she just needs to have a bit more consistency yeah i mean it wasn't a bad start they were just high and slightly right um for 27 which just wasn't enough whereas casey blasted down that 30 you know i think when your opponent does that as well it kind of makes it harder for you really because you know what form they're on but she certainly came back with that 30 of her own um but then just not enough in the fourth to get some more points which he really needed targets being replaced at two more quarter finals to come here in yankton south dakota [Music] is please let's hear it for korean [Applause] issues uh [Music] austria [Music] um and all of us for making this field [Applause] as well [Applause] [Music] [Applause] time now for the third quarter final in the women's recurve individual here [Music] [Applause] lisa [Applause] another korean in the lineup here in the quarterfinals to korea dan sand already through olympic games with a team gold medal [Music] she goes up against the reigning european champion from france lisa obama also on the podium in the team competition here she's burst onto the scene recently she's up against this lady here is [Applause] [Applause] beautiful timing quick shots trying to hold slightly higher [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] over the last couple of years with the hiatus we've had an international sport she she has a certain amount of joy in the way she shoots always smiling even though she's gone two set points down she goes back to the coach with a big smile on her face it's a big part of a game just 21 years old i absolutely love it i love watching her and she's really excited to watch and i feel like she's got this fire within her you know she's so so determined and she came to the european champs and not only should become a european champion but pretty much believe she got her olympic qualifying spot there as well and her eyes just burnt through the target and you know she's full of this energy which she's still got like you say she just lost the set but hey come back and be positive about it i think she sort of said to the coach yeah i know what happened there let's go look at bounced on the line yeah eager to get this one going just 21 years old but she's already the anchor of a very young french squad as they start their shortened quadrennial for her home olympic games in 2024 in paris can she fight back here two down to jang of korea barber land will shoot first at the start of the second [Applause] and she tends to be slightly longer at full draw but much better arrow from here [Applause] [Applause] set before consistency in that timing you know for non-arch you probably don't understand you know how difficult that is just to keep things ticking over and rhythmical and the koreans do that really well just on the line for a 28 can be matched by jane but she'll need to put it in the ten ring she's putting in the nine for a 27 so just like that barbara bounced back immediately two set points a piece here between jang and barbaland looks like the closest contest we've had so far she's bouncing on the line beforehand lisa barbala a smile still there perhaps more reason for it now though she's just loving it and you know when you're in that place where you just can't wait to get onto that shooting line like that that is when you shoot your best archery um just as i say she's great archer to watch full of energy she's got to maintain this all the way through now she can't drop it such a tough opponent in jam [Applause] having her chat with coach she's trying to reset herself [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] start of the third here jam will shoot first all tied up with farmer and now the door is open interesting to see lisa barbalan absolutely sprint to the line when the clock went off she wants to get there first yeah i mean she's at war literally at war with this target right here you know she was doing lots of self-talk positivity she's gonna go out there and attack it and you've got to do that this is a martial art and you have to commit you have to attack it [Applause] oh keeping this in her own hands she's in control of her destiny here whatever jane puts down at the range 26 gives fatherland breathing room here will be enough to take the lead turn it into the eight for another 26 her second of the match so they share the set points in the third opportunity wasted perhaps maybe but look at again the body language coming back high five the coach straight away other archers have come back despondent disappointed and then you go out there and you're not in the right place but her mentality is just exactly what you want this is brilliant [Applause] how much of that is is going to be having an effect on her opponent as well well yeah quite i mean you know we know that koreans culture can be a lot more quiet we've seen other koreans though um in the men's category with lots of fighting and you know shouting as well so but on the whole world so they're pretty quiet so it might be you know affecting the korean slightly the interesting dynamic here as well there's a left-hander facing the right-hander in korea we don't see left-handed archers so they very very rarely shoot face to face with someone else doesn't add a dynamic [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] three a piece here and this is to come [Applause] [Music] around them [Applause] that's just open the door over correction perhaps difficult to say i mean the groups