Little League Baseball 2019 Virginia vs Louisiana | Elimination Game

down for for about 45 minutes gives way to a sky that looks like that picture postcard night all of a sudden here if you're joining us at the top of the hour you win we welcome you to ESPN's coverage of this Little League World Series presented by t-mobile and what a game we have this elimination game winner goes on to play for a United States Championship and these two teams have been kind of near the top of their regions and States all summer long there was an awareness that this Louisiana team from just outside of New Orleans Bay the kids from New Orleans we're really gonna be good this year the same for the kids from south riding Little League in Virginia they knew they were gonna be good Kuras sound knocks out South Korea about the performance today by Clay Winkler first in a grand slam and that got the entire Carosa crowd and island all fired up and then they turned it over to this dude curly Martha he faced five and he struck all of them out they didn't have a chance against him today so Kurosawa in Japan has set the winner will win the international championship that game Saturday on ABC at 12:30 Eastern Time and we have Hawaii already in the United States title game and they'll get the winner of this one Virginia and Louisiana all right we are ready for baseball Julie Foudy is all fired up she'll join us in just a moment David Ross Kyle Peterson look you hope you'll get into a tournament and certain things unfold the way that this one has and this should be a phenomenal game two great starting pitchers on the mound start with a cue actually got hit for the first time Justin Lee last night he did that nobody hit Virginia pitching the first two in fact their first two games were no-hitter no-hitter Justin Lee would complete game in one of those a little different story against Hawaii but I think this coaching staff from Virginia recognized it right away which is why they've got Justin Lee out when they did so he could come back today because you can see when the stuff is right Justin Lee has been one of the main reasons why Virginia's here it's a first-time Virginia's been in this Little League World Series since 1994 for more on Virginia it's added Julie Foudy that's right I talked to coach about and actually about the craziness of last night he said look we would like less crazy tonight we do not want to repeat it last night they said very unusual for this team to commit that Meniere's they want to clean it up they did mention that Justin Lee starting on the mound as you were discussing having a bit of a back issue he was stretching it in the training room before the game I saw him on the bench before warm-ups he said it feels fine I'm ready to go most importantly I talked to the guys and said all right how was the turnaround last night they said we had pizza all in the world big subjects everything better the man I think we can all agree that pizza generally makes everything better if the back is right he's gonna be good but sometimes you know hitting can't cause good pitching some trouble and they got a really good hitter on Louisiana oh you're exactly right Reese Roussel he's absolutely rape talk about a man swing this kicking hit it's the arm field Reese Russo he's been the star of this tournament multi hits in each of his four games so far he's 9 for 13 2 doubles his knight hits lead to this tournament he's been an absolute stud they got another guy on this team jarick de la he can flat-out rig I mean these guys in two of the top three hitters in this tournament come for this Louisiana team they can hit combined 15 for 23 they rigged Reese coots down the line I mean he's a stud he's a stud he's a stud that's sort of a long and short of it if you will Roussell mine hits two last six hits we got 15 between them United States I haven't met a lot of homers but Brady gates on the other side port Virginia has one of them he of course will be in the lineup tonight it's the orange of he's got his work cut out for him today this Virginian group 349 is a team in this tournament they can flat-out hit you got a big-time fastball no one runs so far but you're right he didn't get hit around by that Hawaii team that how I team is really good at putting bat on the ball legit no just Burt chase bulbs garden led things off last night and we saw him also try to avoid a tag at home plate seem to land awkwardly on his shoulder he was looked at by the training stuff and he's okay and he's back in here tonight as oaks garden tours that one o pitch in for a fastball that big first strike guy only about 37% of his pitches in therefore first strikes once he finds it though you can see that it can groove it it'll son behind it tonight three straight fastballs for Luke to start it nasty breaking pitch and a strikeout to start it I've got one of those two three fast balls and then this one and that's that's not really fair at 12 it's all the way around it looks like a fastball right down to middle bottom drops out first out to strike out alright so we're cooking oil we've got one strike cut Brandi radiates has a home run here at the Little League World Series [Applause] [Applause] you see a lot of these kids who identify other sports athletes as their favorite a lot of these kids play multiple sports and another one fouled off that was almost a replay of the prior pitch and the same result [Applause] he's a basketball center on his basketball team at 5-8 127 whoops miss Marshall ooh club tonight he's coming out hot you could tell in the warm-ups he looked like he had a different gear tonight than the last time we've seen it on the mound just the four-seamer here it is right up in the zone two foul balls and you know what here I come strike three back-to-back punches and all right here's Lee it should be a good matchup breaking ball he swings over the top of that he's walked four times Lee good eye six runs for