Listening to songs from THE BOOK OF LIFE took me on one of the most adorable adventures of my life

it's super hot here in Sydney right now so I apologize in advance if you see a nice sweat Sheen develop over my forehead and face I don't know why I'm apologizing as though you'd be like this damn guy and his sweating knock it off Matthew how could you control that right now I'm excited because today we are digging into the Book of Life which I believe is a Disney movie imma Google that real quick actually oh it's 20th Century Fox oh so I guess yeah now Disney I've heard a lot of people compare this to Coco and I loved Coco it made me SOB like a little baby and all I really know about this movie is it's also got to do with like an afterlife or something I think and given the comparison I assume it's from the same culture and look well I'm hoping to feel some emotion from these songs it would be wonderful if I didn't cry on camera uh that would be the ideal outcome before we start I wanted to let you know that I upload some uncut versions of my reactions over on patreon you can also join the first song is called creep is it this guy singing it I mean it's called creep is he also a weirdo what the hell is he doing here that's so stupid I'm sorry I'm sorry Papa do not make it worse by apologizing a Sanchez man wow never whoa there okay I mean we're coming in hot with some toxic viewpoints already I'm guessing the movie is a deconstruction of that but God damn never apologize ever even if you do something wrong well then I'm Noble oh good that's cool that's a that's a really good um uh I like him already don't kill bulls in a blood spot you are no Sanchez damn Matt got disowned because he doesn't want to kill an animal wait is was that the bull shaking its head like man you're not gonna murder me week Victory spirits that poor kid never had a chance my dear good game though it's not over when you were here before what couldn't look you in the eye I made the Radiohead reference as a joke I thought it was just gonna be called great but it's it's a Cuppa I have started this video so well oh my God I'm Kane it works with his voice how big is he gonna go for the chorus oh damn [Music] oh okay I'm in what the hell I love the strumming pattern it introduces like a whole different Rhythm to the song and I'm also always gonna welcome that kind of grit to my life he's always singing in these like pained groans which I mean is pretty apt for the song [Music] cool what the hell never would I just expect a movie like this to just bust out some Radiohead oh and he doesn't see her there you don't know women in my life oh were they betting on whether she would like fall for him or something and the other guy thought that she would fall for him if he kills a bull and she's just like no you got no idea man she is going to sin for him because of that song right out of the gate I am surprised I don't even know what to say I love that they totally lend into how sad that song is because God is at an incredibly depressing song and I have heard covers of that where people do it kind of more upbeat and I'm like yeah you know you can bring a different sound and style to the song but when you're singing lyrics like that and you're doing it upbeat it sounds strange for literally my very first introduction to this movie I'm sold give me more the next song is called I will wait there's no visuals for this one it's just like the soundtrack recording so I'm ready to get lost I mean I should have expected some variation but I guess given the last song I was expecting something kind of slow and Atmospheric I was ready to close my eyes sit back and just forget that I was even filming a video and I get like upbeat happy party music wait is this second or just a long intro laughs it's so upbeat what the hell is that a kid [Music] okay he's got a really smooth voice okay am I crazy or is there like like country music inspiration going on here I feel like it's a dash of that mixed with like Mexican music and I I don't know why I love the sound even the little bass going like boom boom boom boom it's like almost like Johnny Cash [Music] I can't tell if these lyrics are sad too all those those Harmony oh my God even if those lyrics are depressing I can't really tell my interpretation just based off of hearing for the first time here somehow it's still lively and making me feel happy and those harmonies are coming in so gorgeously damn the flow of the it's like Americana [Music] there is such a variety of voices here too I wasn't sure the first time I heard those big harmonies if it was all the same thing because they sounded different but like sometimes when people sing harmonies they sound different but as the song has gone on I've definitely been hearing different voices they just all blend together so well in style wait out oh my guess who didn't recognize this song me how did I not recognize it until they started doing that oh are all the songs in this covers ah again that was not what I expected and I love how they've done a little genre blend here and bringing that guy in to do the chorus also a good idea because he has the grit to pull this off perfectly I feel so stupid for not how do I already love these songs man yeah the delivery is cool oh it's already that's the end already oh my God so genuinely I don't know if I've just happened to pick two covers or if the whole movie is just covers I'm not gonna complain if it is to be honest they've done the cover as well they did real Justice to creep and that's so I didn't even pick that one it's funny and impressive to me how well a movie can really convey its tone and just its overall Vibe by the songs it chooses to use especially I think if they're covers because funnily enough just offer those two songs I feel like I have an idea of the aesthetic and even a little bit of an idea of the characters not the plot though but that's fine let's see if we get that from the next song called the apology song he's fighting a big creature who's he going to apologize to what is that so many questions oh he is fighting some giant Beast this almost feels like a call back to the first song because he was struggling with killing a bull and now he's gonna have some crisis over whether to kill this thing yeah is that what's happening I think so he's gonna play to it oh wait that's the guy that's like his father or whatever oh God it's flaming [Music] I mean you know there was a part of me that kind of expected the giant flaming bull to stop and be like oh you're playing a song that's so beautiful let's sit down and be friends because you know it's an animated movie I'm guessing targeted towards kids and that just seems like what would happen instead he just got smashed although in saying that I'm assuming he's gonna get up try again and get through how is this song gonna go huh [Music] oh is everyone going to be like oh damn you're a great musician let's lean into that [Music] you're ready oh he's like oh man I'm not at my peak of picking things and realizing them in time because I was thinking at the start who's he going to apologize to like is he going to use this opportunity to like make some big apology to someone in his life and that also made me think like dude aren't there better times to do this than when you're facing a giant creature that clearly wants to harm you but I didn't think um maybe apologizing to the bolt for everything that people have done to them does the bull understand that it's terrifying they're all feeling like it's heartwarming what is