to the left but for right-handed archer left hoes are perhaps a release arrow of some kind but i can't even see that flickering the tank looks so good [Music] so a little bit of breathing room here but a 10 would definitely put this one to bed for barbell she's popped it into the eight for a provisional 25 for that second arrow needs to be measured it's marked for a measure if you have a feeling for whether this is going to get marked up it'll look so close i mean i'm tempted to think it might be um certainly was close but we're gonna have to wait for the official confirmation with that [Music] reaction would suggest that the coaches had a quick look at it eight will remain an eight we need to see what the target judge is going to call here [Applause] so we're all square still for a piece now after four so we're going to the fifth and final regulation set to be separated or are we gonna get mickey hunt special shoot off [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] time for the crucial fifth set here nothing between jang and barbaland [Applause] another adjustment to the side the coach talking about execution movement [Applause] [Music] another adjustment to the side she's got to bring these in it's another opportunity for barbalan can she take it at the second time of asking me [Applause] well how important is this arrow for jang if she puts it in the 10. it's gonna be a huge amount of pressure on barbara it was a long hold wasn't it we could see a little bit of movement for the first time dropped it low now there's an opportunity for barbalant to see all this she needs a nine she's had two already oh she's putting into the eight as well she sees the funny side of it but both of them held on to their last arrows for just a little bit too long they finished the regulation five sets at five points a piece and actually now we're seeing on the korean side of the line a rueful smile perhaps picking off or feeding off barbaland's energy yeah i mean i think um i think jang thought she was out there and this is just another chance isn't it for her to come back in this one-hour shoot-off but again i just love boblin's kind of attitude to it all you know just come off the line and hey i did my best and you know we're still in this [Applause] yeah the humor that she's uh employs is great well battler of the stress i mean it was kind of like uh whatever the french word is for oops she that was the expression she gave when she turned around to her coach silly me oh well we'll get another go in the shootoff no pressure just another arrow to go but she's loving it she's enjoying it she's on the stage and she can't wait to shoot another arrow so why not look at her bounce it up and down i love it i love the energy yeah it's great to see really good to see barbara she's a breath of fresh air in the women's field and she's just 21 years old and she's a serious contender to these very strong koreans j though well perhaps not the model of consistency from her compatriot and but she's here as well she's in with a shout of making it two koreans into the semi-finals and because they're in the opposite half of the draw the two of them could actually meet in the final go all the way through to newton that's what the korean coaching fans will be looking for barbalan is looking to stop that from happening quarter final time here on recurve sunday the targets have been cleaned they've been replaced fresh target in case we go for a measure and it will be jang against barbalan with one arrow to decide who goes through to the semi-finals here at the world championships [Music] what timing she had there she just got on with that didn't she committed to the shot on the x-ring [Applause] great arrow from giant what can barbell do from her as well that is also very close but it looks like it might be just a fraction wider the smile on the face of zhang suggests that is the case and a pat on the back from the coach they're gonna wait for the official confirmation but the body language on the french side also suggests that this one has just skipped away a measure being done oh the tears are fingers crossed but i think she well i think it's maybe too close to call if she's crossing her fingers no there we go confirmation from the entire joke that jang has done this but i tell you what that would have been a very very critical measure it was so so close it really was fantastic shoot-off arrows from both archers jang i think really hit that x-ring so we could see it was just in but while babaline wasn't far off it was she just millimeters absolutely fantastic shooting well i caught a final that just kept on giving jan goes through 6'5 on a shoot off against barbalan an exceptionally close shoot-off it was as well but giant has made it through to the semi-finals here in yankton joining her compatriot anne in the top four [Music] please welcome the athletes [Applause] time for the quarterfinal here in the recurve women's individual now between svetlana conveyor of the russian archery federation and alejandra valencia from mexico [Applause] shooting number two [Applause] well two highly ranked athletes here combo over the 23 year old is the world number 13. she's won two stages on the hyundai archery world cup sorry she won stage two of the honda archery world cup in lausanne in may of this year um all of those athletes that has tripped up more team medals uh including a silver at the tokyo elementary games and she has individuals but she's here to make