well if you got yourself one of these one of these or even one of these you're going to want to stick around for this video because gm just got hit with a class action lawsuit that could likely impact you as well [Music] so guys aloha welcome back to the channel welcome back to paradise in 2022 a very special how oli makahiki holds every single one of you out there hope you guys had a great new year's eve and a very fun new year's day which is actually today we're getting right back to it and today's gonna be kind of a non-traditional video in a sense of we're not building or modifying anything but we have kind of a substantial update coming from the u.s district court out in michigan now if you guys are by chance new and joining me for the first time a special aloha and welcome i'm just a crazy hawaiian texan that loves cars makes a couple of videos and a very bad example in a self-certified youtube automotive technician which means just take everything i say with a grade of salt i was checking the uh specs on the end line for the rotary girder i'm over here on the right we have the 2020 silverado trail boss it's our daily driver our family vehicle over here we have a vehicle that's needed a lot of love in 2022 which is my 2007 silverado and then last but not least my dream car here camaro zl1 which is retrofitted with a ton of oem zl1 1le parts we had a lot of fun this year with this car if you guys have by chance not subscribe just yet feel free any point in the video scroll down hit that subscribe button below join the ohana we have a time coming up this year and yeah a ton have a good year [Music] so here's the deal whether you have a 4th gen silverado a gmt 900 series or even a chevrolet camaro it's likely if you have the 6.2 the 5.3 or even the 6 liter engines your vehicle could be outfitted with the active fuel management or dynamic fuel management systems from gm that are total crap and gm has finally received a class action lawsuit about it vehicles from 2014 all the way through 2021 could in fact be impacted but it's not just these the yukon the escalade the suburban the tahoe the sierra the silverado there's a lot of vehicles out there running these engines this is a big problem for gm but fortunately in my case only one out of my three vehicles have this system in it and i've already actually disabled it but regardless of that we're going to cover today is the details on this class action lawsuit where vehicles are impacted and really the things that gm has known all along and just waited way too long to do anything about it [Music] all right guys so what we have here is the class action complaint and demand for jury trial now essentially what this is is a 243 page document that i'm gonna try to sift through and give some key updates and keep points here because this thing is pretty nasty now i'm gonna be looking over here a little bit to the left where this document is but essentially what it is it's a class action lawsuit that was filed on the 15th of december so just a few weeks ago in the u.s district court of michigan where nine plaintiffs allege the valve train systems afm and dfm are defective what no one's surprised we all knew now the article states that a gm lifter recall should allegedly be ordered for buick cadillac chevrolet and gmc vehicles equipped with the 5.3 the 6.0 and the 6.2 liter v8 engines now correct me if i'm wrong but i haven't seen a v8 buick since i was like a teenager is there a v8 buick today that i don't know of [Music] comments below i'm actually genuinely really curious regardless this is a big deal for gm these power plants are in a lot of vehicles now just for perspective in 2019 alone gm sold more than 963 000 trucks that's a lot of vehicles so not only just for the sheer number of units here these trucks are profit machines for these companies from ford to ram to gm these things drive a lot of profitability now according to a reuters report gm makes about 17 000 on each one of these units that is sold obviously that varies by trim level and everything like that but that's a lot of profitability that gets cut away with these recalls and things that they should have fixed in the freaking first place now i'm going to do my best to take kind of a middle ground here because i am one a huge consumer of gm products my garage is filled with gm performance products but also i have experience working with really big companies i've worked for a fortune 50 company for the last decade of my life i get kind of the perspective of the corporate machine but also the consumer so i'm kind of sit in the middle a little bit so on the class action lawsuit the nine plaintiffs on behalf of anyone who's either leased or purchased a 2014 to 2021 gm vehicle with one of these v8 engines with a fuel management system so it's afm or dfm they claim quote that the lifters are defective in design workmanship or material causing them to fail leading to causal repairs in and out of warranty now that's kind of a big deal here but it's not just an inconvenience breaking down the particular part this is within the engine if it does fail it can lead to catastrophic