my friends here it is the Saturday morning live stream not at the Garden like of Viking headquarters here at the Tennessee plot so guys let me know um what I said okay I got to do the sound check Chattanooga okay what did I say all right uh hope that this mic is working you know we're out away from the studio today okay thank you very much fire lemons Chattanooga that's what I said which is hard to understand anyways uh so we are just making it happen all right so guys let me know uh signal lost yes I am in Chattanooga Tennessee right now and we are uh converting one of the garden plots it's going to be really nice so if you guys have watched uh the green manure video that I made last year I showed you how we utilize green manures at this crop and we've done it for several years and that is so that we can uh make the soil fertile and air rate it and mix in the organic matter uh for several years but now this is the last year or last year well this is the last year for that for um make a green manure crop so now we are making permanent raised beds with 2x10 which we're just using the Earth and consolidating it and making the permanent uh 2x10 raised beds with the conveyor belt if you watch the video you know know what I'm talking about conveyor belt walkways so um yes okay thank you Jay Dixon I will move it closer to my mouth how is this does it sound good so let's see uh okay guys VA green says good morning Nate can't watch but we'll listen on the way to Chattanooga all right yeah guys if anybody is in the area I will be doing uh a talk at the crab tree farms tonight about uh some jayd and it'll be Q&A and uh well I don't really know exactly what we're going to talk about so we're going to see what the feel of everybody is and uh we'll go from there so we will uh see you guys there I'll be there at 4:30 to 6:30 yes um oh my goodness Jay don't even yeah uh talking about underculture okay so the man you guys don't even start seriously this has to be Ser they're not we can't talk about underculture today hello Pam says hello from the gardening friends from all over the world much love and blessings from South Africa yes it is going into your fall time there so um yes all right guys let me know what you guys have started so in Indiana right now uh I just planted the peppers or the uh not the peppers but the uh tomato onions just the other day so on 420 pretty much is when I like to plant the onions we could have done it a little bit earlier this year but uh I didn't get to it so everything is done in Divine timing in the garden and so we will um see how that goes uh but I know that I'm looking at the weather forecast and it's raining there right now and in the 60s and 70s so that's pretty much perfect transplanting weather so I don't plant by like the calendar or the moon or anything like that I plant by the weather and so I pretty much just look and see okay when is it going to be sort of overcast and rainy if possible for several days and so that's when I plant at the beginning of all of that because uh the last thing that plants like is to go right the shock of transplanting and then to be right in the blazing sun where they just H they get all dried out and that's not good yeah so um that's what we're doing Brian Ary says Nate are you going to post the video of your talk you know I'm not sure I didn't really didn't really think about it just because you know the whole thing is uh yeah sorry it's washing out the image a little bit we're making do with what we got let's see here I don't know if that helps uh like that huh yeah it's t it's tough because there's a lot of good light in here so it is what it is uh but yeah I didn't really think about uh how to record it I'll record parts of it but yeah this is one of the first uh of these kind of things that I'll be doing so we'll see um yes okay thank you guys uh DL DLR says I've planted some onions peas lettuce kale and Dill more of all to come yes definitely all those things would be great to plant no problem if you guys have not got on the P train you still can do it you just so them overnight well about 6 hours is all the longer that you want to soak peas cuz I've soaked them uh you know way overnight like 12 hours or or like 16 hours and it kills them so um The Sweet Spot for soak and peas I found is like four to 6 hours yeah so uh free bird says it's beautiful in Central Indiana rain is over going out to the Garden after the live okay nice yes and here it's just getting a little bit hot uh for me which is like 80° and full sun and humid yes uh so B Hendrick has a question says uh how do I chit 100 pounds of potatoes seems like I should just plant some without it yes and that's the thing guys you actually don't have to chit so remember that uh now a lot of people think that um hang on one second a lot of people think that you have to chit uh otherwise you're not going to have success but that's not true you can just put the potato into the ground uh you you can actually and a lot of people say that um that uh you have you have and myself included that you should let if you're going to cut the potato you should let it dry out a little bit for a couple of days to get like a hard scab on it kind of before you put it in the soil so ideally you would have it chitted so that you could see the chits and that you would have a hard scab on the cut if you cut it uh but but that's not necessary neither of those things are absolutely necessary you can just cut the potato put it right in the ground without any chits or or anything on it and most of the time that will work now the chitting just uh speeds up the whole process by several weeks because of the light and so uh that is why we chit and to make sure that they're viable if they just sit there for a long time and they don't chit then they're not going then they could be dead uh so if you're playing whole potatoes or if you've got 100 lb try and chit some of them that's great but you don't have to chit them you can just put them right in the ground so uh that is perfectly fine um so Freebird is planting beets and carrots and peas today yes beets guys if you're in a place like Northern Indiana or anywhere Zone 4 five 6 78 uh you can get several plantings of beets if you're like in Florida you can plant beats like all year round so the uh beets will uh grow really well right now and they'll be sweeter in the in the cooler times so for us in Northern Indiana I get we get about three rounds three plantings of the beets so I will succession sew them all summer long even up until August you can plant beets all the way into August no problem in Northern Indiana so um okay let's see talk about uh increasing the volume I wish I could I just don't know how so sorry guys if that's um it's all this Wireless I am not and you see a lot of content creators using these things I do not like this thing I do not like the road go um yeah and the uh Jay Dixon says I was going to mention Nate's getting photo bombed by the toddler on a trike I know that's Forest out there yeah bunch of kids around here right now it's an awesome family uh they started out as you know a client see there's Bonnie let's see if she sees us Bonnie hi Bonnie yeah they started out as clients you know uh but then immediately we became friends so now it's uh I really look forward to come down here in the beginning and the end of the season where we open up the garden and get it all planned out get everything uh situated so that they can have a bountiful amazing Garden like last year was unbelievable if you watch I use this Garden in several of the videos this example um definitely in the green manure video and the whole thing is covered in fabric the whole thing so there was almost no weeding I mean the the objective there's different practices for everything and so uh for some people you know um the the total no till method with the heavy organic mulches that can work really well but for other people in certain situations the green manure depending on the the type of stuff that you have a green manure crop with uh fabric sheeting plastic sheeting over the top is absolutely um the way to go because they don't have time to be out there weeding or even cultivating in between the rows and all that kind of stuff they just need to go out there and harvest and so that's um that is uh how we designed that and so that's why it's really good to have several different uh methods you have to understand several different methods guys that uh but they all function along the same lines of mimicking nature in the sense that we rely on decomposing organic matter of various types uh and we use natural stuff we don't interrupt the cycle of the soil food web now those are the foundational principles but then we can utilize different techniques based upon different areas so um that's why you want to learn as many different PL uh um techniques as you can yes Nancy says blessings from Chattanooga can't wait to see y'all later yes looking forward to seeing you as well I will have some buckets of the fertilizer if you want uh also I hope you brought a couple of your things so we could talk about them probably the FAA would be the best one to talk about um Donald Hughes hook it on your beard yeah I