a change to that at these individual world championships alejandra valencia from mexico is 26 years old the world number nine she's been to three olympic games picked up the mixed team bronze most recently in tokyo claimed a silver medal here in yankton in the team event place in the women's recurve semi-final up for grabs gone behavior to shoot first yes struggling to find the center interesting the russians going high and the mexicans going low but it doesn't seem to be the wind it seems lovely conditions out there so far opportunity for a good start for valencia which as she claims mark provisionally as a 26 could get marked up to a 27 it matters not though 2 nil to the mexican after the first set intriguing you're right that uh one set of arrows high one set of arrows low anything to do with the light that's coming in across the range at the moment i wouldn't have thought so at this stage you know the sun i don't think is really an issue um you know they've come off a practice field onto this venue so you know they both have similar conditions there and often we see this archers doing the same thing then it might be generally we've seen high left as is the uh the normal place the arrows are going in the first end particularly but sometimes it's just a difference in the pressure the balance of the shot and they can make it go high or low if you what we call heal it through the front hand a little bit so through your thumb a little bit lower perhaps than normal they can just go a little bit higher so yeah under pressure things change just keep their shots the same as possible bit of a relief on the look of valencia actually two set points up at the start of this quarter final against gombaeva okay close up of the bespoke quivering belt that combination is using she's found the middle of the timing [Applause] [Music] [Applause] i think you're looking at the like finger sling so most archers will have a finger sling sometimes it's a little bit of paracord you can't see so well some people use um shoelaces like a flat shoelace that you can see quite a long one it's a wind tied into a lovely braid and what's it for so when he leaves the bow the bow goes forward and that should catch the bow we can see valencia's got one there it's just a lot smaller [Applause] well two apiece 29 there for gone by eva 28 for valencia nice and consistent but all square and look you sort of explain the mechanics of what the sling is for but is that the reason to have that is what to keep the bow hand nice and relaxed you're not gripping the bow too too strongly yeah so you can see that long long rod that comes out the front of the bow got some weight on there so that helps the bow kind of roll forward and so we're ensuring that that arrow is leaving the bow cleanly so as it rolls forward look that bow's pushing out of your hand so it'll kind of jump forward about an inch and it should hit then your bow sling the finger sling and so that your hand yeah stays relaxed it doesn't make any um kind of movement which then could alter where the bow is aiming and ultimately whether i was going to go really important to use those early on in your career even just a beginner use your fingers thing because the habit you can build up from gripping the bow on release is hard to break lots of equipment very simple sound very complicated in a sport it may seem very simple to the outsider two a piece here in this quarter-final conway over to shoot first in the third [Applause] okay nice quick shots this shot's always moving yeah i think so there's a lot at stake here square again three a piece after three and there's nothing between this pairing if anything nikki would you say that is the one that's just shooting just a little bit more consistently yeah i talk a lot about timing so that's the about time that archer spends from when they get to their full four position um to then releasing the arrow so enrique it's pretty dynamic they're always moving and that's quite quick in that time and she keeps that shot moving and you know that consistency can really help whereas valencia tends to spend a little bit more time at full draw and sometimes she's spending too long there just leaves time for like say those nerves that we saw a little bit just creeping in [Music] [Applause] [Applause] well you can see the humor with which that opportunity was taken all square after three gone by over versus valencia russia we'll shoot first again in set number four left isn't she high left possible release error maybe but she's looking good valencia also going left slightly confused i can't see your wind in the venue what difference that makes [Applause] another opportunity for the mexican and this time she takes it it's just a third ten of the match but it does mean that she takes a 5-3 lead after four sets here and he's in a strong position she'll shoot second and all she has to do to make it through to the semi-finals now against the russian is match what gombava puts down the range a critical moment to shoot nikki we talk about uh the the scoring system which is fairly simple to understand he has three arrows high score gets two set points but we've also mentioned before that it's not always just about the highest score it's about when you shoot that that good arrow and that 10 is so important yeah i mean psychologically finishing that set there for valencia um with the 10 and then being able to take the set i mean that's psychologically a great place to be come off the line