Liège-Bastogne-Liège 2024 - Extended Highlights

[Music] welcome to the 110th edition of Le Baston the oldest of the classics and the fourth Monument of the Year defending Champion Remco aapol is absent after a crash at the tour of the bass country but the current world champion Mata Vanderpool is here along with the 2021 winner T paga this is very important race and uh yeah after Catalonia I've been training hard for this and for the jro so I think I'm in good shape and uh yeah it's important to to feel good tomorrow feel good Sensations and uh to make a good race it's going to be really open race and uh yeah a lot of attacking from far away after Conquering the tour of Flanders and Parry rube Vander pool's looking to become just the second man to win three monuments in a single season it's the last one of my classic campaigns so I'm ready to to try and give it uh give it all one more time it's more about the legs and tactics on a course like this I think I think um yeah pois showed himself already that he's uh really hard to beat on a course like this but yeah we'll give it a try last year's runner up Tom pidcock won the amale gold race last weekend while his compatriot Stevie Williams took the honors to R soaked Flesh on I think last year was a really nice really nice race I think I was I was I came away quite happy with that last year's spring yeah this year of course you know when I'm still already yeah feeling feel feeling good I'm uh confident with with the team around me as well and and uh we give it a good shot we had a great race on Wednesday obviously and uh to come away with that is is massive so uh hopefully we can carry on the momentum and uh try and go try and go better again on Sunday no major changes to the route this year 24.5 km with some 42,000 M of climbing 10 of the day is 11 climbs come on the way back to Li and it's Relentless in the final with the coat deut the coach de Forge and the coda Rush of Fon coming in quick succession before sweeping back into Le the weather will be cold again with a headwind forecast in the final but crucially it should be much drier than Flesh valon on [Music] Wednesday there were a few spots of rain as the flag was dropped and a group of nine Riders went up the road four of them have been in the Breakaway at this race in recent years Paul Ulan and Fabian dub from Total energies Lo fan from Bingo and lilan calan from Anam Mary Enzo liner was also in there for DSM fer manic postnl with Ry Rosa of group harmer fdj Christian scaron of aana Kazakhstan Ivan Romeo from mistar and finally Gil gelders from sudal quickstep making his Monument debut they had a maximum gap of around 4 and 1/2 minutes but the Advantage began to shrink at the halfway point of the race with UAE team Emirates increasing the pace in the peleton the average speed around 41 kilm an hour for the first 2 [Music] hours UAE getting a helping hand from a few other teams notably Israel premere Tech as the Gap tumbled to a minute and 20 but a couple of crashes would then split the race apart oh oh crash and almost coming down Vanderpool was held up almost he just managed to miss it and another massive crash huge crash of riders well luckily everybody was able to get up and keep going but quite a few Riders got held up including vaner pool and the pelan weren't hanging around with UAE and Israel still setting a high Tempo by the third climb the coat deonis they were closing on the Breakaway who were down to just find Riders the vanderpol group now trailing by around a minute 88 km remaining and breakway over at the start of the cat dwan with UAE soon reasserting control of the bunch and looking to put their rivals in the red Vanderpool was now over a minute back with another pre-race favorite Pitcock the British Rider decided that the chase wasn't going quickly enough for his liking so he attacked from that second group pulling away with Mari Van [Music] Sant well little by little these chasing groups manag to close the gap on the Main peltin and they finally made the junction with 70 km to go all of the favorites back in at the front then with dom Novak continuing to set a high tempo for UAE the Riders heading for the famous kot dearu where Evan AOL launched his winning move in the last two editions patcha deciding to take a leaf out of the belgian's [Applause] book here goes the attack T Pacha now starts to up the tempo Richard carass trying desperately to hold pacha's wheel but no luck the Slovenian Superstar was soon leading solo and he reached the summit of Laredo with nearly 20 seconds in hand and that Gap would only grow as his Rivals struggle to get organized Ben Healey Roman B beroa KFA and Roman greguar leading the chase they wouldn't get anywhere near paga though he was flying away to another Sensational Victory gaining time on the two final climbs B would win the battle for second place as everybody else was caught by a bigger group containing vanderpol and Pitcock Pacha with time to savor his victory he's just ridden away from everyone the Slovenian Superstar paga wins his sixth Monument of his career and his second Li Bast on Li paga has destroyed the opposition today now we get set to bring in the second and third place Roman B is best ever finish in the a Baston Le AG second place in a monument for B Matthew Vanderpool looking to at least try and get the podium finish he's been looking for it's going to be the world champion in third place another demonstration from paga who joins vanderpol on six Monument wins and now has 70 career victories at the age of just 25 the Slovenian has had some tough times at this race in recent years and dedicated this win to the late mother of his partner urar zigarts it was a quite a for me all day riding the on the bike and U thinking of USA's mother from two years ago when uh we had to go home and um and last year when I broke my hand so yeah the last two years was uh was really difficult anyway and uh this uh I was riding for USA's mother today and uh yeah I'm really really happy that uh that finally I can again win in this race win this uh beautiful race that is now seven wins in 10 Race days for paga this season ahead of B who took his best result at a monument in his 22nd appearance Vanderpool winning the Sprint for third place ahead of Maxim van Hills and aelian parry pantra and so the curtain closes on a spectacular Classics campaign and we look ahead to The Grand Tour season where that man patcha will no doubt be making more headlines do join us again soon and thanks for watching [Music]