don't know about that so Vince ramsy see you in a few hours oh nice you'll be there all right everybody says I think the sound is good okay good we're going to roll with that because I'm not much I can do uh let's see m p says Nate thank you for keeping it simple it's complicated expensive elaborate Garden advice rules that has discouraged so many of us in the past this is absolutely true um and something that is really relevant and and uh um prominent in things like the gardening community so they will take a uh a certain they will take a certain um philosophy and just absolutely take it to the religiousness I mean to the to the sense that like it's a commandment Thou shalt never till in any way whatsoever and so it shall never disturb the soil well I thought you were no till what are you doing till guys you don't want to become stuck in an ideology ology and that that has me um that brought me to a uh comment that I received not that long ago um about the video that I made about the Spring Garden prep okay and I this illustrates this point perfectly and and this is important that's why I'm saying it because uh well you you'll see why I'm saying it so uh if you watch the Spring Garden prep video that I that I made I sort of uh in one of the areas I sort of used the broad Fork to really to really kind of uh break up the hard pan and get some of the uh Pete Moss and perlite mixture from the potato grow bags into there because the potato grow bags after 3 years now they're done so I'm going to add that soil into some of the beds and just make like a small raised bed I I like a defined line so you don't have to make a huge raised bed but just a a 2x4 you know or a pallet wood is what most of that is uh so I just made a little raised bed you know and we added some of the Viking nutrients uh which are not totally necessary it's just organic matter of various kinds going into the bed but then you know there's someone uh Mark says nature doesn't dig up the ground to incorporate fertilizer it also doesn't build raised beds to grow plants nature also doesn't use plastic to warm the soil don't claim to mimic nature when you don't don't claim to mimic nature when you don't well okay Mark uh so I I get that you know I get that completely but see Mark is possessed by an ideology he's saying okay you cannot ever do any of these things and so he's very limited in his capabilities because of that this is why I'm saying that as a gardener if if you're getting as a grower though you don't get stuck in one ideology in one technique okay and say well uh you know okay well we have to mimic nature okay so well what does that mean well that means that we can't do anything really so we have to only plant native plants only okay well then how far back do you want to go so well it has to be pre Colombian pre-european uh you know what they brought over uh it has to be that far back native okay well what about before the Native Americans you know what I mean so how far back do you want to go and so how how uh rigid is your philosophy and this is what it's this is the point this is what it's all about you have to be flexible you have to flow and adapt and learn uh uh and how to utilize this is the Viking Way the Vikings uh adapted to their to the the new technologies when they found one they would take it on and say okay well we will flow and mold and adapt we're not just going to stick rigidly to uh things that can limit us and so the um the garden right here uh cyber says a garden is not a wild ecosystem by definition of course there are differences between gardening and nature absolutely and so we don't become so rigid that all we can do is basically just sit back well nature we would just sit back and watch weeds overtake the garden you know and a lot of these permaculture these permaculture Food Forest guys and this is my opinion and and experience is that a lot of the Food Forest type permaculture type and stuff you you will go there and I've gone there to these Gardens and things and they're like yeah this is my food forest and I'm looking around at it and and I'm like okay this is cool you know but I'm struggling to find where's the food you know that there's like oh well but this this weed these little green be these little green things you know uh this this is edible and then this this little Berry is edible and I'm like okay well but that's not going to sustain you I mean I I get it that it's no maintenance and it's what nature you know is sort of you got weeds in the bottom or plants you know medicinal plants all that's great but what we're talking about doing is like sustenance gardening so where's the calories where's the food here where's the the the tubers the potatoes the sweet potatoes where's the peas and the beans and the and the stuff that's going to fill you up where's the squash and the watermelon and all that kind of stuff so you know this this is a it's a combination of all these things we're still utilizing um Claire yes definitely and I've been to enough of them to see most people or not most I don't want to paint with such a broad brush but it's a a lot of people that are into that is is like they're just into the zero maintenance part is what they're they're into the no maintenance part so they'll plant a few things and oh okay these berries and stuff yeah that's great but it's just totally overrun with weeds for the most part uh so you know we have to we have to uh do this uh venmo Lisa Turk $10 thank you very much my friend I appreciate the uh tip and says uh which Viking Brews work best to feed our trees my huge Maple gets mulch but needs more okay so trees are a different matter really the main thing now what makes you think that your huge maple tree needs more this this is important to understand so uh we would mimic nature if if we're talking about a big um big uh established maple tree we're not really going to need to add much we're going to add deciduous leaves we're going to not rake up around the maple tree so many people in the yards and things like that they want to take all the leaves and rake them up and then remove them and then fertilize the tree but that's breaking the whole cycle and so the tree fertilizes itself the tree fertilizes itself and so it does this by mining the minerals and then depositing them in its leaves and then dropping them on the soil surface and then the microorganisms decompose that and so the things that it attracts the microorganisms that are attracted the worms and all of that kind of activity is the fertilizer breaking down all of the leaves and all of that and so the most important thing for trees is is leaves uh all the way around all the way out to the drip line of the plant that's really the best way to fertilize it and there should be no need to fertilize it now if you do want to give it a boost then the air rated compost tea that you will see coming up pretty soon that's what I would give it absolutely you can spray it you can take a hoe you can whatever system you've got designed you can just spray it all over the leaves all over everything and the tree is going to love that but uh trees are very different than these fast growing plants that we have and so the um the uh um leaves is going to be what what it's all about so m p says I just use a mulching mower on the leaves now that's okay I mean if if you don't have the ability to have a ring of actual full leaves around the tree because of aesthetic reasons like you're in a neighborhood or something then mulching would be the next best thing it's still nowhere near as good as just allowing a thick layer of fluffy leaves whole leaves to rest around the tree that's the best of all because that's what it wants it keeps even moisture and it attracts the worms definitely so um that is the best definitely um so the uh St Max Media says thank you Nate for acknowledging the nonsense of food Forest I tried it and find it nonsensical yes yes now that I'm not saying that in in totality that the that it's bad I've seen some that are very functional but you also have to have your vegetable garden you also have to have the place where you're growing potatoes and corn and squash and beans and tomatoes and canning all that stuff but most most people are not really you know from a food Forest the ones I've seen and and been a part of and things it's you don't have okay when's that flush of tomatoes coming where we can all just can our stuff for the rest of the season it's very different than than um you know it it would work a lot better in the tropics for fruits it works good for fruits and and berries and nuts and things like that um but that's only one part of the thing so definitely you can get that happening on your property but you also want to have your dedicated um beds where you're growing the calorie crops um yes so the uh Justin milard says I want to grow a red beard so I can garden and command awesomeness like the big bad Viking does yes thank you very much my friend well uh you can start by eating lots of animal fats lots of fats that is the number one way to grow a beard uh it comes from the inside out so we can say that uh so I hope that that answered your question about the uh trees um I would just make sure that that mulches