full of confidence and that's what she needs right now but lana's got to win this set she's got to win it to make it five all to push for the shoot off very little between combat over and valencia in this quarter-final match here at the world championships valencia's just edged ahead as we go into the fifth and final set gone by over has to chase her down starts beautifully with a 10. oh that error again high left there's something obvious in a technique which is just breaking down a little bit to make it through to the semi-finals for the mexican oh she gets a nine it's exceptionally close to the eighth but it's enough for alejandra valencia to take this quarter final seven points to three and boy you only have to lead at the end and that's exactly what valencia did [Music] [Applause] not she did enough to make it through valencia it wasn't plain sailing she's into the recurve women's individual semi-finals here in yankton um keep dancing pattern here ladies 2019 yes [Music] [Applause] congratulations [Applause] [Music] of the year [Applause] [Music] [Applause] okay right now [Applause] [Applause] and now the athletes for the first recurrent women's individuals [Applause] [Music] time now for the recurve women's individual semi-final and the usa will be right behind this one let's go down to the range for the athlete introductions [Music] [Applause] representing the united states of america [Music] [Applause] so and sam of korea three times but up against a 17 year old american who has nothing to lose on home soil and looks very determined indeed cow fold from the usa versus ann san from korea [Music] to get this semi-final underway [Applause] to the right if it went to the right [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] door's open here the and the american teenager has gone two set points to love up here in this semi-final against the red hot favorite from korea [Applause] first signs [Applause] absolutely incredible start from here i mean and ansen's come through here she's qualified first with a 6 46 in pretty terrible conditions earlier in the week she was preceded then through the first two rounds but she did lose two points um to koscan of turkey so she has lost points before let's see how she coped with this time [Music] [Applause] [Music] needs to keep her nerve sad of consistency [Applause] [Applause] put the line [Applause] [Applause] another opportunity another opportunity taken this is not what the doctor ordered for korean side but certainly keeping the home crowd very happy here 2 28 from ann not bad at all but casey calfold the 17s capitalized with 229 and the american leads four set points to nil against a triple olympic champion looking pretty relaxed you look over the other side there seems to be some fairly strong words coming from the coach towards her athlete she's just going to refocus herself back into this though hasn't she not become too relaxed four-nil up is an interesting place and we see quite a lot of archers then concede some points after that when the britain perhaps switches to you know can i win this um so she's got to stay with the process keep doing what she's doing not allow any future thinking [Music] happy with the fact now that she's on the set but she's actually taking it with tens showing that she can do it under pressure sand has to now replicate that training by four set points to nil there's a nine down at the start of the third and just throwing an arrow out of a bow there obviously um looked at the knot perhaps it's probably broken threw it back and took another arrow [Applause] now the opportunity is with an a10 puts this out of reach [Applause] [Applause] [Music] a little bit shaking the written nerves can we she's just 17 but uh she's afforded and sound an opportunity to get back in the match here and she's in such a commanding position she'll let those thoughts creep in that she should have taken advantage but she really needs to just knuckle down she's still leading by two and can still do this in the next three arrows [Applause] cowboy boots [Applause] shoulder strap does she not know she's in rodeo land [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] time for set number four here the first semi-final in the recurve women's individual and career training 4-2 to cal fold of the united states and she's thrown down a seven here all of a sudden the sun shines more brightly for the 17 year old [Applause] what on earth has happened here both of them going low in the target i'm sorry both at the first two hours low on the target and then she's back in the middle and this one wow it's been a nightmare for the korean manages to get it up into the line for a 24 but that is not the score we expect opportunity and it's in the ten and casey calfold has done the unthinkable here and knocked out the triple olympic champion and sad of korea and look how happy the crowd are with that performance half holds mum in the crowd happy with that result and it just goes to show if you can keep your confidence in your nerve you can beat anyone what a performance casey carlfold is in to the gold medal match here in the united states of america at these world championships i think he came into the match knowing that cowpod really had nothing to lose she's a teenager she could just go for it but she's show such maturity for such a young age yes she really does and the positivity and energy she shows in the line as well even when things weren't going well for her you know she