four six had a huge regional you can see what he did there with the five bombs the Oh 171 miles an hour that yellow box lights up mound is 46 feet away on the inside corner at Marshall Luke strikes out oaks garden Yates and Lee and it didn't take him but 10 pitches to get it done Wow striking out your side is the thing then that works that okay punched out on the breaking ball to follow the hedges beyond the outfield at la MIDI and Virginia and Louisiana go to the bottom of the first elimination game winner to the United States Championship it's been a long summer but boy it can culminate with a championship that would make Adamson fresh here we are with this team from Louisiana there's the guy that basically started a little league about six years ago along with Derick de latts dad those two are in charge there Derick de lat and Scott Frazier they six years ago I didn't have a little big day here watching teams like Lake Charles Louisiana and Lafayette Louisiana traditional powers in that state make it to the League World Series in around that New Orleans area there was no Little League so six years ago they built one and if you build it you may someday end up there on that field here in South Williamsport that's a shot for you right there now you see Justin Lake kind of making sure that back is loose and stretched out March - Luke strikes out the side on tan pitches and here comes this Louisiana fence it's Ryan Dara rescrew cell and then Luke all right his strike zone is looking good tonight for these guys there's a different energy in the stadium tonight I feel like both teams came with their a game coming bringing that good energy big-time game tonight that's nasty until already just a little bit first two pitches a little more center cut yesterday it gets too white lead along those balls drifting middle in the head Oh to set up outside that's where it is and strikeout for the starter for Virginia dad proud of that got the lucky Celtic green hat on got a little three leaf clover in the corner the way Leah's play it all summer long not a lot of luck associated with his success it's another good matchup here we've talked about Reese Roussel his ability of the hit he's had some great postgame interviews kind of simplifies it and he's incredibly confident love listen to him talk about what his approach is how he clears his mind when he gets in the box just wants to get in there has tons of confidence says he just tells that picture to bring it that's a good pitch in there for a strike his nickname LaRue sells is 380 he was kind of talking some trash with some kids saying he hits it 380 feet on this dinger as his teammates and one of his more importantly one of his friends mom's overheard it so that led to the 380 what a mom hears it you know you're kind of toast Mads now it's gonna stick that's circulating in a group of people that is not gonna let him live that one down a little late little plastic ladybug that they rubbed for good luck I told him as good as he's hitting you better be careful keep that thing hidden there's gonna be big leaguers knocking at your door for that ladybug you keep hitting 700 one two good take another guy to keep our eye on is the salt and pepper behind home plate no whole pepper love the pepper what Roussel does though man he makes you kind of pitched a little differently you stay away he's got home run power for sure hasn't hit one yet over the wall three two challenge shot this one to the left-center field gap going back and he won't get it race free sell unbelievable picks up his 10th hit at the Little League World Series he's 10 for 14 a double oh man grab you talked about it this is exactly what he does he gets in back into the count even when you fall get ahead of him he to continues the foul balls off waits on his pitch and get something he can drive I can't tell you how many two strike hits we've seen him drive into the gap hit the other way great approach for such a young established hitter right here's marshal Luke first pitch to him misses let me think about this think about baseball players whether any level and Roussel has not been retired in consecutive at-bats that's nuts just a fifth game it hasn't been retired twice in a row multiple hit games every time here and in and as many of no-hit ball as we've seen he just continues to hit to all fields Luke Wow just missed that it's going to go foul and I don't want to stay down that's pretty good hat flashing that bad [Applause] now the beauty of a good lineup is that you know if you ever were to consider walking someone left your cell you got a deal with a big-time hit her like Luke here that one is lifted sky-high it's playable Ross is coming so is thyine and hoop lion fails out at the left seats and I appreciate a center fielder that's going to go and track one down but man you you're invading general Rajas turf oh yeah quit hogging the ball and you see him right there oh oh hey I mean we need one of those stat cast right Joel or no rule 15 feet Liam moved 150 strike one - another really good hitter this is Conor parrot he's the first baseman it's got five runs batted in part of that is because Roose sells on base all the time but even that high fly out from Luke sounded a little different yeah see too many little league fly balls that go that high this one to right field that's where Bowden is he's come in and he makes the play so Justin Lee works around a rescrew sell double one inning in the books feels like we're in for a good one here tonight at the wind league world series series Louisiana set to take the field one more time gets a little dark at the top of the hill but boy there's the diamond down the bottom of it you got to get to and that of course is lava tea stadium marshal Luke he threw 10 pitches he struck out the side in the top of the first inning Marshall is a huge kid who's got a huge heart he is a role model to his brother and vice versa brother Maddox he had