there and do the air rated compost tea spray all over the whole entire thing they are going to love that Lisa T says FYI if I donate on YouTube the platform keeps thir and Apple pay 15 Apple pay is 15% wow venmo and PayPal allow more for the Creator absolutely uh they only venmo only takes like 1.5% which is the lowest of all of them so uh that would be wonderful if you guys want to contribute um also to all of you guys that uh bought the Viking granular fertilizer last week uh we are sold out of the 5 gallon buckets we only had like 20 of them so those immediately sold out and uh you guys should have all got yours pretty much by now they're all shipped out the five gallon so if you didn't get it yet let me know um but I'm using FedEx and so I still have some of the one uh 33 pound ones left so if you guys want those they're 170 that includes shipping which is astronomical but I've set up an account on am on FedEx and stuff so I'm learning as we go along I have to learn all this stuff but I just see it as being the way of the future for this operation yes uh I have to yes I see it being the way of the future because I'm coming to realize guys that uh you know YouTube is not going to be paying it's not going to finance the land and the school and that is the the the objective and so I'm a very Mission oriented person and that is the mission that is the overall mission the homestead uh the school and the land and so YouTube is not going to be financing that by in any way whatsoever that's for sure it's becoming very apparent to me um um for some for you know whatever reason so the uh books that will be coming and the fertilizers and uh the video courses that I will have probably next year like Master grower uh video courses where I'll I'll be able to make some videos that are not catering to the algorithm of making little quick little bleeps and having to make it in eight minutes so I can really open up and and really convey some some deeper knowledge in the video courses but that will be like a thing that you buy you know because I'm realizing all this stuff so anyways um the uh let's see here uh Aaron Johnson says Nate could you travel to Kentucky to consult with me on my new property it would be Priceless information guys I'm always willing to do that definitely but the thing is that you have to pay to get me there I mean as far as like traveling expenses and all that kind of stuff uh which is not like a lot but that's the other part of it yes uh so yes I would be willing to do that stuff I mean hit me up we can set it up I'm open to so many things guys and definitely uh it's wonderful like that's what got us together here he was like Hey man uh you know I've got 17 acres and um bunch of kids and uh equipment and stuff but I I would like to shorten the learning curve you know I want to set up uh a garden that is just the ultimate so we can prod grow almost all of our own food for uh this family and he knew that uh I have the the experience and knowledge and so so he wanted to shorten his learning curve by like a decade and so we uh he brought me down here yes guys look at this Robin the wife uh look how sweet this is apparently like a southern thing maybe put a bunch of fruit in the water but it's super delicious Miss P yes they are in the description not of this video because I wasn't at home when I made it any of my other videos on this channel have the links to the venmo cash app or PayPal just put the 170 in there and put your address and I will get them shipped out the beginning of this coming week when I get back I've already got several of them uh that that are that way all right so uh Justin milward says if I send a ship a long ship from Vancouver Island can I get your next setup of the Viking granular uh yes definitely you could get some just make sure they can row up the mommy River my lemon says would love that in-depth resources like video courses yes yeah yeah I'm finding a good that it would be very useful because uh you have to cater to the algorithm you know when you make YouTube videos and so it has to be like like there's so much you have to leave out and which would be important for the people that want to go deeper and to understand really about reading the plants and how to know on an infinite basis what the plants are needing and what the soil needs and how to feel it and all these these deeper things um and that would be good with a um that would be good with a uh you know in-depth video course um John Jude good to see you here my friend says Hey Viking how about uh growfully with Jenna is it going to happen live oh I don't know about live that would be cool though I mean we could do two so I have been in contact with her and she's not that far from me in Ohio and so um yes we've agreed to do a Meetup in June sometime I'm going to go to her place and do a um a uh a video you know I'm going to do a video maybe she'll release well she'll release on her Channel and then we'll do a video I'll release on my channel and then maybe a live as well a special live that would be a great idea what do you guys think about that yes we will do that aive good idea let's see here Mick 170 all right thank you my friend I will get that that uh granular out when I get back beginning of next week I got it thank you B Hendrick says I love the live idea yes this is a great idea thank you for uh bringing it up Vince Ramsey says what are you covering today in Chattanooga well you know there will be a um we will start with like an introduction and I'll explain uh who I am and then I want to get some engagement from the people and see where they are at what what are they do they want to understand fertilizers do they want to understand the JD system in general and we'll go deeper into that I like to use the cues from the people see what the people are feeling what they want to know instead of just talking about what I want to know what I feel like I want to say so we'll see where it goes but it's labeled as a jam introduction so uh we will see definitely we'll we'll discuss the interconnectedness of things and the philosophy of the jam system which is but but it's so much more than that you know I'm I'm I'm not like um promoting Jam it's just that's one of many different avenues that we go yes so um Miriam $77.77 look at them angel numbers thank you very much my friend says um I appreciate you thank you I appreciate you too my friend uh yes very sweet thank you uh if you have a question remember if you guys make a donation you want to have a question answered let me know I got you um okay so uh pop perm says Ah I didn't even think to check his Amazon guys listen use the link in the description okay this is for the Inner Circle tribe so use the link in the description to go uh into my Amazon storefront and there is all the things that I use in gardening but anything that you buy on Amazon through using that link this channel will get the credit and so uh it's way better than letting Amazon keep all of it any shopping that you do so so just whenever you buy something on Amazon use the link in the description to go into Amazon and in that browser W window anything that you get it doesn't matter if it's in my storefront or not this channel will get the credit for it so do that please I know a lot of you are shopping on Amazon all the time so it's a easy way to help the channel and the cause help us get the land the school all of that so that you guys can come in person mhm uh Julie pulley says question what does it mean when Tomatoes when tomato starts have purple underleaves uh you know a lot of that can just be genetic a lot of that can be genetic a lot of it is also can be a magnesium deficiency depend but don't worry about that I shouldn't even have said that really uh but it can express itself a lack of magnesium can express itself as dark purpling of the tomatoes because of how um well magnesium is very very important very important it is the central um molecule of the chlorophyll ion and it gets used up in the process of photosynthesis and so uh a magnesium deficiency will Express itself in a lack of ability to process the sunlight okay and that can manifest itself in many different ways uh but well in tomatoes for the most part you you'll see them curling up as well anytime that the leaves will like curl up they're trying to get away from the Sun this can happen um depending on the right mixture that you have all right so um Justin says let me know oh $50 thank you very much my friend I got this uh says let me know when that granular comes back again the uh five gallons are the only thing that are are out we still got the 33 the 3.5 gallons uh so if you want some of that you can but I don't know about Canada you know apparently you're in Vancouver so I think that that is out of our uh reach because even guys even shipping stuff man you try to have like a small business or something try to start a small business and just look at the cost of everything it's just it's unbelievable it's really unbelievable I mean how how people are making a profit on any kind of little thing to ship uh one of the five gallon the 40 Pounders to any place on the west coast is like $87 and that's as cheap as I could find it across any