came back with a smile so wow i think that's probably the biggest upset of the entire tournament for ansan to be knocked out in that semi-final now i'm going to contest the bronze medal well they clean off the targets for the next 75 to see who careful will face in that gold medal match here on home title this will return [Music] now for women's semi-final matchup before the introductions [Applause] representing mexico [Applause] [Music] so here we go semi-final time here mexico's alejandra valencia world number nine medal [Music] just a few weeks ago up against [Music] world championship [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yes hey [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] nothing between them through the first set here so they'll share the set points high quality we as we expect any indications of uh who's shooting better early to say isn't i think you know when you come off the line having a shot at ten uh you feel pretty good about your 29 then your opponent also shoots a 10 and you've got to share the points with them i think the um swing and the balance that maybe is probably with alejandra we always saw that challenging her quarterfinal knows how to grit it out okay don't really give anything away at all one a piece after one set we're going to the second and it will be jammed [Applause] [Music] sometimes from just gotta get them into the turn much longer hold on [Applause] square [Applause] [Music] she needs that marked up to stay level otherwise the provisional score of 31 as we see on the [Music] advantage yep she's called a 10 there so valencia has been marked up and it will be two a piece between her and jang as we go into the third set oh so an important measure at the end of the second set sees jang and valencia tied up and two apiece as we go into the third [Music] looks like she's going to need more of the same here she'll shoot first [Applause] yes [Applause] [Applause] definitely back in the groove [Applause] [Music] [Applause] i think so from you know the angles that we've had here it looks like it is so it looks to be another tight set but we will wait for official confirmation [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] doesn't it well certainly your preparation your mindset yeah definitely i mean you get 20 seconds to shoot your arrow so the last thing you want is to pick out an arrow from trigger which is broken like say it's not only the time but it's uh kind of breaks your normal routine and pattern of what you're doing so i'm gonna start just checking those out [Applause] [Music] and valencia [Applause] putting it into the 10. [Applause] [Applause] valencia just missing a 10 and a smile back to the coach [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh now she pulled the face suggesting that was going to go horribly wrong it was exceptionally close to the line that one really was i mean we've just about to see that it's going to be a nine but wow pretty close wasn't it well the smile on the face of junk there she has finally broken three leads by five set points to three over this mexican archer against the olympic games three times certainly it's the korean in the driving seat in this semi-final loser will have to pick themselves up and have a chance to shoot for the bronze medal the winner goes on [Applause] to fight for gold here and the world title great shooting but look how close valencia is two arrows just out the turn and these the tiny tiny margins that make the difference between winning or losing a set [Music] [Applause] [Applause] closest to the middle determination there she's got to win this set force the shootoff gonna be measured foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it says we need a nine for the win actually and eight could do it because oh now it is an eight so this is important i think an eight could do this because i think that nine that's going for a measure he's actually going to get marked up to a 10. that would mean that jan goes on to 28 points and they share the set points and how much do you need to win yeah six six sets points will be enough and the coach looked pretty convinced didn't she had a quick look when the third arrow went into the target for jang measured nine looks like it was cutting the line to me and there you go it has been marked up to a 10 and that eight panned out to be enough to share the set points and take this semi-final six set points to four jang goes on to in the gold medal match valencia will be pretty much straight back out here to compete for the bronze medal what a match up that was and in the end it went down to a measure but it's jack from korea through to the gold medal match here at the world championships [Applause] [Music] [Applause] after a short break so thank you [Music] we have three countries [Music] [Applause] let's make some noise time now for the women's medal matches we are starting with the bronze of course the losing semi-finalists will it's and sound of korea lost out to casey cowfold [Music] valencia for bronze followed by cow fold versus jang for the world title here in yankton south dakota bronze medal match athletes are not laying in weight here [Applause] [Music] women's individual bronze medal match valencia [Music] and of korea was the favorite coming into this became undone in the semi-finals [Music] [Applause] representing mexico tokyo olympic games [Music] [Applause] well they've both just come back from the tokyo olympic games it's been an