to deal with kidney cancer diagnosis three years ago this March had a stem cell transplant at the hospital man this is what you do if you're a Luke brother when you're feeling up to it you're getting a bat and to the credit of the hospital they realize we got to get this guy up and doing what he loves to do it he was just gripping the ball in the hallway Julie is with the parents hey Maddox I got Carmen I got Maddox I guess baby and I got the whole family here Maddox they were just rolling your video that's a pretty nice swing there buddy hey I know this is a tough road for you guys for the last three years and especially this year you had to leave New Orleans go to Houston how long was Maddox in the hospital for the stem cell transplant we were in Houston for about three months I was with Maddox for about three months Fabian was with us bottom all and yeah we had to leave home leave Marsha behind wait my mom dad mother-in-law father and dad that was you pitching to Maddux in the hospital I know and you've been also helping Marshall out on on the bound what does it mean just to be here in this moment have Maddux on your lap nice amazing uh and him to be able to come up here and watch his brother me this is amazing it's really amazing hey Maddux how you feeling buddy good you were pounding five banana sandwiches today so I think you're feeling really good I saw that are we gonna go for a six tonight all right hey Joey did you give any words of advice to your brother tonight no all right good talk Maddux yep beautiful Thank You Julie and it's such a good story and glad to see that he's here and I love the hospital allowing that to go on how important for kids most of these children's hospitals in other places recognize you gotta have activities for them when they're able to do that and he's watching his brother put on a show right now Maddux can rate by the way oh man and Marshall can pitch he's faced forward struck them all out yeah his big brother's been pretty good so far now fastball to get ahead breaking ball to finish guys off little brother liked that one too this is Liam thigh and he's the centerfielder who wants to catch every ball in the outfield ball that one's down to to Fabian's credit and the mom obviously you do everything you can for your child but if you just hear it baby in the dad's voice now overwhelming this moment is his thigh and gets plunked in it's gonna hurt for a while [Applause] and say it so nonchalantly that kills like that really hurts where that one landed I don't mean that me to say it without saying he got plunked that hurts yeah well it's almost when I'm up here almost that little bit of a giggle on the inside because you know how bad that hurts and especially when you're 11 and 12 years old back of the leg trying to get down there you got a lot of game left that does not feel good there's not too many kids throw as hard as Marshall Lucan when it catches you right here and this back behind the knee no good look like Liam's got a lot of fat on him either you know I never had that problem [Applause] his outfield partner Jill Ross he got jammed that's a little spinner that's gonna go foul yeah Marshall on the mound it's an opposing figure too he is 12 years old he's 5 foot 10 inches tall and weighs 132 pounds there's a football player he's a quarterback who is it a shock rather throw a touchdown pass then did a home run that ones to the wall that's a problem and finds leg is okay as he hustles down a second base in a wild pitch get our guy Egan vegan great that her behind the plate tonight he had a phenomenal performance his last time on the mound that was impressive got 10 to help this New Orleans team get here tonight that's a strike no one covering seconds to find content get off as far as he wants one in two and that wild pitch which is a a real issue for little league teams especially in close games was the first one that they had thrown in this tournament they pick up another strikeout that's five for Luke they you said the catching is gonna be so important those extra bases can come back and bite you a little bit when you got to catch her back there that you have a lot of confidence in to throw off speed especially with guys at third it runners in scoring position that's extremely important just for the psyche of your pitcher so you get our foot difference in height at the plate and at the on the pitcher's mound Michael Bowden's for nine and just swung it like he's five nine just say don't you help Michael Bowden that he's going up there let's go big boy bring it in here ready for that first pitch fastball one foot and 50 pounds Michael Bowden is given up of course Allen is the manager he's at third-base good swing of the first one that one right by him there oh and two so up then he's there got a couple of generations of values that have been at this field Michael and his grandfather will show you that from the 1954 Little League World Series in the KP you orchestrated that so what's the relationship there with Merrifield triplet his dad Wow that's chases favorite player yes Bennett's favorite player all the time they went to a charity auction last year bought one of which jerseys that was signed when they were driving down to regionals exit stopped at South Carolina said go on the field want to see the field of play on in college it's cool I mean it's awesome big fan it was all fired up Witt was great took him around the clubhouse is really cool than to do a really cool chases dad is from Kansas City so chase and his twin brother they root for the Royals and the Chiefs and Justin Lee's first pitched out of Gavin very in there for a strike on about a second of this one this is an elimination game these two United States teams the winner faces Hawaii Saturday on the inside corner strike two and that's not a strike I've said that a lot just not a strike the scoreboard unfortunately has two of them up there that's fouled off all right