platform until you start doing serious quantity Dbacks I will be making the air rated compost tea video yes I just have to wait for it to be warm enough to do uh in where I'm at outside so um that will be coming soon though yes so um yes thank you very much Justin uh let's see Myer lemons azomite for magnesium deficiency uh if you have straight up mag if you know that you got magnesium deficiency then uh Epsom salt would be the best way because it's very quickly available to the plants Epsom salt is magnesium and sulfur magnesium sulfur at so it's wonderful to give to the alums and things like that all right um azomite also works really well but it's a lot slower it's a lot more long release uh let's see here Alan Baler says JMS question why do you hang your bag in the side of the bucket rather than in the middle like the Jon book recommends seems like much better flow through and a better bubble pattern what do you say uh you know I've done it all the different ways and it really doesn't matter that much um as far as the end result it doesn't really matter that much it's really just a matter of preference and if I do the um if I do bigger batches of it I do put put it in the center but it just doesn't really make that much of a difference so I mean if you want to see once you do enough batches then you'll know what the bubbles are like anyways and so definitely um so um yes also okay Allan says also do we really need a tight fitting lid or just need to keep animals and insects out of the ferment and uh okay are you talking about JMS or jlf the MS uh I never said that we need a tight fitting lid you just need a lid to keep the breeze out of it and the insects out of it because you if it the breeze is getting to it then you won't be able to tell the exactly when it's ready but um uh if it's the jlf that you're talking about then um you need a tight fitting lid because it will evaporate the nitrogens will evaporate the the putrid stench will be all over the place and we don't need that so yeah um n C Kel says I have heard to apply a dissolved aspirin to the soil of and to uh and tomato to stimulate plant immunity your thoughts on this uh I I don't get down with that I mean applying aspirin and I'm just not into that definitely uh I understand the concept I think it's the PCYC acid in the um aspirin that the willow also has in it the Willow and the um the the rooting hormone that I showed the video a couple weeks ago that has the the salicylic acid in it it really helps to boost the immunity of the plants now I would not uh get down with a synthetic version in the aspirin so that's not a practice that I would recommend um oh yeah Justin milard says the aquarium heater was a game changer for JMS for anyone who has colder temps absolutely and it's really really good practice it's a good learning experience if you're making the JMS uh the microbial solution then you know how massive temperature affects all of this stuff then because you'll know because if it's the difference between it being 65° and 75° is huge and then 75 to 85° is even more huge it happens so much faster and more vigorous at about 82° and just that 10° yeah um it's it's just that you see how much and once you start having that aquarium ther thermometer uh with the thermostat on it then you can tell the vigorousness between 75 and 82 degrees is huge the speed with which so that's why uh a lot of people when they talk about microbial bruise and air rated compost tees and stuff they're not they're not uh understanding how much temperature comes into play you so yeah that's a big factor when when we do the air rated compost teas for the Brewing that is a huge Factor okay because temperature makes an enormous difference any of you guys that ferment uh like um um um kefir or the water kefir or the milk kefir or um uh that you ferment anything you'll understand how much uh temp tempure plays a role and so it's all about the division of the microorganisms and so when we that's why I haven't put out an air rated compost t video yet because you want it to be warm if it's in the 50 if the water is in the 50s uh then that's not going to that stuff's not going to breed nearly as well and we know this for sure through our firsthand experience making the um JMS because there you can see directly that's why I always recommend beginning your journey of my mobial bruise with JMS because it teaches you so much mm Dan Henry says I need a viking tribe bumper sticker yes my friend they are coming what should be on the bumper stickers guys what kind of if you're watching this after the fact let me know what would be some good Viking Garden like a viking bumper stickers that you would be willing to put onto your vehicle let's see H um uh idai muwa says what fertilizer can I use for bulb onions I want to do it right what fertilizer well like all things the most important fertilizer of all is what you put into the soil is what the roots have access to so hopefully you've amended the soil well that's more important than any liquid fertilizer and I know that that's commonly misunderstood especially maybe on this channel where people where it's all there's so many videos about making liquid fertilizers those are great but that's additional so if you put enough if you put the right combination of things in the soil you don't need anything else but water so so that it all depends on what you've put into the soil um now that being said the fish fertilizer especially before the solstice so remember onions put all of their vegetative growth out now in the days leading up to the summer solstice then once the summer solstice comes in June 20 22nd then it uh and the days begin getting shorter then it stops its vegetative production and begins bulb formation so you want it to have the maximum amount of leaves possible before the summer solstice hits so if you guys are growing onions here's the biggest tip of all make sure that you do everything you need to do to get the maximum amount of leaves by the time the solstice hits and do not top them once a lot of people top them and stuff no you you want those solar panels to be there so um the way to encourage leafy growth on any plant the way to encourage leafy growth is to fulier feed them with the fish fertilizer one or two ounces a gallon is all that you need um Bill leisure man that could be its own channel I mean that that's way in depth yeah sorry but um the uh onions though you want to do whatever you have to do to encourage the maximum foliage growth and when you fol your feed with um the fish a high Nitro like the fish fertilizer uh then that is going to encourage more leafy growth because it says oh that's where we're getting our nutrients we need more more leaves so um that's what I recommend and then once the summer solstice hits you can cut back on the nitrogen and uh fertilize with a Ash with with the ash liquid fertilizer yeah because they don't need more nitrogen at at that point and but like I said if you did the soil right if you amended the soil right then you don't need anything else and but still you could do the the foler of the fish because that's just additional and it's not going to hurt anything big West that's funny bumper sticker o Donald Hughes bumper sticker says get too close and you will be Viking compost that's a pretty good one o Scott Miller my other car is a Longboat I like that I like it ooh K says ask me about the bumper sticker could say ask me about underculture yeah yeah and you could even start a pyramid scheme um that if you if you get two friends and then they can get two friends who get two friends then you could all invest in the right type of um neon orange g strings don't get me started on I'm not going to go down that road guys not today um so part-time Greek vegan says anyone have any suggestions for groundhogs is there something they can that can com that uh can uh repel them or do they stay away from other plants that's the way to take care of them and that's about it that's about it John Jude says love that you use in the ground raised beds as I'm feeling it my best method absolutely my my favorite method is a combination between raised beds and in the ground if you watch my um Spring Garden prep video or the one I did a couple days ago about the planting the potatoes for maximum storage life you will see what I mean when I use like a combination it's not really a raised bed uh it's just like it just helps with drainage and it helps to define the area and it helps to weed it helps to know where the aisles are helps to not step on your plants and all of that and to drag the hose across things it just helps um that that's what I found and you can focus the fertility especially if you are using something like the Viking granular fertilizer then you want it to be really focused and exactly where you need it um Miriam Meadow says you can trap them and take them to another area she's talking about the groundhogs also a sprinkler on a motion sensor yeah the thing is with the trapping it's kind of like trapping rats and raccoons it's like okay well now you're going to go make it someone else's problem you know nobody likes that I mean but that's the more Humane I guess way um safan Matan says you deserve a