interesting season for the koreans in particular electing not to compete on the world circuit this year because of the restrictions they would have faced on their return home from foreign events so they built a replica of the range in tokyo and they've just been practicing unlike anybody for the games themselves they've come back home and they've come back out now for the world championships and sam picking up three gold medals in tokyo it was a bronze for valencia sam was favorite for the title here but as lost in the semi-finals can she pick herself up to take the bronze here in yankton she'll get the semi-final underway i'm actually setting such high standards had a different form in the semifinals and started with an eight here yeah very similar to how she ended that semi-final wasn't i'm sure they were going low um in the red just needs to keep making the right adjustments [Applause] [Applause] right okay great shooting from valencia let's just put i think she's shooting really well she's taking advantage of an under par and sat yeah not sure what what has quite happened here you know obviously everything's gone right for her isn't it this year and olympic titles galore qualifying first here coming through the rounds really he dropped me two points to get into this final day and it's the first glimmer we've seen where she's just started to come off bar yeah and was starting to look like uh making a nonsense of nonsense of the phrase you can't win everything every time she stepped onto the shooting line she was going to win so it is it is an unusual sight to see her performing she's about to say so badly she's just around 26. i don't think i could get that with niners [Applause] [Music] training by two in the bronze medal play-off at the world championships of 2021 and sam of korea will shoot first [Applause] up a little confused she was going left in the semi-final right now yes [Applause] 10 required from valencia to share the points [Applause] 29 is a good score but actually looked at that one from valencia at this time and uh there's a little bit of a wobble in the middle wasn't there 29's a great score um yeah she looked a little bit shaky didn't she in the middle well you know there's a kind of a world medal up mistake here whether you get your feet on that podium or not so i mean they're so good we see so little movement from them that you you know kind of forget it don't you but just a tiny little bit moving then you're not even unsung at all we're getting confirmation on the iranian the target judge there we picked up on one of our atmospheric minds i think very helpful for us has to be said well she's on the scoreboard and sam of korea but she still trails by two so she will start things off in set number three with all that support behind her here in south dakota [Applause] great timing strong shot back in the middle where she's used to it [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] great perfect score of 30. put some pressure on valencia here as low as an eight it doesn't really matter if it's marked up to a nine it's not going to be enough and sand has drawn level at three set points apiece after three pressure pressure pressure that's all that was right absolutely matching arrow for arrow all the pressure on valencia then just to finish up the set and just couldn't quite do it i think that all hit the nine just but interesting you know the reactions between the pair of them through the set alejandra you know a smile to the coach with a good ten and nothing from ansen just pure concentration no emotion in it at all [Music] [Applause] [Music] yeah maybe less hitting the arrow before we heard it flash that's why they need to check their knocks when those arrows are returned back to them so three apiece here in this bronze medal championship play-off between valencia and and mexico versus korea it's all square and sam has fought her way back into this she'll get set number four underway now this is what happened before there wasn't it would go low maybe just losing a bit of pressure perhaps in the front arm great reply from alejandra and a smile talk about losing pressure in the front arms explain that a little bit more in layman's terms so at least i can understand so we're looking for this balance front and back um of the bow and you know if you're just losing a little bit of that pressure through the front arm towards the target then they tend to drop low you kind of think of the the leave elbow on a seesaw maybe and if the front elbow drops down then the arrow's going down slightly means it's all square again in set number four 228 after 230s there was an opportunity there for valencia again but four apiece after four sets and we're gonna go into the fifth i know you don't like them but uh it's got the markings of a shoot-off in it absolutely love a shoot-off i don't know you know it's so close to cool isn't it he's kind of matching each other really closely but just one curious arrow a [Applause] can make such a massive difference and both ways you know if you get the 10 [Music] full concentration required at all times process must maintain complete consistency set number five of the bronze medal play-off at the world championships and sound of korea will shoot first hey [Applause] yes [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] shot oh brilliant finish her second perfect in the match and that will be the bronze medal for ansan recovering having lost in the semi-finals disappointment