come on top of the knee I'm home come on Pat you're not gonna keep nipple Culpepper down here we go puck we even tell my saw and pepper Lori I thought talking about me and Katie's beards we should just stop there hair beard all shooting match I like his yeah I'll let some energy [Applause] this year Little League rules a little different there are no 13 year olds on any teams everybody is 10 11 or 12 they realign the calendar to fall more in line with the school calendar so September's they cut off and it's made for a different brand of baseball you little sawn the I peppers get a little salt in the eye yeah coming it all there or lettuce try and get the hair out of the way got enough of it ooh nice stop we're gonna have seven nicknames for a Pepin I love it show lettuce by the way working up a pretty good sweat back there too it's not easy you know Justin Lee's usually normally the catcher and you get a chance not to be back there all the time and get to catch the AC but I like those one of the harder or fast balls on the team being back there just sporadically as tough as a catcher pretty good battle here by Gavin berry nobody out in the second inning a couple of fly outs in the first for Louisiana that's where Lee then if you could read his mind would say that is a strike I'm sure you thought that a lot KP yeah where's that at [Applause] have a very nice rip at that fastball in there's the advantage of the left-handed first baseman is that play to the glove side right there because everything is taking you towards second base it's a much easier throw this is not easy and Matt Coleman makes it looked at what big old glove flips it about 30 feet to second base gets the lead runner he tacked that ball get out of the way of that big don't let that big hop you play it back that mall by Paul might have some top spin on it it's not oh yeah my cameraphone there that was the size of that lens they'll build you some biceps on that left side and it'll of some photography Sheets a small teammate yeah writer writer came up on the we interviewed him on SportsCenter yesterday and he came out and was talking about the Ben was as with his coach I said I got some videos I need to show you in private night spot there by Ryder though really that's a true drag bunt with nice positioning seeing the third baseman Brady Yates back perfect touch there sure pins watching at home yeah thinking let's not show him this let's let's not just some locker room fun stuff this is Egan pray there he pitched a terrific game six innings the other day they calm little perm his dad of course would be big perm and a big swing and a miss Blanchard's getting way off of first base and of course with the lap down there at second they probably wouldn't mind if the pepper would throw it down there and see if they get election going pepper see if the pepper will thrown around that's the pepper boy [Applause] 1 & 2 that secondary rider Prancer doubt there he be careful in that back pick I know we won out but I'm looking to set up away and back pick here of my first basement I can fall little high he doesn't take planche at his big a lead at first base so colpepper just throws back rescrew cell hit a double in the first inning and got stranded at second so for the second straight inning here to start this game Lee is in a little bit of a pickle hit rely a little bit more eye movement to it doesn't go as hard at least right now is Lucas throwing he's got to break them all to go along with it throw them both you see that one right here nice job a foul on that one off or pray through what this easy a team does they found off some pitches make you work 36 pitches so far here for Lee only in this bottom of the second with one out negative more its it is decision time if you're already looking ahead to Saturday in the u.s. championship game 35 pitches you would be required to take two days off but you got to win this game in order to be eligible to even pitch Saturday and you can finish this at-bat and we'll see if that's the decision that's made or we just ride this one out make they're probably rolling I would think they were quick to pull pictures last night pray this worked a 3-2 count looking good job by Justin Lee for the second out think the first time I feel free to brag of all the college I didn't trust out the guys in there that is nasty after all those fast balls dumped into three two breaker I mean it would have never even crossed my mind they throw breaking ball when I was 12 patro 3-2 rep knew it did it's amazing how evolved these kids are I mean a 3-2 breaking ball with one out gonna load the bases and no problem just ice and Justin leaves veins there's another guy you like a lot the shortstop for Louisiana's name is Stan wills it's another one Lee would have liked but now falls behind 2 and oh and you're gonna get up to the top of the order after this wiltz has been an absolute rock at shortstop he's at 11 chances hadn't made an error yet [Applause] a lot of stranded runners last night in Hawaii Louisiana game Louisiana one for seven last night runners in scoring position quickly the throw comes back in and the bases are loaded back to the top as Stan wilts delivers just gotta love his swing his attitude his smile when he plays shortstop we've talked about Stan Wilkes it's fun to watch so they are loaded now in a big big chance for Ryan darah leadoff hitter struck out his first time up [Applause] on the ground [Applause] how close was it few Bingman on top of it see here he's got it fouled watch the foul call a funny story on your boy pepper his grandparents his debt as granddad Jimmy runs a small Airport in Virginia and when you own or sorry run a small airport in Virginia you can just grab a plane and hop in so they've been coming flying in for games from Virginia on Major League Baseball Classic Sunday they actually took precedence over a rod and J Lo's plane circled on the airport as the coal pit