million subs thank you for the free knowledge yes you're very welcome my friend well let um YouTube know that because man my content is is not getting much exposure uh for some reason but you know I still I'm not going to let that bother me what it's actually doing is showing me hey you need to Branch out into other things uh don't don't think that YouTube's going to be paying for the land and the and the school and all that it's not it's so it's you got to really get serious and finish the book that this winter or this fall and winter you got to get serious about the Viking granular fertilizer line uh and you got to get serious about the video courses things like that while still making good content so uh yeah so it's actually been a blessing you know um let's see here Jay Dixon says yes today the jam natural farming revolution with Nate muray 4:30 to 6:30 at the crab tree farms man look at you you are on it that is uh you're like a AI kind of like got access to all kinds of stuff so this is wonderful uh that's good cuz I didn't even have the address so I I should uh look at that so yes thank you very much uh let's see Nancy dewald $20 thank you very much my friend I appreciate you and says uh for in City how how grossed out with rats eating on veggie oh man it's no joke I know uh eating for rats eating the veggies I know it's uh terrible let's see here gross out with the rats eating on the veg I know it's it's terrible um not something that you want to have happen but uh if rats are eating on the veg you have to get them out of there you have to there's nothing if they're eating on the veg then they're hungry so you have to trap them the only way is to trap them or to get like a cat or something um but something has to remove them there's nothing you can do that repels them uh Miss p i I missed this one $5 thank you my friend says congrats on adding a thousand subscribers just since yesterday is that for real I don't even I don't even look at it anymore but that's awesome uh and then Pap perm $2 you're amazing thank you very much my friend I appreciate you thank you uh and that that reminds me of uh you know there was a comment someone made like a comment after the fact of one of the past live streams where uh someone made a donation it was in Canadian dollars it was like $5 Canadian uh and I made a joke I was like you know oh what's what's the conversion rate these days is that like a150 you know and they they perceived that as I was being ungrateful you know but that's absolutely not how it was I meant no disrespect whatsoever it comes from years of traveling where everybody kind of heckles each other about the conversion the strength of their money uh of of their currency especially if your currency is the dollar the US dollar then you can everybody about the strength of their currency so that's where it came from you know I was like kind of just giving the Canadians a hard time about that uh meant no disrespect whatsoever I I it's if anybody that wants to contribute any amount it doesn't matter at all so I I appreciate it completely it's the spirit that really matters so it doesn't matter if it's a $150 that's not what I was saying so I but I assume everybody knew that but someone made that comment so I just wanted to address that uh and and let you know that I'm all about man I I really am all about jesting and sort of like if you know me in person I'm constantly light-hearted about things you know and really giving people yeah it's my language you know it's my love language in a way so uh Taylor reyle $20 thank you very much my friend says keep making great videos we all learn from yes I will absolutely do that no doubt uh I will absolutely do that um yeah Lisa T says my tech buddy told me mention of illegal anything in the video or chat hurts your algorithm if it's flagged yeah you know I've heard that as well but then I look at other channels that are just doing talking about straight up hardcore stuff I mean deeply conspiracy stuff and deep you know guns and all kinds of stuff and they've just getting thousands and thousands and thousands of views you know um so I mean for example I mean a lot of you guys know I did a collaboration last year at this time with pinball preparedness Channel and he's constantly talking about stuff that is is not cool with the algorithm uh and yet he gets like 60,000 views a day I mean his videos he puts out two videos a day and each one gets like 30 or 40 or 50,000 views twice a day every day it's crazy so um anyways uh yeah and I'm not complaining about any of that at all it's actually it's a it's a good thing see this is all part of the thing that we talk about on Thrive like a viking uh every Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. uh on on Thrive like a viking channel is that you just learn uh you you see what is happening and you adjust and adapt and Thrive anyways so okay if your views if you make a video is getting 5,000 views and not getting shown to anybody none of your followers and stuff then uh that's fine use that uh to tell you it's a Learning lesson what's that trying to tell you that's trying to tell me not to rely on YouTube AdSense to be my income Source or my sole income sort so that's not going to finance the goal so now we're seeing that more clearly you know uh and so instead you have to Branch off into other things and so uh that's what we're doing so we're using it as a blessing and that's why we're not concerned about it um so Jerry Bates says stay the course and follow the vision absolutely my friend there's zero doubt about that I I am uh absolutely focused in in life and uh I know exactly where we're going and so the thing is that yeah exactly what I've been talking about so you learn to flow with it and and you just remind yourself of the image and you just see the image of where you're going and it's uh fantastic so Justin says Nate knows how to Pivot he understands and grows forward not goes forward he grows forward word nice I like that absolutely yeah you pivot and you you see and you adjust and adapt and you don't get all bogged down in the storyline oh man I'm putting all this work into these videos and nobody's seeing them and the algorithm's not is not doing me good and stuff hiding my content you know a lot of people get lost in that and then it's oh but not me whatsoever she's like okay is that what's happening well how do I adjust how do I adapt how am I going to play that to my advantage anyways you know uh and that's just the way that I've trained myself to be over the years so um the uh yeah and Jerry uh I would like to talk I would like to have you man we should video chat sometime like tomorrow it just for like a half hour because there's a Justin here would really like to pick your brain briefly about how you get that beef so tender because uh uh we're having issues with that here you know uh with the the beef is is kind of real tough and so I'm sure he would love just like a 20 or 30 minutes with you uh tomorrow so maybe we can make that happen in some way we could use Google meet uh anyways guys do you have any tips does anyone and we're in the South now so we can talk about fig trees do you have any experience with pruning fig trees so how far back should they be cut I don't have any experience with fig trees yet I've got the Chicago hardy figs that we're growing now but um uh how far back do you cut the figs and how often do you do that this fig tree he's got this bush is getting totally out of control so can you cut it do you cut it all the way to the ground do you cut it to the first set of nodes do you leave some nodes or what do you have any advice anybody um William Montgomery says uh good morning Nate from California any advice on planting ground cherries first time trying them ground cherries are wonderful they are in the Tomato family and so they will grow in a similar way they like really rich soil with mulch over it and the best trellis for the ground cherries is a v-shaped trellis of like wooden laugh you know what I'm talking about so if if you plant your ground cherries like this about every 3 feet about every 3 fet in really rich soil with mulch over it grass clippings uh or leaves once the soil warms up they like the heat that so they're in the Tomato family so don't plant in cold wet soil uh if you do have Sun remove that Mulch and get it warming up but then plant the ground cherries and then the way to do it is a v trellis uh with the laugh so that the plants will grow up that and hang on to that and then the cherries will drop because you only eat them once they drop to the ground that's when they are ready fully ripe is when they drop to the ground so uh do not eat them beforehand cuz the flavor is totally different it will not be developed all right um so that's the way to do it the V trellis super important about 2 feet long maybe and uh that will make the harvesting so much easier um yeah sorry some people say they can't hear me I just don't know how much man maybe I should do like this what do you guys think is that I should have been doing it like this the whole time um so the oh Jason Hy says got here late was just applying my Viking fertilizer to the beets and carrots I have up already yes you