damage very quickly you never want to be stranded far away from home or anywhere in a remote location or breaking down in the middle of a highway isn't just an inconvenience it's a safety concern as well but the class action doesn't just blame the dfm system they also blame rocker arms and faulty valve springs for premature engine failure but they primarily focus on the dfm lifters as the key point of failure now i myself didn't understand fully how this dfm system worked a few months ago so i did some homework and actually it's pretty impressive if it would work properly now something to note the afm and dfm systems are actually different the active field management systems in the 2014 through 19 models either activate or deactivate four cylinders so either running in all eight or running unforged the dfm or the dynamic fuel management system sometimes called dynamic skip fire have 17 different patterns of cylinder deactivation basically reads your vehicle movement and throttle inputs at 80 times a second and will choose what pattern of cylinder deactivation is right at each moment how this system works is there's a solenoid on every cylinder that control the activation or deactivation of a two-piece lifter essentially what happens when a cylinder is deactivated the lifter will collapse in on itself instead of opening that valve so basically as that camshaft lobe turns over it won't open a valve which in simplest terms turns off that cylinder the lifter itself is where the majority of the failures are happening they get stuck or break they bend the push rod which could lead to dropping valves which could lead to shrapnel flying through your engine and very quickly your engine can become you're driving along you're driving along you know we're burning alive oh my god all because you want to save a couple extra pennies and to me it doesn't get now out think my biggest issue with all this is gm has known about this issue and hasn't done anything about it they were just recently released a lifter service update for the new 2021-year model vehicle so if you have the l84 l87 engine that's the 5.3 or 6.2 essentially the dealerships are being directed to swap out these faulty lifters but they describe the problem here on gmathority.com on an article that effective vehicles may or may be prone to experiencing a broken valve lifter lock pen spring that's a little part within a two-piece lifter that caused all this chaos this problem only affects vehicles equipped with the naturally aspirated five three or six two gasoline engines the problem does not pose a safety hazard as it stated however a broken valve lifter long spring can lead to various engine problems effective engines may produce a service engine light along with a misfire peculiar engine noises and engine damage but it's like four years later so the effective vehicles they have listed here is a 21 cadillac escalade the escalade esv the chevy tahoe suburban the silverado 1500 the yukon and the yukon xl for some reason the sierra is not on here i think it should be they also have listed a gm service update number which i'll list in description below excuse the reference if you guys do need it if you are to purchase a 20 21 year model vehicle with an l84 l87 engine make sure that service has been done before you do take delivery all right let's get into the nitty-gritty of this class action now i'm going to pre-face this by saying i am not a lawyer nor do i ever want to be and essentially what this is is a 243-page document that lawyers will make a fortune off of that us consumers won't see a penny of well maybe a penny up but regardless what i thought was funny when i first hopped on here if you watch the channel because of the zl1 and if you own a 6th gen camaro super sport you're part of this as well but fortunately in my case i have a six speed manual which is not outfitted with any type of cylinder deactivation or auto start stop thank heaven this document kind of kicks off explaining how these afm or dfm systems work which we already talked about now the main claims that are being made here is the afm and dfm valve train systems are defective and malfunction and fail as a result of design manufacturing material and or workmanship defects but just to add insult to injury there's actually a paragraph that says other components in the valve train system namely valve springs and rocker arms are also defective and have high rates of premature failure it's not just a two-piece lifter now when the valve train defects manifest during the warranty period gm authorizes its dealerships to merely replace the parts that have failed with the same defective versions now i think this has been updated the part numbers that are replacing the two-piece lifters are different now i don't know if this is an older statement now this class action also claims the valve train defect is inherent in each class vehicle and was present at the time of sale like i said earlier gm knew about this problem and didn't do anything about it and at the same time a big corporate machine it is i kind of get why they didn't do anything about it because it's cheaper