from valencia well she manages to put it to one side to finish with a 10 herself and the 29 but she'll rule that nine in the middle but it will be careers and sound on the podium not perhaps where everyone expected it to be but she's fought back and recovered from losing the semi-finals to take the bronze medal here in yankton south dakota beating alejandra valencia six points to four [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] there's confirmation from the retirement judge and sam has made it to the podium and she waves her bow to her fans in the crowd not just uh teammates but some locals here [Applause] in the vicinity of this fantastic archery venue on the banks of the missouri river [Applause] and we'll be collecting the bronze medal coming up very shortly the gold medal play off as we take a look back on some of the shots and it was another curious one for sam she [Applause] yeah some you know arrows that we definitely didn't expect to see from anson but you know matched really well by valencia as well some great shooting throughout the match by both competitors and took it all the way to that fifth and final set what a match [Applause] time now to go for gold here and the acton south dakota that means world championships it's recurve sunday women's individual one finals the united states [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] representing korea [Music] [Applause] well what a match-up we've got for this world title match between casey californ the 17 year old from the united states of america up against jiang min he of [Music] 17 years old she is full of incredible maturity but you could go down to the korean 251st ranked archer and put then onto a finals field and they would still probably be the favorite uh and ranked down at what uh 100 plus in the world jang that really means nothing she's arguably gonna be the favorite for this gold medal match and the world title gold medal match underway shooting a nine lefty against righty back to back they won't be facing each other and what a start from casey i just can't believe how relaxed she is you know came out there smiling and waving to the crowd even after the introductions and she's composed [Applause] now already an important arrow here set number one put some pressure [Applause] does just the trick at 29 marks the quality of this match [Applause] [Music] it's not going to be enough and generally he has two set points now we're going to test the method of this 17 year old american nikki she certainly got bags of confidence that that maturity was really important yeah really is you know she knows how to handle herself she knows what to do in these situations she's been there so many times before very successful youth archer as well so she's got to put all those experiences into this moment right now i mean she's the underdog really isn't she no one's expecting a 17 year old to come out here and win this title so sometimes that's the best place to be mum amongst the supporters in the crowd [Applause] time for set number two here in south dakota and it's the usa's casey calfold who will get us underway training two set points to nil [Applause] [Applause] that sun now in the eyes are casey i wonder if that's playing a factor [Applause] [Applause] another important arrow here for cow fold just got to put it in the tent here's some pressure [Applause] another 27 [Music] opportunity here and nine will be enough to go four nil up for joe [Music] [Applause] just two points away from claiming the world title here [Music] [Applause] [Music] that went astray a good point you make about the sun because she's facing it against writing it's a massive advantage to the career just fortune really [Music] four nil down at the start of the third 17 year old american casey calfold is shooting to stay in with a shot of a world title on home soil [Applause] [Music] great shot has an opportunity here to put some pressure on nonchalance he takes it into the nine as well another opportunity to join this time she takes it so her fate is now in her own hands and that eight and there's a massive opportunity here for a nine-arrow win just an eight for the world title and she puts it into the x-ring at 29 to finish things off and zhang minhee of korea has just become the new world champion [Applause] [Music] has the experience of a world final under her belt at just 17 years old but she was picked at the post couldn't quite keep up the level of consistency that got her to this medal but wow what a performance from jang min he the 20 21 women individual world champion here in yankton south dakota well it was a terrific performance in the end of the uh casey carl folder that didn't shoot too badly but just one or two arrows going astray and a professional performance yeah really incredible shooting from zhang you know 29 28 29 just didn't let casey even get involved in the match six nil great shooting [Applause] that's the archery done for this session despite the lack of appearance on the world stage through the season internationals we take a look back on the final 17 year old cow fold getting the match underway fantastically a couple of tens at the start but in the end there's just too much from jang the korean curious look from the 17 year old where has my form gone from earlier on today on the korean target just much tighter inside the gold ring lines and tens took jang min hee to the world title let's see what she has to say about becoming the champion congratulations