can top dress with it and guys the the dosage I'm going to make a short video coming up on how to apply it the dosage is sort of you know needs to be um needs to be uh worked out a little bit I mean but because I can't give an exact recommendation so on like a for on a bed that is like 4 by 12 we'll say uh I would use between two and three quarts of and gently incorporate in the top inch or so of the soil between two and three quarts to sprinkle out evenly in there um if you have like a 10 gallon grow grow bag you want to use like A4 cup you know a quarter to a half half of a cup maybe if it's 10 15 20 gallons a half cup uh if you've got like a 30 gallon grow bag at least a cup you know maybe maybe even cup and a half or two something like that so it was better on the shirt okay sorry guys yeah see and that's part of the thing that's part of the thing that the internet teaches you as well is that you can't like listen to everybody you know because it's better for some people and not other people and it just is what it is so um yeah I know man I just can't stand this stuff but anyways I can try and talk a little bit louder but um okay cesal Cronin says hearing you well in Western Australia is that not crazy I mean just alien technology that we are that you are hearing me and you're in Western Australia and I'm in Chattanooga Tennessee uh Stephanie Stevens says figs cut back to about three to four nodes from the main stem okay how often Paul banham says better on the shirt chap okay um okay so let's see Drew black says figs can take a severe pruning doesn't matter okay it doesn't matter or they will uh they're better in certain places or the other you know um yeah I just can't adjust it I know I know I'm going to listen to this after the fact and it's going to be super quiet so sorry about it just um uh so Freebird says Nate is it too late to start Ginger no it is not start Ginger but get that heat pad going and set that thermostat at 90 degrees Ginger likes it hot you can set that therat at 90 degrees on the heat mat get it started and uh you will still get Ginger absolutely make sure it's in very rich soil guys I found this out over the past four years Ginger likes really rich soil and so I um I uh applied a lot of the I I applied in it was in a 30- gallon grow bag and last year I applied probably a quart maybe not quite that much of the Viking granular fertilizer in a 30- gallon grow bag it was a court I think uh in the 30 G grow bag and then I planted that ginger in there and that stuff just grew I mean the stuff was like 4 feet tall and just bursting out of that bag and by September late September there was huge thick chunks of Ginger popping out of the soil they they were like nice pink Ginger and usually um Ginger that we grow in the colder areas is real small you know this Ginger was thick and plump and tender and delicious best ginger I ever grew by far and it was up against a north south privacy fence so it only got half the day of sun of direct sun the rest of the day was in full shade um so super rich and full shade because the stuff that I had in the full sun did not do as well it just scorched it just kind of scorched and so the um thank you guys Jeff briman and spinster Drew black okay good I'm glad you're saying the sound is good uh but the stuff that I had in the full sun with the same amount of f fertilizer just scorched it's just too hot it just didn't do good it just survived um so DLR yeah it's not too late for ginger just get it going and ideally get it going in a pot I mean if you're if you're late because ginger doesn't even begin ryome production until four months into its growth can you imagine that so that's why it takes so long that's why they grow it in like Hawaii and Mexico and tropical places um so the ginger we gr here you want to make it so that it uh start it now and harvest it as late as possible um but if you feed it enough and you keep it in half Sun then you're going to have success um there was a uh someone sorry it was way back up here I don't know if I can even find it now um [Music] um let's see here Cody Lee says Society has everybody corrupted not everyone these days are likeminded as the Viking tribe brother keep your head up absolutely I get you my friend definitely and we know the algorithm caters to stuff that's a bit nonsensical isn't it you know they don't want this kind of stuff really getting out there um because because people like us that are like growing food and learning these skills and stuff that's not um what they want you know they want people that are just mindlessly watching little dancing videos of some girl that makes a stupid face and then it's got 200 million views you know I think what value added is is that and I'm making content that I'm trying to think okay what is the value of all of that but whatever uh so it uh there was one someone made it thing that said Okay Michael Lanning hi Nate don't mean to be a bother but I'm curious if you receive my email from last Sunday I'm concerned it may have ended up in the junk inbox okay I don't know uh if I got that so I don't um email guys I get tons of emails okay tons of emails and and um so a good way is Instagram Direct message me on Instagram uh here on one of the the uh gardening videos you can definitely do email can work it's just it might be some time before I get to you um but uh direct message me on Instagram or uh the Discord chat if you mention me in the Discord chat but the Discord chat is like self-sufficient at this point it's like everybody's just going at it so all kinds of good stuff going on there um cyber says what about planting ginger in a contractor bag like the sweet potato good or no yeah that would be fine so long as you don't move the bag ever that's the thing with the grow bags you never move them uh CU it would break the roots and disturb them so you uh can plant them in the grow bags no problem and I saw somebody asked about how many slips per grow bag uh if they're growing sweet potatoes in there then you want to put about three slips in each bag I found as the ideal number no more because they'll be too crowded okay good Michael Isabelle says hello from Quebec Canada I am in zone 5A your channel helps me a lot thank you definitely you're very welcome my friend Jeffrey says congrats on 151,000 subs thank you yes it's wonderful uh Rod JR says if starting Ginger inside on a heat mat when do you transplant plant you will transplant the ginger well after the last frost cuz Ginger is not even remotely Frost tolerant so you will plant it outside only once all danger of Frost has passed and the soil is sort of warmed up so um the heat loving stuff like our last frost day is May 15th technically in Northern Indiana uh and so that's when you can plant stuff but so I'll plant like tomatoes and peppers around that time give or take a little bit later even uh but the stuff like sweet potatoes and uh squash and um watermelon that really like the heat I'll wait even until like two weeks after that almost like June 1st is a good time for that for for tahan melon squash June 1st and it will grow so fast and so vigorous it will blow your mind so Heather fox says I couldn't find you on the Discord what do I put in to find Nate uh I'm not sure about that but you can use the link in the description of not this video I didn't put the links in there but any of the other videos on the channel there's a there's an invite to the Discord I think you put um something about the Viking Garden like a viking probably try George Kelly says I thought you were in Indiana did you move to Chattanooga no we didn't move here definitely not it's too hot for me here and the winters are not cold enough uh but we are here helping a friend we are installing his uh food security Garden sorry Joe slack says do you ship outside the US to Southern Ontario Canada no we don't ship these containers outside um no sorry we can't do that um o MP that's a great idea says I had good success last year by placing the grow bags in a cardboard box and stuffing straw around them to keep the root Zone cool and moist I like that another good way is you can plant things like collared greens alongside the bags if you have a row of bags of grow bags or even cloth pots or whatever it is uh or even pots of any kind shade them out by growing a green uh there definitely very helpful so um rod says I have inside ginger that's a foot tall how to transplant uh if you watch my video how to grow ginger in any climate it will show you but essentially you will just take them and uh shake them apart the roots are really thick and really kind of alien looking so you can just shake each little Clump apart and place each Clump about 8 Ines to a foot away from each other because they are going to put more romes out over the year over the season so that's what you want to do so um let's see here usually I have a bunch of stuff that I can talk about you know but I I don't have my supplies I don't have my stuff here right now uh Tammy F says I have some onions going to seed should I cut the flowers off and eat those first uh did you plant sets were they onion sets or are they green onions or what uh because they should not be trying to flour if you planted onions