to kind of just fix the problem as it arises versus having to proactively go out and change every lifter underneath the sun with the million vehicles that are sold a year of this now it states gm was well aware of the valve train defect from pre-production testing design failure mode analysis calls to its customer service hotline dealer audits complaints made with the national highway transportation safety administration there's a tons of sources where gm just turned a blind eye and despite access to aggregate internal data gm has actively concealed the existence of the valve train defect by claiming that consumers are responsible for lifter failures those are primarily the older generation models that have well over 150 000 miles on it by now in this way gm has effectively unknowingly transferred the cost of repair to consumers despite the promises of its express warranties now gm sells its class vehicles with a three-year 36 thousand mile bumper-to-bumper warranty however when class members bring their vehicles to gm having already required repair and requesting coverage for subsequent failure gm denies coverage essentially what that is if i already had a lifter failure had to replace previously either i'm out of warranty now or they replace the same part that was defective before because they put the same part back in they allegedly are denying warranty coverage and making that be out of pocket which is kind of silly now the class action continues on listing out each of the nine plaintiffs here one of them called mcclave now mcclavey bought a brand new 2021 gmc yukon with the 5.3 liter v8 so the same exact power plant that's in my truck at the time of his purchase gm already issued three communications to its authorized dealerships describing problems with the valve train of the 2021 gmc yukon on june 12th of 2021 he was driving his vehicles when he heard a loud ticking from the engine compartment additionally the dashboard illuminated various warning lights i'll paraphrase some of it essentially took it to his nearest authorized gm dealer found a failed lifter at cylinder number three with a bent push rod which is typically a result of these failed lifters the dealership only replaced one bank of lifters so essentially the head they were working on they replaced everything under there versus actually doing both heads or both sides of the engine at the time the vehicle approximately had 4 500 miles on the odometer 4 500 miles not even the first oil change yet near nearly collapsing lifters and then in november just a few months later he was driving his vehicle again when you heard ticking from the engine compartments and felt a vibration ended up stranded six hours from his home and was diagnosed surprised with having another failed lifter this time on cylinder number four so it's the opposite side which they should have serviced in the frickin first place while they were in there there was another bent push rod with that failure at the time his vehicle had approximately ten thousand miles on it two engine failures and ten thousand miles that's just unacceptable that's just one of the nine examples on here the other ones are kind of juicy as well if you guys want to read through them it boggles my mind the amount of consumers that are experiencing this on a regular basis and gm really hasn't done anything about it until they release this service bulletin for the brand new trucks but everything else is just kind of left hanging so that's some of the juicy stuff guys fortunately in my case my 5.3 liter has not experienced any of those issues this thing has been absolutely stout and good thing too because i've kind of heavily modified it and i'm sure dealerships love to try to cancel my warranty because of the things i've done to the truck this is disappointing coming from a gm fanboy myself to see these issues continue to happen year after year after year these started not just in 2019 but in 2007 when the afm was initially introduced into these trucks the dfm was supposed to solve it all it did it made things worse the 6.2 liters are much more prominent for having these issues there's several youtube channels out there i know one of them you guys watch pretty often is the lmfs crew i hope i said that right but he's got the 6.2 liter trail boss he had the lifter failure fortunately in my case we're still in the clear guys i just hope gm gets there together that's the whole update i have for you today this has been really a different video than i typically do if you guys enjoyed it let me know in the comments if you guys want more of these type of videos i'm not a huge fan of them because i hate just talking and not working but if you guys like them we'll bring you more of them but it is 2022 we've updated our logo for 2022. i mentioned in our last video that chevy continues to refuse to build a raptor killer and i have elected myself to do it myself so this idiot is gonna in fact embark on the build of building a raptor killer in 2022 it's gonna be a fun one guys i hope you guys have a great and happy new year we'll see you in a few days for our next video [Music] [Music] you