wild about scenes like this obviously I don't know where this is in the movie so it would help if I didn't know that but it's fascinating when a movie like this can make me not entirely sure what's gonna happen I mean you know I'm like 98 certain that the ball is just gonna be chill but there's still that two percent of me that's like oh is he just gonna get smashed away like not die but just gonna get swatted off into the Crowd Oh the Flames are going down I love how they had that Melody stay on the same note the first time and then fall down on the second one it really accentuates that drop down oh it's just lying down and listening because you're cutie oh my gosh wait what it feels so good Mr stock or did it just like pass on or something I'm guessing that's happy because I don't know if they're in like the Land of the Dead or something so if it disappears like that and Fades away does that mean it's finding peace or something I'm just gonna assume that that wasn't it like dying somehow all of these songs so far have been really well done and more than that that one and especially creep were just quite beautiful they were beautifully done I don't quite know how to explain what I mean when I say that but it's almost like they're taking these songs and doing them as art I don't know that sounds so wanky but it's really artistically done and in a way that you can extract so much from such small chunks of music yeah I mean as well it's efficient it's accomplishing a lot in a small time the next one is called no matter where you are if this is like a cute love song I might just die is this towards the end I'm guessing it is oh she's singing to the I can be an absolute sucker for cute little love songs that are just like unapologetically sappy you know what brings me even more joy when they're done with cute harmonies between couples is this a cover too man at this point I'm doubting everything I'm gonna google it by Us The Duo from what I'm seeing I think it might have been a song before the movie but you know what I discovered well on that little Google search is Zoe Saldana is in this [Music] oh [Music] the complete change of pace took me off guard and I loved it but then they also went bigger and brighter with their singing and of course had this lovely duet they sound so good their voices have a really nice contrast too A lot of times when people do harmonies they do it in such a way to make voices blend and meld together so it's like oh it's almost like one voice but having the distinction like this can also be really interesting [Music] I love how high that oh I do know this song yo I just I love the way they sing together oh when she was singing with him she was quite light and Airy and now when it's just her singing she's brought it to be so much like chestier is he gonna do the opposite that'd be cool [Music] her runs are gorgeous [Music] such a good bait man do you know how hard it is to like listen to these songs and stay in frame you know I don't have that much room on my camera frame we'll see my hand goes out of frame real soon that's my head you know it's only a little bit so if I start bopping I'm just going to dip out a frame [Music] I love that guy's dance moves I uh oh dude the guy doing like the opera singing over the top hell yeah I've said this like approximately a billion times on my channel I love gang vocals when there's just like a group of people doing like a chant or just singing all as one but in the background it's uh I I Adore it and it's done so well here they're so sweet they're like the cutest couple oh my God if this is at the end like I'm living because what a what a cute ending the world oh they were in a hot and people go oh my God I like that that's spoken in rhythm I was getting so invested in what I assume is the ending monologue being like oh that's so cute I love this oh my God it's making me feel so good and then it just stops because that is the end of that particular video so guess I gotta watch the movie to find out as though this movie hadn't already won me over it just hits me with that this cute ass love song where those two just seem so wholesome so wonderful it makes me want to root for them so badly I love when I actually like the couples in movies like this you know it's really easy to like the characters by themselves and be like oh yeah I really like him I really like her but them as a couple is also cute as I like it and it's not just me like enjoying the vibe of the movie or the message of the movie I like seeing them happy the last song we're gonna listen to today is called I love you too much is he gonna serenade her I love that inscription it's adorable pig is like cute as well why is everything in this movie so adorable I like his little high notes I'm assuming he's singing thinking or hoping that she'll hear but maybe he's not sure I don't think he's like directly serenading her maybe I could be wrong [Music] it just occurred to me that like they're probably a Forbidden Love I don't know if they're from like families that hate each other or he needs to do something to like win her parents approved I don't really know what it is but I'm guessing there's some obstacle in that way I didn't really think about that until just now see this through them even getting the approval of the animals like of course oh I love that shift I was gonna say like all throughout these songs I feel like I've seen characters like judge him for singing or playing and that's confused me a little bit because he's good he's slays maybe it's just one of those things where like his family wants him to do different things or they don't see the value in it oh my god he has a cool versatility in the sounds he can make he's unhappy about it ah okay no he's like oh he's kind of killing it though rise man the structure of these songs is just so satisfying and also it's done in such a way that my God it does not get boring at all I cannot believe that I'm almost two minutes of the way through this I'm not that far from the end it feels like I've been listening to like 30 seconds everyone watching I love you too much oh this is so adorable whoa hello they just lift him up to the I love that even the pig is swinging bro if your pets are like oh my God he is amazing and that is a giant green flag love you there's oh man I love how they got rid of the background it's just them that's so cool do you think you think oh okay oh my god well he's dead wait okay I gotta love her what the hell oh a little bit bummed that that's the end uh maybe my guess was completely wrong I thought that they both loved each other but maybe there was some obstacle in their way but it kind of seems like she wants him to like win her or maybe there is still an obstacle but she's like hey man like you know is there an enemy on the balcony is not enough my parents don't really care about that at the end of the day I can only make guesses but I will say that this has definitely made me want to watch the movie I actually wasn't even super aware of this song before people started recommending it to me in my reaction request channel on my Discord server gone from not really knowing about its existence to now wanting to watch it because it seems cute as hell honestly I'm also just so glad every time that I get to the end of a video like this and I've enjoyed everything so thoroughly because I liked all of those songs they were all nice the covers unexpected loved them and I'm also just so impressed by what these people were able to do with the music I'll also say it