world champion how are you feeling right now um [Music] at the first time i was really nervous but i tried to focus on the way i going through so finally the quarterback that i get one i'm really so happy for now right now first world championships first world final does it get any better than this for you you want [Music] this is my first world championship also last last event for as this korean nationality member for this season so for the last game i was one i'm really happy and i really enjoyed it and the last question for you is how meaningful is this gold medal match and world title for you uh [Music] [Music] it makes me like some great strong confidence for right now because i'm going through the hard time hardest time ever so 3d all the pop-up months for now so it is really helpful for my next carriers for that minh congratulations and now time for you to enjoy it thank you thank you struggling through the the lockdowns we've had over the last couple of years there and uh saying it's really important to win a world title i think at any point it's important to win a world title but it has been very restrictive for the korean nation the arch is not competing on the international circuits throughout the qualification period having already qualified for the tokyo olympic games they decided to stay at home just about getting back out into the world now having competed in tokyo winning the team at gold medal gentlemen who now is the individual world champion let's travel just a little bit further to come and win that couple hundred miles away from mount rushmore replica of that above the targets here the president's overseeing things here in yankton park that's uh the action on the range complete for session number one still one more session to go we're focused on the women's individual recurve in this session a little bit later on today we will move over to the men's quarterfinals and bring you all of the action from the elite eight who will be competing for the world title the last one here in yankton for these hyundai world archery championships little ceremonies yet to come so whilst we wait nikki any highlights from the women's competition i mean a big upset for colorful to knock out and but anything else stand out for you i think just seeing cafe go through that semi-final the determination she did was uh fantastic [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] world [Applause] [Music] so on well again medals being presented by a combination of uh exec committee lord archerman is the vice president in this case and the local organizing committee representative he means individual recurve bronze medalist is and san of korea she took three golds in tokyo just a few weeks ago at the delayed olympic games and she's come to the world championships and go on the podium again this time it's bronze but what a season it's been [Applause] a 20 year old korean [Applause] it's been a long time since the usa have taken the individual women's recurve title i'll have to wait just a little bit longer there's luanne ryan who took it in 1977 in canberra but a silver medal here for a 17 year old american bodes well for the casey future fault will break that hoodoo [Applause] but again it's a korean who stands on top of the pile in a recurve competition been a tough couple of years for zhang mean he but she's capped it off having taken the team olympic gold medal in tokyo with the individual world crown it's off to you [Music] [Applause] champion [Applause] [Applause] national anthem [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] well there we have it the moment for the athletes to have their photos taken for the morning papers the new world champion the 17 year old american in silver medal position and and sam the favorite managed to recover from losing in the semi-finals to cow fold to pick up the bronze medal here in yankton time for a well-earned rest in these individual athletes here is the lineup of the top 12 valencia the losing bronze middle playoff athlete from mexico but there's some superstars still in the lineup there's plenty more to come from some of these lisa barbillon another standout performance from the french european champion finishing in fifth and that's it from the session for the women's individual recurve here in yankton we'll take a look back at some of the action from the elite eight it's uh about rushmore live the stage show has its debut here the banks of the missouri river he hasn't been anagosh put in a strong performance and sam looks so solid didn't she yeah she really started off well didn't she in that quarter-final but just lost her way a little bit into the semi calfold had a great performance in her quarterfinals making it through and lisa barbara there showing loads of fire loads of passion loads of hunger and a fantastic smile it was up and down for alejandra valencia of mexico didn't quite have the consistency to get a medal here but wasn't too far off so he was the star of the show she battled her way through and then having seen and go out in the semi-finals sam managed to pull it back together to get the bronze medal against valencia then came in to a final against the athlete with the strongest support here in yankton casey carlfold the teenager from the usa but zhang min he did enough to take the world title here in south dakota coming up a little bit later on we'll turn our attention to the men's recurve individual but thanks very much for joining us for now you