in the way that we do it here from seed you should not be having them flour but if they're onion sets then there's nothing you can do once the plant decides okay it's not sets you grew them from seed and they're starting to flow that sounds strange yeah not uh sure so yeah you can cut them off or you can just let them them go to seed and um collect those seeds for the following year Dove says it's raining here in Colorado would it be good to direct so or will I risk them being washed away direct so what I'm not sure oh Miss T says greetings I was very surprised that I was able to do the Discord chat it was actually pretty easy step by step okay good yes uh Q Henry says what spacing can I use to plant tomatoes in a greenhouse in Africa okay well it won't really matter that you're in Africa uh it will just matter that you're in a greenhouse and that what um trellising method are you using so that's the most important what type of tomato are you growing and what type of trellis are you using um because if you're doing the string trellis method then you can plant them as close as every foot if you're really trying to pack them in there for Market gardening um but if you are doing like cages or if you're just letting them sprawl then you're going to want like every three to four feet all right um so it's going to uh be a little bit different depending on these things and what kind of thing are you talk are you um growing what what kind of tomato cherry tomatoes or big huge ones uh Brian Arie says Nate how are the coal mats working where you are at looks like a good idea well yes I mean it's a great idea if you have the heavy machinery to to be able to to work it if you have the Manpower and the heavy machinery because uh man they are heavy but nothing is growing up through them and they are permanent it it's a we got some because we're here in Tennessee so there is some uh um used uh conveyor belt from a coal mine yeah it's really thick and like indestructible and so it's um and it's four feet wide and so we lay it down and that makes the Alleyways nothing is growing up through it it's not getting blown away by the wind it's permanent so uh that's really nice so it has worked good yeah yeah it's worked good definitely Jason Hy yes I did get what you sent to the po. Box absolutely I sent you an email a responding a little bit so check your emails so thank you very much yes it was there the Raven was in the PO box when I went to it and uh I should have known you should have well I wish I would have seen that before we met up with the fertilizer I would have brought you a 30 lb bag of the the worm castings I have a bunch of bags of worm castings from um from the uh back to Earth workor Works my my uh visitation there um okay Myer lemon says is it too late to start more tomatoes and peppers in zone six no absolutely not are you kidding um zone six and 7 no it is not uh too late even in Northern Indiana zone 5 sl6 it's not too late at all uh the main reason that people start tomatoes so early is because they want them earlier but if you um if that doesn't matter you can actually in zone six and seven you can actually have volunteer Tomatoes you can actually plant them direct sew them right now and uh they will yield fruit it won't be till the end of the um of the towards the end of the summer so that's the main issue with tomatoes uh and pepper Peppers uh you'll want to get on that though Peppers you'll want to get on because they especially if you want them for like the homemade paprika uh it can be very um it can take a long time for them to ripen yes that's the problem is uh peppers they need such a long time if you're eating them green and stuff not a problem but if you are waiting for them to ripen completely and get that full flavor then uh it take it can take a long time Jerry Bates says is worm castings good for compost tea yes that will be an optional part of our recipe here coming up the compost tea with the worm castings is going to be good okay welcome to the truth says yellow tips on my garlic from the recent cold here in Indiana zone 5 same as you two hours away going to try to get to your local and get some granular fertilizer that would be good New Growth has no yellow so am I good uh yes it's uh also that's the first sign that the garlic is hungry it's probably not from the cold unless it was like really cold which I don't think it has been that cold there uh garlic is extraordinarily hungry so pretty much no matter what you're going to get the yellow tips and it will begin to pull the nutrients from the oldest growth first to give it to the new growth and so um the older leaves are going to turn the yellow first and that's going to um manifest in the tips so that's a sign that you want to fertilize you want to give them some fertilizer definitely so uh let's see what are you guys talking about um Donald Hughes says carrots are not coming up what do I need to do well carrots are very tricky so I use the board method to germinate the carrots carrots but uh you want to make sure that they stay moist because carrots are so delicate if you bury them you can only have like an eighth or a/4 inch of soil at the most uh even soil sonum on the soil and just watered in um that is a really good way if they dry out even one time so it the thing is if the sun comes out and the soil gets baked after they've broken their dormy this the carrot seed and it gets super dry then they're dead that's it so if it's been but they can take a long time so if if it's been like three weeks to a month and they haven't come up you should replant them definitely yes listen Lisa T says Tomatoes as late as July we bury the suckers deep in the ground and get tomatoes definitely you can do that um let's see Andrea Brown says does heat make the garlic yellow I Fe I feed them but they are yellowing a bit well what kind of heat and what did you put into the base into the soil that's most important um but there's really I mean garlic just always has yellow leaves to to a certain degree in my experience so um yes Meer lemons yes fish fertilizer for the garlic definitely Joshua IMA says I love watching your videos I am from Zambia all right my friend um now for garlic what fertilizer the fish fertilizer guys if you're the fish fertilizer is the best pretty much of all that you can utilize so shower overhead with the fish fertilizer sprinkle some wood ash around the garlic um and let it get watered in there over time time very much so if you've got the Viking nutrients and the granular and you've already planted your garlic do like I've done and sprinkle some over the top not a whole lot but just sprinkle some over the top and let it get watered in every time that you water it yes Jay Dixon says carrot starting seed from seed keep evenly moist barely cover and be patient yeah definitely I will uh sprinkle the carrot seeds and then water them in really good and put a board on top of them for at least the first five days and then I'll start checking and as soon as I see them really sprouting they I'll take the board off flip it to the side um but it's that first five days that you have to pretty much check it like twice a day if you if you're not using the board method then you pretty much have to like water them at least it's like twice a day because I plant the carrots in soiless growing medium most of the time in the fluffy mix and so that is um it dries out really fast yes busy girl says there is so much rain here still kind of cold can you transplant carrots now I never had success transplanting carrots and I've never really heard of transplanting carrots so unfortunately no that because any of those kind of things um they're not going to like to be transplanted because they are the tap route I mean they don't like to be disturbed uh let's see here Myer lemon says Nate better to Trellis melons or let them sprawl what kind of melons very important what kind of melons um so if it is like uh if it is full-size watermelons there's no need to Trellis them uh alib Babas and stuff like that they are designed to sprawl on the ground and uh shade out stuff so they can climb a little bit but they then you'll have to be um hammocking the um the melons otherwise they'll pull they won't get so big that they'll just pull the vine down so cantaloupe varieties uh yeah pretty much better it's always better to let them kind of sprawl on the ground in my experience uh a trellis also would work fine um it just depends on the space but like commercial Growers will do it in a wide open field and that's uh how I've also had great success with that type of method because it Shades out the soil keeps everything nice and you don't have to worry about um uh supporting the melons that's you know I've grown the tahan melon squash up at trellis and it it just they get so big that just it just pulls the vine down eventually and and it all it just kind of breaks it or they won't get as big as they normally would because they'll sense that they're going to break itself yes yes DLR says I use the board method too I think Martha Stewart made it famous is that right Martha Stewart I haven't heard that name in a long time uh Stephanie Steven says I'm afraid to open the seven gallon fertilizer that sat all winter with nettle dandelion leaf mold Etc never stirred uh it will be perfectly fine it should be nice and digested so uh that really is one of the best I mean to make it and let it digest over the winter time it should be fine it shouldn't matter that you didn't stir it it'll be just fine uh let's see here Claire says I just used the board method for the onions and three days in some are straightening up absolutely if you start with uh if you start with good healthy onion plants then they will absolutely perk right back up so they'll be laying down at first and they might look kind of weak but after four or five days or a week they'll be standing straight up no problem oh man Jeffrey says is supporting melons the title of a new underculture video possibly yes yes a whole new wave of underculture melon support uh DB can you use fish and epsom salt to fol your spray yes you definitely can yes Epsom salt works good as a foler spray because it's a good um source of magnesium right to the leaves and any of your aliums is going to appreciate the sulfur that is in the Epsom salt that definitely no don't worry Andrea Brown I will not start that again yes let's see here um scarecrow Valley says sorry I got a late Nate cannabis seeds just popping all jayd this year nice good luck with that remember it all starts in the soil the base fertilizer is most important um Miss T says will the tomato plants peel back up as well once you plant them in the ground they definitely should the tomato plants can take a moment but hopefully you buried them quite a ways so remember tomato plants are one of the few plants that will put St uh Roots up along its Vine so if you when you plant them you can bury it yes uh in the ground and they will put uh so when I plant the tomato plants that's why I don't mind if they get nice and big indoors because so long as they're hardened off properly then I will plant them outside and bury them deep and uh all the part that you bury into the soil is going to um produce Roots it's going to eventually grow roots and so um that is what I like to do with that and it will perk back up but tomato plants will just kind of sit there for some time especially if the soil's not super warm yet uh and then once they they're situated they'll just explode with growth yes yes yes uh let's see rad JR says do you plant tomatoes vertically or horizontally uh it depends if um in I've had some raised beds where the the bottom was like uh concrete kind of it was like impenetrable so that I would go sideways but no I would do it deep do it do it um vertically plant them vertically because then it will go out into the soil and it will be able to draw moisture and nutrients from a a wider range and it will make it more uh resistant to Drought yes and it's all about consistent watering a lot of people that think that their Blossom Indra is caused by calcium is not necessarily that way it's from a a inconsistent watering uh and so although calcium also plays a role in it definitely big roll but you want it to have a consistent watering so Tomatoes will like to have a layer of leaf mulch some kind of mulch around the tomatoes where the roots are because that is going to make it so that they uh don't experience such huge fluctuations of water when you guys have tomatoes that split it's because of inconsistent watering it's because they're sort of dry and then they get like a heavy rain or a heavy watering and then they swell up so fast that the skin splits yes and we don't want this oh yeah I know welcome to the truth says I'm getting anxious waiting on my winter wheat to get to seed have four new beds for the early stuff yes I know it's um let's see what is the time it's still not time yet it's going to be about another two weeks two to three weeks uh I need my tea um it's going to be another two to three weeks before you can uh really Harvest that stuff at the ground level if we're green manuring it remember anytime we can do it but um if we're going to do it no till we need to wait until the uh Brett we need to wait until that milk stage happens very important yes the winter wheat I know and I've done it several times where I just got anxious and thought okay well I'm just going to cut it down now because it needs I need to be planting stuff and it just it will just grow back it's grass it will just grow back like grass until it goes to seed yes Lisa T says Tomatoes ours did great with deep mulch of shredded leaves absolutely Tomatoes love the mulch especially of leaves Brian AR says Nate what's the smallest space you can grow tahisha melon in well that depends it's uh the more space they have and the more nutrients they have the bigger they're going to be and the larger their leaves I mean when I was growing them using the Ruth Stout method at the temple Garden many years ago now um and I had horse manure they they were grown in pure horse manure with the ru Stout method then I made these big uh dishes and where I just laid down shovel loads of of composted horse manure literally planted the tahan squash right in a pile of horse manure with uh hay it was hay not straw it was uh because I had big round bales of hay and uh that's what I put you know a couple feet all around those tahan squash were insane I mean the leaves on those things were like this big two feet across and the stock on the the main stock on the on the vine was like this and I I probably got seven to 10 the tahan squash that were mind-blowingly big I mean were so big I I haven't gotten them that big since because I haven't grown them in that that rich of of in that way but they were like this big and just huge I mean 30 lbs you know these these tahan squash but likewise I've grown them in not nutrient-rich place and the vines much smaller the squash are much smaller much more manageable you know like double the sides of a good butternut squash that kind of thing so um just give it a try give it a try you know um so yes give it a try yeah B Hendrick says grow squash vertically to save space yes you definitely can do that it will save some space if if you're going to try and grow it vertically though I I would recommend like the honeynut squash it doesn't store as long as the butternut or the tahan but they the the the honey nut squash are only like this this big you know they're only like maybe this big and uh they're very sweet and very delicious but the vine will easily climb up like a cattle panel Arch and it'll be loaded with the honey nut squash in fact I'll probably grow that this year on one of the Arches that I have and um that's the way to do it instead of the tahan squash is like that just needs to have space that's for people that have space and uh can let it grow on the ground uh Val says I'm planting Amish paste this year what do you think went wrong yeah are you talking about the Amish paste tomatoes what went wrong with them probably the fact that they are just a very weak plant in the sense that they are super susceptible to um blight and stuff like that they're just naturally very don't have a very robust immune system but I'm still planting a bunch of them this year because of how good the tomato is super dense super meaty and a bunch of them uh per plant uh Joe lizen says uh most of my vegetable plants have pale green to yellowish leaves I have used mainly many oak leaves in my compost to create the soil still decompose Browns in the soil are the Browns stealing the nitrogen uh you could post pictures to the Discord chat and I'd be able to tell for sure but probably um in the sense if you Incorporated it into the soil yes if you're doing a a a a mulch layer not so much A lot of people are under the illusion that if you put like oak leaves or wood chips on top of the soil that it's going to just pull like literally suck the nitrogen out of the soil it doesn't really work like that it it only is in the tiny space where the actual carbon source is in contact with the soil uh that's where the microorganisms are going to need that nitrogen so if you incorporate the stuff into the soil that will um that will be a problem but if they're having yellowing leaves they're needing nitrogen so for whatever reason the compost wasn't finished or they're not getting something that they need so so you need to jump start that stuff with the fish fertilizer with the grass jlf definitely the fish fertilizer okay let's see Val says hm hate to have failed tomatoes do you have Amish paste that you're planting this year is that why you're talking about um Nathan Johnson do you interplant your squash with sweet corn uh no you're probably talking about the three sisters type mentality and the Three Sisters is dry corn dry beans and dry squash or of course dry squash but winter squash yes so this a storage varieties so we are not um planting the squash and so the three sisters with sweet corn it will not work um so okay guys we are at 90 minutes and we got to get on with our day because we are got to be at the crab tree farms here in Chattanooga at 4:30 actually we'll be there much earlier than that so I hope to see you guys there I will have some buckets of the fertilizer I still have some buckets of the Viking granular uh at home so if you guys want that
